  • The low-impact, full-body workout you get on the SkiErg can have both endurance and aerobic benefits. The technique shown in this video is based on the extremely powerful, efficient techniques used by Nordic skiing athletes.
Focusing on technique can help you get the most out of your SkiErg workout. We cover start (the beginning of the stroke), the drive, which initiates by engaging your core, and the finish (hands by your hips).

Turn around so you pull the out and down (while rotating the hips) to work the triceps in a way similar to outrigger canoe paddling. I did that in the gym today for 30 minutes (3K). No one said anything to me. I experimented with different positions (bent waist with direct over the head and down pulls, diagonal over the head and down pulls always working the triceps muscles in various angles).

It's a solid machine for changing it up in your gym, but I agree, if you were wanting to train for XC skiing in your home, you're going to miss MORE than half without your legs. Maybe space was in issue. Supposedly, I head gyms we're standing their Concept2 rowers on their end and pulling down like the ski erg does and that's why decided to make them. No idea how true that is tho.

The technique demonstrated here is based on double-poling Nordic technique (you'll see it in races, skate skiing, biathlon, etc.), which is different than the alternating-arm technique used for e.g. Nordic touring. That said, one of the great things about the SkiErg is that people find the technique that works best for them and helps them meet their goals. Happy skiing!

Need some help understanding this. No leg movement at all but is somehow “total body” exercise? Just lifting your body a bit from a crouch is not leg workout. Also, without leg movements simulating skiing, there’s also the missing element of balancing and the core benefits of that.

It’s easy to say it won’t work your legs, given that 95% of the people using the Skierg at my gym never move them. But, raising one’s heels high and using the quads/core in unison in a downward thrust? The legs will feel pain indeed. I would say as much or more than the rowerg, which I’ve regularly used since 1998.
