I just discovered your channel and am blown away. Thank you so much! I look forward to many hours of enjoyable study of your amazing, fantastic videos. You are very inspiring- you make it seem so logical and possible to make great music.
This brings me back to all of those times in church when I would go up to the piano player and say, "what was that you did there?"...inevitably they said, "I don't remember what you are talking about" or " I don't know man, I just did it". Years of studying would have been saved for me if I just had someone to take a moment and say, "sure man let me break these chords/movements down with you" This is substantial and points those learning in the right direction. Great stuff!
Hey David! I did exactly that growing up! Back then I had a portable mini disc player that I took everywhere with me. Nowadays it's my cell phone, but I'm always recording. I literally have at least a 1000 hours of recordings of musicians I admire!
Let's teach the young musicians to save up and pay these highly rehearsed musicians who took hours out of their lives to form their own style and flow of chords. Hand outs create ungrateful arrogant musicians a lot of the time.
I don’t get the tri tone sub ...do u build it from the chord your on or from the secondary dominant because then it become just going in from a half step above just like the first passing chord example
Hey Benny! Thanks for the question. The tri-tone substitution in this context is the Dominant 7th chord a tritone away from your current dominant chord, which is very different than the chromatic pass. For example, in a ii-V-I progression in C major, so Dminor7 - G7 - Cmajor7, if I wanted to create a tritone substitution for the G7, I would use the Db7 chord, which is a tritone (3 whole steps) away. But the key to remember is this, when I play the Db7, I can play any alteration, so that Db7 chord might actually be Db7(b9, b5, 13). But when I do the chromatic pass, my root might be Db, but my chord quality would be the exact same as my Cmaj7 chord. So for the chromatic pass, my Db chord would be Db-F-Ab-C which is a Dbmajor7 chord. But in the tritone substitution, even if I played a basic Db7 chord that would be (Db-F-Ab-B) which is not the same as the chromatic pass. However, I would almost always add alterations to it, so it might be Left Hand (Db-B) and Right Hand (D-G-Bb) which is a Db7(b9,b5,13). So although the root movement is the same, the chord quality is completely different. Hope this helps!
Corey, this is the best chord lesson I've found on RUclips. Not just passing chords but it's a great lesson for just understanding chord relationships in general.
Wow the way you sauce up all those transitions never ceases to amaze me. Several times I found myself pausing the video and and being relaxed at how well you settled it and how resolved you made it feel. Keep making vids man, coming from the youth.
I've been playing for many years and have never had someone explain passing chords in this way. This video will be a game changer for me. Thank you so much.
Hi, Corey: You are indeed a skilled musician! I appreciate your getting right to the point and SHOWING instead of merely promising. It is clear that you want your listeners to succeed, instead of merely watching you show off. Your explanations are clear and easily understandable. I really like your explaining note-for-note and chord-for-chord. You are an excellent teacher!

I won't even lie. As I committed more time to wanting to learn more complexities of this instrument, I've literally prayed for guidance, improvement, and annointing on this path. My most recent topic with a man much more skilled than I am on piano?: Passing chords. What appears on my suggested list? This video. I'm ecstatic. Bless you brother, keep sharing your gift. Awesome!
god you're so helpful honestly i just write jazz progressions by doing extensions, II-V-I resolutions, coltrane changes, and just random chords that have similar notes to previous chord i just played
I love it when you laugh at yourself and say uhh. taking pleasure in the special gift you have. I laugh when I hit a chord that rings my soul too. I call it God showing me his gift thru my hands
I watched this video like 7 months ago, got a little out of it and then forgot about it. Now I'm watching it again and now taking notes, this video is def helping me get past a plateau. Eye opening. You're the man!
I am so much thankful for these videos. I am from Africa, country Malawi, these videos are helping me a lot. may God richly bless you. continue giving us more
Thank you. I mean that sincerely. All I’ve ever known was 2-5-1... this provides endless approaches if you know what chord you’re going to. Much appreciated
You explained with perfect clarity the vague concepts that befuddled me as a budding musician! Without making it too convoluted at that! Thank you so much! Instasubbed
I've been looking for some kind of tutorial on exactly this for AGES man. Passing chords...and specifically, those mind-bending expanding diminished runs at the end. Diminished passing chords, like, ARE gospel music. They eluded me forever...I just didn't have a concept of them. But a few months ago I accidentally discovered the whole diminished-over-diminished thing that you describe at 7:27, where you play a diminished chord a whole-step up as extensions...and it opened a whole world up to me! Suddenly jazz dominants (and Herbie chords) made sense! As did all of gospel and R&B-style keys...and I also finally realized why the hell the diminished scales are so important: they each contain two complimentary diminished chords in one scale. Epiphanies, man! Anyway, I'm watching this is awe...you just changed my damn life with this. Ha, I'm woke to like, all this crazy dominant theory that I never understood before. I literally got goosebumps when you explained how the last "Corey Special Chords" work, how they're just II-V-II-V ad nauseam using diminished chords. I've heard those so many times in the past and kinda knew them as like, alternating diminished, but never knew why they worked. I can't believe it's so simple! Damn. This is the clearest, most useful tutorial on this style of playing that I've ever seen. You take these concepts that are potentially so complex and provide a miraculous clarity the likes of which I've never seen before. It's like, finally I get it! You're so relaxed, you're not showing off, and you're explaining everything so patiently and deliberately, with no fluff or pomp. You're not dumbing anything down in the least, but it's still super accessible. Going from the least to the most complex concepts in order like you did...it's just so perfectly paced and learnable, each one building off the last. Everything just clicks. I also find it very endearing that you end up just getting lost in a solo run at the end of your examples :) Good stuff!! I'mma pull up a nice piano library right now and learn along with you.
WOW! Thank you so much for checking out our video! I'm absolutely ecstatic that our video has been able to help you. WOW! And thank you for your kind words. They mean a lot!
Of course! Sorry about the lengthy diatribe, and thanks for reading it. I was really struck by this last night, obviously. I'm a sucker for chords, man. :) Thank you so much for putting your time and effort into these videos for us!
Like your previous commenter I too am blown away by what you offer your viewers. Based on your passing chord concepts I've just added some jazzy harmonic color to a song I'd been playing with only basic chords. WOW! Thank you! Count me among your disciples!
I've tried to get passing chords explained for so long. Stumbling into this site has put me in awe. Thank you Corey for sharing your knowledge, it's greatly appreciated.
Amazing! Although, this is a pretty higher level than actually I'm, however, I'll continue practicing. Thank you so much for the tutorial and greetings from Venezuela!

In this video, we explore 9 different passing chord concepts and how to apply them to exponentially improve your playing!
The tritone subs are great and I find they are especially useful when making them a dominant flat five. So rather than a straight C#7 in your first example, a C#7 b5 actually adds yet another tritone to the tritone sub!
Back for more of my favorite YT piano instructor.. The lessons are not only high quality content but the delivery method is super user friendly. That backdoor progression is it!!?!Many thx again brother ! !
Thanks SittingBull! Yes the backdoor progression is one of my favorites! Funny story - when I upladed this video, part of the Backdoor Progression section was mysteriously cut out, including the best parts. I was going to re-upload it, but the hard drive it was made on died. I might re-record a video going into more depth...lol.
I already play some of this but you broke it down and where to use it. You have such a beautiful sprit and a God given gift! I will take this time since we are dealing with this coronavirus to become a better player!! Continue your work for the Lord I have learned so much just on this Vid alone!!
Hey just wanted to let ya know, I found this video back when you first posted in and since then, practicing this has made my playing so much more interesting and has been the most influential video on RUclips to my playing. Thank you so much!
It is a software program called Chordie by a guy on RUclips named Matkat Music. Here are my affiliate links to the software in case you want to purchase it - (For Windows) gumroad.com/a/612676723/ZBQGv or (For Mac) gumroad.com/a/612676723/lmSkV
It is a software program called Chordie by a guy on RUclips named Matkat Music. (Actually, I think its full name is The Chordie App) Check him out on RUclips as he puts out a lot of great material!
Lately I've been thinking about jazz dominants as functions of extended diminished chords, and so the tritone sub is the bass just going down two notes in a diminished chord!
Just stumbled upon your channel and I'm stuck! This is a breath of fresh air for me, being largely sef taught and in need of proper guidance to become a much better piano player. God bless you sir...
Well there is no such thing as an "easy" key, just ones that are unfamiliar. You definitely want it to be that every key is familiar. And you don't want be stuck only knowing C, D, E, F, and G. Learn all 12 keys. I actually try to make videos in a wide variety of keys to encourage musicians to learn all 12 keys.
sorry but maybe a key that most of us know a little bit more than bf? im sure that most of those who play piano isnt yet so comfortable on playing in those hard keys. Still a good video bro :) just giving my feedback :)
Clear and concise! I had a vague understanding of what passing chords are before arriving at this video, and now, that door has been kicked open for me. Very excited, as well as inspired to start creating using these concepts. Thank you for sharing this content with the world Corey!!
fantastic skills for Pop and Jazz - very helpful and wonderfully broken down by a true musician who truly wants to enlighten and help other musicians - love it ! THANK YOU !
All musicians should know... LOL! I’d be glad to find most musicians knowing what a 1,4,5 is these days. Thanks for the good stuff here. It’s always good to get a refresher and you’re good.
After having played guitar for a number of years and growing disillusioned with the ceiling I was reaching in terms of exploring advanced harmonic and theoretical concepts on the instrument, I sat down at the Casio CDP-120 collecting dust in the corner of my basement jam space and plunked down a middle C. It's been a few weeks of tinkering and memorizing basic minor and major chords, putting them together using the circle, and adding some basic extensions to make them sound a little more full, but I think stumbling upon your video here, I've hit some sore of gold mine. It's going to be awhile until I can vamp on complex changes with seemingly limitless splashes of musical color like I see you do here, but it's more a star to steer by than a goal right now. You have a gift of breaking down difficult concepts and making them approachable even to a beginner like myself. Thanks for the inspiration!
A whole months worth of concepts to explore. I also had to laugh when at the end of covering a device you would get swept up in the moment and have to complete a musical idea! Love it
I will most definitely pull together the funding for these "universe secrets"...Ha! "Thanks so very much" for the work you put in to setting up these lessons. We all have become your children!
Your presentation is GREAT. You show us the score, the notes, and your fingering. What a fanastic lesson. As a Tnr player I HEAR the voicings but could never work out how you guys in the Rhythm Section were doing it. This is a big help not only for playing, but for arranging as well. Thank you.
GREETINGS SKILED MUSICIAN MY NAME IS CHARLES HOPKINS AND I'M JUST STARTING TO LEARN TO PLAY TODAY. I'M TRULY ENJOYING LISTENING TO YOUR MUSICAL TECHNIQUES.
Fantastic video. Works at multiple levels. Intermediate players will benefit from the basics and advanced players will get all the extensions. Clear as a bell. Like your big brother telling you how to deal with entering High School. Congrats on great work.
Your the man! Lol I can tell the piano is so much fun for you that while your teaching your actually getting distracted by the different chords you can make. Super cool. Thank you.
That is absolutely correct! I plan out the general framework for these videos, but I don't actual play through all the ideas. So oftentimes I'm playing these chords for the first time, and they definitely grab my attention and I sometimes forget that I'm recording a video... LOL! Thanks for watching!
I watch a lot of lesson videos on RUclips... You are among the absolute best teachers, and you're a killer musician. You always seem to fill in the knowledge gaps that I'm missing. Cheers
I've also been blown away with these Gospel player videos. They tend to view altered chords in terms of progressions that are common to that genre. Also the movement in the bass is emphasized IMO.. You see chord notations with a designated bass note (i.e., gma/A) . I'm primarily a guitar player but I'm striving to learn piano. So these videos gives a different insight to stuff I've played for decades.
Hey Sydelle! I've spent some time trying to recognize and name chords as quickly as possible. The key is just understanding exactly what you are playing. I really appreciate you checking out our channel.
Skilled Musician I'm not so sure how to forward things to you.. its Change Me by Tamela Mann.. there's a live performance of it on RUclips.. the piano solo on the first verse really blew me away... I'd really love to play that song... I could let you hear a demo of an original song that I did for my group at church so you could what level of playing I'm at... but I'm not very tech savvy.. maybe you could tell me how I could share it with you...
Can you reach out to me at skilledmusician.com/contact and maybe put the link to the particular RUclips video you are referencing? That way we can talk directly through email. I believe I have the perfect solution to help you, but I don't want to make it public yet.
When I learned about the tritone substitution I was taught it worked because they belong to the same diminished family. i.e., an F7 with a b9 can also be thought of as an F# Diminished Seventh with an F in the bass. The tritone substitution of B7 is the same chord with the bass note moved to B. Using this theory there are two more possible substitutions for an F7, the D7 and.... the Ab7. I never heard a good use for one of these other substitutions until hearing your "Backdoor Approach" technique! Such a great sound. The Ebm6 already wants to resolve to the root as a minor plagal cadence. Throwing in that extra Ab7 = pure bliss. So cool!
Thanks Connor! I'm glad we were able to help give you some new ideas! I definitely learned that very same idea - dominant chords belonging to the same "diminished family". Great concept!
Man WTF. Estoy impresionado. He visto cientos de videos y ninguno es como el tuyo, la forma tan práctica y sencilla en la que explicas y enseñas es magnífica. De verdad quiero agradecerte porque tan solo con un video aprendí mucho. God bless you, and very thank you.
Corey!!! This is blessing me man. Switched to keys for the past year. And learned more in the past 30 mins than I have in a lifetime!! Keep up the good work bro!!
ROD!!!!!!!! I didn't know you were playing keys like that! Man I'm so glad the videos could help. Definitely check out some of our first ones as well, especially the 15 Gospel Piano Endings, 6 Chordal Moves, and 12 Left-Hand Voicings (part 1 & 2) as well as the 20 Piano Hacks (part 1 & 2) as I believe those will be really helpful for you.
Skilled Musician Yeah man... always wanted to, found a nice church, now md but i play by ear, never had a "course". Tracking in reason and ableton for services frees me up a bit but this is giving me the whys behind the what's and is opening me up to a lot of new stuff #TheFoundationINeeded. So best believe I'm gonna check those out No doubt!! ✊✊
The only thing I can imagine (if possible) is maybe the different approach/perspective that a pianist would have vs. an organist. The chord voicing sounds a little different and there seems to be a theory behind the tension and movements
I just discovered your channel and am blown away. Thank you so much! I look forward to many hours of enjoyable study of your amazing, fantastic videos. You are very inspiring- you make it seem so logical and possible to make great music.

Yes sir I remember those days as well. Let's change the paradigm and help each other! Thank you so much for watching!
Same exact thing happened to me! And I actually could play classically! Took years even before someone told me to "listen to the bass"
I would always RECORD those sessions. I could then go back later and figure out the chords he was playing!

I might re-record a video going into more depth...lol.
man! this channel is the best, thanks Mr
Thank you so much!
gospel players teaches you and then halfway go into their own world and start playing something else..then they'll snap out of it and laugh
Sorry about that!
@@SkilledMusician Hehe, we love u, brother!
I paused a lot to interpret. Helped a lot. Nice to see ultimate translation to practice progressively but quickly!
@BrandynMakes I’m so glad that this video helped!
Thanks for the efforts.
You are welcome! Thanks for watching!
Esoteric , arcane and recondite - I love it ! Seriously , this is one of the best instructional videos I have seen .
Thanks Michael! I really appreciate it!
I love not only your playing but how simply you break down what you’re doing. Thanks and you’re very encouraging as well.
Thanks Timothy! I really appreciate the kind words!
amazing lesson, thank you Corey!
Thank you ArgoBeats!
are you from slipknot??
No, sorry.
XD
Come on that’s a silly question. He’s not going to admit to it. That’s why they wear masks they’re all awesome gospel musicians on their free time
i was about to ask the same queation.lol
For God's sake, someone had to say it!
Great content and positive attitude. New subscriber here!
Wow thank you so much!
I already play some of this but you broke it down and where to use it. You have such a beautiful sprit and a God given gift! I will take this time since we are dealing with this coronavirus to become a better player!! Continue your work for the Lord I have learned so much just on this Vid alone!!
Thank you so much Reno! Yes sir, definitely use this time to improve your skills!
Hey just wanted to let ya know, I found this video back when you first posted in and since then, practicing this has made my playing so much more interesting and has been the most influential video on RUclips to my playing. Thank you so much!
Wow thank you so much Patrick! That means a lot!
What software are you using to display the chord names?
It is a software program called Chordie by a guy on RUclips named Matkat Music. Here are my affiliate links to the software in case you want to purchase it - (For Windows) gumroad.com/a/612676723/ZBQGv or (For Mac) gumroad.com/a/612676723/lmSkV
Hey bro what software do you use for the midi keyboard ?
It is a software program called Chordie by a guy on RUclips named Matkat Music. (Actually, I think its full name is The Chordie App) Check him out on RUclips as he puts out a lot of great material!
Thank you brother 🙏🏽
So the Tritone sub is essentially the semitone passing from above?
Exactly! Just make sure the chord quality is dominant.
Lately I've been thinking about jazz dominants as functions of extended diminished chords, and so the tritone sub is the bass just going down two notes in a diminished chord!
I can’t figure Tritones out, either, Theyre speaking Greek
Ive had this video in my watch later for years and I STILL come back to it! Great content!!!
Wow, thanks!
Just stumbled upon your channel and I'm stuck! This is a breath of fresh air for me, being largely sef taught and in need of proper guidance to become a much better piano player. God bless you sir...
Thanks Gabriel! I'm so glad you found us! Welcome to the community!
Hey can you please next time use a easier key such like major keys: C, D, E etc. thank you! nice vid!!
Bro I really appreciate you sharing, and I will definitely keep you in mind! Thank you for being part of the community!
No problem! will support you always!
Yeah. Awesome video. I'll learn this on B, though I'd prefer the key C.
Clear and concise! I had a vague understanding of what passing chords are before arriving at this video, and now, that door has been kicked open for me. Very excited, as well as inspired to start creating using these concepts. Thank you for sharing this content with the world Corey!!
I'm so glad it was helpful for you! Be Blessed and Happy Practicing!
the last set of passing chords was just my speed. Beautiful and Brillant.
Thank you 🙏
fantastic skills for Pop and Jazz - very helpful and wonderfully broken down by a true musician who truly wants to enlighten and help other musicians - love it ! THANK YOU !
You are welcome! And thank you for being part of our community!
I've been searching for this video for 8 months since the first time it showed up in my recommended... Thank you 'recommended' !
Wow Sam! Thank you so much!
THANK YOU !!!!! you've shown me how to add lotsa interest to my playing. ( & you're NOT a show-off)
Thank you so much!
All musicians should know... LOL! I’d be glad to find most musicians knowing what a 1,4,5 is these days.
Thanks for the good stuff here. It’s always good to get a refresher and you’re good.
Thank you so much Danny!
This video is the best example of someone applying these playing tools in a digestible way. I'm inspired by your mentorship! Thank you so much!!
You are welcome! Thank you for watching!
You are welcome! Thank you so much for your kind words! I look forward to hearing more about your musical growth! Welcome to the community!
I got chills around the 23 minute mark. :) Thanks for the video.
You are most welcome! Thank you for watching!
A whole months worth of concepts to explore. I also had to laugh when at the end of covering a device you would get swept up in the moment and have to complete a musical idea! Love it
Thanks Darrell! Playing this stuff is always a lot of fun!
I will most definitely pull together the funding for these "universe secrets"...Ha! "Thanks so very much" for the work you put in to setting up these lessons. We all have become your children!
Thank you so much Jim!
You simply the best! 10 minutes into this & I am wondering where you been all along. You good man. Respect!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!
This video is absolutely amazing! Even as a guitar player, a million possibilities (and a lot more hours of practice) have just opened up. Thank you!
Wow thanks Ethan! I am so glad to hear the video is able to help. Welcome to the community!
How many instruments do u play?
@@signetulupan I can play around 7 or so but am really only good on guitar, piano, bass
Wow! Thanks Corey!
You are welcome! Thank YOU for checking us out. We really appreciate it!
Your presentation is GREAT. You show us the score, the notes, and your fingering. What a fanastic lesson. As a Tnr player I HEAR the voicings but could never work out how you guys in the Rhythm Section were doing it. This is a big help not only for playing, but for arranging as well. Thank you.
Hi Deryck! I'm so glad we've been able to help! Thank you so much for watching!
Big "merci" from France !
Very clear explanation and progressive learning rythm. And the white backfront add to the easy comprehension.
Thank you Sujet! I'm so glad you found this video helpful!
I was just going over some of these concepts with my guitar teacher last night. Thanks for reinforcing the lesson!
Cool deal!
I'm just blown away how informative and simple these videos are. Just what I needed for quarantine!
Thanks Shvngdu! Be Blessed and Happy Practicing!
Bro you deserved more subscribers, you dont care about views duration, you always get straight to the point! Thank you
Thanks ZelPro!
I could honestly just listen to you chatting and tickling keys for hours. Great feel and the voicings are out of this world =D
Thank you so much Haig!
GREETINGS SKILED MUSICIAN MY NAME IS CHARLES HOPKINS AND I'M JUST STARTING TO LEARN TO PLAY TODAY. I'M TRULY ENJOYING LISTENING TO YOUR MUSICAL TECHNIQUES.
Thank you so much Charles. I'm glad you are enjoying our channel!
Such a straight forward explanation for such a complicated topic. Thank you for the clarification. Your voicings are beautiful.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate your kind words!
You're an inspiration.
And your enthusiasm for what you do is priceless.
Thanks, Corey.
Hey Nathan! Thank you so much for the kind words and THANK YOU so much for supporting us! Be Blessed and Happy Practicing!
Fantastic video. Works at multiple levels. Intermediate players will benefit from the basics and advanced players will get all the extensions. Clear as a bell. Like your big brother telling you how to deal with entering High School. Congrats on great work.
Thank you so much! You've got it!
THANK YOU Corey.... your love of music is the wind beneath my wings.... blessings
Thanks bingo!
Thats really a fine tutorial for digging into it for hours to understand and practice those movements. Thanks a lot
Glad it was helpful!
Bless you. This was so, so useful. Maybe the single most useful few minutes of instruction I've ever had.
Thank you so much Robert! That means a lot!
After hearing a minute, I immediately purchased this!!
I appreciate you!
I watch a lot of lesson videos on RUclips... You are among the absolute best teachers, and you're a killer musician. You always seem to fill in the knowledge gaps that I'm missing. Cheers
Wow thanks Chris! I really appreciate it!
You are making the world a better place to live in. thx
Wow thank you so much!
Very nice nuggets you gave us. Stuff I can use at church on Sunday mornings when this virus mess is over!!
Thanks Reno! I would love to hear how you utilize these ideas!
I’m so glad this video is helping you on your musical journey!
The way you name each chord so precisely... Woah!!!
It's automatic, using a vst.
@@nuclear5744
The way he knew them when he said them loud... Can he see the names or anything? According to what you said
Hey Sydelle! I've spent some time trying to recognize and name chords as quickly as possible. The key is just understanding exactly what you are playing. I really appreciate you checking out our channel.

Thanks for the reply!!!
Your channel is great. Keep going !!!
As always, very inspring. My playing has changed a lot already by watching, listening and studying your video’s. Please keep them coming!!
Theo you've been a great supporter. Thank you so much!
Was looking to learn gospel, and found the right channel. You’re amazing man. Thank you so much, from one music teacher to another. Much love!
Thank you Mr. DeHart! I'm so glad you found us! Be Blessed and Happy Practicing!
Great video! I really like how you broke the concept down in a simple form and then put it back in context.
Thank you so much!
can't believe I'm just discovering this channel.. God bless you man.. spread the love
Thanks Heron! Welcome to the community!
Skilled Musician
there's a song that really touch my heart that I would love your help with...
hope to hear from you soon
Hey Heron! How can I help?
Skilled Musician
I'm not so sure how to forward things to you..
its Change Me by Tamela Mann.. there's a live performance of it on RUclips.. the piano solo on the first verse really blew me away...
Absolutely one of the best piano teachers on RUclips!
Wow, I really appreciate that!
Me alegro escuchar que le gusta. Bienvenido a nuestro communidad!
Brotherman, You packed a whole lot of info in there. Thank GOD for you. I just subscribed. Stay Blessed.
Thank you so much! Welcome to the community!
You're an amazing teacher! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us :)
Thank you so much! It's my pleasure to share!
So glad the videos are helping! Are there any topics you would like to see us cover?
The only thing I can imagine (if possible) is maybe the different approach/perspective that a pianist would have vs. an organist. The chord voicing sounds a little different and there seems to be a theory behind the tension and movements
