Got my a6400 with the kit lens for $998 from B&H about 2 months ago, LOVE IT! That Sigma lens will probably be my next lens since most of the time, my vlogs are at night since I work all day :O Thanks for this Sean!
Just picked up the a6400 and decided to go with the Sony 18mm-105 f4 w/ OSS. It’s a tighter shot when vlogging, but the extra focal length for b roll shots makes up for it. Having an ultra wide focal length is awesome but to start out with and keep it budget friendly, it’s best to go with multiple purpose lens. Think Media rocks ! Love the channel ! Happy shooting everyone ! 📸🎥
Not for vlogging, but for my workshop videos I use the E 35 mm F1.8 OSS . Some of the shots can be a little tight in my workshop but I love the depth of field it provides.
I would take the 16-50 kit lens. More versatility by being able to go out to 50mm, and also wide enough at 16mm for some vlogging content. The f3.5 aperture isn’t the best but Sony cameras are pretty good in low light so you should be able to push the ISO a bit.
Since I own all 3, I'll let you in on a secret. The Sigma is WAY better than the Sony 16-50 and Sony 10-18. Bokeh is amazing, and 16mm is fine for vlogs. Also it's super fast and sharp! buy a Crane v2 to pair with it.
Don't forget the 16-70/4 Zeiss. It's stablized, has the 16mm of the kit lens but also a 24-105 full frame equivalent and constant f4 so you can switch in a hurry to portrait length shots with reasonably shallow DOF. Plus 55mm filter thread is easy to find ND filters and polarizers for. Plus they can be had for reasonably cheap if bought used.
I just bought a6400 last Sunday and love it. But since I came from Lumix G8 which had great IBIS so I have to learn to shoot steady video with a6400. I bought a double kit lens that came with 16-50mm OSS and 55-210mm OSS. I love this 16-50mm lens. I have not used 55-210mm yet. #teamsony
I’ve wanted that Sigma 16mm since the day I heard about it. I got the 30mm f1.4 from Sigma about two months ago and it’s my absolute favourite lens. Saving for this one atm.
@@blackentrepreneur244 I honestly feel like I don't have the know-how to say definitively. I only recently picked up photography as a hobby. I use my camera predominantly for shooting song covers. So the 30mm focal length is perfect for me. I also occasionally do portrait photography with my friends so I wanted something with a shallower depth of field than the kit lens. However, I can't knock the kit lens at all. I got it bundled with the camera and I still use it when I'm roaming about to take pictures of random things. The ability to zoom is something I always miss when I leave home with the prime lens only. The crop-factor on the 30mm makes framing a little tight when you don't have room to step back. I recommend checking out Jason Vong's channel. He goes through these lenses as well and from the pros and cons of each of these videos, you could choose the one that would best fit into your workflow.
Thanks Sean, always a good round up. I've been using the 18-105 F4 lens - great lens, reasonable background blur when used correctly, only downside is it is quite big and a tight angle for when out and about vlogging - though have done this fine anyhow. Fine for my indoor review videos though. Defo got my eye on the expensive 10-18mm next
I'm a Canon M50 owner and I bought it after some research and a very knowledgeable friends recommendation. But I have this a6400 envy now. I just wish it had IBIS
@@Tennisfiles Good question. If your goal is to do more professional video, I would get the a6400. It comes with more video-centric lenses vs EF-M lenses which are more basic. However, if you have good skills you could do professional work with M50 also. I personally do not like the flip out screen. I think flip up is better but it's just a personal preference. a6400 has 120fps at 1080, M50 does not. For photography, both are equally good and M50 is way cheaper. Neither one has IBIS but a6400 has more weather sealing than M50 which is useful for landscape and outdoor photo or video. I would try both before making the decision.
I've vlogged with a 30mm Sigma 1.4 before and it came out pretty good, but it did require me to extend my arm and the joby as far as it could go to get the equivalent of what would be a 16mm lens. I have the 16mm Sony 2.8, which is flat and super easy to use, I might try it but from what I understand the autofocus on it hunts a lot, which is not great for vlogs.
I recently sold my Canon 80D, 10-18, 50mm 1.8, 24mm 2.8, and 55-250mm lenses. I bought the Sony a6400 with the 16-50mm kit lens. I just bought the sigma 16mm 1.4 a couple weeks ago and I haven’t taken it off my camera yet. It’s an amazing lens with so much potential. I plan on buying either the Sony 50mm 1.8 oss lens or the sigma 30mm 1.4 next.
I got a Sony a6400 with kit lens 16-50mm and I alaso got a prime lens, the Sony E 35mm F1.8 OSS, for my video in my home for tech review etc. Do you think I should have bought the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 instead the Sony E 35mm F1.8 OSS?
Thanks man. So enlightening video... I was not aware of how handy my 16 50 kit lens is... I was shooting my vlogs with cell phone... Just because of my Sigma 30mm f1.4 dc dn is not ok for vlogging....
Hi.. i hope i get a reply even tho this video is a year old. I make beauty videos and someone brought it to my attention that having my kit lens at 16mm makes my face look distorted because its too wide i believe. I was also suggested to get a lens that would have 1.8 .. what sony emount lens would you recommend. And do you have any suggestions for a longer wire for rode micro as that's the mic i use and having a lens that's 30mm or 50mm would require my camera to be farther away.
Thanks Sean, newbie here and just purchased the a6400, more as an all around photo/video/travel camera but may also try my hand at old-man vloging. I purchased the 18 - 135 kit lens and am currently scanning eBay for a used 10 - 18. May also look into that Sigma. Anyway, thanks for the always informative video.
I am looking for the sharpest possible lens to film myself playing/teaching guitar. I have the a6400 with the 16-35 kit lense. 18mm would be perfect. How is the Zeiss Otus 18mm? Or any recommendations anyone? I dont need blurry Background at all.
Sigma 56mm 1.4 is great for portraits and night sky... Could get the Sigma 30mm 1.4 for better night sky but a bit harder to use for portraits. The 30mm is great, because its very small for a 1.4
Not sure if this has been asked, but why the Sigma 16mm with a handheld gimbal? Wouldn't that give you the best of both worlds (minus the ultra wide angel from 10mm).
Great that clarifies a lot thanks. I got 6400 my first dslr with 10 to 18 and the 18to135 but im a bit disappointed with lack of blurry background so looking forward to get the sigma lense now 👍🏽
I have the kit lens and all I can say it's not bad but not great either. The 18-105mm is cool, at higher focal length has some really nice bokeh, but fully open, not good in low light and minimal bokeh. The 50mm f1.8 that I have is insane! All the bokeh and oss and everything, but being such a tight frame, it isn't vlog friendly. B roll though, makes your footage look like pro straight out from the camera. The 10-18 I don't have yet but the only downside to it ia the f4. I have f4 on my 18-105 and it's not fantastic for bokeh or low light. I'd definitely like a faster lens but perfect focal lenght for vlogging + oss... 95% all you'll ever need for vlogging. Tamron does an 11-20mm but has no oss, if you have a gimbal, that would be great at f2.8, as well as the 16mm sigma. No oss though means shaky video without a gimbal.
Amazing 😉 video . If I had to pick one lens would be the Sony 35mm f 1.8 will get nice performance at low light and great blurry background depth of field 👌🏻
@@IRFAN-po5sz 18-135 is already excellent versatility and you can live on that lens. I've had all these lenses and I'd take the Sony 35mm over a sigma 16 or a sigma 30. Autofocus is slightly faster and the OSS is great for hand held.
Nice but they are quite expensive well into the thousands...I could be wrong. Where is the best place to purchase and where do you recommend learning how to use them.....
I went with the 18-135 and the Rokinon 12mm 2.0. A Crane plus too 😊 Now to get out and create! Btw I really like your channel! You guys are inspiring! Thanks 😊
I do lots of guitar performance/teaching videos, most like volgging in door use, may be little for travel use. I use external sound card for all audio tracks, so the audio on the camera is not important to me. The a6400 with kit lens is about $1050, for about the same amount money I can buy a canon m50 with kit lens , plus canon ef-m 11-22mm f/4-5.6 stm lens , plus canon ef-m 22mm lens, which package do you think is better to buy? I consider video quality more important for my need.
