I try very hard not to be pretentious about other people's interests, lord knows I love my fair share of terrible things, but when someone is unwilling to watch a piece of media simply because it's not in color I have a generally low opinion of their tastes and assume they must be pretty shallow.

There's a film called The Mill and the Cross.
It's another film about a painter, this time Pieter Breughel. It focuses around the creation of his painting The Road to Calvary.
I wont say too much about it, other than it's visually inventive, quiet, contrmplative, and engrossing if you give yourself over to it.
Rutger Hauer shows what a fine actor he really was.
There's a silent film called The Passion of Joan of Arc by the Danish director Carl Theodor Dreyer. It's shot mostly in closeups.
About 20 years ago it was rereleased with a new score of a capella women's voices. That's the version you want to see and hopefully recommend.

Thanks for your comments about both subtitles and black and white movies. People need to overcome their narrow mindedness and they will be exposed to some wonderful horror movies ( The Haunting w/ Julie Harris, the Innocents,Carnival of Souls) as well as great foreign directors ( Bergman, Cocteau, Fellini, Kurosawa, Ozu, ).

Better yet, people might consider reading some exemplary *books.*
"Before I start, I must see my end.
Destination known, my mind’s journey now begins.
Upon my chariot, heart and soul’s fate revealed.
In time, all points converge, hope’s strength resteeled.
But to earn final peace at the universe’s endless refrain,
We must see all in nothingness... before we start again."
    -- Diamond Dragons (series)

Paris,Texas pulled me out of my rot recently. Followed by Black Narcissus. Then Stalker. My brain feels rotten mostly but every now and then I smack myself and seek out some pure cinematic beauty.

Not a film, but fine actors and excellent blocking PLUS from a time when BBC would KILL historical docudramas, I, Claudius.

    Good List
I've been looking to see Thunder road. Jim Cummins other film The wolf of snow hollow was weird, good but weird.
I need to watch more Terrence Malik films.
At eternity gate was an Amazing film. If you like it you should check out Loving Vincent.
12 angry men is the reason I fell in love with screenwriting and the filmmaking process.
Cold War? interesting I've got o check it out.

This is a good list, but I've never seen a Jim Cummings film, so I will definitely be watching Thunder Road. As I was watching the video I kept thinking of the movie I like to recommend most these days, and it fits in with the theme of this video - Taste of Cherry, a 1997 film in Persian by Abbas Kiarostami. It's slow and meditative, but quite compelling. It's also a deceptively simple film that feels like a documentary (and at the end, it becomes a documentary), but the main story is fiction. It depicts a guy driving around the outskirts of Tehran as he tries to hire someone to bury him after he ends his own life. He gets into a series of debates with various people, such as a soldier, a religious leader, and a teacher. We never know what's really going inside the protagonist's mind. Although it's not an overtly "spiritual" film, in the end it's one of the most beautiful, life-affirming movies I've ever seen. Also, unlike many art films, it's very easy to watch - much easier than, say, Malick's films, where you're lost half the time. The narrative is pretty straightforward and you mostly always know what's happening. But it doesn't give any easy answers. Another thing I love about this film is the way it depicts ordinary Iranian people and how they live; you end up with a strong sense of our common humanity.
Criterion issued a restored version on Blu Ray a couple years ago, so if you want to splurge, go for it. The colors on the Blu Ray are absolutely gorgeous compared to those of the crappy pirate copy I first watched.

Brain rot has been the defining struggle of my life so far, so clicking on this as the last video I'm watching today before -finally- getting off of youtube was a no-brainer. After watching it I gotta say, I like you. New sub!

haven't seen the van gogh movie but it looks like it really romanticizes him and a martyr. he wasn't kicked out of town because his paintings were bad. it was because he was manic and fucking prostitutes every day lol. again, i have not seen the movie so idk. but the vibe of the trailer is kinda wild lol.

    • @TolikRolik
      @TolikRolik  2 дня назад +1

The film does take it more from how he feels and less about reality, so from his perspective, that's why he was kicked out even though it's not true. It does romanticize him a little.

I detest movies like A Hidden Life ("oh look Nazls are humans too!!!") and Van Gogh's one was just boring. The rest of the list is good
some slower flicks to enjoy - A Pure Formality, A Late Quartet, The End of the Tour, Spencer, A Single Man, Lost In Translation, Fallen Leaves, Venus In Furs, Hard Eight, Birth, Enemy, the Before trilogy
