Hello Sir. So good... I hear your passion for instruction. Gift from God. I'm a straight chord (3 note) guy playing melody with right hand. Mostly old Baptist hymns. But now I attend a predominantly black church and head many guys playing thesd progressions effortlessly.. like they were born with a progression instinct. So.. I want to learn. Thats for helping me in the journey to learn something new, and add to my style of playing. Grateful for theory thoughts.

I think that is a great suggestion. I do have two ideas to help you with transposing. 1) Learn your major scales and primary chords (1, 4, and 5) in every key. 2) Whatever songs you have to learn, learn them in the original key. So if you have to learn a song for Sunday morning, learn it in the original key. Do not transpose. This will help you learn every other key...

Could you help me out, I'd like to get into listening to gospel music, but I'm not quite sure where to start? Really nice stuff!

This is a big question. Gospel Music is so vast and there are so many places that you can start, but I will try to give you a few ideas. (This is not an exhaustive list). TRADITIONAL GOSPEL- Thomas Dorsey, Mahalia Jackson; Shirley Ceasar; James Cleveland. TRADITIONAL CHOIR MUSIC: Mississippi Mass Choir. QUARTET: The Canton Spirituals; The Williams Brothers. FOUNDATION OF MODERN GOSPEL: Thomas Whitfield. MEN's GROUPS: Commissioned; Men of Standard. ARTISTS: Kirk Franklin, Yolanda Adams, Fred Hammond, Marvin Sapp, John P Kee, Donald Lawrence. Ok this should be a good start... Let me know if you need anthing else.

@@SkilledMusician man this is really good, thank you so much.. I might be shooting into the dark but I feel like Gospel and Blues is very important for someone like me, who's trying to figure out the roots of Jazz music.

whats the best way to learn chords. im just starting out, and the only thing i hear people say is “just keep playing them over and over”. is there a better way or some type of exercise?

There are many different ways. I would need to know what you already know. But in general, I would say start with Triads, then 4 note chords...

@@SkilledMusician just starting out. I know how to make a triad/7th chord, but im having trouble remembering them by heart. I cant just play a chord, i have think about it and then form it. Just trying to find the best a different way to practice them instead of keep playing them over and over.

@melvinbrookins6313 I understand. First start by working on one chord. Just make sure you can consistently get your fingers on all of the notes perfectly. Then add a metronome and see if you can play it in time. Practice different rhythms. Then try playing it within a series of other chords you know, with the metronome. And lastly, try playing it in a song, with the metronome. This will help you integrate the chords so that you know them in your hands, ears, and head, instead of trying to remember them. Let me know how it goes.
