The most underrated aspect of Mutombo's game is his lateral quickness and quick jumping ability. A lot of people view Deke as slow, tall shotblocker but he could move laterally very well.
I came here after his comments today about the 90s being the golden age. I agree. Got me thinking of him vs. Gobert and if he could play that exact role in the NBA.
He completely shut down the paint vs the Sonics in 1994 playoffs. 6.2 BLK in the series, Shawn Kemp limited to 15ppg on 44 TS%... Definitely one of the greatest defensive performances in the playoffs.
What made Dikembe so elite was that he knew he wasn’t going to offer much on offense so instead he honed his skill set to become a pure defensive player/center he is easily in my top five centers of all time because he was one of the first true players in that area besides maybe Rodman that was a pure defensive juggernaut
@@tinniesofficial5439 thats a fair argument, but the only reason i go with mutombo is he was able to get to his spots quite a bit quicker than mark but respect for knowing his real value
I disagree, Hakeem was still better...Hakeem still blocked more at their defensive peaks and had 4x's as many steals as Mutumbo, which lowered his chances to average more, because the ball was stolen instead of shot.....They played the same amount of seasons, and if Hakeem didnt have to carry the offense, and could put all his energy into defense like Mutumbo did, his numbers would be outrageous, it wouldn't be debatable....
One of my favorite defensive players! He reminds me when the zebras/wildebeests cross the water, and they cross into the loving arms (jaws)of the crocodiles, lol.Great rim protector.
Imagine going to hoop strong only to be confronted by that Congolese freak? Brilliant sense of timing combined with a hatred of would be rim attackers.
Mutombo is great offensively and defensively. A solid and phenomenal player. I think Mutombo kind of looks like chadwick boseman. R.I.P. Chadwick Boseman.
@@zhugelianges yeah defense too. This new NBA is all offense and about scoring. But Boston's defense this year was pretty impressive. But back in the day like Shaq said if you going to come in the paint you're going to get touched up. Detroit Pistons also you're going to get that close to the basket it's not going to be an easy bucket. I'm thankfully we have the RUclips and we can watch our grainy old videos from when we're growing up 😂

Yes, he could move so quickly to weak side and shut down quick guys like Shawn Kemp, respect him so much

Cause they only saw him when he was older. But young Dikembe had great lateral quickness for a center and could score some.
Truth..✊🏿🏀

Cant imagine he could shut off Shawn Kemp, and 6.2 Blk shots was just INSANE
Came to pay respects to one of the greatest defenders in the history of the game. RIP Mount Mutombo! 🕊️🙏

Top 5 centers of all time🤣 How tf did you get 4 people to like this comment lol????
Dude, he wasn't even a top 5 Center of the 90's. Give me Olajuwon, Admiral, Shaq, Ewing and Zo over him any day of the week.
One of the greatest rim protectors in basketball history.
Agree with you, bro
And he got left out of the 75th anniversary team... He's more deserving than Melo and AD...
@@mozdabozwtf how
@@mozdaboz just against AD melo kinda deserves it

One of my favorite players of all time. He helped me truly learn to appreciate how important defensive players are to the game.
38 blocked shots in a 5 game series...WOWWW 😲✊🏿😳
RIP Dikembe Mutombo. 58 is no age to go.
I wish I watched him live. Great basketball player, even greater human being. The Son of Congo for good reason
He is such a good person and good basketball player, you are right, man
He had amazing anticipation and the ability not to jump on pump fakes. Goat shot blocker
rip legend
He's one of the greatest shot blockers ever Hakeem, Mutombo, Bill Russell,Tim Duncan all those players
Cant agree more
Don't forget Wilt.
@@nostalgicbliss5547 blocks didn't count when wilt chamberlain was playing

RIP TO THE LEGENDARY DIKEMBE MUTOMBO!!!!!!!
RIP to a defensive force.
He had the Sonics shook in that 1994 1st round series.
What I don’t understand is why they keep trying him 😂😂 if he blocked me 3 times I’m done, I’m just shooting jumpers lol
Lol
R.I.P Dikembe Mutumbo

Hes able to move his feet at 7’2 😮 impressive
Can't imagine he is so tall but so quick...
RIP Leyend😢
Who here after he passed😭
RIR MOUNTAIN
R.I.P
Dikembe might not be the fastest running up and down the court but his ability to jump that high that quick at a moments notice is scary.
Agree with you, bro!
Dikembe mutombo is the best shot blocker of all time the only reason Hakeem has more is because Dikembe was a 25 yr old rookie
When I checked out his stats, this guy's really insane...Avg 6+ blocks in a series...
I personally say Eaton but its a close one
@@tinniesofficial5439 thats a fair argument, but the only reason i go with mutombo is he was able to get to his spots quite a bit quicker than mark but respect for knowing his real value

The only reason Hakeem has the record is because block shots weren't kept as an official stat till 1973
When players like this pass makes me want to find some old games just to play as them and watch some highlights

I love how he constantly keeps blocking shawn kemps shot constantly in this video lol
Lol
Shawn had his nose in to much coke
The finger wag :))))))
Rest in Paradise Giant!
Seems like Kemp all too often went up softly against Mutombo, rarely using his great leaping ability to his advantage.
Detlef Schrempf, haven't heard that name in quite a while.
Rip
4x DPOY RIP big fella
Good
When Deke is there its a no-mans-land.
2nd best shot blocker behind Hakeem olajuwon
Agree with your opinion, bro
i use to love watching good players get blocked..that makes you think different when driving....sad nba today in 2022 smh
He could’ve be the greatest shot blocker ever if he started his career early
Not in my house
Rip. Gill getting rejected
Lol why they doing shaun Kemp like that 🤣

90s basketball versus today! 90% of those blocks would of been fouls today.

What a shame...Today NBA got no defense at all...
Back when men were allowed to play defense.
No, no, no!!!☝🏿
Lol
You would think hi only played the supersonic. Lol
Did he every play any other teams i watched 5 mins and he only played against the Supersonics
He average like 7 blocks that series thats why
Thanks for the explanation!
I'm pretty sure majority of these clips are in the playoffs against the SuperSonics

Made a living doing nothing but blocking shots.
Lol love your wordings bro!!
If he played today, he'd be getting Gobert money.
@@nostalgicbliss5547 Yet he is much better than Gobert...
Also being a very good rebounder
He can block shots but can't grab for rebound?
He averaged 10.3 boards for his career...do your research
Led the league in rebounds twice and averaged 10.3 for his entire career...
This is what a Big Man is supposed to do and not shoot 3s.
Thanks for your comment, bro!
Mutombo defense is so great. One of the best.
Btw, not to shoot 3s👍😂
