His general instincts are unique. He a lot of times gets burned by lower-tier players. It's LITERALLY impossible for this guy to be screened, he has a lot of moves to avoid being screened. I've been watching the grizz basically since he first arrived to memphis from the celts. And I've seen him spin to avoid screens, follow the offensive player's path, and just straight up push his way through. It's really hard to explain what makes him so unique as a defender but the best way to put it is... Dropping 30 pts doesn't excite him...if he achieved the record of forced turnovers in a game, that would excite him. He's an NBA player only because he can defend anyone 1-4
Ive watched ALL generations of this game... Six all defense teams and stats don’t tell the whole story of Tony Allen’s impact. He could’ve won DPOY. Every player that had to face him in that era said he was the best defender ever.
Greatest defender ever is a huge exageration and that's coming from a Tony Allen fan. When it comes to on ball defense, he's the best I've seen at his position, but that's not the same as being the best defender ever. Guys like Hakeem and David Robinson had bigger defensive impacts due to being rim protectors who could also spread the floor. Guys like that combined great on ball defense with tons of blocks, rim protection and even getting 2+ steals per game.
@@greyk610 That makes no sense. They were bigger but also did a lot more. In terms of being a better overall defender at his position, Jordan was also ahead of Allen. Plus, this is not a pound for pound discussion, otherwise guys like Iverson would be in the Goat debate, it's simply about who had more defensive impact and those are the big man. That doesn't mean I'd pick Ewing over Rodman, but there are many factors at hand.
Tony Allen was guarding these players like a shutdown corner!! Sometimes they couldn't throw the ball over there! He gets off on defense making players shot 9 -27, or 4-21, they might get 20 or more but the have to shoot 10-32 to get it . First Team All Defense!!!
That steal on Klay Thompson was super aggressive and clean no foul. Only basketball players will appreciate how difficult that is to do without fouling
