    John Farnham's longtime back-up singers Lisa Edwards, Lindsay Field and Venetta Fields. Lisa Edwards plays percussion and flute: initially she was recruited as a flautist for the John Farnham Band in 1988 Lisa is probably best known to Australian audiences as one of John Farnham's accomplished and dynamic backing singers. Lindsay continues to work as vocal coach to some of Australia's newest talent starring in local productions and in London's West End. Venetta Fields was a backing vocalist for touring American and British rock and pop acts of the 1960s and 1970s, as well as working as a session recording vocalist, she worked with artists including Ike & Tina Turner, Pink Floyd, Humble Pie, Barbra Streisand, Elkie Brooks, Neil Diamond, Steely Dan, Boz Scaggs, Bob Seger and the Rolling Stones. After emigrating to Australia in 1982, she took up citizenship. She recorded or toured as a backing singer for Australian artists Richard Clapton, Australian Crawl, Cold Chisel, Jimmy Barnes, James Morrison and John Farnham. Peace out.

      And that's not even getting to the "musos", some of the best in the Biz:- Guitarist -Tommy Emmanuel director and keyboardist Chong Lim and David Hirshfield, Angus Burchall on drums, Brett Garsed on guitar, and Craig Newman on bass guitar and many others. Thankfully once in the hands of Glen Wheatley, (a fello muso) John never again had to work with a band who couldn't play. Glen knew to soar you need a good, no "great" band. And the magic happened.

      I’ve also seen a comment that the lead guitarist asked for it to be recorded so he could listen to the guitar part again later. That seems logical because it would be harder to hear if an incorrect note was played during the performance of the piece.
      I only came to know this piece through a reaction channel.
      Then I found it on Anthology 3, I think.
      So then I compared it with Led Zeppelin’s original. It seems very close to my uninitiated ears.
      That’s why I feel the accuracy of lead vocals, backup vocals & multiple instruments, resulted from lots of practice together.
      It also pushed the techs to the limit. If they were listening to a particular point that needed fine tuning this sound check would find it.

    He's the best singer of all time, and his band is without peer, and this is not rehearsed for a performance. It's basically a jam session. But there's no way this was a "one off". It's just too polished. It was his regular sound check song. Apparently he only actually performed it live to an audience once (I saw him 5 times and he never performed it). Did eventually make it onto an Anthology album.

    It wasn't a one off. It's obviously something the whole band has practiced. My understanding is that it's a warm up track and when they get together to practice they often have fun trying out new things. Not all of it makes it to a show. But depending on who's telling the story, it was used as a warm/ sound check regularly
    This actual recording from one sound check ended up making it onto one of his Rarities albums. So he definately "waxed that" ...I'm not sure why he never performed it at a concert, it was certainly good enough. Maybe copyright issues or something at that time.

I’ve seen several videos (reactions) of his most popular songs, and his back-up singers, and band are all VERY good (IMO). If you want to see something more recent, he sang at a fund raising concert (Fire Fight Australia) in early 2020, he performed his signature song ‘You’re the Voice’ - and at age 70, he was hitting all the notes (Brian May was accompanying on guitar)! Great reaction, as always… thanks!

    No doubt you know this of course, but one thing about TRULY great singers is they're entirely capable of producing live what they have recorded because they DON'T need to rely on 25 takes and all sorts of 'cheats'. That doesn't mean they won't do a few at least, but I'm sure you know what I mean.
    Apparently the version of "You're the Voice" that was released, for example, was the FINAL one done.
    He'd recorded a few, picked one, but then his manager (he managed John more or less forever) said he thought it wasn't as good as he'd heard John sing it when initially considering the song.
    John wasn't particularly happy with that,🤬, so went into the booth immediately and went at it almost in a "Don't like it? OK, COP THIS!!" manner.
    Supposedly that's the version that was released, all done in a single take.
    It's the story as told by those who ought to know, and it certainly sounds wholly believable.
    Think back to the really early days, of Elvis, Johnny Cash etc. A double track was about as sophisticated as they had.
    There are some great stories about Roy Orbison's recordings, including the first approximation of a 'booth'. He was in the room with strings and band recording "Running Scared" but going falsetto on the final note that MADE the song meant his voice wasn't being captured effectively.
    Fred Foster put a cloak rack between him and the band and told Roy he'd have to go full voice. Roy didn't think he could.
    When he DID, apparently EVERYONE was taken aback, not least Roy himself. 😲😂
    So much better than the hyper-manipulated swill churned out these days.
    I sound like a cranky old man, I know. 🤣
    p.s. 25-30 years ago I trained classically and belted to A5 a few times. NOT something I'd ever have needed to do live; an E5 was as high as any tenor piece I can think of. The ease with which John does E5 etc, repeatedly over several hours, is just one of many remarkable things about his voice and his mastery of it. His apparent tessitura is crazily high yet FULL as well.

    Yo. He normally has 3 backup singers in most of his bands. I was led to believe that this was a song they often did for a sound check at the time but don't think they did it in concert very often if at all. Its quite possible that they did it because the band are Led Zeppelin fans (who isn't) but is definitely has the feel of a band that has played this quite often even if just for fun.

I don’t know why Black Dog was never part of Farnsey’s concerts, can you imagine being there live for this? Most Aussie bands and artists are better live than recorded. The studios really overproduced artists bringing them into a tame, bland sound. While the artists themselves grew up playing live gigs in pubs all over australia to get their start. Years on the road, needing to sound great live to get rebooked into the same pubs next year, slowly moving up to bigger venues, small stages at music festivals, breaking out on Triple J, the public youth radio station. Mainstream radio mostly played ‘American and UK music. It was a favoured few Australians who made it to commercial radio.

    ❤‍🩹Yo...Yo.. Yo... LOL 😅🤣 Loved the reaction. Your face said it all. Yeap! He's the real deal. Throw John any song and he will master it and make it his own in any genre. Subscribed as I can't wait to see what you check out next!!! 50+year worth. From little (babyfaced 17yr old Johnny - 1967), through to 2020 when the world shut down, at 72, he is still amazing. Hoping that he really does do a "Final, final, final" farewell Concert. They say his vocal cords are okay, he's already singing around the house... probably still working on the reconstructed jaw, but we live in "Hope". If Mick Jagger, Keith Richards & Ray Charles and the rest are still performing, why not John!! Maybe, as he's actually get some recognition this time in America and around the World (following all the IT chat). Thanks, you've made me smile today...well with a smirk"... LOL💞

      Last bit of Trivia, as John grew older, he never "lowered" the original key of a song.

    Yo mate , Farnsey is another Aussie legend that we kept to ourselves for generations for what ever reason . Apparently he didn’t want to leave his wife and young fam to go overseas . So he stayed here with us 😊. Rumour has it he was offered the Queen job after Freddy passed but turned it down . We all grew up with Farnsey and he is part of out DNA 🧬 😊 Enjoy

    I don’t see how this could be the result of a single attempt or even just a few. It is so complex.
    The instruments, backup vocals & Farnham’s performance seem very slick as if this was regularly done to push the tech to its limits as well as warming up the whole crew & letting off steam.

    • @michaelgoyettemusic
      @michaelgoyettemusic  11 месяцев назад

      I tend to agree however the song is so iconic that’s it’s quite possible an instruction to know the song by the next day with some performance notes could have been sufficient for these pros. ✌️

      A warm-up song isn't just sung occasionally. By definition, it's used routinely, to warm-up the singer's voice, and the musicians' fingers/lungs. Most musicians will have specific pieces that require a range of notes, etc to get them going before the concert

  • @Saan42
    @Saan42 11 месяцев назад +1

    They definitely would have done this numerous times if it was a warmup. John's band is fantastic, but they wouldn't be this perfect if they'd never played it before. He usually had 3 backup singers - Venetta Fields, Lindsay Field, and Lisa Edwards - keep an eye out when you're watching his performances, you'll see them in pretty much every one.
    Anyway, this is a great performance, but much as I love John, Led Zeppelin and Robert Plant will always do it best for me :)
