- Опубликовано: 1 май 2024
- How has personal technology changed our world? Neil deGrasse Tyson sits down with tech vlogger and RUclips star @mkbhd (MKBHD), comic co-host Chuck Nice, and tech journalist Clive Thompson to explore Internet identity, hacking, Moore’s law, self-driving cars, and technological evolution.
Note: Portions of this show were recorded in 2015, so a few things may have changed since then!
You’ll learn how Marques got started vlogging in his early childhood, how he found out people cared about his videos, and what tech he’s excited to see in the future. Clive explains the differences between growing up in the tech world of the 80s and 90s compared to now, how the introduction of the iPhone set off the personal tech revolution, and if technology will ever level off as predicted by Moore’s law. Join us as we examine the impact that personal technology has on our daily lives, the privacy issues between big companies and their customers, and why Clive is not a fan of omnipresent facial recognition software. Neil and Marques also talk about internet identity: are your offline and online lives the same? Should they be different? We also debate whether employers should be allowed to check and monitor employees’ social media channels. All that, plus, Neil and company discuss the benefits and dangers of self-driving cars.
This episode originally aired as a podcast on February 9, 2018.

What innovation of consumer technology would you like to see?
Neuralink
StarTalk The innovation of consumer technology that I’d like to see is the more advanced production of Artificial Intelligence.
@@malditapeppas509 there is no point of flying cars, check out Elon musk's "boring tunnels" he said that you really wouldn't like things flying over your head and it'd be unneccessary stressful, while you can go as deep as you want with the tunnels
@@jammuuu7607 starlink is actually just a bunch if satellites, I think you meant neuralink lol
I would like to see the people in lesser developed parts of the world getting better access to a clean water supply and basic bathroom facilities.
In too many places around the world ENTIRE communities are squatting over filthy garbage holes that aren't even fully enclosed or structurally sound, and washing their clothes and their dishes in the same streams and rivers/lakes where they bathe themselves and their children.
You'd think it would require the most MINIMAL investment from the few families who own most of the world's wealth to help get it up to a basic healthy standard.
That's great and all, but you know what would be real nice?
*COSMOS SEASON 2*
Can't like this comment enough
Yes, seriously
what about Chuck Nice? he's real, his last name is Nice; real assuming you aren't a solipsist
Dwight K. Schrute
It’s where it do be it at?
I ask about Cosmos on every one of these ST videos that come out. I have heard nothing.
It was supposed to air in March with new Star Talk episodes too. Star Talk aired but Cosmos never did. I can't find a single article about it after March 15th.
This is an old video. Marques is 25 now I believe.
You recognize it from his sweater right?😉
Also he said he had 5 million subs :p
They would be talking about Neuralink.
Your name says M3 Driver and I was disappointed to see zero videos on your channel
@@sl270703 question is, were you expecting a tesla or a bmw and which is that person actually referring to?
I do agree. Instagram is an extension of people's ego. Facebook is an extension of people's insecurity. RUclips is an extension of our curiosity and boredome.
Naldific
and pornhub is an extension of our anatomy
If you click 'Trending' on RUclips, you ll know that for most, its just boredom, and no trace of curiosity
I could gladly go back too 2005. die smartsphone yet I'm only 27 I don't have insta Facebook etc I find it so disappointing that people have become so needy for this rubbish and it genrally shocks me how middle aged people are so enthralled in it
Greatest Episode! Havent even seen more then 2minutes yet
Man - i love these guys!!! This was great! Thank you....
Thanks for another informative show. The more I watched the more Clive reminded me of a young Jack Lemmon.
Love watching people this age talking about tech, perspective makes me wish I was born 15 years later 🤓👍🏽
Omg this collaboration is gonna be legendary ! Thanks for making this you guys
Not the only one we've done! ruclips.net/video/y9U10qdDQqk/видео.html
@@StarTalk I will check that as well, thank you .
Marques Brownlee, you are a great guy. I purchased alot of gadgets based on your recommendations.
oh man, Chuck takes it to another level :) cheers
So much enjoy these personal preschool topics... please continue having tgem... thanks fellas!! 😃😆🤣
I am 76 years old with a 1966 Dodge Charger and love the feel of acceleration. 15sec quarter mile is how i love to start start the day,
I'm not sure if "That kid" refers to how young Marques is or how old Niel and Chuck are 🤣
Refers to love
Marques has over 9 Million Subscribers now. shout out to you guys though. i learn so much from you.
great episode thanks! I love you Neil
Love this was not that long ago too.Great Interview Deb
👍✌
OMG ITS MKBHD! After his talk with Elon Musk, I knew this would happen.
this happened before elon interview, he says at the beginning of the interview that he is 22, but he is 25 now
No dumbass this is an old video
Damn! Gotta hand it to this channel! That is a great use of commercial breaks!
Chuck Nice Is The Best Co-Host !!
Damn you markass I was just having a last scroll in RUclips before going to bed.
Haha same
old video
STFU with that joke already. That got old almost a year ago.
Once opening RUclips before bed time it’s game over
Absolutely great talk.
Clive Thompson is admirable.
This video coincided with the announcement of Neuralink so much it's oozing with exciting relevance
Loving it. As the panel discusses the evolution of personal technology, the three of them are using Shure SM58 mics, which came out in 1966. 😂
Best colab right here
"Exemplar" is one of MY FAVORITE words! @3:40
I've found myself to be an atypical exemplar in many ways.
how long before scanning electron microscopes will be household technology
?
Neil youre the man! 👍 Quit apologizing for facts and science!
You know what blows my mind?
There are people alive today that remember Czechoslovakia being a country.
It's always _fun_ watching these ancient beings talk about young people.
I'm not that old...
Yay. More MKBHD.
Grandkids: Grandpa ppl actually drive their cars in your days?
Me: Yep.
Grandkids: Wow how is that even possible, do people die?
Me: All the time.
Master Gecko 117 did* 🙄
NDT predicts there won't be flying cars for commercial use
Great content!
We had public VR in arcades in the mid 90's. My local Q-Zar had a set up for 2 players, it was a basic polygon-y shooter but you could talk to ur friend through it and people payed to play it. VR has been around for decades, u didnt have a treadmill but u moved with a button on the gun it was fun for 1995 kids lookin for a 3D shooter, this was before Goldeneye 64
Chuck makes me happy
that hug at 47:04 was quite precious! :)
I do love how as technology advances, the gaps in advances gets shorter. What took over 300 years could now be advanced and accomplished in potential a few years or less. What I thought would NEVER be possible in my lifetime now is just over the horizon.
I still get excited about chips challenge!!
Too bad the title didn't highlight Clive Thompson. I enjoyed his insights more than Marques' but Marques probably collects more views.
Is their any possibilities of existence of tachyons particle...? If so, it will help us send messages to our past due to which time paradox will be held....
I’m glad Chuck caught on to Neil saying playing with your self and later saying maturity
MKBHD has over 9 million subscribers! That’s almost double what you said. Gotta update those facts. He deserves it

Thank you for this.
It's pretty sad that people would actually skip over parts and only focus on something what random youtuber talks about, don't get me wrong it's interesting but far more interesting is the discussion about internet privacy, evolution of technology and etc.
@@ficalino7294 some people may skip the RUclipsr parts too and some may see both, everyone cant be the same, not sad at all, be more sad if everyone was the same. the world is doing much better than ever before in time overall, dont let mainstream nitpicked news articles cloud your judgement, relax do your best and help others when possible, life's too short, these comments may make u feel smart for a moment but not worth it in the longer bigger picture.
I watched the whole thing.
I think the best example for the have to have-nots issue is the expansion of 4k TVs/Monitors. Only a few years ago Sony released the first 4k TV at $25,0000 and now I can go to a Best buy and get a better tv for less than $1,000.
Love Marques' sweater :)
Ballet on freeway... Very good perception...
Made aware of Marques by Casey Neistat in 2016. Now made even more aware in 2017. Well done, Marques!!
wait are you telling me it's not 2019?
No StarTalk costs $$. RUclips ones are 3yo+.
Casey sucks
Calling Marques a vlogger is a huge understatement.
It would be awesome if Neil deGrasse Tyson were to debate with Eric Dubay!
It wouldn't hurt if it happened.
Great discussion, very insightful and entertaining!
Ps - Tell your peoples to stop videobombing @40:33 & 40:39 lol jk jk but I caught it and thought I'd call her (I think a her) out haha.
Keep up the great work! Cheers fellas

Even if you turn off location your phone still sends data about your location but in slightly slower intervals.
4:00 take an old TV set on the subway in Lodon and play youtube on it and you'll be watching youtube on a tube in the tube
the comment about self driving cars reminded me of "red barchetta" by Rush. There is a creepy parallel between the song and where your idea for cars being "stabled" and non-self driving being illegal.
I know youtube is pretty much the same but snap chat terms are very broad.

One big problem that US manufacturers have been ignoring - but the Germans (VAG and M-B, last I looked, but BMW may have joined in by now) have been studying - is that roughly one out of 4 people seem to get carsick in self-driving cars. It's definitely not something I'd want to ride in - I have enough trouble just using a taxi. But when he suggests the seats facing each other...the thought alone is enough to induce a little nausea.
In the movie I Robot, Will Smith's character was driving on the futuristic streets at insanely high speeds with other cars & vehicles. I think that's an example of the potential future of auto-driving cars.
thats so old man! mkbhd has 9million subs now!
I knew this was old when they were talking about snap hat as if it were still relavent
I'm a little disappointed you guys didn't manage to touch on what I would see is the key issue of technological innovation is A) how governments will manage to regulate or legislate how businesses take over responsibility for supporting the people that they remove due to automation and B) How technology may then be used to accommodate those that cannot work as work does not exist due to automation.
Years back I saw a demonstration of QR codes that were used combined with a camera to augment a surface with a 3D animation. The QR code gives the computer knowledge of distance and angle, the camera gives you a background, put the two together and you could have a dragon sitting on your desk.
Augmented reality is the way to go. Imagine a _They Live_ style world plastered in QR codes that comes to life when you wear glasses, instead of the world going bland like in that movie. Animated marquees or floating names of businesses as you walk by, virtual barriers to guide foot traffic...
Google glass, basically, without the botched roll-out or failed development. It's going to happen, the question is to which degree.
My first computer had 64kb memory on a tape drive. Just text. No graphics. At College we had clipboard to move stuff around. It took ages and crashed a lot. A little of the web, but it was so slow ( dial up) . My brother had a mobile phone the size of an attache case for his car. Now our grandson( aged 6) has Alexa.
They annonce Marques Brownlee youtube channel have 5 000 000 Subscribed, that's so old news, today (2019-August-01) he reached 9 000 000 Subscribers.
MKBHD!!

2 of the most powerful black minds together today so cool 😎

Hey it’s Markass Brownlee!
For self driving vehicles they have to be able to adjust to changes done to the vehicle. Every tire is not equal, every break doesn't have the same stopping distance, suspensions matter to the extent of rather it can be adjusted via "wire", and so on.
There are many factors that will have to be considered depending on how technical the vehicle should be according to the creator of the processes that will require sensors and security, hardware and software, for those components.
Sensors are objects with not much protection on them and misguided information can be placed into the computing process. It depends on how secure the local network, the car, and man or wan are configured to limit the numbers of potential persons breaching; in other words, security is mostly a way to slow down and deter potentials from continuation of attempts to breach systems.
For full autonomy I believe you would need a new computing language that's not open to the world or individual languages specific to each city or providence where communication is closed and secure and has that other level of security... a different computing language
Those who are trained keep their jobs for life and are possibly housed in a campus where they work. The only weakness with this is the blaring weakness, people.....the possibility of someone finding out depends on the people who are trained on that language so there's possibilities of security breaches but the only thing you need to be concerned about is limiting risk because you can't eliminate the risk, total elimination of the possibility of being breached means that project was never done.
I want time to complete my projects but debt calls from student loans to credit card debt I have to eliminate it or at least get it down to even consider being able to sleep right, eat right, and have a clear head to work.
Unfortunately, the hackers are always one step ahead. First, they find a way in...and only then do manufacturers realise there's a gap in their security and start looking for a fix - and it could take them weeks to find how they got it, work out how to close that opening, code it, and release the update without negatively affecting those vehicles that are currently operating. Just like all those large businesses that have had their customer databases and credit card info stolen lately...there is no way to actually stop someone from hacking a system. All you can do is make it a harder and slower process...but with lives at stake, that's not likely to be enough.
“Al Gore had to invent it first” 🔥😂
Why doesn't MKBHD do electronical engineering? It would be really cool to see some hardware breakdowns of the the products he reviews. The guy has got the money to go to college for that and to get the best tutors.
Is google now still a thing? Is it as helpful as stated in the interview? Would love to know.
Yes it is.
Lol 9:51
That is a hard stare into the future, whilst wishing to be born even later in time still
Coolest Christmas sweater ever. And Neil...STOP TOUCHING HIM!
Re: the discussion about the haves and the have-nots, and how technology only becomes truly reliable once it hits the mass market - you still have to have enough money to afford the newest techno gizmo, and then a lot of the time you have to pay for a stupid subscription to a service that deducts a bill every month from your bank account, or a fee is assessed on top of what you already are having trouble paying for. Sadly, there has been an ever widening increase in the digital divide, and that is right here in the USA, not between this country and some 3rd world place on the African plain or deep in the rain forest. I am old enough to know that it is very possible to live without all the new stuff, but young people fresh out of college who are trying to juggle rent, paying for gas, and keeping the lights on, and other basic necessities of life really don't have any idea what it is like out there in the real world, and what their priorities should be.
RUclips ads are bad enough but the ones on T.V. are much worse and I haven't watched regular television for years.
Dennis Nicholson RUclips are so bad that ads are viewed twice before and after video.
@@warsameadam5572 Yeah, I know and you have to pay almost $12.00/month to be rid of them.

i think tech comes with both pros n cons (as anything else) just be aware of both
Hey man ! We need to storm to where ever this is and free those gyes in the background
Oculus's devkit1 was pretty useless too unless you spent some serious time on how to make it work for games. that was like 2013 i believe? and now you have the Oculus quest which comes seriously close to "plug and play" altough in this case you don't even need to plug.
What year was this filmed??MKBHD has 9 mil subs, not 5.
pheew... chuck nice has been released and is doing fine
5 million subscribers? this interview was just out a few days ago!? wtf? hes at 9m now!
Cuz this was recorded 2 or 3 years ago
I'm not really informed about this channel, but I find it intriguing that this originally aired in 2018 and has an interview with Marques from 2015. Kinda weird.
remember when the first iPhone started at more than $500 and the second one dropped to $199, good times
me and chuck have the same dirty mind xD "playing with ourselves"
He called Marques a vlogger 🤦🏻♂️

That guy Clive wrote a book about how tech is making us smarter, I would say just the opposite.
Tech may be making things more convenient, but not smarter. It seems like everyone either sends emails or texts now, but I wonder how many people actually sit down and take the time to write actual letters or even know the proper formats of letter writing now.
How many of the younger generation even know how to correctly write a business letter? My guess is not very many.
A lot of people are into ebooks, how many actually pick up a printed book to read or even have a small library of books at home. I visit my local library and it is usually pretty well empty of patrons because a lot of them are on line watching videos, playing games, or reading ebooks.
Now don't get me wrong, I am not against technology, but I feel like everything else, it has its place and in moderation.
I was very excited there was a 2nd interview, but this is just them discussing the original one. Do a second interview please! MKBHD even states in one video he wants to do it again.
oh it's 9 000 000 Million on MKBHD now
People sometimes cannot differentiate it's their hopes they believe in or the real thing they believe in, for example, your parents can be dependent on you when you took care of their problems but at the same time they will doubt whether you can take care of yourself. One of my friends even go up to the extent of paying & telling a beggar that I know to show he is greedy, deliberately 😁 while looking to me to tell them who is their enemy 😁. Some people don't even know when to believe in something or someone, they're just reacting not thinking.
No questions?

The demand is high and the cost to make the phone are lower but the phone cost more. How does that work? People need to wake up are realize that they have power.
Thanks me technology that helps you in life becomes a crutch to you and your dependence on it increases. Making people not develope some learning and life skills.
