- The official video for 'This Is the Picture (Excellent Birds)' featuring vocals from co-writer Laurie Anderson.
The song features on the first of Peter’s studio albums to have a proper title, So was a watershed release in his career. Its marriage of the artistic and the commercial made for an indisputable success, with the album quickly sitting atop the album charts on both sides of the Atlantic.
Aside from some intriguing collaborations - with Laurie Anderson on This Is The Picture, Kate Bush on Don’t Give Up and Youssou N’Dour on In Your Eyes - it was the unity of singer, band and producer that made So such a crucial record in the Gabriel canon.

watch them sing, there they go
LOL!
Excellent dimples.
Freaking brilliant. We need more music like this.
No we dont
It’s out there now. Just look for it. Late night TV has artists on that are sometimes like this.
@@josephparent2628 lol
@@jenniferdixon7633 spoken word artists really?
Oh yes we do
Laurie still has the same hair and looks almost exactly the same, 28 years later! :)
saw her in 2019. still true!
This is actually a Special mix for this Clip. It is different to the Version on Laurie`s Album and on Peter`s "So". All 3 Versions are like an Evolution of one song - plus the brilliant funky live Versions, that came later.
I was just going to say that this version kind of sounds like a cross between the two album versions - "fuller" than the one on Mr Heartbreak, but not quite as "world music" as the one on So. They both love reworking their own material anyway, don't they?
This version was for a television show called "Good Morning Mr. Orwell" that aired on New Year's Day 1984. This was the first version the public heard.
I thought it felt a little different.
Ah snap! Yes. It's a little different. Love it but love "the original" (if i can call the longer mix that) even more... Always found it sounds best played *exceedingly* loud...👍
In my opinion two musical geniuses together.
I think Laurie had a fantasy going on in her mind as an artist/musician.
Listen to the bass, excellent bass.
I was just introduced to Laurie Anderson by way of language is a virus. And I end up here. I have faith again in God. Peter Gabriel with Laurie Anderson... I'm literally crying right now lol.
You should give full credit for this work to the creative artists, human individuals who made it, not to your imaginary creator - why would you want to downgrade them and let them down like that??
@@stojadinovicdushanyour concept of God and mine are very different. We are all part of the great I am.
Peter Gabriel is one of the most talented UNDERRATED Music artists - both video and musical, in my life. Peter Gabriel is the Best. He has been a Soundtrack to my life. I cannot thank you enough Peter Gabriel - God Bless You
you are right
He wrote all the lyrics to 'The lamb lies down on broadway' album by Genesis. best album ever
I agree.best album ever.
He's been one of the most influential people in the industry. I mean, the guy's a legend. It's hard to say he's underrated, though maybe the younger generation doesn't have so much appreciation for his work.
How is he underrated? By WHO?! He's sold many millions of records/tapes/CDs/downloads, is well recognised throughout the industry and one or more of his videos are STILL often voted into "Top 10 Music Videos". Underrated... Pffft.
I absolutely LOVE Peter AND Laurie (I even buy their books ha-ha).
I'be been in many of their shows.
Love this song in both vertions (Laurie's and Peter's albums)
Seeing them together is a great experience.
Thank you Peter Gabriel, you have been in my head since I was a teenager. My favorite (non guitar playing) musician/artist of all time!
✌👽👍🧠🎶🎵🌌
Laurie Anderson so beautiful so subtle so strong
ANOTHER TIMELESS CLASSIC!! 80'S MUSIC RULES!! the dj
Miss music days like these
I love this song, always have, but never once knew that there was a video for this one! 😳🤘
Authentic and original blend of artwork and emotions, salut P.G.
This is one of the rare four minute songs that leaves you begging for a whole bunch more. Heck, I could listen to a whole album side of this jam.
The same way a POW in WW2 would beg for more, am I right?
@@josephparent2628 What are you talking about?
@@josephparent2628 Stop listening to him and making negative comments if you aren't enjoying it because we all are!
Personnage et musicien intemporel ! THANKS THANKS THANKS...
Two more unique people you will never find. Though I bet Laurie Anderson and Lou Reed was always an interesting conversation over morning coffee.
love her .saw her only once felt lucky
Holy xxx, think Mr. Gabriel just left a message. From the heart, we were all beautiful and new then. All my love!
This song migrates to the bones-hypnotic, meditative, haunting. Amazing!
I'm such a big fan of laurie Anderson. Such a great talent. Then you factor in peter Gabriel win win. Progressive rock is the best
I believe in a documentary of So that I saw a little while back they mentioned how they got Laurie Anderson, recorded and mixed this song as well as filmmed the music video in 3 days as this song was a last minute inclusion to the album
Such a great song. I love it. P.G. and L. A. had good chemistry together.
This man oozes talent
I'm sorry, i think you autocorrected lacks for oozes.
This woman too.
Bill Laswell, mastermind of Herbie Hancock's "Rockit" and bassist, is on bass on this song, as well as Chic's Nile Rodgers on guitar. :)
Actually... the BASS Is being done by the GREAT "Tony Levin"! One of THE GREATEST BASS PLAYERS of ALL TIME!
And I'm a DRUMMER! But I would SO LOVE To jam with Tony!
Here.. check out THIS Video to see what I mean! ruclips.net/video/zmI2nduAT20/видео.html
@@j.s.connolly8579 Bill Laswell is playing bass on this song, check the credits. It's the only song on the album in which Tony Levin did not contribute bass.
@@colonelmotorov5854 Damn, you're right. I could have sworn it was 'That Voice Again'. So, my question about whether this was bass or Chapman Stick is irrelevant.
Wonderful song by P.G. ! Long . Excellent son
Peter Gabriel super. thanks so much. отличное видео хорошей песни.
2 magnificent artists made the timeless masterpiece.
Thank you both.
Peter Gabriel WOW ...I grow with him .....man still sounds great ....
Always one of my favorite songs from Peter. I never saw this video though .... Awesome
The man with a fantasy going on in his mind !
after many years still GREAT
Flawless. Superb musicianship.
Such a wonderfully 80's video.
Wow! I can't believe I had never landed on this gem passing over 20 years of searching for Peter Gabriel and Genesis videos
algorithm got better input? !
Ich liebe seine Musik der Mann ist einfach der beste Musiker und Künstler der Welt ❤️❤️❤❤❤❤
80s Beautiful synthesizer dynamism pop. Glamorous fascination music sounds. Great.
Peter and Laurie... this song couldn't have been anything else. It's perfect, just as it was then. So... Perfect.
Laurie Anderson is amazing. Love Peter, too.
Yes...yes she is (-: RIP Lou
thank you for your bravery!!! this song still holds many truths!! xoxo
What that you're adopted?
Man, Peter's got some moves!
I have made it a personal mission over the years to discover (uncover) and know as many of the alternate versions and rarities and b-sides .. much lesser known PG material than what his main catalog offers. I must say, it is always a treat whenever I uncover yet more, that I'd never heard. I dig the extra percussion in this cut. It gives it more flair than the (So) original.
Yes,that's the thing I noticed straight away, that the percussion is different to that which adds to the oddness of the version that closes out So.
I love this retreatment of one of the more obscure tracks on So. 😊
I remember that This Is The Picture was included on the CD and cassette versions of So.
I have always loved this track - great to finally see it! didn't get to see PG in South Africa until the end of Apartheid.
excellent tout court !!! and beautiful Peter !
Two creative geniuses in the music industry in my opinion.
one of my all-time favorite songs, I Love Peter Gabriel!!!
And I did too, until he touched me at mass 17 years ago. He told me this is the picture
Excellent song , he is fantastic !
Excellent birds, but I think Lil Pump has more artistic ability than this fruitcake
@@josephparent2628 mate you made me choke on my coffee. No one who has “lil” in their name can be taken seriously. This man who is essentially called little
Pump is not even in the same league as Peter Gabriel. Gabriel was a revolutionary in the music scene. Little Pump is nothing more that a pompous prick
Long words... excellent words. I can hear them now.
nice, merci BCP!
OMG, i haven't seen it before !! Awesome !! Thanks !!
And thank you, for letting me know that Im not the worst person on the planet
Indeed! I had not heard this or seen it til today!
Maybe if your parents loved you you wouldnt have ever seen it
wonderful!

This is such a wonderful sparse and eclectic song... Who directed the video?
Was it Laurie? She directed Sharkey's Day and this has a similar feel (without
animation of course). Wish there was more chemistry between them though...
At least there was some cool choreography as if they are wading in water! 💙
This is A song, excellent song!
Actually, this song was on a 1984 album of Laurie's that I had (yes, I'm aging myself)... which came out before So, which was 1986. The album was Mr. Heartbreak. Laurie and Peter co-wrote it for a video project called Good Morning Mr Orwell... :)
Two legends together.
Wow! I never knew they made a video of this track! Loves it so much xxxxx
What a great show this is 🤍
Laurie Anderson so brilliant
charming duo...
Whoa, I never knew they made a video for this album track. It's different than the one that's on the album but it's still good!
This is so 80's that my computer desk turned into Rubik's Cubes and I spontaneously grew Jheri curls.
Great song though. :)
The Soundscape Master at his best...
the '80's were the future..I love Peter's jacket!
1.FOXTROT,2.TREPASS,3. MELT,4.SO,5.UP😮❤
Nile Rodgers on guitar
Bill Laswell on bass.
This is the Music!!
I love birds..They are excellent
they are......
Excellent video and son. Never seen or heard them before. Made my day :-)
Wow, I never knew this video existed!!! I must have gotten lost somewhere along the way, thanks P.G.!!!
I wish you hadn't found your way of your mothers womb
heard this 100's of times in the 80-90s - great seeing a video for it......thanks! :)
Why would you ever listen to it?
❤2GENIUS of Music ❤ GREAT GABRIEL GREAT ANDERSON ❤
I love Peter Gabriel
And your parents dont love you
I recall buying this record and this song seemed like an add on, what an add on !! I had seen video work Laurie had done, so I recognized her name. I moved to Toronto when this was released, long ago and far away now....
Love her version as well
I never really liked this song much-before today. Now, it makes perfect sense! His music speaks to my soul-expressing what I can't put into words...
excellent Peter!
It is so weird to see Mr. Gabriel this young, it's amazing how close and far away he was from Genesis at the time.
Aquarius ahead of the times!!!!
im 24 yrs old and this is more impressive than the videos i see now. BRING THESE KIND OF VIDEOS BACK !!
Its people like you that give cause for Satan to exist.
Take a picture, I see pictures of People! Terrific Jam, Big Hearts to everyone, Later, from Sunny Southern Florida 🌴
incredible

Good song👍
Music has to be revolutionized from the inside out in the year 2016 where we make mind expanding advante garde creative music pop music like this again.
I prefer J Biebs to this and that sounds like a hate crime.
Arca
Okay. So "PL>Y the videos" is not complete🤯. Well! I'm not going to complain. Part of the appeal of Peter Gabriel as an artist is. One is always discovering new and different stuff from him. 🙂
That was picture 1986...WOW ..cool video nice remix jam ....song sounds like ..the future .....2016 ....
+Michael jones lol no it doesn't
Actually this version is from 1983 or 4
Lol, no it doesnt
I don't remember hearing this song. It's really good!
It's on So, Peter's 5th album post Genesis.
Love the rhytmic guitar...
Nile Rodgers, apparently
MTV live at midnight New Years 1984, freakin amazing, saw it live on the tube
I love all three versions of this song.
I remember seeing this video on a PBS show called "Alive From Off-Center" back in the 80's. It is my favorite version of the song.
Yeah I remember that series. I loved it. It was one of the few interesting things on television in the 80s.
I don't think Ruff-Ruff man from the PBS classic Fetch with Ruff-Ruff man would allow such an abomination to be aired on his channel
Finally this is ON! Haven't seen this video in ages! Thanks Peter! :D
I guess it's only a matter of minutes until the stupid german GEMA revokes my right to watch it. >:(
Two weird and awesome artists collaborating, gotta lurv it
PG essentially auditioning producers with Nile and Laswell on the track. I think this picks up Security funk and moves it further...Eno Byrne etc NYC life is captured in this song.
Probably the best period of your art live.
Magnifique l archange gabriel
i swear how i only find out this has a video now
