OMG im at school right now, completely frustrated with my instructor. He yells HARD LEFT HARD RIGHT BLOWS HIS WHISTLE ALL DAY and it is aggravating. In one instance he says dont turn too much youre giving too much play then he says turn hard lex. im so glad I found this video im trying this way after lunch. I'm rolling the truck window up and completely tune him out he can blow his his heart out on that whistle. I need to get the feel of the truck. He already knows the truck and although he's an outstanding driver he sucks at teaching. Hopefully this video helps
One of the most important things a truck driver will learn is to control their emotions. There's a reason your instructor is off the road. My advice to all new drivers is this, say to yourself " breathe, relax" then take a deep breath and slowly breathe out. Control your emotions, stay calm and focused. Hang in there don't give up.
@@muninnseyesThank you for this advice I’m also dealing with the same issue with my instructor he stressed me out to the point I want to give up and try another career 🤦♀️
Once you guys pass your test and become truck drivers this test will seem way to easy because all the crazy docks you will have to back into at shippers . You will have to back into a dock clearly not made for a 53 foot trailer . There will be days when you will have to blind side back while many truckers are watching you just hoping you hit something , days when you have to find parking at night at a busy truck stop and you can’t see anything . Good luck out there and always just take your time .
Yesterday I did what he showed in this video and I passed my CDL test in NY Bellrose DMV site! Really good practical method. It works if you back up with little moves. A little to the left a little to the right a little to the left a little to the right. No hurry, just slow and easy, feel, see every move you make and where it leads the trailer, then bang! It is in there! :)😊👌✌👍 And thanks for posting this video. (I did the offset parking without even getting out and looking and I never needed to use the 2 times free pull ups either).
Jamie ModelVsDirector I literally just said the same thing. The way the video shows it, it much easier than the way my instructor showed me. Going to use this way for my exam.
Yup this way seems the way to do it. My instructor is telling me to put the wheel all the way to the left and wants me to think how many feet I am away from the cones. I’m using the easy way for my test.
The one turn thing works!! It helped me pass my CDL test. Super simple. Put one turn in it and take the trailer to just about 45 degrees and then straighten out. You can then see both cones in your mirrors. Steer the other way till your close to the cones and then use your GOAL to get out and see where your at. Continue back putting the trailer in the entrance of cones . This is a good time to use your one pull up to straighen out and back pretty much straight in.
I totally agree Dave...my instructor is teaching us like 5 different steps. To me this guy does it so easy and smooth. I think I'll try this next week.
This 'flow' method is for experienced drivers (like the instructor himself) who will 'feel' how much to turn the wheel at which point. Rookies for the road test will need 'geometric' reference points to be exact in this journey of 100 feet offset parking.
What is he saying when he says one turn to the left? Wtf? Also stop straighten it you would have to turn to the right he doesn't mention this. Please someone help
You explanted this maneuver the best. I'm glad I found this video because I'm trying to pass my CDL test and get my class A license. Thank you from California and subscribed!
Wow!! My instructor teach us to turn the wheel to the hard right, count to five, then turn it to the hard left as we're watching the cones in the mirror... this is the first time I've had anyone NOT to turn it hard to the right/left with offset parking!! Thanks so much!! (I just subscribed... looking for more helpful videos so I can pass my skills test at the DMV 😁!!)
I refuse to learn that method... Thats what they are teaching me at this time. Everyone in class is trying to coach me on it, but Im getting it in straighter than they are. It seems like there is too much correcting to do with the hard turn, unless you perfect it.
EliTheRealist1 ..... Good morning!!! I hear ya... I had finally got that thing down-pack by taking a little bit of what one person told me and what another person told me how to back it up in there... Matter fact, I took my DMV Skills Test and had to only pull up once & knocked only one cone down... the offset I got it in the first time without touching one cone!! I got my CDL on June 22 and now I already done drove nearly 2,000 miles thus far!! I'm feeling more comfortable driving and backing up the truck at the truck stops (as long as it's not too crowded) 😉😉 Lol!! But I know there will be a time when I'm gonna have to back it in a tight spot... but I don't care if it'll take me 5 times to pull up and get it straight... eventually I'm gonna be like a pro along with the drivers that have been driving for years!! Do you have your CDL license yet?? I wish you the best and be safe!!
@paula dont ever get comfortable backing up.. my pops 40 years in the game and he still gets out and look and do all those fundamentals that come with backing..they day u think u know it all the day u hit something or eventually u will hit something..

I just started offset backing Thursday at my school, and for someone who has never driven a combination vehicle, it was whooping my ass lol. But I've been watching a lot of videos such as this and have a better understanding of where I was going wrong. So come Tuesday when I go in, I'm feeling pretty confident that I'm going to knock it out. Thanks for posting.
If I can give some advice, I would say that you should let the rear trailer wheels do the driving. I know that that may sound weird, but that's just the way I look at it. Turn your steering wheel to get you started, but your trailer wheels know where to go. Let the trailer wheels tell you when and how much to steer.
Sir I'm new and trying to get my CDL at CR England. Been here for 9 days trying to understand backing. This is what I needed to hear. Everything is clear to me now. I over complicated things. Thanks
Amazing how he made it look so easy. I was taught to turn your steering first a full one wheel turn followed by a quarter to the right (or whatever if opposite vice-versa) then slowly start backing till the driver side edge of your trailer points to the "key cone" ..
This is by far the most easiest instructional video on Offset backing. I've been having trouble with backing, it's now the end of my course I'm getting ready to do my road test and I still can't do an offset backing. I don't know how I'm gonna do on my road test.
If im trying to go from left to right lane i just pull up to end of track, stop, crank wheel all the way to left until the nose of my tractor is at a 30-40 degree angle(this is the hardest part),STOP, crank it all the way to the right, STOP once straightned out. Then i backup until my left most rear tire is a foot or less away from the front inside cone.. then slight right turns into the box. Its easy and produces results at my school. Keep on trucking people! Try this method and the vids method and keep whatever works best for you!
This is the best video I have seen so far. I am trying to learn offset backing. This seems easy. If you could explain little bit about how long to keep the steering wheel turned before you follow the trailer. And if you could post a video about Parallel parking? Thanks.
why do people say turn hard to the left to go to the right then wait and turn fast to other side until lined up wit the trailer. The way you are doing seem safe and better.
im not gonna lie i was playing euro truck driver and i tried this maneuver like ten times on it instead of auto park and after the 11th try it worked this video is extremely helpful
This is how my trainer did it, I am working with a 28ft trailer it's harder because it's so much easier to over correct because it turns so much faster, but this video was very helpful. Thank you!
Good advice on not over-steering. I am in trucking school now and I am watching these people do the offset backing. And they are almost jacknifing the truck to make the turn. I will remember the "keep it in your mirrors"
That's how I was taught but it certainly did not work on my first CDL attempt, I failed the offset back. I'm gonna try this guys method for my next attempt.
Beautiful! Looks a lot simpler than what my school said: when right rear trailer tire at picot point turn steer wheel maximum left and back up until you see mark about 20" in on landing gear cross bar, then steer wheel maximum to right and reverse until trailer straight. Then reverse straight back until left rear trailer tire on pivot line, then steering wheel maximum to the right and backup until trailer is straight in box and wheel maximum to the left until trailer straight.
This is a very useful technique. The thing with this technique is this, the first cut 1 steering wheel turn to the left , as soon as the trailer starts cutting slowly follow the trailer and get the tractor, trailer lined up. Then when the back left corner of the trailer is lined up with the dock line do 1 steering wheel turn to the right, once the wall of the trailer is almost parallel with the dock line get the tractor trailer straight. Do a pull up if you have to and don't be afraid to get out and look at any point if you have to.
I can’t wait until I finish school for this. I just got down the straight backing after last weekend. My instructor feels I’m ready for this step now in the video. I told him after this weekend then I will move on to it.

Just failed offset backing on my CDL exam at a testing centre in Ottawa,ON...super tight in the test "road area". I tried the "super fast" aggressive steering method and it wouldn't work at all! Don't make the mistake I did.
Wow, looks really easy! I understand people have different ways of doing offset but at least the teachers should look for the best and easy way to help us understand cuz my teacher told me something different and it's the hard way. Just st from watching this video l can do better the next time, good to you.
Hi bro I want to say thank you for everything you did , I was watching your videos and practice , you make me did it as profficinal , you tech me how to drive ,thanks man God blessed you and your family
when you say one turn to the left. do you mean one full turn? also do you use any reference points like landing gear or corner of trailer passes center cone? (driver side w\Left to right offset and blind side w\Right to Left?
It would help if you told people what mirror you're looking at after each move you make...mirror are the most important part of backing...... you made this look so easy but you don't mention all the steps it takes to make it happen... you need more detail in this video.... but this video will still help people, great job.
It's pretty obvious in an offset... if you can't see in your right mirror because your trailer is blocking it then why look there? Most of your vision will be in your left mirror... probably 85% of it.
Let's just say I go to a school can't say which one because I can't but wish I had you as a instructor .my school taught me differently from your video .they told us when turning to turn right match trailer to half way mark to tractor back window then turn left until trailer hits past the middle of tractor window .I like your way better
Question is your you tube channel going to be updated. Is your school still in business. Just asking because I still have your channel and videos from 4 yrs ago.
He might had use longer space then the space they use at school? The School used the length of the truck plus 12 feet longer. He just said as much room as you can
Im trying to learn this right now. Just struggling with the timing. Right before I'm supposed to angle the trailer toward the first cone is where it all falls apart. I don't know how to correct my oversteering. I keep doing it even when I I think I'm not.
Does the method of only turning your wheel once to the left also apply if you are further down the parking lot and have a bigger gap between the trailer and the parking spot?
I just got a job driving a semi and Im having difficulties reversing especially in tight areas. Reversing in rigid trucks are easy but the articulated is another story. can you give advise on how to reverse in tight or narrow areas. also when reversing straight, for some reason the trailer decides to go of course. Is there a way to fix that? I seem to over correct and I stuff myself up continuously. I know how to reverse my car trailer but reversing a semi is a different ball game.
Nice one, so it is just one turn of the steering wheel on the opposite side. And then it proceeds as a straight line backing one you see the cone at the mirror.
around.48 when you say don't lose sight of your trailers are speaking of the passenger side? I test out tomorrow don't know if you will get this in time nut I'm going to try this, Thanks for the video

I'm having trouble it's my second day yesterday was never racking lol ran over cones but my teacher tell us to turn wheel all the way first then second step maybe it's harder that way I'm going try this way

So basically don't wait to see the middle of the landing gear I test in a few days and this been a major problem at my school for alot of students what you explained looks more simple these instructors are telling students to catch the middle of landing gear make a hard right or left wheel turned all the way then get back under the trailer
@EmbraceYOURTruth I passed months ago I don't know if you are replying to me soon as you see the middle of the landing gear but make sure you watching your trailer as well gives you a good idea on how your going to get in the box

What?
wow, simple, clear instruction, straight to the point! Thanks for the pointers sir!

Tigger Snacks jsjojkk0+??/:-
why you explained this better than my instructor at my school who talks on the phone and expects to get it on the first try.
Oversteering is a key point, nice vid
It would help if you told people what mirror you're looking at after each move you make...mirror are the most important part of backing...... you made this look so easy but you don't mention all the steps it takes to make it happen... you need more detail in this video.... but this video will still help people, great job.
It's pretty obvious in an offset... if you can't see in your right mirror because your trailer is blocking it then why look there? Most of your vision will be in your left mirror... probably 85% of it.
I tried that for the first time and it wasn't as easy as it looks. Great video, can't wait to try it again.
Very brilliant and smart backing
I am in Clarksville TN trying to get this and man it's the only thing I am struggling with. I am waking up hearing "Tandems and cones"
Wow, he made that look easy! Good job!
Thank you. Got my CDL in 2009 & going for mentoring on Monday. Rusty as Hell
dude you are a bad ass driver
Thank u so much I'm new CDL holder u made it so understandable 🙏
He might had use longer space then the space they use at school? The
School used the length of the truck plus 12 feet longer. He just said as much room as you can
Taking my test this Friday 9/7/18. Awesome and helpful video!
I was messing up doing full big turns in the beginning. 1/4 turns guys all it takes!
Just one quarter turn of the wheel?
But they taught me aggressive turning and I get lost in the middle of nowhere it looks a bit easier
Me too
If only it was that easy

You are the skilled truck driver bro..
Def trying thos tomorrow morning to see how it works
Beautifully done!
Man you look it way easy....ain’t that easy bro!
Thank you for showing that this can be achieved without turning the wheel all way from one angle to the other.
this guy is a great driver
I think I'd pull over pulling forward then back straight up. 48 long haul I'd say always back straight if you can
I have problems doing my offset when you do your videos can you please show your Steering wheel
Good Explanation and back up method
Im trying to learn this right now. Just struggling with the timing. Right before I'm supposed to angle the trailer toward the first cone is where it all falls apart. I don't know how to correct my oversteering. I keep doing it even when I I think I'm not.
He made it look easy but it’s difficult very can’t wait til I get it
Does the method of only turning your wheel once to the left also apply if you are further down the parking lot and have a bigger gap between the trailer and the parking spot?
Very helpful video thanx for posting
Stay patient I took the test 5 times finally passed
I just got a job driving a semi and Im having difficulties reversing especially in tight areas. Reversing in rigid trucks are easy but the articulated is another story. can you give advise on how to reverse in tight or narrow areas. also when reversing straight, for some reason the trailer decides to go of course. Is there a way to fix that? I seem to over correct and I stuff myself up continuously. I know how to reverse my car trailer but reversing a semi is a different ball game.
BEAUTIFUL DEMONSTRATION
Nice one, so it is just one turn of the steering wheel on the opposite side. And then it proceeds as a straight line backing one you see the cone at the mirror.
around.48 when you say don't lose sight of your trailers are speaking of the passenger side? I test out tomorrow don't know if you will get this in time nut I'm going to try this, Thanks for the video
Dang, youar good! You make it look so EZ!👍
My instructor keeps telling me to turn the wheel all the way and then tells me i turned too much. They don't even teach me what to look out for. They just keep telling me when to turn and I'm not getting it.
Great vedio so simple and so much information thank you for helping out and opening door to this career and us getting inform
Clean nice instruction video 👍👌. Thanks!
I'm having trouble it's my second day yesterday was never racking lol ran over cones but my teacher tell us to turn wheel all the way first then second step maybe it's harder that way I'm going try this way
you're a good driver Sean
I have a test tomorrow good luck to me!
How did it go?
Sir I ask one question can I join your CDL trucking classes in India its possible or not if possible so plese tell me who I join your classes because I saw all CDL classes video in youtube but no one good teacher compair then you .....
That looked real fucking easy, I'm out on the pad right now doing this maneuver & having a little bit of a hard time. I feel like driving a 20' trailer for the last 3yrs has given me some bad habits I need to break.
Tanks bro that’s really helpful 🙏🏾💪
So basically don't wait to see the middle of the landing gear I test in a few days and this been a major problem at my school for alot of students what you explained looks more simple these instructors are telling students to catch the middle of landing gear make a hard right or left wheel turned all the way then get back under the trailer
Right ! Imma try this method before I test out this week ! How did it go for you?
@EmbraceYOURTruth I passed months ago I don't know if you are replying to me soon as you see the middle of the landing gear but make sure you watching your trailer as well gives you a good idea on how your going to get in the box
Excellent, can you do a video on 90 back up?
dude you made it look so easy!
I have a Problems with my offset can you give me some good pointers please take my test Monday
Did you pass your test?
I wonder how long that truck is because I’m using a 53” inch truck? And we are taught to do the 45 degree angle.
Nice offset parking ☆
man I need to learn this backing with a trailer.
I did it yesterday for first time and got it on first try
Do you have a demo for the opposite side?
I think this is the easiest way I have seen, I am learning the v and it is pain on my tail!!!
I've been training on that shit for a week and it cam get difficult& tedious.
Thank you sir! You make it look easy. I'll study this video.
We pulled up as far as possible, all the way to the left until we could see the air lines, all the way to the right until the trailer was straight, then just snake it in.
Thanks, Brother. Huge help here!
