    Have you ever wondered WHY inhale screaming/harsh vocals are considered UNSAFE to do? What if that's your primary harsh vocal technique? Is there a way to get the sound you want safely? In today's tutorial I talk about the specific reasons to avoid inhale screaming and what style of harsh vocals to try instead (to sound EXACTLY the same - possibly better!)

    I remember ages ago I watched a video from some kid who was doing tutorials on how to inhale scream (think he called it pig squealing tho). He was talking about the potential dangers too, and and he lifted up his shirt to show one. Apparently heavy prolonged inhaled screaming left him with this really noticable pit/indent right under his ribcage right where his diaphragm would be. Like, that's just his new normal now. Just walkin around with a big hole in his chest. Dunno if he was faking it or not, but it didn't look healthy.

      It’s weird because you can easily get the overtones that you get from inhaling by just using different vowels while exhaling while using vocal fry’s, false chord screams, and other kinds of techniques. The only reason I could see any sense in using inhales would be in between exhales if you wanted to maintain dynamics in a really fast paced song

      @@christiannovotny960 Right? Maybe people who can naturally exhale fry just don't take the time to properly learn inhale. Especially after a good warm up it can open a powerful low growel up to a screeching high pitch. Recently I've learned to do Chester Bennington style semi-fry singing by drinking lots of ginger and throatcoat tea (room temperature). I think it inflates the thyroid muscles on a safe level which conditions them into natural fry screaming. Give it a go and see if it works for you too!

      I've begun doing inhales in 2000. It was easier and safer for me in the beginning (for me, not a rule!). Although I never had any real issue with my voice, all minor problems I faced in these 20 years were always in clean singing, or exhale screaming.
      There is s
      A technique that I discovered recently that uses inhale fry to help the vocal chords to recover from various exhale drives and screaming techniques. It is used by phonoaudiologists and vocal coaches specialized in vocal drives and such. So I found very interesting this point of view, specially because I respect and admire Mary Z a lot.
      But I really find hard to believe, in terms of both vocal anatomy and personal experience, that inhales have any more dangers that exhales. People often sell them as an easy and damage free technique, and that's the mistake, imho. You still must have proper technique, breath support, etc.
      You can damage your voice seriously even with loud speaking and clean singing, and it seems to be proportionally much more common than with inhale screaming.

  • @PBRatLord

    One of my friends taught me how to do an inhale scream like a pig squeal when I was younger, and I've loved making all sorts of sounds using inhale scream to both sing as well as make all kind of monster noises for DnD sessions, animated series, dub-lines and the like.
    Been doing it for over a decade, but has almost always been while using a microphone, never bled from it either.
    I have a lot o lung capacity though, idk if that matters, but my 6'8" ass used to overblow a bari sax like it was nothing, so it doesn't exactly take much effort to produce cool efffects with my voice, especially when boosted and further modified by audio equipment.
    But of course, if anyone at home feels discomfort in the slightest from producing this effect, definitely don't assume that you won't be spared any potential consequences as I have! As she says, stay safe and protect your voice!

    @VoiceHacks Hi there, super interesting video. So I have done inhale screaming on and off for fun for about 5 months and the one thing I noticed is that one cannot and must not compress the trachea the same way you do with a scream because this is what really messes you up. Interestingly, the most relaxed inhale screams where I focus on echoing the sound right below my diaphragm are the loudest and gravest sounds I make without feeling that I am taxing my throat. If this is combined with leveling the sound vibrations through the nose and the gut, it feels to me that it balances relatively well. I think my point is that the real danger is attempting an inhale scream the same exact way you would do an exhale scream.

    Cover Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb without inhale screaming. Yeah not possible. Its literally in Another brick in the wall, comfortably numb and almost every song on the album The Final Cut. Cover anything by Pink Floyd with Roger Waters signature scream and you just won't hit it correctly.
    I think you are right in the danger aspect but thats how he did it. I imagine this is why Roger's voice is harsh now. But you will not match Roger's inhale scream especially the one from Comfortably Numb since the scream actually makes 2 different descending notes.
    I can fry scream and scream to the exact tone as Layne Staley in Man in the Box, I can actually hit the way he screamed Jesus Christ. I have done other screams to accent songs and even covered a few Metallica songs so my scream range is fairly decent. I cannot ever match Roger Waters with fry screaming, even raising it above the vocal chords to behind the nose (yes I can do this and it is really weird sounding but you can mimic Axl Rose with it without damaging your voice because its resonating behind the nose) and even then I cannot match it. It is just really that unique and I challenge anyone to do it without doing it the way he did it.

    • @voicehacks
      @voicehacks  3 года назад

      I hate to say this but if you’re matching sung pitches I don’t think you are inhale “screaming” (none of the songs or artists above involve inhale screaming) and I think you might be talking about something else entirely.

I've been doing random sounds with my mouth to annoy my EX girlfriend, I've called these sounds "Pterodactyl Screech" and I've transformed them into Inhale screams with most likely my own and unique technique that doesn't hurt/irritate or doesn't effect my throat in any way. Highs sounds like "Tea Kettle" screams or as I called it "Pterodactyl Screech" and my lows sound really like Gutteral screams, almost like Alex Terrible. Highs are nice but I must work more on my lows. Mids are also ok. My idea with inhales was to also have distortion when I breath in, so there'd be no pause in screaming and I can do a line completely fluent but I learned, it's stupid to completely inhale before a complex line. I remember in like 2008-2012 or so when it seemed like everyone thought lows were false chord mids were dry and highs were inhale. Exclusively. Like a high is automatically inhales. But they never were or maybe they were and people stopped doing it. I can’t “scream” but I can create distortion and play with the fry and false chord mechanisms to kinda scream. Relaxing my throat using my diaphragm but I’m not a vocalist just kinda trying it a little. But inhales have never ever made sense to me. Like ok a fry mid or low. Yea makes sense. Fry plus diaphragm pressure and control. Scream. Inhale? I have zero idea how it works. Like I could kinda mimick false and fry exhales before I learned the basics of how it works. Inhales, there’s no way.

    Lol I truly wish someone could show me how to exhale scream properly, I tried to learn for two whole years a while back and got nowhere, which was extremely disappointing, but I'm a natural inhale screamer. I never had an issue with inhale screaming, accidentally did it one day and I've just been able to do it. I just have to very carefully remember how to control my breaths. Meanwhile for fry screaming, I can do a vocal fry, but can't even get close to passing out air enough for it to sound even remotely close to the strength of my inhales. I feel like what people imagine inhales to sound like, I have with my exhales, and what people imagine exhales to sound like, I can do with an inhale. 😩

While I haven't yet figured out how to fry scream, a video I was watching last night helped me to realize that I had been trying to make the scream happen far too low. • @regdenee

    I'm pretty much always in the minority when it comes to the discussion of Inhale screaming. For me personally I think it sounds pretty cool and creates very inhuman sounding screams that lacks the character of the normal voice. It works very well for an effect in some songs and in some movies/games they use inhales often for an effect.
    The vocalists in the bands Begging for Incest and Resist the Thought has been doing Inhales for years and they don't seem to have any issues from what I've seen. They've done touring and recorded albums with only inhales and to me they still sound good, I've used inhales for an effect in some songs (then we're talking about a few sentences or one of two screams) and in my opinion I think that is a healthier way to use inhales, definitely not something to rely too much on. But the guys who are doing them all the time and well, I think it's impressive to be able to do so much vocals by breathing inwards.

      No, it literally means the body isn’t meant to move that way anatomically and that it’s physically dangerous because of the way the anatomy is structured. That’s like saying people who get CTE haven’t perfected hitting themselves in the head. There is no amount of perfecting that can reduce the risks from this particular sound because the mechanism is designed to work in one way.

    oddly enough , a clear vocal style was used on some seriously heavy fast songs... Corrosion Of Conformity , Blind album, #9, and ,#7...
    now i gotta look up inhale screaming, hope they stop, not into n^ü metal in the least...
    even purring like a cat while inhaling... you can feel the mucous constantly being stripped off (th vocal chords (?))
    and after a few seconds of self amusement, i stop.
    trying to talk inhaling, is sucky, cause it feels like phleghm may get inhaled.

    • @voicehacks
      @voicehacks  4 года назад

      It’s from Fry screaming - many folks have this happen from
      the compressed sounds. We have to be careful and make sure that we see a coach or therapist who specializes in tension dysphonia. In addition to the other issues, Inhale Screaming is also a compressed sound and could cause the same issues. But screaming is not the primary cause of tension dysphonia - it’s actually normal talking and usage. That happens to many people who don’t even sing, let alone scream, just to put int in perspective. The kind of issue you had can be cause by certain screams or tons of other things that have nothing to do with screaming. Also tension dysphonia isn’t typically permanent - very treatable!

    I do inhale all the time. If you do it the right way and use your mouth walls, tongue and uvula, and not your cords to modulate your sound, you will be fine. Its just good not to be trying to only do that from 4 to 5 hours straight. Use other styles in there to mix it up. Exhale is good but you dont have to use it. There should be no stigma on how to sing as long as you are doing it safe. There is no rules in metal. This was a silly video in my mind that just puts a stigma on certain styles of singing. Enough people think harsh vocals in geral are bad, we dont need to add to the hate.

    • @voicehacks
      @voicehacks  Год назад

      It’s not a personal “hate” or “love” of any one particular style, just more facing some anatomical realities about how the larynx is structured and helping you all to avoid injury where possible. I do have some vocal colleagues who don’t think the inhale is as unsafe as I do but I think it’s not worth the risk, when an exhale fry can sound almost exactly the same. Just looking out! But as you said there are no rules, everyone is free to do what they wish with their own bodies, even if it may be dangerous or risky. I just always try to advise the safest path, if you guys listen to me or not that is up to you! Best wishes!
