Brett Garsed originally joined John in 1986 when he recorded the album Whispering Jack. And continued to tour with John for years. He left Australia in the late 80's for 14 years and joined American band Nelson for a few years then recorded and toured as a duo with TJ Helmerick. He came back to Aus in 2000 and continued touring with Farnham and also released albums of his own. He is a guitar legend ❤

John, quite a bit older here, pores his heart out with this vocal masterpiece. John’s voice is epic, and his seemingly endless range resonates. The emotion and passion he puts into this is so so good and being able to still belt out like that is amazing. And Brett Garsed on guitar as always, awesome.

John's delivery of this song got better and better as he got older. Originally written by Steve Prestwich for Cold Chisel . When Cold Chisel broke up in 1982, Steve joined the Little River Band with John who was LRB's lead singer at the time. LRB recorded their version of the song. And John has continued to sing it at just about every concert he has had. Cold Chisel also continued to perform the song everytime they get back together. It's a beautiful song.

I was never a fan of The Beatles - they wrote some very good lyrics - but in my mind I saw them as a group of travelling musicians, moving from fair to fair, much as travelling troubadour did hundreds of years ago. But - BIG BUT! - JF's slow version of Help is astounding, heartfelt emotion in every (perfect) note. That's the first time I've truly appreciated a Beatles lyric - I'm so glad it's on youtube. 27.12.23. UK. E♥️

Cold Chisel wrote songs that went straight to the heart of regular Australians without ever being preachy or pompous. They were songs about life, love and hardships that everyone could identify with.
It's why the affection for them has never waned at all, and those songs still remain classics.

Regarding your compliment about the arrangement and piano chord progression, that’s all due to the wonderful Chong Lim, John’s long-time musical director. He also did a great job at their concert at the Sydney Opera House. He was also conducting the Sydney Symphony Orchestra from his piano. One-part refers to the fact that one musical idea is repeated throughout the song, and AAA is a more technical form of song structure analysis where sections of music are assigned letters, with different letters for different sections. AAA, clearly, is a situation where all sections use the same musical material. Another commonly used word for the form is strophic”. (The conversation, 2015).

When The War Is Over originally a Cold Chisel top 30 hit single from 1982 in Australia. Well Cold Chisel broke up in 1984 but this songs writer drummer the late Steve Prestwich joined Little River Band straight after .
John Farnham was the lead singer of LRB at that moment in time .
Like John Steve wouldn’t have had made any money out being a member of LRB , LRB was in financial trouble from high cost of touring the USA left only the songwriters got paid . So Steve offered up When The War Is Over to be re-recorded after it was added to their set list for the Playing To Win Tour .
LRB recorded it for their last album with John Farnham No Reins 1986 , No Reins was also Steven Prestwich last album with LRB both men left LRB before the album was released.
LRB’s former record company capital records only released When The War Is Over as single to cash in on John’s solo success with You’re The Voice .
John recorded it again in 1988 as solo artist after his recording company requested it to be a bonus track and b side for Age Of Reason era . John said about the rerecording that he felt he was happy to leave it with LRB and he was hesitant reluctant about re-recording it again .
But the recording company talked him around , John has said When The War Is Over is one of favourite songs .
The song did pop up on his set list on some of John’s tours.
Original Little River Band founding member Graham Goble regards When The War Is Over is LRB best song that wasn’t written by himself .

Yes, I agree. I find some of the reactions here a bit frustrating to watch, as the songs get interrupted right in the middle of the most passionate part, or right at the release after a buildup, to try to work out the piano chords. I get wanting to understand the piece of music, but I think it's possible to be more careful about where you choose to pause a song, or at least rewind it and re-listen to the bit that was interrupted so it flows a bit better. The result of not doing this makes some of these reactions feel a bit choppy and unsatisfying to watch.
When The War Is Over is a fantastic song, but if I'm watching a reaction to John Farnham, I at least want there to be some focus on the singing.

Thanks Nina , one of many favourite performances by John. You were so understandably focused on the arrangement, John's vocals seemed kind of lost on you. None the less , this song was a Cold Chisel song, an iconic Aussie band. Might I suggest again, Something is wrong with my baby, a duet between John and Jimmy Barnes (lead singer of Cold Chisel)

Great reaction as always Nina, I was surprised that there wasn’t more vocal analysis considering the sheer vocal epicness that was on display from Farnsey here, any chance you could concentrate on the vocals a bit more, particularly with John as he has such a unique voice I’d love to hear a more technical explanation of how he does what he does, thanks Nina.

You would be surprised at how much Australian talent is on that stage. Behind the guitarist on piano is Chong Lim and like the guitarist is one of our best. John is older here and Lisa, Venetta and Lyndsey his usual backup singers are not there. No one ever leaves him so I would like to know why. John just makes me smile and every now and then I think I can sing like John. Until I look at my husbands face. Our adopted beauty can sing like that and if I sing when she is here. She is saying, no Mumma, just no. Everyone’s a critic but I couldn’t hold a note to save myself. 😂 I love how you react to John. Thank you.

John and his band/back up singers are all brilliant. I think you will find that Lisa was in the audience with her new baby, Vanetta may have retired?. Lyndsay is there, to the right of the stage.

      @maltaylor9753 Год назад +2

I believe Venetta had retired before this performance. Lindsey was present, as has already been commented on.
Nina mentioned in her introduction that there was some talk before the song, which she was skipping. In that section, John introduces Lisa Edwards, who was in the audience with her new baby. As John said, it would be a bit difficult to sing and breast feed at the same time!

Great old chisels song. John just has this beautiful voice.
At one stage John's seemed to be over. It wasn't until he started singing these 'spiritual' songs that he suddenly was everyone's darling again.

Bear in mind this isn't a young john. He's in his 50's at this point. The 'seasoning' to his vocal and the long practiced technique should not be ignored. It stands testiment to all singers not to over exert and be careless, but to train and practice.

Chong Lim is once of the best arrangers of our time, and John Farnham’s voice is one of a kind. Put them together and they elevate each other. I am privileged to have seen them both together live many times. What you miss is the amazing stage presence and interaction with the audience which is second to none.

That's Chong Lim on piano/keys - our little Asian mate and genius and arranger. John has really good mic control. That's brett Garsed on guitar- he simply sent a tape of his playing to somebody and got the job - been with John since the 80s. One of Australia's finest and notice he plays in that Legato style wiyh all yhe notes running together. Lovely ( as I am a guitarist of 55 years playing). BTW you hnow your chops.

Brett Garsed on lead guitar is one of the best and highly underrated guitarist I’ve heard. John’s voice in this, even though quite a bit older is epic, powerful, endless range, passion and emotion is amazing. He’s the greatest performer ever, just there for the music, the love, his band members and his fans, always puts everything into every performance.

"When the war is over" was written by the late Steve Prestwich (who was the drummer in the Little River Band with John at one stage) written when he was in Cold Chisel. It is about the breakdown of Steve's marriage to his wife and how love can turn to 'war' during a relationship breakup, the reminiscing of the good times and having to "start again" once it is over and the sadness that follows. 'War' is used as a metaphor and the meaning of the song is often misconstrued.

I get very emotional listening to this song. We were just kids coming home from vietnam and the military, to find that we were not loved by the same person we loved before serving. Our hearts still loved them though and added more fuel to what we now know as PTSD. Many turned to drugs and alcohol to drowned their sorrow. Some committed suicide adding to the torture of surviving a questionable war. We still loved, even though our hearts were fractured.
