John once said that the lyrics are more important to him when choosing new songs to perform because he can do his own thing with the music. He's proven that repeatedly.

I was lucky enough to see this in Sydney, what an amazing show. The main cast were made up of professional singers who were each household names in their own right.
The idea was to present JCS as a rock arena spectacular in the round, as opposed to a more traditional version using period costume.
To this day, the CD is on permanent rotation in my car.

Yes. He thoroughly inhabits every song, every note and every breath between. John is a Master Class Storyteller. In classical vocal / operatic terms; a Word Painter. This is a skill operatic and musical theatre 'greats' have specialist training toward - over decades. What's so important to understand about John, about his extraordinary talent is that he hasn't had a single vocal lesson. His musical intelligence, his dynamic flow just IS. 😊

Wow what a performance. I was fortunate enough to see the revival of Jesus Christ Superstar in NY around this same time with Ted Neely, Carl Anderson and Dennis DeYoung. I agree live theater is a feeling like no other. This performance here though was outstanding. The emotions he brought to the table. I know what you mean about the end and I would love to have seen him carry the scene through when he realizes they've all gone to sleep. I can only Imagine how it was. Oh yes please more theatrical performances, I love your reactions, just listened to your Home Free one also, but hell yeah, I'm on board with any and all live performances. Thank you for this. ✌🏻&❤

I must have watched just about everything he has done, hundreds of times, just to hear those soaring notes he hits and his innate ability to engender emotion in his audience. Every time I see this performance it takes my breath away. You hear every word and you feel every bit of his emotional delivery. He truly showed us 'The Agony in the Garden' as they sometimes refer to it. I know that the last part is different to most, but I feel after seeing him plead with his Father show his anger then acceptance.... the final call to "take me now before I change my mind" is delivered in such a hauntingly, moving way. Love your analysis as always....jumped over here as soon as I saw the link ...Thank you so much. Love from Australia

Moved. Loved your reaction and thank you once again for sharing this talent!
Controlled power and when we understand the character, SO much agony. This prayer is done so well - You can almost feel the blood falling from his brow. AMAZING.
Reminds us Jesus was human too. I understand this is "poetic license" but I had to look up the lyrics...
Here they are - can you imagine
Gethsemane (I Only Want To Say)"
    [Jesus:]
    I only want to say
    If there is a way
Take this cup away from me
For I don't want to taste its poison
Feel it burn me, I have changed
I'm not as sure as when we started
    Then I was inspired
    Now I'm sad and tired
    Listen, surely I've exceeded expectations?
Tried for three years, seems like thirty
Could you ask as much from any other man?
    But if I die
See the saga through and do the things you ask of me
Let them hate me, hit me, hurt me, nail me to their tree
I'd wanna know, I'd wanna know my God
I'd wanna see, I'd wanna see my God
    Why I should die?
Would I be more noticed than I ever was before?
Would the things I've said and done matter any more?
I'd have to know, I'd have to know my Lord
I'd have to see, I'd have to see my Lord
If I die, what will be my reward?
I'd have to know, I'd have to know my Lord
    Why should I die?
Can you show me now that I would not be killed in vain?
Show me just a little of your omnipresent brain
Show me there's a reason for your wanting me to die
You're far too keen on 'where' and 'how' and not so hot on 'why'
    Alright, I'll die!
    Just watch me die!
    See how I die!
    Then I was inspired
    Now, I'm sad and tired
After all I've tried for three years
Seems like ninety - why, then, am I
Scared to finish what I started?
What you started! - I didn't start it!
    God, thy will is hard
    But you hold every card
I will drink your cup of poison
Nail me to your cross and break me
Bleed me, beat me, kill me, take me now
    Before I change my mind

Thank you for your reaction. I was there that night, awestruck & holding my breath with many others. It was a minimalist production in the round and having seen the original Australian & London productions in the 70s I wondered about the stark set. I didn't have to. I was familiar with previous stage & film sets and the cast were so good that I didn't look away from them, especially John. I think this is one of John's finest examples of his connection with the lyrics, emotion and being of what he sings.

I sadly watched a reaction tonight that left me dumbfounded, and after I started to listen to the next reaction, I boiled over and vented on the "Reactor" for his disrespectful critic. All Farnham fans should avoid this particular "reactor". Iz, Eva Cassidy (check out Cassidy's Fields of Gold and Iz singing Over the Rainbow)...and John Farnham. Now, I knew who he was because I lived in Japan during the 80's. Australian pop music was everywhere. Then I come back stateside, and no one knows who I'm talking about. He just doesn't tour outside of his home base. Our loss. I would have loved hearing him live.

Gethsemane is the ultimate John Farnham performance, and this is the FINAL NIGHT! Even after performing this vocally demanding song night after night, he still elicits a feeling of despair and frustration. I'm not a Christian, but if anyone is capable of making me feel empathy with Jesus Christ, it's our Farnesey. And the live recording of the Aussie JCS is even better, if you believe it. I feel emotionally exhausted (and fulufilled) just listening to it.

Awful rendition of a perfectly composed piece of art. Why do people insist on trying to reinvent the wheel? This is contrived to be different and to me it's obvious.
Ian Gillans original version is the standard of genius and Ted Neeley's is just as beautiful and thoughtful.
I don't agree with you. This artist has no clue how to interpret the lyrics to the utmost impact. Again..he has a good voice but contrives the dynamics to be different just for that sake.

@@DramaSydETV watch the versions I mention if you want to open your mind to how it was originally sung and interpreted.
These are the artists a person such as myself, who grew up with and saw the opera in it's birth. Any changes are welcome to an extent. This guy's changes arent convincing as improvements, artistically nor thematically. Sorry...I'm a purist. Can't help it.

Each production of a stage show has its own merits and feel. I am not a fan of pitting one against the other. The people who are reacting to John Farnham, are giving their audiences a wide variety of genres to demonstrate his versatility and talent.

@@alimac1469 all I'm saying is ...if I was in the audience I would have to open my mind completely to a different rendition of this song...music included.( Im not a fan of the constant drum beat instead of an acoustic guitar to begin the song as it seems to get in the way of his dilemma).
