Been doing this all year, gone through major, major 7ths, diminished, and half dim. Currently on dominants, I can confirm it is absolutely important to go through it, unconsciously I do in my playing. It has really helped a lot
@@KCOOKSMUSIC honestly didn't put a time frame to it, our muscle memory differs, how we learn differs, experiences differ, I took each key per day and just grind on it, the main point is self belief, cos it was really hard initially. Playing drop voicings also helps with rootless style of playing
Sean’s thought process is scary, he is so intentional and doesn’t touch a key or make a move for no reason. What a brain. Hard to emulate if you are not patient. I call it the Sean Wilson Piano way. And remember there is only one Sean. Sensei
This is the best explanation I have ever seen of this seemingly mystical technique. I will definitely be practicing these. I think practicing them within the context of a key, or progression will help immensely too in helping to see how you transition between these kinds of voicings in a song.
Man listen, I've seen a lot of drop two videos and none of them have left me as informed as yours! I not only just learned how they work, but how to form my own!! Thank you sooo much sir!!!
I appreciate you sharing your learning struggle because I have to watch most gospel tutorials with the undersranding that I'm mainly priming my subcinscious mind with a nebulous concept. The nebulous concept in this video us that there is something called a "drop 2" that must be understood without explanation.
The systematic approach or the correct order to practice going from bottom of complexity to a higher level is so important that i think many times musicians fail in that aspect because its a lot of information to master, saludos
Something that helped me is to think of the chord in two groups: root and 5th, and 3rd and 7th. You always have one of those in the left hand and the other on the right. When you go up and down you change to the other group in each hand. This also translates perfectly when you start doing the drop 2-4 voicings.
Great lesson on these drop 2 chords, they are beautiful. These are super useful in other styles too. If you have a large left hand you can play these with the left hand only and walk stride piano chords (one chord per beat in 4/4) using them going to the next closest inversion with the left hand only opening up your right hand for soloing, more harmony or anything. Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson did this and it's a big sound. Keep up the great videos.
Your videos… even your demeanor and calm way are such blessings in my life. Thank you for your teaching. You’re making my life so much happier with these lessons.
I've been including drop 2 chords in my pieces now for almost two years but I've had to painfully practice the phrases because I haven't been able to "see" the chords and put my hands on them instantly the way I can with closed voicings. These suggestions started to work for me the first hour I tried it. And if you distribute the chords with two notes on each hand, for some reason the pattern is easier to see. Thanks.
I’m just going through the major 7th drop 2 voicings and I keep forgetting to breath for some reason. This is a workout bro💪🏽Thanks for creating this video!
I just learned these about a year ago and I thought I was the only person dividing each chord by 2 notes in each hand... now I don’t feel like a misfit 😆 #thanks for the vid bro ✊🏾🎹😷
if anybody thinks in intervals, I find that the pattern "p4 in left, p4 in both, p5 in left, p5 in both." is helpful for learning the inversions of the major and minor 7ths. I also noticed when inverting the chords up the piano, the left hand interval of one chord will appear in right hand of the next chord. Vice versa when going downward. Can be a good reminder when you get stuck
This is an amazing lesson. I saw it three times already. Can you make another video maybe gettin a little more into the application ? on another song, maybe.
this is very helpful. probably one of the most essential exercises I've come across Im curious what other exercises people are relying on at the intermediate level. let me know what y'all think
Great! Thank you! I have a question. 03:51 f# - b - d - g drop 2. What about this configuration: f# - d - b - g (widest position)? Is this drop 2 chord too?
Now that I’m going through it, it’s changing my outlook and all I can see drop 2 chords as are inversions with the “perceived” 3rd raised an octave. If you practice your inversions then drop 2 should be easy coming from inversions. just take the 2nd interval out and raise it an octave. Idk if you ended up saying that in the video, I started the drill as soon as you broke it down
I am a member of SWP and began practicing this whole thing in 12 keys in 2020, inconsistently. 16 drop 2’s in 12 keys. I began by practicing a few minutes before going to work. I can tell you that I found the whole thing absolutely excruciating. I did persist somewhat though albeit inconsistently. In between practicing other things, I still gave these some attention though not much. I have in the last couple of days decided to see this through until the end of the year God willing. I look for patterns and things to help me retain the chords under my fingers. I am big on INTERVALS as they remain the same for each of the 12 keys. I look for ‘hooks’ to help me envision the chords almost instantly. If you can come up with ways and means such as these to help you, use them. They really do help. Sometimes I have practiced just the one chord through 12 keys, be it a major, minor, half-diminished or diminished drop 2. I mix it up a little. Having going back to practicing it like Sean does, I have seen tremendous improvement with practicing these drop 2’s. It’s been encouraging. ‘Excruciating’ has been replaced with genuine enjoyment! Granted, I am not as fast as Sean yet, but I can see the clear progress. 16 drop 2’s, 12 keys and genuine delight. Never, ever give up fellow pianists and keyboardists.
Sean! This is really good. Like seriously thank you. Btw, I’m almost certain these are the chords in Radiohead’s Idioteque, which is really a sample of some classical composer I’m pretty sure. It’s in Eb I think.
I’m a long time pro. Never really played gospel though I love it Left hand bass is my strength Drop 2 , I first heard of in the big band context . I like your suggestion to switch from left hand bass and go with drop 2. Are you aware of Barry Harris ? His diminished 6th is really nice
Great video! I was wondering about the dominants excercise. Do you include melodic minor in that excercise or you keep that for another routine? Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us!
When I started learning these I was using two fingers in each hand like yourself but I’ve seen so many do 3 fingers in the right hand and only 1 in the left. Is there an advantage to either method or would I be good learning both
For the minor 7, half dim and dim, you can move from inversion to inversion by putting a dim chord in between. What would you put in between major 7th inversions? A dim chord sounds strange.
Well, I wouldn’t put anything between them. The purpose of this exercise isn’t voice leading. It’s memorizing Drop 2 inversions. *however, dim chords can be used in between and many top gospel musicians use it exactly that way
Sick video! Can anyone explain what's happening in the intro around 0:26? I see that he goes from Db diminished and eventually lands on D major, but what are all the chords in between?
Hey guys what yall prefer 1 note in the LH and 3notes In the RH or 2/2 split 🤔 I started with the former but I guess it's down to preference but question to Sean? Wud the 2/2 approach have any benefits in ur opinion
The benefit of using the 2/2 approach is that it teaches the left hand to use perfect fourths, tritones, and perfect fifths. It's actually pretty cool once you get the pattern. *Also, playing 1 note in the left-hand is a crutch that musicians need to break away from, in my opinion
Why is the drop 2 taking the G which is the 3rd note of the major 7 chord instead of doing the E note which the 2 note of the chords? This is good but can you explain why you chose G and not E? Thank you much.
Been doing this all year, gone through major, major 7ths, diminished, and half dim. Currently on dominants, I can confirm it is absolutely important to go through it, unconsciously I do in my playing. It has really helped a lot
