I have that neck. Carefull of the finish it chips quite easily or at least mine does. It matters not to me as it's on my partscaster. It is a little fat. Also the skunk stripe started to come out at the head stock end. I did repair it by loosening the truss rod and using super glue to glue it. Haven't had trouble since. After three months have you had any trouble with neck?
My son plays a stock Squire Strat with HSS config. He's got a lot of different guitars (including an US-build Les Paul), but that one is his favourite. Based on that: Definitely go HSS. Today, of course, we started talking about getting a splittable humbucker for it, adding a switch to run it in various modes; also polarity flip switch for the neck singlecoil creating extra versatility. This is fun!
Truth is the most fundamentally important thing any good guitar has is not so much the parts or brand, but the effort into its setup. This project sounds great Brad.
The quality of the materials and the engineering and precision are the most important features for anything. After that, the fundamental assembly should be easy for an experienced person.
@@MrJohnnyDistortion Uhh.... Yeah. Low quality materials on the cheapies make it close to impossible to set one up right. I don't work on them anymore. Too much work to make them playable and people don't want to pay for the "cheap setup" work. A Fender needs some tweaking. These chaepies often need neck angle corrected, new tuners, new nut, fret levelling and on.on and on. No thanks. Been there, done that.
My wife bought me various guitar parts for Christmas from TEMU. I got pickups, toggle switches, strings, etc. 2 out of 4 pickups were dead, the D'addario strings popped the high E when installed (probably factory defect strings), a strap lock fell apart before install, and the toggle I looked at seemed ok but I wouldn't dare solder it to anything. Long story short, you get what you pay for.

I've had various things smoke stained from years of club gigs. What always scared me was, if these things are that smoke stained, what do my lungs look like?
It's not all cigarette smoke. White plastic will yellow from moisture skin oils and oxidation... If it is only second hand smoke you experienced , your lungs are probably fine.
I'll second this but add that you don't even need skin oils in the equation. I've gotten computer equipment from climate controlled labs that is yellowed in an almost identical manner. @@williardbillmore5713
Nice job, I would have prefered to hear the guitar through a different amp like that Vibrolux, because the guitar doesn't sound very "strat like" through whatever that thing is...
When it comes to strat style guitars my HSS guitars get played the most with HSH being a close second. Whenever I find myself playing or practicing 90% of the time it’s on one of my two HSS guitars. It’s a very versatile configuration for almost any style of music.
Hi Brad ! The contest between You and Sean is incredible. Glad to see some good competition. Yo u got the locking Straps whereas, Sean doesn't have any Strap Buttons at all. A slight overlook. One thing on your build I notice is the "HUMMING" @timestamp 52:34. Shielding usually stops the humming somewhat. I didn't see a wire ground on the toggle switch like you had going to all the pots that could be causing it. Your build has some nice lows and highs in the range and mids are very cool as well ! BytheBy, Did you ever figure out if the Nut was Bone or Plastic ? Thanks Mate for a very enjoyable Video !
And something Chinese that's ripping off every American taxpayer, plus all the intellectual property ie patents etc that the Chinese totally disregard. Shameful. Brad is a communist lover.
Hey man! More power to you for making this vid. But I was a little disappointed when you pulled out $300 pickups to put in your $100 guitar. I wish you had bought some of the Temu pups. But carry on bro.
The company that made those knobs Floer or something like that. I have used several of their picks and they are amazing for the price. They are really good about give the real specs for the pickups they sell. They offer a good variety too and a lot of vintage wound stuff. Which is not normal these days. Especially for import.
Tip for the tremelo/wigglestick: put a small spring under the bar, it provides enough tension that the bar doesn't swing around and stays where you place it. There are springs made for it but something like the spring from a pen might work.
I take a plastic bag from the store and stuff it in as I screw in the wiggle stick ultimately creating a bushing where the threads mesh. Now it doesn't drop or whatever but most of all to me is there is no play between the threads. .as I wiggle the stick the strings tweak exactly without the play of loose threads. Just kind of thread the bag into the bridge with the bar then rip the remainder of the plastics away. Done
Ptfe,Teflon, none of that works on the treads it will be stiff and then losen up, use the spring that has been designed to solve this problem, there are also small ball bearings, pop the spring in, then one ball bearing then the trem arm, screw it in till you have the tension you like or the right amount of tension so the arm won't wobble in the socket, the ball bearing allows more tension therfore more responsiveness snd less wobble because the threads are under tension causing friction, but the ball bearing adds or more takes away the friction of the top of ghe spring contact to the arms end flat tip enough so the arm will still swing and drop out of the way freely leaves it out of the way and responsive to slight touches. Plus adds more height so you don't have to bend the arm up as much so your not accidentally hitting the volume and tone knobs, a felt washer in-between the knob and pick guard I use on the volume knob to make a stiffer knob, yes I said stiffer knob lol, this is good if youve got clean pots that turn very easily or have just sprayed electrical contact cleaner in on a maintenance check.
Every Strat has one, under a round sticker on the vibrato plate, and it's probably the first thing that gets lost or thrown out by people that complain about their loose fender vibrato arms...

Hey Brad my name is Collin love your show I was going to give you a bit of advice on adding paint to your logo. It's called color filling a lot of people do this to their pistols to have the letters pop. You add the paint on top to what your wanting to fill in then you'll get a credit card or piece of hard plastic with a straight edge and push firmly and pull the card towards you essentially pushing the paint into the areas that are recessed and removing the paint on the other areas that are flat. Very simple and effective way to get an even painted look without it pulling the paint out of the areas that are engraved. Just thought that I would share that knowledge with you. I've learned a lot from watching your program and I am thankful for all that you've shared. I'm glad there's still people out there that speak their mind an are not afraid of what others may think or say. Keep up the great work brother! Catch you on the next video. 🤘
Great build Brad! I have had my eye on those $60 made in china necks I've been seeing on eBay, and this gives me some optimism. I want to build a 25.5" scale length 4 string bass for my daughter to learn on. I saw one made from Wenge that I really am intrigued by too...
I bought one. I am making a Van Halen strat for fun. I don't care about it at all. I am just using all the parts I have gotten over the years. The China neck is OK IF you are ready to do a fret levelling, sand the neck (it IS a baseball bat) and refinish it. I chucked the nut to install a Floyd Rose. The nut fell apart in my hands. It is a complete POS but works for the guitar I intend to build. In the end, it IS a piece of maple shaped like a strat neck. The rest is up to you to make it good.
Hey Brad..got a question i need Technical answer to..or just your two cents worth...is there a Quality low cost amp kit that replicates the old Plexi sound..heres my take on the Minute sound qualities for each Manufacturer..want Bright sounds...Get a Fender..want crunch..go with Orange or Vox..want High Gain,,,its Marshall..with that said..Please correct me if im wrong.ive looked at several makers such as Bugera..ive heard their tube qualty is questionable..is an Infinum55 worth the risk of having to replace tubes in a year?
That did get a pretty legit sound for the money. I mean the efforts certainly can’t be done by everyone. But you’ve proven that with said effort and ability. A great guitar can be achieved for a fraction of the price. Keep up the great work Brad. 🤩.

After seeing your last video I decided to try out TEMU. They do have some good stuff. I picked up a few holders for my phone for making videos. They seem to be working just fine.
9:30 It's mostly UV rays. To do it chemically you need more aggressive compounds like chlorine gas. Tobacco smoke only leaves residues that look brown. But they don't change the polymer chemically. And if they do they only do it very lightly.
It may not be a "plywood" body in the traditional sense, but you bet your butt it's plywood in the direction of the grain. I've personally seen a 15 piece Strat body come out of China. Seems like it wouldn't be worth doing all that extra work.
wow Brad, you did an amazing job! I love the look of the guitar, and I think it sounds amazing! The way you wired it, especially with the blend control made it truly unique, and nothing like you will find on a standard Fender. Sounds phenomenal and extremely versatile!
Every app wants access to your device. Including RUclips. The difference is that RUclips uses AI to generate ads that they think you will like. Facebook as well. Temu not so much. 🤷 I'd stop spewing that false propaganda if I were you.
Just a heads up for the engraving.... since it has a finish, you can actually go do a much lighter engrave and it will look white basically. Plus if you mess up, it's easy to sand back. Only caveat is you wouldn't be able to respray it. Food for thought if anything
I've got a Mexican Strat from 2001 I bought when I was in high school with white pickguard and pickup covers, never been around smokers much, mostly indirect sunlight exposure. The pickguard has yellowed to a sort of light cream colour, while the pick up covers are still a pretty bight white. It makes me think that the plastics are of a different formulation if they'll resist UV differently. However, the darker yellow (sort of bordering on a light orange) is really making me think nicotine, especially if you can scrape the colour off easily. But it might just be different plastic formulations used over the years that accounts for different reactions to UV light ... and probably some exposure to smoke.
I just finished watching your video and Sean's - I think yours takes the competition, hands-down, on electronics and overall tone. Being honest I like his aesthetics just a touch more, less "busy," but tone is the heart of the instrument and yours takes the crown there in my personal opinion. Second trophy for personalization and creativity also goes to you Brad, thank you for sharing this video! (I also give you the certificate for demo, fantastic playing showcase!) (BTW i'm surprised you guys didn't replace the nut with a ceramic or bone nut from Temu and shape your own from a blank)
Awesome video. Got a bunch of parts for really cheap, even compared to Amazon (where I usually get most of my parts). Any chance you can share the wiring schematics you used? Thanks!
Is there a better? They’re both amazing! You and Sean built amazing guitars? It’s a cop out answer, but it’s the truth! They both sounds amazing. It would be super cool if you guys swapped guitars and reacted to each other’s builds!
Beautiful wiring job. I can really appreciate the cleanliness and attention to detail. I really enjoy building partscasters. If you know what you are doing, and you focus on the details, you can make something that is either on-par or surpassed any production line offering. The problem is when you go to sell a partscaster, it's hard to get what you have in it. It can be an expensive rabbit hole. Nice build!
Hi Brad, tip on the trem arm setting. Use a spring from the intonation setup, put it at the bottom of the trem hole and the arm will bite better when screw down.
@@maxmustardman298 I've had the thread go on these units, (you know you e (you know you turn the screw but the thread's gone inside the unit, no longer moves forward/back turn the screw but the thread's gone inside the unit so it no longer moves forward/back) so assume that's what happened. If he fits a replacement (order, or from the parts bin) it should have the spring in it // possibly? You need a 'flat washer' on top of the spring for base of trem to contact (ensure uniform compression). Howere as pointed out above, there are probably better suited/stiffer springs out there, maybe even made for the job.
you replace the part with the busted thread. If the threads gone, as can happen if you screw in the intonnation screw with full string tension on - you replace the individual intonation part. There's six of them, one for each string. The thread goes they're about as much use as a fly swat in the artic.
I've been hyper fixating on guitar building over the past few months and strats are so easy to customize and there are so many customization options that paying a premium for the fender name is both boring and expensive when I could be spending that money on my own creation. Sweet video!!! I'm inspired to try temu now for the same purpose
I would be proud to gig that Strat as a number 1 any night of the week. Excellent (and meticulous!) work Brad! I just might make a guitar from a guitar kit now!
Honestly, I like them both. Sean's neck is defiantly nicer, and it sounds crisper when fretted but the tone blend on Brad's is amazing. I would like to see a combo of the two. I'm afraid my vote would be a draw. I would like to own both because of their differences.
Wow what a fun video to watch. I'm working a strat re-wire myself, and would love to do the neck / bridge blend like you did on this guitar. Is there a separate video for that or a wiring diagram?
Hey Brad, what a fun project build! Wondering if a P90 in the bridge could make for interesting tones in that Strat? Only ever heard a Tele with P90's, but never a Strat. Cool video as always man, thanks for sharing. Cheers
Exactly! An overwound single coil that fits into a humbucker routing. Thought it may give some interesting variation, but Brad has absolutely nailed it with his set up. Very Blackmore-like vintage tones when he used the blending pot I thought? Cheers @@watcher_1960
Dude, people shredding without a pic is so weird. The first time I saw it, it really freaked me out. I was like, "this dude is some kind of prodigy." But since I have noticed lots of people doing it. Including the other player in my band. It's all Mandela effect! The pick-shredding and the intonation screws stripping that I mentioned in my other comment. But obviously, you're nailing it with these videos. When I comment multiple times on a video, you're nailing it! Thank you for the video.
That's a nice build and definitely a nice strat tone flavor. Not exactly the tone flavor I have in mind for a strat. I am gradually modding an Ibanez AZ47P1QM to be my general purpose shredder super strat. I have been dealing with some issues because of where Ibanez cheapened out on it, which I just about have sorted out. I am now starting to think about the pickups I want in it. It has some generally nice pickups in it, but they are just a little too dark and sterile for me. It is an HSH config. My tonal goals are to have coils splits on the humbuckers. I am wanting more of a Gibsony LP sound when in full humbucker mode, but when they are split, to have more of a throaty strat sound (think John Mayerish). My next mod will probably be to have the neck profile sanded down to more match the profile of an Ibanez wizard II neck, which I have on another guitar, and that neck profile is the most comfortable for my fat wide fingers.... so I think it is the best neck they ever did. I also want to find an adjustable spring mod for the 2 point trem that will allow to tune from E to Eb and readjust on the fly without much issue. I may have something for that. Once I do that, it will be set... and it will be my general purpose playing guitar. Cheers, Tim

Well, I like the HSS setup. You still get that Strat sound. That iconic Gilmour, Hendrix, SVR sound on the 4th and 5th positions but a little more meat from the bridge end. So, you do you but you asked.
Looks damn good Brad, hell of a job man. Love the etched logo on the headstock....whitewash stain would have worked well too, but you got it man. Looks great!
I was in agreement with you in the beginning about the tortoise shell pick guard but I really like how it turned out. I think the neck looks really good and I like the color of the fret markers. It also sounds amazing, but I figured it would with the choices of pickups you had along with your knowledge about which ones would work together.
watching you noodle away is extremely therapeutic. you have a superbly clean playing style, fast and articulate. A real treat haha. Its a killer guitar too man. I recently acquired a real oddity in a trade, its an Yngwie malmsteen strat, however it is not a real one... but it is not like any of the chinese knockoffs or fakes id call it more of a 90% replica. Its super smooth to play, all the details are correct, brass nut, 1 string tree, the pickups are surprisingly decent, the headstock has the correct shape and all the writing and logos are where they should be, following the correct spacings and curvature, even the scalloping is done extremely well (but not quite as deep as the real deal). It feels and plays great. The previous owner claimed it was built by a luthier for him (the owner is currently attending a music college and this guitar was kept at a high standard for that) its got genuine fender tuners and a genuine tremolo. The thing stays in near pitch perfect tuning and the intonation is perfect. I feel its a worthy jumping off point for a modding platform but im really struggling with the idea of changing anything as it literally feels perfect but it just doesn't QUITE get hot enough for my liking. Unfortunately ive been ruined a bit by Metal, particularly 80's stuff. Im going to replace the bridge with a seymour duncan hotrail which should just about get me there. Ive got a few spare parts laying around, and with this current bridge pickup and a dimarzio true velvet for the middle and an SD hotrail for the neck, this video has inspired me to create something for myself, by myself. I love the look of partscasters and yours looks incredible. It goes to show that things dont have to cost thousands or have fancy branding to be solidly built, smooth sounding and reliable instruments.
I love seeing yours and Sean's videos you two make me laugh and smile. You both are going to make me better at building a guitar. BTW I'm looking for 2 gibson t-top pickups even if they need repairs. See you in the live streams. Peace out.
I think that single coil is a Seymour Duncan quarter pounder. I almost bought one 4 or 5 years ago and I remember it having those fat pole pieces. I could be wrong though, I'm not sure if there's others that have those fat poles.

So I just did a build of a strat and the one thing I’m having issues with is the neck is slightly too close to the bridge (hence intonation is off). I suspect the solution is to add a bit of a back angle to the pocket so the neck angles back a bit. Any tips on how to do this accurately ? I don’t have a router or anything just a good set of chisels. Maybe sanding the butt of the neck is a better solution ?? Thoughts. I’m new to this so any tips/trick/gotchas would be helpful. Currently I have business cards stuffed in there to see what is going on but this raises the fretboard height and I’d like to drop it back down.

Yep. Time spent tweaking is priceless.
No thanks. Been there, done that.
this is 100% correct
Parts are actually pretty important - what really doesn't matter as much and people talk too much about it is wood.
So.....Everything went as expected.
Probably counterfeit D'Addario strings .

One of those mystery pickups looks like a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound single coil.
Especially if you've got coil splits
I hope you notice this, I've been searching for so long about the knobs you swap from your tuning pegs! Where did you get it? Thankyou!!
Tip for the tremelo/wigglestick: put a small spring under the bar, it provides enough tension that the bar doesn't swing around and stays where you place it. There are springs made for it but something like the spring from a pen might work.
Or teflon tape on the threads
I remove mine because mostly I find they’re a PITA.
lol, dremel comes out for the neck pocket... then the hammer comes out for the tuners...game over.
1 Vote for Brad. Well done. Love the T-Top and the blend. I am surprised on how nice the switch is and the tuner buttons are a great idea.

It's mostly UV rays.
Whatever settings you were using, that guitar came alive at 58:28. Sounds fantastic! Thanks for the post, Brad!
wow Brad, you did an amazing job! I love the look of the guitar, and I think it sounds amazing! The way you wired it, especially with the blend control made it truly unique, and nothing like you will find on a standard Fender. Sounds phenomenal and extremely versatile!

What model is that Epiphone amp you have under that Hammond? Sweet looking amp. How is it, is it any good?
Only problem with the TEMU app is it spies on every little thing it can.. it wants access to everything on your device.
The Strat neck for $40! and Strat body for $60! Plus the neck and body are very well made, this is amazing.

The weak springs do nothing. There are extra strong small springs for the that and they are 10x stronger.
@@JohnDoe-tx6uyYes; I’ve bought Fender branded ones for my Strats; they work.

I'd like to build a Telecaster version of your Stratocaster. Can you recommend a pickup that will give me the most twang for the buck? Great video!

Nice work! What's the laser engraver you're using?
Honestly, I like them both. Sean's neck is defiantly nicer, and it sounds crisper when fretted but the tone blend on Brad's is amazing. I would like to see a combo of the two. I'm afraid my vote would be a draw. I would like to own both because of their differences.

Wow what a fun video to watch. I'm working a strat re-wire myself, and would love to do the neck / bridge blend like you did on this guitar. Is there a separate video for that or a wiring diagram?

p90 is just a single coil.

"losted mapel neck, that's what they wanted to make..." Hilllllarious! The neck looks like a strangled Peking Duck.
Think i'll stick with my American Strat and Les Paul Custom. Thanks tho.
Cheers,
Tim
Best of luck.

Peace out.

was surfing amazon for pots when i found what they called an ssh strat style face plate.... but it had what looked like 3 humbuckers with a toggle switch added for each plus the usual 5way selector switch, 3 pots and jack; all assembled -$25 w/tax. when i examined it... it may replace my starcaster (an ssh) but i planned it as parts to share until i traced out those little switches.
my curiosity led me want to trial that plate soi went after a neck and bridge. but found a complete diy kit w/sss ; same shape as your temu body. even the holes and all. it's unpainted basswood; maple neck; rosewood fretboard; everything in the box but paint and a screwdriver. -$75 and i still got a spare sss faceplate left over.
it plays much like the starcaster but warmer and moody but those 3 little switches kick it into 'higher dementia(n)s'. the spst switches maybe cut or include 1/2 of each pickup (maybe) or series/parallel??... i may have noted the wiring but forgot to ohm the pickups and now it plays so it stays.
try that humbucker; and maybe look into 'messing' between the coils. a dpdt switch can reverse polarity on 1/2 the humbucker. that can add interest when combined with another single pickup, they say...in a book i got.

I have the Steinberger tuners on one of my strats, with the round tuning knob on the back of the headstock. They work awesome, probably not as ergonomic as the ones you have on yours though.
Prob 80% of what we already buy is from China. If I have any choice, I am not going to push anymore money that way. Tuners…to each his own. But, if someone spends that much time twisting tuners…that it inflames any condition you have…you need figure out what else is wrong. Twisting tuners for a few seconds jacks you up, put pumping out some tasty licks for an hour is not an issue. And if some chick sees those tuners…she is probably gonna think you can’t flick the bean for her, if needed.
+2 for the “flick the bean” comment
@@TheGuitologist I have won. I will now quit the internet. Keep up the vids.
