- The Three Body Problem Netflix Adapatation "3 Body Problem" is being released at the end of this month and the early Rotten Tomatoes scores are in. They look.... okay?
In this video I talk about the reviews for the show, and my love of the book and why it might be unadaptable.
Let me know if you'll be watching the NETFLIX show or if you read the book. - Развлечения
I don't care if the Netflix series to be faithful or not, we already got an extremely faithful Chinese TV adaptation last year, it's what every hardcore book fans ever wanted, a page-to-page, word-to-word straight replica of the 1st book.
You know what I meant to mention this in the video and now I just kicked myself for forgetting to mention it. ARGH!
Thanks for the comment mate.
There is a legitimate reason for Netflix to westernize the show since Tencent adaptation exist. It'll be foolish for Netflix to try to out Chinese the Chinese adaptation because there's no way they can do it. It's like if China hired White actors to remake a Dirty Harry film in China. Would you watch a western cowboy film shot and produced in China? Probably not.@@PaperbackJourneys
@@PaperbackJourneys Btw, they just released a director's cut for the Chinese adaptation on the Chinese streaming platform Tencent Video, 30 episodes reduced to 26 episodes, they removed all the fillers and rearranged a few scene, some CGI were polished, the whole pacing moving a lot faster in this version.
Bro thank you so much!
The chinese version is great, any idea if they will do another season?
Chinese version is the best adaptation
Three Body Problem let's gooooo!!! I loved this book and am about halfway through Dark Forest, which is also very impressive so far.
One critique I heard of the new show that I'm disappointed to hear, is that allegedly the show "rearranged" the reveals and plot points, and supposedly includes plot points from the third book in the first season.. I haven't finished the third book yet so I won't be able to watch this when it comes out even though I was reallyyy looking forward to it. An interesting choice for sure, we'll see if it pays off.
Another great video as always sir
NO!!! You've got to be joking! I DID NOT know that. I finished the second book on the weekend and filmed a live reaction to the ending. I just need to edit it. It's a great book, but I haven't read the third book either. It seriously reveals book 3 details??? That's nuts.
I think if you just read the first few chapters of Book 3, you'll be fine. Jin Cheng and Will Downing and Jack Rooney & Thomas Wade are all based on characters in Book 3 (especially Jin Cheng and Will Downing, these 2 are major major players)
I'm going to point and laugh at people who only read Book 1 and think D&D are making up all new characters. That's only partially true, a lot of characters have been swapped to non-Chinese, but they more or less share the same DNA in terms of their character background and motivation and shall I say, personality traits?
And as someone who have read all 3 books, I completely understand why Netflix is introducing all the major characters early. As soon you flip open Book 3, you'll get what I mean.
@@PaperbackJourneys
Between both of your comments I think you just saved me some heartache. So you think I just need to basically get started with Death's End and read the first few chapters and I should be good for the first few episodes at least?
For the complete Netflix season 1, if you just read the first few chapters of Book 3, you will not be spoiled by anything. I can promise you that.
Netflix Season 1 - Episode 1 to Episode 5 = entirety of Three Body Problem Book 1 story
Netflix Season 1 - Episode 6 to Episode 8 = First few chapters of Book 3 and the first few chapters of Book 2 (Saul Durand is your favorite degenerate ladies' man, if you know, you know)
Netflix Season 1 - Episode 8 = D&D said the last scene will be exactly the same as last scene in Book 1.
@@PaperbackJourneys
@@PaperbackJourneys Yeah the beginning of Death end goes back in time, explaining an important project those characters did which was actually parallel to the first book. I think that's the only part DnD pushed forward (and they made the characters more involved in the show) which makes sense for continuity of the characters and storytelling I believe.
best review on youtube for a while...well done, got yourself a sub
That's very nice of you. Thanks so much and welcome!
The Netflix show is terrible. I will be surprised if they actually make another season.
As a non Chinese person, I would have preferred if the show kept the China centric roots. That's an integral part of the saga.
The two D & D nepo financiers are just chasing any story idea that looks like it will guarantee money. They'll butcher it every which way.
When I sold my 400+ books, this series is actually one of the few books I kept, THAT is how much I loved "The 3-body problem". So to me this is an easy decision - not going to watch the Netflix show. But that's because I gave the Chinese show a try and gave up after 3 or 4 episodes. And I felt the actors were doing a pretty decent job there, especially that detective, he was something else. I devoured all three books a few years ago and I'll just keep to that memory. But I'm looking forward to all the upcoming show reviews, I have a feeling those will be more fun. 😄
400 BOOKS!?? What did you move or just have a massive unhauling??? Do you still own many books?
How come you gave up on the Chinese show?
@@PaperbackJourneys yup I moved hahaha. I still have about 30 books now and my kindle.
Honestly, I am not sure why I stopped the Chinese show, I remember the next episode coming up and I had no interest in watching it. The first episode was so good, it made me so psyched, and then each episode got harder to go through, dialogues felt cringey, it was slow, I guess it just felt like something was lacking. Looking back though, I'm wondering if it wasn't maybe the effect you sometimes see when reading translated books, where some nuances might be lost in translation which can cause the book itself to fall flat and lose its essence.
I'm reluctantly optimistic
I think we've got the same attitude going into it.
I feel the show is a slight improvement to the books because it added more character development than the books. The show is definitely not rushed because there is a whole lot more that happens later and my only fear is it may get too complicated for most the same way the whole multiverse thing is in the MCU. I've seen the whole season and it's good so far. And I love the detailed science part of it all but like I said I don't think the general movie and TV watching audience will be interested in that because you would have to be a nerd like me to really like it. For me bring it on.
show really dumbs downs many of the ideas of the book
@@naka3339 of course. They have to because they need to make it simple enough for the general audience to enjoy. They can't just cater to us nerds. Lol
This adaptation is amazing 👏 very well done
I've seen the first three episodes and so far... I've got to agree. I think the adaptation is different in many ways to the source material, which I think is to be expected, but it's a great show. My wife and I are loving it.
I absolutely love the books. Fell in love Cixin Liu’s writing. Ball Lightning, short stories, the Three Body series. Superb stuff. I hope the series isn’t garbage. They have such good material to work with.
I’ve watched the first two episodes so far, and they are really rushing the book 1 plot. Having the transmission happen in episode two with no build up is a choice. The series is removing any tension for me. And having 5 people stand in for Wang makes it harder to attach to a character. Also, why couldn’t we just use Da Shi, why are we calling him Clarence?
That's disappointing to hear because the best part of the book for me was the tension and the overwhelming feeling of dread creeping slowly over me. Thats a vital ingredient. Thanks for the comment.
I thought they were doing fine right up till Judgement day. Kids on the boat was a bit too much for me. They didn't have to but they did. They cropped the science which is okay for new comers. It doesn't make it too heavy.
The thing I hated the most was how they setup the wallfacers so badly at the end, even over all the rushing and inaccurate adaptation, the wallfacers are the most interesting human element in the entire story for me and none are the same as in the books. The more I think of this, the more this Netflix crap starts sucking in my mind.
I finished the audiobooks on the trilogy and watched both adaptations. Both Tencent and Netflix did a wonderful job I think, but I think Tencent’s adaptation is closer to my heart because it renders the vibe and the feelings much better. But hey, how can we compare the two when Tencent has 30 episodes while Netflix has only 8 episodes to cover the same amount of plot plus a bit from the Dark Forest? In fact, I hope Netflix’s adaptation can get viewers interested in the actual book trilogy and encourage viewers to dive deeper into the original storyline.
Netflix spent $160 million on 8 episodes, while Tencent spent $10 million on 30 episodes.
8 episode but still filming sh*t @@tjw2469
Yeah I wonder to what extent DnD took into account that their reputation is at stake here when making the show. Bc they don’t have the goodwill of the masses now. I’m hoping for a redemption arc but we’ll see….
Finished The Dark Forest yesterday and I can confirm the ending was spectacular 😊
SO so so so good. I recorded a live reaction to the ending this weekend as I finished it. It's only March and I already know that this is a contender for book of the year for me. I loved it.
@@PaperbackJourneysone more thing (I was going to edit the comment but I’ll reply like this instead now) I’m like half way through book 3 and there are scenes and characters from book 3 in the trailer…. So maybe they’re meshing all the books together???
They are telling the story chronologically. if you read halfway into Book 3, then you know all 3 book characters have their beginning in the common era so for the sake of simplicity for casual viewers, Netflix decided that everybody gets introduced early and starting at years 2024 is probably a good idea. If you watched Season 1 The Witcher, then you know how the constant time jumps confused the hell out of people (ironically, season 1 Witcher being the best of the series lol). @@valliyarnl
@@roastpork5437 yeah doing things chronologically makes sense to me. But then why are they showing (without spoiling it for others) the ring structure? I’d understand if Wade and the PIA were a small subplot to introduce the characters but the ring is a major discovery after the conclusion of the deterrence era.
(I’m at the part of book 3 where Sophon answers Lou’s question at tea time iykwim)
I think we'll just have to watch and see what happens. If we know everything that's coming scene by scene (on Tencent's version) then it'll be kind of boring.@@valliyarnl
They did kinda fuck it up...
yep
10:50 I think you know but just in case, if you haven't finished the books yet, put a hold on the Netflix series as it does include few scenes from the second and third book.
WARNING - Netflix 3BP review
(NO spoilers)
6:00 Yes, as the comment said, it was too fast and too slow at few places. It was hard to keep up with the Netflix version even tho I've read the books and watched the tecent version. It doesn't slow down in between those moments and let you think about the gravity of the situation. I can see how it could've been overwhelming for non book readers.
I really would have loved to see the original characters from the book on the show. I don't mind the changes and we already have the tencent version.
I think 10 episodes for s1 would've been better but I get it, 1st season is always a big gamble.
Thank you! Do you think I need to read the whole of the third book before starting the series? Some people said I only really need to read the first few chapters before starting watching the show. My wife keeps asking when we can start haha.
I just started reading the third book today.
@@PaperbackJourneys Yeah you can start the series after first few chapters.
Okay awesome. Thank you.
Unfortunately I really didn't like this adaptation. There was no sense of dread or wonder. The science was told not shown. they actually did a better job of visually showing the scientific concepts in the Tencent version. Finally the thing I hated the most was how it treated Ye Wenjie. She's the best character in the novel, but she was simplified as an evil, hateful dragon lady.
I give D&D full permission to do a total re write for the 4th book . The fan fiction book
I have an extremely hard challenge for you: try to watch the Dark Tower movie without cringing (469% fail), and also can u pls live stream you reacting to the movie? Bc I’m curious to see what other tower fans think of the movie in real time. Thankee-sai! :)
You know what! I've actually watched the movie and I loved it... joking! It was one of the worst films I've seen in years. I still don't really know what they were trying to do. I spent a year reading that series and I recognized almost nothing of the source material beyond some surface level stuff.
@@PaperbackJourneysfr, the cast and crew are obviously servants of the crimson king
HAHAHA!
Season 1 contains the beginnings of Book 2 and 3 as well as the main characters.
Thanks so much! A couple of people have said this in the comments of this video and I'm so glad you all told me. I'm going to start reading the third book today just so I get a chance to meet the characters.
The made one of the greatest adaptations of literarure ever put on tv. George is the one who let everybody down by not giving them anything to adapt at the end The idea that they couldn't adapt this properly is silly.
Well...They didnt adapt it properly :D
I hate it how none of the characters are books characters except maybe Ye Wenjie and her only by name.
Science in the netflix show reminds me of the Mad TV sketch where Sopranos went to syndication and the edits for content left only conjunctions for dialog. What a mess.
We'll have to agree to disagree on this being a good book )))) But about ideas versus concepts, consider "Starship troopers" - the book's fundamental ideas are very different from what's presented in the action movie.
Ooooh! I've seen the movie but I'll definitely check out the book. It's satirical right?
@@PaperbackJourneys As everything with Heinlein, it's very multi-layered. Satirical at the surface, it talks about the role of the government and personal responsibility.
Awesome. That sounds great.
The problem with both Tencent and Netflix tv shows are they went down the human soap drama route which THE BOOKS ARE REALLY NOT.
the books are about a collective existential crisis and the Netflix show comes across as a crime drama with very little about the idealogical battle played out across groups of people, not interpersonal conflicts 😢
Agreed. They take a very different approach. The characters really were just there to serve a purpose in the books whereas they've been fleshed out in the show. Unfortunately I think it's hard to flesh out characters without giving them some kind of character arc or demons that they have to overcome.
Some of the comments under this video actually liked it for that very reason though.
I don't think a tv show would be well received by the majority if it didn't develop the characters.
@@PaperbackJourneysI can understand why some people might think Netflix's direction was more fitting for the format as a TV show but I think it undermines the source material.
I can't think of a better example than the recent Dune movies. Wooden characters, but their portrayal as chess pieces (with human emotions) caught in the battle between political factions and idealogical conflicts. But that would only work with the artistic direction giving it that epic almost religious atmosphere instead of trying to make everyone 'relatable' then it would have been far closer to the vision set out in Cixin Liu's books.
@@PaperbackJourneys also one of the BIGGEST glaring differences that ultimately made the entire TV series collapse logically is the writers turned the sophons from being observation/communication devices with subtle disruptive capabilities into fully fledged all powerful tech that could also control human technology i.e. changing tv screens, control cars to crash etc which makes the fact humanity has the ability to continue developing technology and build spaceships... contradictory!!!
I even regret watching the trailer 🥺
Oooup 😂. Made me laugh.
@@PaperbackJourneys 😁
Netflix has destroyed it
dark forest is one of the best books i ve ever read
Fernando... we're kin mate! I'm with you. The ending of The Dark Forest I couldn't put it down!! I loved it.
Get ready to be disappointed by season 2 then...
yeap that's what I'm fearing that's why I prefer to read the books before hand whenever I can, no series/movie can beat imagination@@Lornext
For a divisive book, and a divisive Director, anything 70% plus is fanastic! It couldve gone worse. If you read the reviews, all are polarizing.
You're right. It seems like people will have strong opinions about it either way and in a way that makes me hopeful. I really want this to be good.
Didn't make it past the first episode.
The books were great.
It broke my heart when I saw who was making this series. Of course it is not safe in their hands. They can't be trusted with anything greater than a soap commercial. These two are a disaster, they will ruin it. When I heard it was them, I realized I will never watch The Three Body Problem, I loathe them that much.
Cry more
I totally get where you're coming from. I'm willing to give them another chance but they did ruin my favourite tv show of all time. With that said... they also created my favourite tv show of all time haha. I read his book City of Thieves and that was pretty good too. This is their last chance for me though. If they abandon this for something else shiny then that's it!
Cry me a river. You're never going to watch it so be it. No need to be a Debbie downer on Three Body fans. GRRM is never going to finish his books, why don't you cry about that? Many of us who are book fans also watched Game of Thrones for 8 seasons, ending was not great but what are you going to do when the author is so slow that he's still not written the next book in like what? 14-15 years?
@@roastpork5437 What a silly you are. I am talking about D and D ruining television series. That's what they do, they are famous for it. This has nothing to do with GRRM.
It has almost everything to do with GRRM. D&D were hired to do an adaptation and how can you adapt something that doesn't have a concrete ending? So by your logic, D&D are incompetent hacks and they were left in charge of to write the ending for GRRM. Well, that's to be expected, 2 awful writers can't finish an epic and apparently GRRM can't finish it either.
Look, no matter what you say here isn't going to sway people. We have a completed 3 book trilogy with a defined ending. We also have a Tencent adaptation that is 100% faithful to the book, almost page by page scene by scene.
So please kindly 🖕

Yeah I liked the first book but I agree that the second book is a lot better. I'm just reading the third book now.
No spoilers but just watched and the first 3 episodes had me hooked but god the last 3 were so brutal .. just boring
Boring!? Oh no! That's the worst case scenario. I'm holding off of watching it until I get half way through the third book.
@@PaperbackJourneys I haven’t read the books so I’m curious to see what someone like you has to say about the show
The big bang theory has more science than this.
Hahahaha!! This comment wins.
Honestly, i turned it off after 20 minutes. just finished death's end so I'm hot off the heels of finishing the trilogy and was super excited about this adaptation. I was super let down by the fact that 20 minutes into this 40 minute episode and its all dumb dialogue without any of the scientists doing any science. like there's a very distinct lack of science in a VERY hard science fiction story. Seeing that review say the same thing makes me very worried that Netflix gave up of the good hard science parts for dumb spectacle. Like i don't care if the characters sucked give me the science stuff! The characters sucked in Jurassic Park and the science parts were still freakin' awesome in the movie.
"THIS PART HAS SPOILERS FOR THE ORIGINAL STORY SO DON'T READ IT IF YOU'RE STILL READING IT"
I hope i at least get to see them unfold a proton in 2 dimensional space. That whole sequence of discovering microcosmic universes and intelligent life with in a subatomic particle and trying to figure out to how to unfold it into 2 and 3 dimensional space so freaking cool. Honestly it was hearing about this sequence that got me to read the book in the first place.
It was not.
Those two bozos are somewhat decent when adapting ready material so the series might be watchable.
Right! Thats what I mean, they did the Red Wedding and all those amazing early episodes. I still have hope.
officially ruined. Just binged in sorrow and I regret watching
Saw it and I hated it! The butchered Ye Wenjie's character and the Oxford Five are flat, uninteresting and annoying, felt like I'm getting dumber when listen to them speak. Also with $160M budget you'll think the visual effect will looks epic but holy shit it looks pretty bad, especially the video game part and Panama Canal.
I can't believe it! Even the visual effects are bad? I thought that the spectacle at least would be the saving grace if all else failed.
Nope.
Oh no 😢. I still haven't watched it yet. It's that bad? It seems to have mixed reviews.
I absolutely hated this book so I don't care.
Oh no! It was one of my top 5 of 2023 and Dark Forest (the sequel) is probably my favourite so far this year.
@@PaperbackJourneysThe sequel was even worse, I couldn't even finish reading it.
Arghhhh the ending was the best bit lol. It had some of the best cosmic horror I've read. I get it it's not for everyone.
@@PaperbackJourneysWas fascinated by the first book, second was ok, abandoned 3d after the ⚠️ SPOILER ALERT ⚠️ solar system apocalypse, main character just became too unlikable and impossible to sympathize and since the whole story was revolving around her for quite some time already, couldn't find motivation to finish the book.

Why would it matter? The books were shit.
You read all the books even though you hated them??
@@PaperbackJourneys Of course not. You don't eat every slice of a moldy loaf of bread just to make sure there isn't at least one good slice in the thing. But I read enough.

Well I'm sorry you didn't get anything out of the books. It's not gonna work for everyone.

Short answer: No
Long answer: No, but spelled with a shit load of n's and o's.
That defeatist attitude is going to get us eaten alive by the Trisolarins!! LOL!
From the trailer they’ve already changed a bunch of characters and is set in the UK? This is not an adaptation, it’s a D&D fanfic special again. Its not that it’s not 100% book accurate that’s the problem, we know they are not good writers when they deviate from the source material, it looks they they aren’t even gonna try this time. They royally screwed GoT and I’m afraid it looks like they will do it to this one too.
Your bit about broad appeal is just a cop out, have you see squid games? If the series has substance people will watch regardless of the race of the actors. Your opinion is quite antiquated.
Squid Game was not made by Americans. It was written and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk.
@@roastpork5437 The writer for 3BP is already Chinese, they could have hired Asian show runners and director but instead the went with DnD, the guys best know for ruining GoT.
Look at it this way, a guy that was not American nor spoke English made a non English show that was better received to Americans than 2 guys that were Americans but couldn’t make a show for Americans good. If that doesn’t perfectly illustrate why substance is more important that broad appeal, I don’t know what does.
Mark when I said that something needed to have broad appeal I obviously wasn't saying that it has to be set in an English speaking country, I meant that it can't get too bogged down in the science as the book does (as much as I want it to) I know that a a tv show needs to appeal to people who aren't like me, and don't want to see an hour long meeting of scientists discussing sophons, and so the challenge is in finding the balance.
I would also argue that Squid Games is a perfect example of something that has broad appeal. A show where contestants play childhood games for survival. Everybody wants to watch it based on the synopsis.
I'm sitting here like ... At what point did I say anything about the race of the actors??? I can't even imagine what made you think that.
@@PaperbackJourneysI may have read too much into it if that’s not what you meant. It’s obvious the casting choices and change in settings they made, when people say broader appeal it’s usually defending those choices.
No way no day. Thats not me. I'm exactly the opposite of the type of person who would have that opinion. I meant broad appeal in terms of the plot and specifically the pacing. I did mention the characters and how they could be more interesting but that's absolutely nothing to do with race dude. Like when I finish the book series I'll be watching the original Chinese tv series too.
