Whenever i drill into a headstock i use a hand drill its a pain in the ass but it gives me accuracy into how deep im making each hole

A very informative video, to be sure. I should have searched Amazon for a video like this when I built the Telecaster I did several years ago. Mine turned out fine without it, but it would have definitively saved me one big headache. When I turned the amp on it was extremely loud with electrostatic noise. So loud that it couldn't be left that way. I realized at that time, that I forgot the one ground wire to the body of the guitar. Once I added the ground wire, it was actually very quiet. I got that copper shielding tape, and shielded all of the guitar cavities. Some of the parts I used different were, roller string trees. I used locking tuners, and individual saddles. But, I decided to use individual saddles, only for intonation reasons. The others like the one's in this video look more traditional. The cost is not much different for either. That part really just depends on what look you are going for. So anyone who thinks you need to be a professional, I can back this gentleman up here on this video. You do not need to be a Luthier. This guy did a solid job on this guitar, and so can you!

A tool you could make good use of is a Transfer Punch. (or a set of them, they're not too expensive). These would be for marking the drill hole(s) in your neck.
Mount the neck with the two holes that came pre-drilled, then mark the neck by using a transfer punch through the body holes. A transfer punch will ensure you've got the center of the hole marked perfectly. Once marked, you can unscrew your neck and drill the holes on the press.

You seem to take your time and that will often stop any disastrous mistakes. The solderless electric component kits save a lot of time. Set up does take time though and you got it done fine.
I like the pre-worn neck but I'm not keen on large Fender headstocks on tele bodies but that's just my personal aesthetic taste.
Your videos are very well made and you must put a lot of time into them - well done.

Eric Clapton had a telecaster that looked a lot like this one. He played it live at Hyde Park in '69 with Blind Faith. Maybe you have seen and heard it before. Great tone from that guitar and he used the neck pickup or both the whole time. I don't know if his was the early wiring or normal wiring.
I've seen a video with him talking about it. very cool

Awesome looking Tele. Get yourself a small mallet with the black and yellow heads. Cheap at Princess Auto. Use it to pound in the string ferrules and tuner bushings.

it's the '72 Deluxe Tele headstock, and if I had to guess, money savings back then, and just carried over for the style these days
I see everyone’s suggestions for tapping in the tuner bushings but you could also use you clamps to ease them in or a smaller clamp with protection for the wood surfaces. White is neutral, black and red are hot

8:15 I've never been able to see mint green in any photo or video. They always look similar to parchment for me. Maybe it's my computer monitor, because when seeing one IRL they do look minty fresh.
I have another mint pickguard that has shades of green. this one doesn't though.

You can take Sharpie off a lot of plastics/other stuff with a Dry Erase Marker. Just draw over it and wipe with a paper towel. The guitar looks awesome, sounds great on Where Is My Mind and Paranoid Android. I took the Yosemite Humbucker Neck (Too Muddy)/Tele Bridge (sounded good) set out of my Performer and threw in a Twisted Tele set with a 4 Way Switch based on your build videos.
ya those dry erase markers will take anything off. the chemicals in them are kind of scary. Ya Twisted Tele are awesome. I'm possible thinking of a p90 in the neck of this one in the future.
@@landonbailey Fralin and Lollar both make a really good Humbucker sized P90. I'm building a Jazzmaster HH right now that I almost got the P90 Humbucker for.

Some people DO see green when looking at the pickguard! One of my Telecasters (30yeas old), is Olympic White, with a mint green pickguard, and when she refers to it, she asks "the Green One?"
I have another mint pickguard that does look green. held up side by side, this one looked more white
When I drill into any finished wood surface I clamp a thin piece of wood over the spot I want to drill and any lift from the drilling happens to the piece I throw away instead of the actual headstock leaving a perfect hole on the instrument...you do good work Landon...
appreciate the tips! quick question, the piece of wood you put on top has already been drilled right?
@@landonbailey It wouldn't have to be if it were marked and clamped in the right spot but it would still protect from lift...I use something like a piece of cedar shake would that's not two thick..I think either way you'd get the same result as the clamps would keep the surface wood from bubbling up..or firring

I liked the specs you selected and the video was both informational and entertaining.
I probably would make use of the humbucker neck mic routing and mid mic routing to build something a bit Nashville style with a humbucker neck mic just to make the guitar more versatile, but each to his own. Hmmm... a P-rail neck mic... Noooo! got to resist the temptation 😬

Hi Landon! Great video, as usual. Quick question from a fellow Canuck: how do you get Sweetwater to ship to Canada? I thought they didn’t do that.
hey there! I believe there are restrictions on certain brands. I don't have a clear picture on the whole thing. I've bought things from them since 2015, usually when the dollar is good.
Why do Strat and Tele bodies have that extra hole below the pickup cavities? If it is for space to add an extra switch on the pickguard why don't they include a channel for the wiring?
The extra hole tells you it's a MIM body.
I believe it's used in part of the manufacturing process. like an anchor point for something. I'm sure someone knows for sure
Another great build!! Looks and sounds amazing. I have a quick question, when setting up the string action, are you setting it around the 1.5 mark on the sting height gauge there? I have a tele that I need to set the action on and it looks like none of these handy gauges have 1.6 marked on them. Thanks from the EaSt Coast eh!!

Nicely done. I noticed the neck is micro tilt ready. Have you any experience with micro tilt? I normally use shims but micro tilt would be easier.

Yeah in the 50's they were still using the same strings as acoustic which use a wound g and the g share the same saddle as the d string they also used flatwounds alot
Thank you for this great video! Question if you have a couple minutes: how hard would it be to swap a tele single coil for a humbucker on the neck... in the new Nashville Player Plus? It would seem for example that changing the wire(s) for the Hum to 500K might get involved?
Hey there! that's a good question. I'm thinking of maybe putting a P90 eventually, which sometimes calls for a 1K pot. However, to add a humbucker, you'd need a different pickguard with the humbucker slot, then ya it would be a pain to change out the 250K pot (and 1K in my case)

hey there! it's tough to make a direct comparison, because the Mod Shop is all USA made and assembled. But ya roughly that amount for just the parts.

hey there! what you see in the first is the first quick setup. I always go back and do more work on the nut as needed. that can mean more filing and rolling the corners

they should fit yes
You could have used a block of wood and a hammer to properly seat those tuner bushings, other than that, a really nice looking guitar build.

Landon, if you ever get a "Nick" in your "Relic" Telecaster, you won't be able to take it into town to get fixed. Why? Because they live in "Gibsons".
Landon, Is it possable to get a Roadworn neck with a tele headstock and 9.5 radius? If not RW do you know of an alternative?
I think they only do the 7.25 " radius. What were you looking for in terms of alternative, like a comparable neck finish feeling?

To be honest I like road worn on on old well played guitars it's getting 😤😤 a bit boring as everyone is overdoing it on new guitars .
I've wanted to do this forever, wondering if its worth it to buy all the parts and assemble a guitar, or just buy the finished guitar tho...wouldn't the cost be pretty close to buying a fender new, once you get all the parts ...I'm always bouncing back and forth between Warmoth, Stew Mac and Ebay/Amazon parts
it really depends what you buy and spend. You can spend more than the price of a new guitar on a neck if you wanted :)

Holy Moose, that's a lot of chapters...looks like a badly fragmented hard drive back in the day...anyone remember HDDs ? you won't find them on Tikfok. Great video so far (6:53min in...). Since I should be sleeping already, this should help and then I'll rewatch what I already memorized in my half-sleep like a lazy hound with one brain side asleep and the other side alert at all times.

Are 9 -42 still okay for downtuning? Still not sure if I like 10-46 and I play in drop C a lot.

@@landonbailey fair enough, some of the bands I like I have to down tune a good bit for their songs Eg :Seether, Killswitch Engage, Three days grace, Red Jump Apparatus. Ect
when I try to learn a new song and I see it's a step down or drop D, I usually get turned away because of laziness

As a teacher who has "occasionally" used permanent markers on whiteboards (ahem), there *is* a way to get it off polished or plastic-y thing. Go over the permanent ink with a whiteboard marker - then rub clean. It may take a few goes and you might then want to use alcohol to get rid of smears, but it works.
