Thank you! For those that haven't worked with the nut, I strongly encourage you to have the proper tools and patience. Go slow. I recently "winged it": What a mistake. Having the time-stamped sections is helpful.
I had to remove an old broken nut and install a new one.
Congrats. She's beautiful!
ah that's a pain in the nut! :P
@@landonbailey that's good man; very good ...I'm still smiling and I read that 5 minutes ago.
Every guitarist should build its own guitar just as every Jedi build its own lightsaber.
at least once! :)
@@landonbailey for sure! By the way I just bought a CV 50's after your review and I'm pretty satisfied.. just the sticky neck stressing a bit but I'm trying to see if I can get some kind of lacque instead of sanding it, maybe the aesthetic result is better..
Haha thats awesome! I'm planning a custom build right now and thats why I stumbled across this vid. I'm building the body myself, hopefully it doesn't suck.
not the best analogy but fair point
Every guitarist should practice every day instead of building its own guitar...
I've watched a lot of DIY guitar videos and this one is great! You strike a nice balance between simple and technical, and hopefully anybody who watches this can will be inspired to try things like this themselves!
hey thanks!
It's very nice for sure. I hope you keep this one. The switching and the neck are the stand out features to me.
Nice job on the color pallette. That blue looks awesome with the chrome hardware and roasted maple neck. Sounds great too. Love your channel man - a hidden gem.
hey thanks! appreciate it :)
I find you inspiring . I started one a year ago and I’m back again for your knowledge and skills. Thank you.I bought a few things last year and got sidetracked . Thank you for your help. I think I most stuff here now to find. I’m excited to watch again . Love the detail and the necks love the sounds . Wow .
hey cool thanks for watching!
Thanks Landon, this video is so stocked with valuable links and information. I can't believe I've been paying Guitar Center all these years for "signature" setups on new guitars. You describe it as a rather easy process. That Tele is so nice. Normally I'm a maple neck guy but that fretboard with the blue looks soooooo good.
Hey thanks! Ya I’m not expert, but it works out ok!
Very nice build and great tones. Tasty choice of amps and drives as well. Thank you for posting this. Awesome playing as well.
Thank you kindly!
Thanks for doing these videos Landon. The details and effort you do to document your videos and sources are invaluable to a rookie like myself.
cheers!
Very well composed and narrated. I suggest adding copper tape shielding to the pickup and control plate cavities. These should then be soldered together with insulated wire and then soldered to the ground wire in the control plate cavity. I do this treatment to my guitars and it reduces the pesky 60 Hz hum.
And 50 Hz in most other areas of the world....
I've been repairing guitars and swapping pickups since 1969 and building a partscaster is a couple of days work Simple. Even Stratocasters only take an afternoon- they'e actually easier.Terry from Oz.
Ive been thinking of building my custom tele for years and I've always been scared of not knowing what to do. After watching this video it made me realize how simple and very straight forward, so I told myself that I can do it so I took the first step and bought the body and pickguard for a start. Obsidianwire is also from New Zealand which where I live which is even more helpful because I don't have the tools to solder! This is a great video! it inspired me to build my dream guitar
Congrats! Have fun!
I have conductive shielding paint that I like to apply a liberal coat covering all cavities. I also like to drill out neck screw holes in body to ensure good connectivity between neck and body, also after stringing loosen screws and retighten to let strings pull neck into pocket tighter, all adds to sustain and better tone.
Good one... thanks for that neck-pocket tip
Thanks so much for this video.
One dude in Canada to another - I appreciate the time you put into this tutorial. I am building/assembling my first tele with my son and this has been very helpful.
awesome! any questions, just let me know.
I be Manitoban and would like that same tele. What was total $$$ cdn? I did not know about Obsidian Wire, thanks for that.
$1200 CAD 🎸👍
Thanks for posting Landon, love the guitar! Man, that wiring set is awesome, I'm going to look into it, love that spade setup. Sounds so much better through the Vox! That neck is beautiful...
hey thanks!
i made a hybrid parts stratocaster 10 years ago and now youve got me all jazzed to build a tele! Frankencaster here I come!!!
:)
Awesome job, great build demo, and a nice Tele for your collection. I love the Obsidian wire, and especially the 4 way switch with series and parallel positions. So many great options with that configuration.
Now you have to add it to your VOX mini super beetle demos. That tele’s going to sound awesome with the MSB Nutube technology.
ah ya I'll have to do another Tele Tone Tuesday with that amp and this Tele 🎸👍
Fantastic project Landon. It turned out great 👍👍
really fun picking and choosing the parts. and assembly was great 👍🎸
@ Lando27Music -- Very nice custom guitar! The colors look excellent together with the blue, the roasted neck, and the chrome hardware. Thank you for the well made video to enjoy!! You should be proud of the good work!
thanks!
I really enjoyed watching this build . Looks like a million quid and sounds sweet , especially with the Vox 👌
Thanks Shaun! It’s a weird thing because I agree that the Vox sounds great, but when I was recording I preferred the in-the-room Marshall sound over the Vox. But in the recording I like the Vox more.
@@landonbailey I was just thinking also, that of the many guitar builds on RUclips that are out there ; as long as someone follows exactly what you're doing ,they really would have to be a dummy to mess it up. Good video Landon.
Years of Lego experience as a kid! A bolt on Tele should be the simplest guitar to build :)
This is great! Thanks for showing us the way.
cheers!
GREAT video, thank you for putting in the effort to make this for us!!
👍🎸😃
WOW. I subscribed fast. No Hype and very clear and organized video. Thanks Landon. Appreciate your interest in helping new and beginners like me. I'm not doing this now, but you make this so interesting indeed! Thank you, maybe assemble other ones as well-Strat maybe ? Tx, Don...
hey maybe one day!
Excellent video Landon! I've added it to my Favorites list for future reference in case I ever get adventurous.
hey thanks for watching!
Another gorgeous creation! That color combo is drool worthy. 🤤🤤🤤
Thank you 😋
Very helpful you eliminated all my fears of tackling such project. Thx.
Glad it helped
Another great vid man.
Am starting to acquire bits and bobs for my first partscaster tele buld (first build ever) so this is a good inspiration. Cheers.
Love the look of the roasted maple. Great 👍 job sounds great.
cheers!
I've bought a bunch from the STRATosphere. Usually nothing "cheap", but would be untouchable coming straight from the factory. Happy to see this! Enjoy your new guitar!
ya they have a unique sales setup for sure!
I knew that was Stratosphere parts by the green zip lock bag 😂😂
Just watched the tele build learned so much from it. I’m thinking of doing my own build. Thanks for the great show mate. Colin. London 🎸✌🏻👍🏻🥂😎
cheers have fun! I've done a bunch of follow ups too
That is a beautiful guitar! I sure will be glad when I can get me one. Hopefully.
hey thanks!
Great video. You are one of the rare guitar review people who actually make detailed comments on the playability of the instruments instead of diving straight in to how the guitars sound.
I think there is far far more variation in the playability and quality of guitars than in subjective sound differences.
Too many videos seem to be “hey check out this new pickup versus the stock pickup!”
Both played with high gain and no real discernible difference.
hey thanks!
All good just seen the link. Cool vids I gotta sweet spot for Tele style guitars.
Loved it man, nice work and great guitar
Thanks a lot!
Easy to understand why people love these so much. Nice job on the build.
thanks!
Nice build and nice guitar. I like to slightly enlarge the neck screw holes on the body so they are not threaded anymore. The only thing that bites then is the neck. Every luthier I have ever spoken to says this is the best thing to do for neck, body contact joint.
This was fantastic - Thank for putting this together. I've felt that I could probably assemble a guitar, but after i was done would it even sound like a guitar? Your video gave me the confidence to work on my guitar....and do a proper setup! Thanks again.
It's so wholesome that you do self deprecating jokes, like every other builder I watch just goes "Oh I'm so pro" but you just admit your mistakes and even beat yourself over for them.
keeping it real since always. :).
@@landonbailey you earned yourself a sub my dude
Awesome job and great video! I enjoyed it and learned a lot thanks!
hey thanks!
Very cool video Landon, and in my case very timely.... Thank you Sir!
That was a grand presentation. Informative and fun to watch. The guitar is gorgeous and that neck is truly beautiful. Also, high marks for the videography, the close ups were excellent and well focused. Now I have to go and look at a few more of your videos. Greetings from Hamilton.
hey thanks neighbour to the west! I'm in Ottawa.
@@landonbailey Just discovered your channel. I'm binge watching it.
oh hey thanks! I try answer all comments, even on old stuff, so feel free to ask away :)
What a beautiful neck dude,in one of my favorite radius sizes 9-1/2, nice build choices,I definitely would of chose the same,I'm building an offset body Tele right now,but it's neck nothing like that beauty, awesome guitar Landon.
On my second T-Guitar kit... the first was an inexpensive kit made in China. My second build is a Wilkinson, better quality and still under $400 bucks. . . But that Fender plug and play solder-less harness sold me. That was a great build. The best part was being humble enough to show your string retainer hold down mistake. You nailed so to speak! New Fan!
ah hey thanks! I keep it real
@@landonbailey You said about how it would have been a real disaster if you'd drilled right through the headstock. A tip for you that I use when I don't want to drill too deep is measure the depth you want to drill then measure the drill bit and put tape around it above that depth (I use red electricians tape). That way it's easier to see exactly how deep you're drilling. Great build video!
30:00 Hot rod tele guys turn the control plate around and put the vol pot on the end so you can easily do swells.
I love the roasted maple neck, I have one just like it on my hand made Fender Telecaster with a 3 tone sunburst telecasterbody and Texas Special pick-ups and all gold hardware and my own custom premium electronics. I love it! I like yours too, good job.
Very nice!
Turned out super nice. I recommend adding links to where you got the tools. Great job!
hey thanks! yes I'll make a note to reference the tools I used. take care!
I'm in the Tele group with you.on FB. Just saw this in my suggested videos panel and wooooo weee, gonna be a good night lol
oh nice! I think I got kicked from those groups. oh well 🤪🎸👍
Good work Landon! Ironically you just built nearly the exact guitar I put together on Fenders web site last year. I love that color. About the only thing I'd have done differently is to have a maple neck with a rosewood fingerboard and Texas Special pickups.
nice!
beautiful guitar man
And the neck, awesome, never played a Tele, but Ive been wanting to buy 1,
Started playing 6 months ago,
I’m def hooked lol
Will def keep watching your vids
Rock on!
Awesome guitar and great video! I like your sense of humor.
cheers!
Great video. Very well done!
Thank you! Cheers!
That thing had a great sound thru the vox I think. Has that raw growl like I like
👍🎸
Yo man, this channel is great. I'm probably a few years behind but am narcissistic enough to have to type up something. Started playing again after 25 years because my hand was messed up in Astan and my doc said I needed to do something to combat the damage to it and arthriris from my decade in the army (a lefty guitar would have suited and been easier but she and my wife said no). So have been playing almost a year and am getting ready for a build (tele) which led me to this site. So... Thanks again
oh hey! sorry to hear about injury. good luck on the build, it's really fun to pick out the pieces you want 🎸👍😁
@@landonbailey thank you sir. Love the channel! Definitely subbed.
That roasted maple neck is a thing of beauty. Gorgeous guitar.
thanks!
I really like your "guitar room" ~ very stylish and inviting with great lighting. It's a place I'd want to go to to practice. Or just sit and visit with my guitars for a while.
Thank you so much!
Very nice work. I always wanted to do this but never have the loot.
Thanks for this. I have no musical talent but love guitars. In the glory of my youth I was all about the shredder guitars. Now in my 50's I'm now into the classics. If I could play it probably would be a Telecaster. This build makes me wish I could play. Thanks again.
👍😊🎸
Charles Berry
Go buy a guitar and amp
You will not regret it
Looks like a pristine version of my Relic Custom Shop Telecaster.. Well, except for the missing Bigsby Tremolo :)
That neck is absolutely beautiful
absolutely the highlight!
All I could look at was the scratch on the headstock freaken thing came out great.
it doesn't even show anymore. at the time it really hurt! :)
Hey thanks for showing me the obsidian boards. The 50s/60s Les Paul board I'm buying to put into a limited edition studio i acquired. 😁
Great job and very pleasant video.
Thank you very much! I've got a Candy Red video coming up this week
Another great and inspiring video. Thanks! My own partscaster bits are on their way (supposedly...).
Have fun! I love doing these projects
@@landonbailey I think I will, but my project has the added complication of painting the guitar body - filler, primer, paint, gloss - all with lots of sanding. Still, it'll be an education and like your Strat, the end result will be unique!
love that gorgeous tidepool color
thanks! ya it's a beauty
Tidepod not pool
@@Apollyon-sz9sn I think your talking about laundry soap. Tide pool is the colour name
Thanks for the tip about ObsidianWire, I am ordering OW for my own Tele build, first time builder, was not looking forward to soldering.
Have fun! ya I prefer them now. I just did two solder points on my latest build and missed the Obsidianwire option.
That neck is beautiful with that body finish.
That guitar looks a lot like my tele, same colour, pick guard
Great video!
nice thanks!
To push up the neck pickup I use something like packing peanuts or something that gives but springs back.
Nice video! Big fan of the Stratosphere too. One suggestion is that a bone or Tusq nut would make a nice upgrade. You even hace the nut files so your all set.
Really enjoyed this video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
It does look like fun.
Man, this is beautiful! i just bought a squire tele in the same color and a pearl white pickguard to rip apart. May copy yor build if you dont mind
for sure! have fun
I'm just starting to source out parts for a Tele I'm building (I'm also in the GTA), your videos will be super helpful, thanks for this!
have fun! I'm doing a Jaguar right now 👍🎸
I love your builder series of videos! Those roasted maple necks are really nice. I was surprised to see how it has a glossy looking fingerboard. I thought they all came with a satin finish fingerboard. Nice looking Tele. I like all the color choices and other parts. Your idea of screwing the neck in a little bit on each one and alternating is how I tune up a fresh set of strings. I bring each string up a bit on high E, low E, then A-B, and D-G. Rinse and repeat until they all are at correct pitch. I’m going to be checking out Obsidian. I hate soldering.
hey thanks! ya I think the glossy fretboard was an option at the time. not sure if they still are. cheers
Jeez, great job!
Great job bro and exelent video!!👍
hey thanks wilton!
Great build, very informative. That vox sounded beautiful but the marshall certainly left something to be desired...
Thanks
i didn't understand a single thing but i enjoyed every minute of the assembly
Thats where anime gets you in life lol
Love the color!
hey thanks!
Cool video, well done!
Thank you! Cheers!
The guitar looks so nice good job
cheers!
My God. That guitar is beautiful. Holy Cow!
Great job! Nice Guitar. I would suggest using your string action guage across all 6 strings, that will establish a radius matching the fingerboard. You can then double check with your radius guage. ✌
Thanks for the tip!
Good video and nice project... Oh yeah and nice guitar
thanks!
Man I love that neck
Def nicest neck ever ! Nice build .
Thanks!
Great video man very informative 👍
Glad you liked it!
Well done you should be proud I liked it.
Before drilling, use an awl. That will put a nice dent right where you want to drill and the bit wont walk around or skip off your mark.
thanks for the tip! I think at that point it was late at night and I wasn't fully using my brain :)
Or use a piece of painters tape, mark where you want to drill on the tape and this will prevent your drill bit from slipping.
next time I'll use my brain too. 😆
I use a small piece of painters tape on the drill bit to mark the needed depth.
Just looking at those packages, Fender sure could tighten up on the waste!
Yeah
I found that really inspiring, going to have a crack as soon as I can get the cash together, the guitar sounds really nice mate 👍👍
Best of luck!
@@landonbailey thank you 👍
Well done sir!
thanks!
That necks a thing of beauty, admit to going all gooey eyed. Broke out into a sweat when you drilled the holes for the string tree. OK now.
ya drilling those holes was the worst part 😳🤯😢😁😊🎸
I put a Mexican Fender telecaster together from a new body and neck.I had to get a hand from a luthier but it was great fun.I used an electro socket for the output jack and Tonerider pickups.
nice! what did they help with?
Lando27Music A set up and a bit of soldering.
Nice video. I bought a Fender Player Telecaster in the same color as yours (Tidepool Blue), and had someone replace the pickups with Fender Custom Shop. After seeing your video, I wished I had replaced the pickups myself. Could have saved some money. Doesn't look that hard, and I can solder. Oh, and the roasted maple looks nice! I just have the standard maple neck. Anyway, learned a lot from this. Thanks!
nice!
Thank you for this. I’m waiting for all my parts right now. I will have to drill the holes to connect the neck to the body. You mentioned to make sure that it lines up with the bridge? Any tips for this step.
I did it before on my first partscaster. I clamped the neck in place, then strung the high and low E strings to make sure the neck was positioned right. There should be some videos how to do it. have fun!
I have a custom tele with a lefty neck. I just need to find a luthier so I can have the radius flattened.
34.36 - I string the neck ... place the tree. Loosen the strings then drill the hole. Always works for me. You may want to try it. You can also place the tree with the strings on, then mark the hole. Remove the strings and drill.
Makes sense to install it like this
Well done dude. Nice Axe!
thanks Lucas!
Your video has inspired me to think about picking up the guitar for the first time since 1978. Helped a buttload. Always wondered what those screws on the bridge were for. Maybe that's why I sounded like crap. Or maybe because I was a shitty player. We didn't have Internet or RUclips back then. But we did have Eddie Van Halen and Tom Scholz so I guess that's a puny excuse.
hearing something like this inspires me to make more videos! that's awesome and great to hear! have fun!
