Not to take away from John's amazing performance, but please do yourself a favour and go to 'Jesus Christ Superstar Zone' on YT. Search 'Trevor White - Gethsemane (Original Australian Cast Live 1973)'.
It is a HQ live bootleg recording of the song.
Having seen JCS, as a very young lad, live at the Palais Theatre in Melbourne, l was left in awe of Trevor's stunning vocal range and his entire performance as JC.
      Footnote:
Some other performers from that show were...
Stevie Wright (ex Easybeats), John Paul Young (best know for 'Love is in the air'), Jon English (singer/songwriter, stage & TV performer), Marcia Hines, Doug Parkinson and Reg Livermore... among many others who either were, or later became, houshold names and music industry stars.
I seem to remember 2 of the chorus later forming to become the duo Air Supply... someone may correct me on that 🙃
      Cheers mate-ette 😁

There is nothing John Farnham can’t do . I saw this performance but never really realised just how good he was. I think because you just expected it from him because you grew up with him in your life, and he always brought it to every performance across his career. I’m an oldie now and feel guilty how much I took him for granted. He really is a superstar who is so very genuine in his talent. Love to him and his family during his recovery at this time ❤

Exactly this. I grew up loving him and I knew he was good, but recently I've "rediscovered" him after many many years, and I'm absolutely blown away just *how* good he is. It's actually ridiculous how spoiled we were to have him and we probably took him for granted for decades.

I have watched several artists perform this part over the years. John's performance has me holding my breath the whole way through. The anguish he portrays and the emotion he puts into it is just spine tingling. John is surely one of the best performers in the world. Not only can he sing like a dream but his acting skills are right up there as well. He has done a few other musical theatre and tv comedy productions over the years. He is a man who has it all. ❤
There is a performance of When the War is Over that he did in 2003 when he was 54 years old, that I think you will appreciate. His vocal range is still incredible ...

Agree wholeheartedly! Ironic isn’t it that critics in Australia thought this production was awful, & especially singled out John, and yet audiences loved it & flocked to the show & bought the CDs. John has always been underrated in this country. John’s vocals on this track is phenomenal!

    • @carolynh8866
      @carolynh8866 Год назад +15

@@divinemadness7119 Obviously those critics didn't know their elbows from their backsides..
Considering the shows were extended in each state several times to cover demand for ticket sales and the CD debuted in the music charts at number one and stayed at number one for 10 weeks. I would say they definately got that that wrong.
Sadly there was a few of critics in Aus who didn't rate Farnham. A legacy from his early days singing cutsie novelty songs and covers of other people's works. They didn't want to admit that they got it wrong and kept bashing him for years. None of the major record labels even wanted to produce his Whispering Jack album so his manager mortgaged his house to produce it himself.. it became and still is, (30+ years later), the highest ever selling Australian album at 24x platinum. We all love to laugh at the stupidity of those major record labels who dropped the ball on Australia's most highly awarded musician in history. Who cares about critics we all love him and hishis musical peers even voted him the best vocalist ever in australia.

He said he chose home life with his family rather than the grind of world touring and being away from home. Family life was happy place for him, and I think that happiness shows when he sings. When he's on stage and belting out the rock numbers, the message and protest songs, or the slower love ballads, you can see how in love he is with his fans. I'm UK, never been to any JF, or Little River Band, concert, and I have to tell you that in the nicest way possible I am green with envy. It was the first concert/stage show I'd ever seen and I was mesmerised, I couldn't take my eyes off the stage. We had to draw our seats out of a hat as the available seating was scattered throughout the theatre and I was lucky enough to be in a group of 4 that drew front row centre... some things stay with you for the rest of your life...

The first production was in 1972 and included Jon English RIP as Judas and a very young 16 year old from USA by the name of Marcia Hines who played Mary Magdeline. Other successful singers in the line up included John Paul Young and Stevie Wright RIP from a band called The Easybeats (check out the song called Evie parts I II and III).
Our second production in 1992, of which this clip was from, also had some other notable stars including Jon Stevens, who is the lead singer of the New Zealand band called Noiseworks, Kate Ceberano who has been a star for many years as a solo artist but previously in the band I’m Talking, Russell Morris, and Angry Anderson lead singer of Rose Tattoo.

I would have loved to have seen this 'arena spectacular'. John is absolutely amazing. Such an emotional performance. I must try and see the whole show as well. It is interesting that there was so much controversy when it first came out. The Catholic Church condemned it. A cinema somewhere in South America was burned to the ground & there were protests etc. To me it portays perfectly the anguish (especially this song & John's performance) that the characters especially Jesus went through at this particular traumatic time.

Please look more into John’s great music, even his early stuff and with “little river band” was awesome. Most vocalists would have blown their voices out early on when singing with so much power and grit, but John’s voice remained to even the end of his epic career, into his 70’s his voice was still there. Great reaction.

Yes, I absolutely love this musical. I saw this when the tour came to Brisbane, and it was absolutely stunning (I had seen the stage version of JC twice in the 70's).
I assume you've found the remastered video of the entire concert, and I thoroughly recommend it. The cast is stupendous, and Jon Stevens as Judas manages to upstage John Farnham repeatedly. Stay for the intros at the end and meet the cast and Tim Rice himself as he was in the audience. Enjoy! I'd love to know what you think. ❤

Evidence of what we are missing without Johnnie still singing for us. I'd have liked his performance to have been given more of the screen though. Seems like it was intended to be more about the critic than the performer.

John Farnham’s sons Rob and James have spoken about their father’s cancer battle, as the Australian music icon continues to recover from throat cancer following a devastating 2022 diagnosis.
The 75-year-old underwent 12-hour surgery after being diagnosed with throat cancer, with doctors removing a tumour from his mouth and reconstructing his jaw.
He has since received an “all clear” regarding the cancer.
The boys’ update comes ahead of their attendance at the Logies on Sunday on behalf of their father with the John Farnham: Finding The Voice documentary up for the Best Factual or Documentary Program award.
“He’s doing really well,” Rob said.
“Every day is another step forward, as it is for everyone with cancer. He’s just gotta keep moving forward and keeping positive, and you know, keep driving forward. That’s what it’s about.”
The boys went on to praise their mother, saying she had held the family together for the past two years, and also reflected on comments from global superstar Celine Dion, who paid tribute to Farnham in her own documentary I Am: Celine Dion, calling him one of the greatest singers of all time.

I saw the Australian stage production of JCS in I think 1972when I was about 10 years old. Trevor White was Jesus, Michele Fawdon was Mary Magdalene, Jon English was Judas - and he tended to steal the show - with some great songs - Trevor White was good very good - they all were just amazing - I mean I'm ten years old watching this in some theatre in Sydney - had the curved layered, stepped seating - the band blew my mind - real rock drummers, guitarists etc and some orchestration I think - It is for mine, Andrew Lloyd Webber's and Tim Rice's masterpiece - I mean - I can't stand things like Chess and Cats - I'm sorry - but I dig this. John Farnham always does the most amazing performances - he is a treasure beyond priceless -

If you are in two minds about watching the whole show.. How about do a reaction to "everything's alright" from the same show. It, of course features 2 of the other lead roles sung marvelously by Jon and Kate. I know you will love it. The Australian version of this amazing show has a real rock opera style. Much better than I other versions I've seen.

This is a little different to the last version of JCSS I saw! The school i went to was the first school that was licenced to do this play, back in about 1977, and it was pretty good. This production however, with its all star cast (I think Kate Cebrano sung Mary Magdalene?) Was by all accounts fire. But the last version i saw, well, it was different. It was more like Jesus Christ, Media Star. They all had phones on them, Judas was played by a woman, and she didnt hang herself, she OD'd on vodka and pills. There was a scene where Jesus was walking past a barrier, waving to his fans, like on a Hollywood red carpet. It was really modern, yet still good.
While you are exploring John, there was a show where he teamed up with Olivia Newton John and Anthony Warlow called The Main Event. He and Anthony did a cover of Granada which was so entertaining. A little comedy and great vocals.

I still have the CD of this Australia cast. This live version of Gethsemane is so much better than the studio version. Each time his "immediate" power is mentioned I compare him to Pink or Midler who take an eternity to finally reach the required note where John is there like a light switch.
