      Makes me wonder if the plan was changed slightly, because Austin was sick.....he was the first one eliminated, though I assumed that was because at that time he wasn't yet quite as over as the other guys. Very good match for all of them though, if Shawn had actually been injured and couldn't compete anymore long-term, this match showed that they could survive without him.

    People get heated about the Bret and HBK stuff, calling Bret bitter etc. Just to show the bs Bret dealt with, HBK lost the belt when Jose Lothario had a heart attack, Sid lost when he was hit with a camera, Hogan lost with fire in the eyes to Yokozuna, Yokozuna and Hart lost with salt in the eyes at Mania 9, Andre with a twin ref. What’s my point? The WWF title history was filled with almost every title change going on some sort of controversy, Bret put Shawn over clean dead center of the ring to a super kick. He was repaid by Shawn losing his smile, retiring and coming right back after Mania, and Bret got pushed out.

    • @donavonhoward114
      @donavonhoward114 8 месяцев назад +3

      Exactly. It wasn't that Bret was not ok with jobbing, or dropping the belt at all. It was simply how the WWF went about it. If it didn't serve a storyline, or benefit the characters involved, that's when he had a problem with it. He still did the job, and did what he had to do even if he disagreed with it. Regardless of whether Sean Michaels was seriously injured or not, nobody could believe a word of what Sean said at that point in his life because he was a huge deck of lies, deciet, and had too much power for a performer. I don't blame Bret thinking that Sean was probably lying about being injured, at least in a serious manner. I do know that Sean's back injury was serious later on, but I really think he just didn't want to drop the belt legitimately, and was hitting rock bottom mentally, so he needed some time off. Instead of just coming out with his baggage to Bret man to man, instead he chose to not do business that night, and go for the crowds sympathy with an injury angle. Sean even lied to Brets face about not being involved in the Montreal Screwjob later on. Sean said God was his witness, and his hands were clean on that one. Bret had something like 2 weeks left before leaving, yet Vince started to panic, so he got Sean to screw Bret over in the ring out of fear of the WWF belt ending up in WCW's trash can again on live television. Bret has made it clear several times that he simply didn't want to drop the belt in a way that would make anyone sympathetic towards his character, and that Montreal was the wrong place to do the job at that moment. Instead of trusting Bret who would never screw Vince, or put the WWF belt in the trash, they embarrassed Bret on television, and made his fans eternally sympathetic towards Bret when that is the exact opposite of what Bret actually wanted to happen when leaving the WWF for WCW. Bret still has to hear about that event all these years later, along with the WCW fiasco that Bret had to go through to end his career. Before that night in Montreal, Bret was on his way to ending a perfectly clean storybook career. The WWF muddied those waters, and screwed the good guy. They buried the guy who gave his all to the company, and actually took pride in his work, and didn't screw other wrestlers with bullcrap lockeroom politics. Just because pro wrestling is somewhat fake, it still meant something to Bret for him to have a clean run at the top of the mountain as one of the top tier guys. Instead, he was left with a great career that ended in controversy, and eventually life changing injury.

      I think that he got paranoid because he was champion in 1996. Back then, when you were in the main event your political opponents were just waiting for you to fail so they could take your spot (and shawn made a lot of enemies). With the pressure of being champion in an awful year and with his drug problems, he probably thought Bret was one of those guys, and that he came back only to get Shawn's spot.

I've heard Bret say before that Shawn's injury was bs but this is the 1st time I've heard him explain why--it makes sense why some ppl haven't forgiven Shawn for his prior acts. Honestly, after watching Reliving the War and getting to the Mania 13 buildup, Shawn shouldn't have regained that belt in the first place at the Rumble. He probably didn't get injured but he did "lose his smile", and he needed to get his shit together, because he was clearly crumbling mentally with the pressure of being the WWF champion in a time of horrible business while the competition was booming.
    But hey, it was 1996 and these things weren't taken into consideration back then.

    Weather Brett leaves Shawn Michaels was injured not doesn't matter this is Bret in his own mind narrative of what he thinks was going on versus what was really happening
    Something he will never take into account and this is part of the lost his smile he did get injured and it did require surgery and they came up with the promo about losing the smile and him surrendering the belt but there was another part of that if he said in the biography channel documentary he was still doing drugs that he started out with Marty jannetty when they first started working the territories and even when they got to WWE they were still using off and on and when he became a singles wrestler he managed to avoid a lot of the drug testing that they had at that time which was not real drug testing
    And part of that whole deal was Vince gave him an opportunity to take some time off stop using drugs get your priorities in order come back when you're ready and we'll continue as planned that didn't happen because Bret didn't want it to happen that nothing to do with Sean Michaels

      Bret has admitted a few times that some of the problems were his fault...but honestly he's not wrong here about Shawn's supposed "career threatening" knee injury. You don't come out the the ring and dance around and do back flips with that kind of knee injury. I mean Bret went out to have legit knee surgery and came back in a wheelchair and then was on crutches for a bit and even when he started wrestling again he had an extra knee brace on under his tights.
      Also just briefly touching on the Screwjob, Vince told Bret he was breaking their contract in September and even before that he wasn't sure if he was going to keep Bret. It was not some sort of surprise, they both knew for months that Bret would be leaving. My questions are one, why the hell would you put the belt on him in the first damn place and second, why the hell wouldn't you take the belt off him sooner? It makes no damn sense why you would keep the belt on a guy for months when you know he's leaving.
