In October 1987 after many months on the road, it was in the elevated surroundings of the hillside open-air theatre at Lycabettus overlooking Athens, that the "So" tour came to a climactic close. The three nights were filmed in what was the first-ever Peter Gabriel concert to be committed to film. As a concert film, it was brilliantly shot and has now been equally brilliantly remastered, a crystal-clear record of Gabriel and band in their mid-80s pomp. The viewer is placed right in the heart of the action all the way, from the band's synchronised choreography on opening number "This Is The Picture", right through to the skin-pricking closer "Biko". In between, we're lost in music, spellbound by the spectacle, totally absorbed by the imperfection-free tightness of a band that's been on the road for so long.

FM synth, steinberger guitar, a chapman stick and the trench coats. it's impossible to get any more peak 80s
never a truer word spoken , and really old huge very visible headset mics
What about spastic dancing and headbands? ✔ and ✔
that horrible white bat-sleeve jacket....imo the 80s were without doubt the decade with the most taste-crimes in fashion and design. btw: this whole actually great song sounds totally quantized. there´s no movement in tempo. another crime of the 1980s.
@@markuselipka There's a drum computer in it for sure along with the live ones.
Not quite... I don't see any Simmons drums. Thank god :-D. I love 80s music, but those things were a bit too much.
We just saw him in late 2023 in Vancouver B.C. and he still runs around the stage, perhaps a little more sedately, and puts on the best show you've ever seen. He's a legend, a legend with ever new material, innovation, creativity and originality. Brilliant!
I saw part of that here on YT!
He did "Sledgehammer" and blew me away with how strong his vocals and energy were...
This is the best description of the 2023 tour I’ve seen yet. Shows were spectacular. Gabriel is Gabriel. Always. Always the greatest showman
Bryan Ferry ist besser!!!
I bet Phil Collins wishes he could too.
@@philsmgb4393 WE all do.
Peter Gabriel is a legitimate genius. The quality of the whole band, plus his choreography, and the deep meaning of his music is almost unparalleled. He is a extremely talented in several ways.
@THE URANIUM CAFE LOL, very funny.
Funny how people can have completely opposite views.
I find this absolutely cringeworthy.
@@anarchycastro Agreed. This is song is stupid and so too is Gabriel's monkey "choreography."
@Suq Madiq First of all, he had to come up with the choreography himself and he is singing live. It's very impressive. His timing and cleverness is excellent. Think what you want.
@@TomWatsonB1 You must understand that no one necessarily saying Gabriel is lacking for talent. The production quality here is excellent and he is unquestionably a great performer. However, the lyrics to this throwaway track are absurd, and to elaborately mime the movements of a primate without a hint of irony? He comes off looking like a member of The Wiggles.
Now you may very well be The Wiggles' biggest fan, so I'm sorry if that critique hits a little too close to home; but the only way Gabriel could redeem this very dated part of his catalogue would be to say that he and the band put it together while in the midst of a week-long cocaine binge and that the dance moves were an elaborate tongue-in-cheek test to see whether those lacking in taste (that'd be you) would actually accept it unflinchingly.
There was a hilarious moment, when between two songs a girl from the audience shouted ''Peter I love you!'' P.G. said, "I think I asked you to be discreet''. Then, in the next break a group of guys shouted all together, PETER WE LOVE YOU ! He said, ''And I have asked YOU to be even more discreet ! '' LOL !
...and Bingo-Bongo`s comments :"Uh!"
LOLOLOLOL!!!!!!!
@@passion4posh It might have been all prearranged you know, but it was still funny ! Especially with the guys ! Anyway, what a historic event ! I am glad I was there !
😂👍🏼
Tony Levin is a genius, and a class act. Oh, and that Gabriel guy … the absolute BEST!
David Rhodes
And it seems Tony never ages.
Peter Gabriel is my spirit animal. Absolute genius.
This song was a huge turning point for Gabriel. His label in the US hated this song and the whole album; Gabriel's millions of fans felt the opposite.
Shows what record label executives know! Idiots! They rejected BAT OUT OF HELL! 7 BEST SELLING ALBUM OF ALL TIME! FuCK THEM!
Including me and loved him solo so much better then with Genesis and when he left it was a win win.
"Security" is an incredible album. Screw the label. As an added bonus, Tony Banks LOVED it.
High School memories ..Friday Night Videos great times being a teen
He occupies a wonderfully weird stage presence about halfway between a traditional rock frontman, and a more pop-style choreographed show. Very unique performer
Yes he's very purposeful and thoughtful with his choreography.
I can't believe this is not playback. Perfect singing while jumping and running...
Very likely overdubbed in the studio. Take a close look at 2:04 - 2:06
@@montimer44 Crystal clear.
Yep, and I hate to be nerdy but this is a semitone higher than the record, but the guitar is showing it being played in the original key of Dm
@@hopetea7670 I know a greek guy who was at this very concert. Now he has just sued Peter Gabriel for fraud.
Shock the Monkey was my gateway drug to Peter Gabriel. It will forever be a favorite of mine.
I was there all 5 nights (3 nights of proper concerts and 2 nights of extra shooting). This concert has marked my life.
Luckyyy!!!!!!!
dang
I would go too but I was five years old.
You could do a small video of your experience.
i was there too in one of the nights, will remember lay your hands on me forever
Peter's stage antics are brilliantly conceived and executed, Manu's drumming is phenomenal, and this entire band just rocks! Incredible performance!
Jagger has nothing on these moves.
All his musicians seem to really enjoy playing Peter’s music. All his live videos show the same enthusiasm in his musicians.
His songs are always amazing and unique to all his other songs.
the studio version is great, but the live version is even greater.peter and the rest of the band brings so much energy to the song.
The studio version has so much more to it than energy, and is yet to have been beaten (it likely won't be). The atmosphere and sonic pallet is brilliant for the time, and still holds up perfectly. This is good, but he perfected it the first time.
I have loved this lineup: David Sancious, Tony Levin, Manú Katche, David Rhodes, and the big monkey Peter Gabriel !!!!!!!
Peter Gabriel needs to be mentioned in the same breath as all the top musicians and performers in history.
He's talented, but let's pump the brakes on that! "Shock the monkey with the monkey" isn't exactly going to put the fear of god into Mozart, or even the Beatles, for that matter.
@jamesrowden303 LOL! Yes, it is amazing how territorial and absolutely precious some fans can be on here! I'm a huge Neil Young fan, and a few years ago I had the temerity to call Neil out on a few of the really shitty decisions he's made over the years in how he's treated other bandmates, etc. Anyway, this Neil fanboy came down on me with the wrath of 10,000 suns! He was so upset I thought he was actually going sue me for slandering Neil!
@jamesrowden303 I think the main vocal on this is prerecorded as well. Absolutely no hint of breathiness while he's jumping all over the place. Human lungs and vocal apparatus just don't work like that.
That's my cousin, Tony Levin, playing bass! He's a master!
He's the best damn bass player in the world
yeah and my mother is the singer
@@devthousI'm pretty sure Tony has relatives and that they might watch RUclips
He is fantastic, not just technically, but in his creativity with the instrument. I discovered 1980s King Crimson this year, and have been blown a way.
I need a DNA sample before I'll believe that 😆
Manu's drumming is badass.
Astonishing that he could sing that well with all the jumping around.
What a kick'n version and what a performance by the whole band!
This is easily one of the most amazing videos I've ever seen in my life just blown away with how well they perform this live I was not expecting that
Ήμουν εκεί!!!
Από τις πιο όμορφες μουσικές εμπειρίες της ζωής μου.
Πανσέληνος, Λυκαβηττός, Peter Gabriel!!
What a voice! And an amazing band. Best live performance
"Live".
the video quality is amazing for the time
It's film that has been remastered, I believe.
35mm film. You could get up to 5.6k resolution from the negatives.
@@razmatazz9310 35mm film multi-camera set up.
Wow I don;t think I have ever watched something so 80's without the distortion of VHS and interlacing. Its nice to be able to so clearly see the details, and all the equipment they where using. I work with several bands that still use a lot of the same equipment used here.
we like your song peter gabriel regards from germany andreas surrey and magdalena bialy
OMG... Peter is just awesome...!
The drummer is just an absolute fucking UNIT. That band has the chops of a DINOSAUR!
One of the best live performers I know !!
Amazing performance!
Wow that's amazing! It's very rare to watch a video from the 80's in HD, cool!
GOAT 🔥
I love the way he's dancing
Ditto😂
And he's still got it! I saw him on this last tour and was amazed at how well his voice has held up.
3:06 Manu's drumming was so epic that even the bass couldn't handle it
beautiful work this our´s peter gabriel . . . !
I was there 3 nights .... one of the best concerts !!!
I remember crying when Gabriel left Genesis...he was my first musical hero and really I knew no better and thought he would never be seen again... Thankfully having seen him countless times as a solo artist his music is timeless and every concert was a joy...
Happy to have attended this concert, it was great! An amazing show.
Those dance moves...those clothes...good god the 80s
I agree with You.
The musician I most admired throughout my life! Saw him live in '86, he had almost a magnetism on stage at that time that doesn't really translate in a video. When I first saw the original video of "Shock the monkey" in 1980 on TV I didn't understand the music, it was so much ahead of it's time.... Oh, and he always used to play with great musicians, such a talented band! Thank you Peter for all your music...
What a band.
Loved it. No clue what it means but just love this song and Peter Gabriel.Great beat;fun dance; amazing backup musicians and the man can sing. So there!
I was 17 - what an amazing concert at Earls Court, London! Manu on drums --- what a treat.
I was there, too, with my big sister and her friend who lived in London - we travelled there from abroad. What a concert! I was 19, my sister was 21. She has not spoken to me in almost 20 years now - though that has nothing to do with Mr. Gabriel. So sad how life sometimes goes.
Just hear this song after years again and I instantly get Goosebumps
I sorta forgot how much great music came out in the 1980s....there was so much of it, some of it got lost in the shuffle and I didn't get to appreciated it at the time.
I LOVE THIS SONG
Peter and his amazing band
Une des meilleures chansons de Peter Gabriel, accompagnées de musiciens de haut vol. Grandiose. C'est juste exemplaire. Une des meilleures performances live de Peter Gabriel.
I was there ... magnificent night
Such an underrated artist
best live version i've ever seen.
great audio and video quality
OMG... Peter is just awesome...!
Is it live or is it Memorex?
Seems dubbed to me
@@deasttn yeah it does seem dubbed, fantastic performance though
Since a friend suggested Peter solo, had listened to early Genesis Awesome stuff.
Saw Peter solo 2 times, number 1 frontman!
And I listen to a ton of variety in music. Great video.
The extraordinary and unique Peter Gabriel 💚
Аmazing song, I and the kids do not stop singing!!!
Finally, some good quality video footage from a 80's concert. Makes me feel younger.
Great backing vocals from the guitarist!
Guitarist called mr David Rhodes! :)
@@agricola39 Right-o, Ville! I'm so impressed u know the other talented musicians' names as I do! 😃😉🎶🎵🎤🎸🎹
I just can't stop hearing this song!!!
OMG... Peter is just awesome...!
Tony Levin ! !
Never noticed how close Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel are when it comes to singing voices
That is what you call a live performance, no shaking asses, no make up, no glam just pure brilliance. No wonder this song is in my top 5 favourite songs of all time.
no insane costumes though :(
Lots of pelvic thrusts though
I think a band can wear makeup and still be good though, just look at some photos of early Queen, makeup and rock, well light makeup, eyeliner and painted nails really.
Que fina música, que estilo para con la guitarra y los elementos electrónicos, y por supuesto la voz del gran Peter Gabriel.
WAS--15--YEARS OLD--AND WAS THERE WITH MY MOTHER!!!!THIS IS--ART!!!!
@Private Account oh shut it
τυχερός.
Manu Katché and all the orhers are awesome. manu said in an interview that when PG contacted him to play on So, he couldn't believe him lol. He was a well known drummer in France but not that much. and now what a career he has. He's very thankful to Peter (and Sting, he played with him too)
I used to have a white jacket like that in the late 80s !
(didn´t we all)
Authentic music for an Authentic era
Στον Λυκαβητό, ήμουν εκεί. Από τις καλύτερες συναυλίες που έχουν γίνει στη χώρα. Και έχω πάει σε πολλές. Peter Gabriel, ένα ανεξάντλητο ταλέντο.
What a great place to watch a show.
That drumming is as smooth as butter, especially the splash and china work.
Fantastic, unique, unforgettable Peter ;o)
if i had (have) a big crush on peter gabiel. perfect. beautiful and complex and crazy.
Nobody came close to Gabriel back in the 80's as a solo performer and never missed a concert 😎
huh? Phil blew his doors off for one.
Bowie perhaps ? Sometimes Prince?
@@schmiggidy not the same intensity and theatricality, sorry. Thats more contrived. Lately it could very well be Yves Tumor and maybe Prince with Wendy & Lisa but then he lost it
@@schmiggidy we’re talking about Peter Gabriel here not a televangelist, thats why I went a different route re Black artists

Tremendo show! Hermoso Peter!!

Tony Levin ! !
What a great live sound. His stage acting is brilliant. He is really into it.
Great Quality for 1987.
Those must have been some expensive camera's back then.
It was shot on film. Film has much higher resolution than video.
I love 1987❤
*Bella e movimentata esibizione di Peter !*
Who in the name of all that's holy gave the thumbs down to this video? Gabriel is a genius....
One of the best frontmans.
one of the few cases where the live version is better than the album version
Peter Gabriel and these musicians were so tight. Also, great 6 years later with Secret World live. Purely a great songwriter and group.
Peter ...The best
Incredible artist, great musician, fantastic singer. Absolutely unique in his style and performance. Amazing Peter Gabriel.
Why are Brits so FUCKING musical
Feels good to not see mobile phones by the audience
I can't believe he moved like that while singing at the same time. What a beast.
Such an underrated artist

This is both musical and visual delight. Peter Gabriel knows how to do it!
Yeehaw...Peter and his band does it again. What a master...and his band...simply awesome..im partial to the bass hes is just incredible.jam on boys.
Dynamic sounding vocal and lyric creativity. The instrumental supports the lyrics and vocal and sounds amazing...
My God what a set of musicians!!
I need to work this level of theatrics into my job as an IT analyst.
I've worked in computer science and hated it. I have seen as described.
@@charleshines3378 Real pity, as I have joined the club at most fundamental level about the time of this record, and still have huge lot of fun, even if today it is into shittiest of MS software or crappiest on Apple hardware+software behalf. Computing fundamentals are still dome to worship. Anyway, this record is awesome, have been with Peter long time now, still this one is an extraordinary experience.

My favorite PG song 😊
🎯
Freaking genius…..light years ahead of the rest
one of the greatest artists of all time
The best thing Peter Gabriel ever did in his career was leave genesis because it gave the world Phil Collins.
Cold Truth
I remember those point of view, mid tempo, '85/'86. River runned deep🎁(from Jujuy,Argentina)
Awesome performance love it.
I saw Peter circa this time at SUNY Buffalo. The crowd was so dense up front that I could lift my feet and literally ride like a particle in a wave back and forth following him when he moved across the stage. I ended up helping another guy to carry out a girl who was being crushed to death and screaming that she couldn’t breath.
Well done!
This whole concert is just incredible. Just wow. Speechless.
Amazing !incredible!good........
