- Jocko Willink, a former Navy SEAL commander, host of the "Jocko Podcast," and the author of "Discipline Equals Freedom: Field Manual," explains how he works out to maintain his physique. Following is a full transcript of the video.
Jocko Willink: I've pretty much broken down my workouts into four broad spectrums of working out. I'm going to pull on one day, I'm going to push on another day, I'm going to lift on the next day, and I'm going to squat on the final day the fourth day. And I just rotate those things through.
And they're all based fundamentally on some pretty basic exercises. For pull, it's based on pull-ups. Doing pull-ups. And you all you need to do pull-ups is a set of rings or a pull-up bar and you can handle that workout. The push is based on push-ups and dips, and all the exercises that are associated with those types of movements. The lifts, for me, are lifting things from the ground over my head. And then finally, squat is based on squatting, and there's all different kinds of varieties of squats you can do. And I also include in that sprinting and overhead squats, back squats, front squats - all those things get incorporated in when I'm working a leg day.
On top of those four, on a regular basis, I want to train my, my metabolic conditioning. So, I want to do sprinting and running and get my heart rate up for very intense short periods of time. And then on top of that I do "gut" exercises, which is what we call in the SEAL teams when you're working your "core," is the trendy term to call it, or sometimes you hear it referred to as abs. But I don't like those terms. We call it gut. Get some.

He looks like he had to be convinced to wear a suit for the video
Aubree Gonzalez lol
you're too much xD
Aubree Gonzalez > He looks like a Navy SEAL Tito Ortiz.
He don’t like suits. He likes jungle boots and camies!
To be fair, suits are not only impractical, uncomfortable (even expensive ones that have been indivudually tailored are relatively uncomfortable) old fashioned looking and messy, but are a sign of how easily people are brainwashed.
If a woman turned up for a date dressed like women did in 1918, wouldn't you be a bit freaked out? In essence, the modern incarnation of the suit has barely changed since then.
People used to believe that powdered wigs looked good, that's how easily people are brainwashed, and to what extent!
You wouldn't expect a Navy Seal to be easily brainwashed, would you? I, personally, would expect them to be able to think for themselves!
This guy's got muscles on his eyeballs
Technically we all do...
@@nicholasbraganca5710yes thank you technically we all have abs and bicep veins too
@@MainMan37x Technically you both are correct but Nicolas Braganca is the one who wants attention.
Everyone have muscles on their eyeballs, but Jocko can erase you with just those muscles
@@metinotje Technically you made that comment for attention.
I admire the extremely high levels of discipline this man has. Not everyone wakes up at 4 am everyday & trains!
He only wakes up that earlier because he goes to sleep earlier, it’s really not that hard 😂
@@w7n424 do it
@@felixk1843 I actually do it when I do go to sleep really early, like he said it’s all about going to sleep early. I’m sure that guy don’t go to sleep at 1am 2am and wake up at 4.
@@Import_success 4am he wake up?
Nightshift us over at 6am , biking home 6 miles, go with the dog , shower ,7:30am I go to bad.
Would love seeing someone talking about training ,sleep/recovery and eat routine if they aren’t in time comfort zone.
@@br0leg274 EXACTLYYYY MAN, thank you these guys think, those ex- navy seals, are waking up at 4am while going to sleep at the same time they do. No these guys go to sleep early
starting now, I will call abs, guts
Haha. My thoughts exactly!
You better or jocko will find you
Roger that
We call it gut, get some. Haha, cool guy. Very aggressive speaking, almost feels like his suggestions are a command.
Check out his channel. It's called Jocko podcast.
Pain is weakness leaving your body.
DroidSage Good point Xd
It could be a chronic injury.
Anal pain
When I convince my girlfriend to do anal I just tell her it's weakness leaving her body
Unless it's chest pain. Call 911 for that shit.
It's my exams tomorrow and i dont know why am i watching this!
meet jain MINE TOO!!😰😰😰
meet jain The quickest way to lose interest in a topic is to make it a structured learning exercise. I could put an entire class to sleep in about an hour lecturing on Linear Systems or Circuits and Electronics Theory.
I fell you me too its Calculus 2
meet jain Good Luck on your exams!
Because it's only 1:45 ...
This guy also has a podcast, it's about leadership and other topics, I love it.
Yeah I like the seals more for there leadership lesson than workout lessons lol
You can keep the run till you puke routine
@@Yowzbrrkylll I recently started doing the waking up at 4:30 thing, and someone asked me incredulously, how I could wake up at 4:30 and I just responded I go to bed at 9:30, and that just wasn't the answer they were expecting, but it is that easy.
@@molassio1989 awesome. How effective is it for you? What changes do you notice? Do you advise it for everyone?
@@Yowzbrrkylll I do it also and I've noticed that I have a lot more energy through the day and I feel really good, plus waking up at 4:30 is like having the world just for you because no one else wakes up that early. I would say that the only way to know if doing that fits you is testing it, go to sleep and wake up always at the same hour also.
@@Yowzbrrkylll an increase of time gained for individual needs (no one is up at this time). And the ease of going to bed later on in the day when coupled with exercise.
But the main gain: discipline.

Hello, my name is Chocolate Willing 😂
Bro holy hell this is gold
I’m Chocolate Willing too.
To stay in a squared shape my god that’s the most rectangular head I’ve ever seen
Looks like a mighty bean 😂
I got mad respect for the Navy Seals!!👏 Their workout regimen is a beast!
Why not just change your channel name to Seal Insider?
I like what he said Pull, push, lift and squat. I must be able to pull my body up that is why i do pull up on the bar; and i must be able also to push my body up, like from a man hole, so i do dip and push up, especially dip, I used table of equal height; i do squat jump so that i can train my legs to lift me jump; and i lift from the ground light weights so that i can carry with my arms a standard pale full of water. To me what he said are functional exercises especially for those who have not enough time to do various exercises, focus on priorities which i can use in my everyday work.
Thanks very much jocko willink. I'm looking forward to improving my gut workouts too. Peace
And he is a BJJ black belt and also trains a lot there. Respect Jocko!
It is because of men like him that we all sleep easy at night with our families. Thank you Mr.Willink!
WIFE: "Honey, wake up. Were you having a nightmare?" ME: "Jocko was coming to get me"
Basic, simple and powerfully explained. Well put your excellent message in such short time.👍👍
Incredible. Thank you!!
And I momentarily thought this was a operation debrief!!😁😁😁 The guy is awesome!! I like the way he speaks....
Jocko, I love your books man, very humble in character.
damn the ending is so bad ass! we call it gut, get some! :D
He looks like Kane’s little brother. But 100 times scarier.
Sir! Yes, Sir!
Sir sandwich
Fuck exams 😂 rather watch a navy seal tell me what he used to do
I don't know how much this helps my day to day overall health, but anytime I see a "staircase" of almost any type I will either climb those steps 2 or 3 steps at a time. I have been doing this just about every single day of the year for the last 30 years or so (I'm now 54 years old) and when I was working at each of my last 2 jobs (they lasted almost 17 years combined) I would sometimes need to climb a staircase more than 10 times a day during my shifts.
If I was to take about 1 month to train for it I could POSSIBLY climb the staircase inside the Washington Monument in Washington DC in less than 3 minutes.........?????
Better to climb each step and embrace the suck
Hype!!
"GET SOME!" 🔥
This is the Business Insider I like. Not the Buzzfeed stuff they've been putting out lately.
Good for them!
Bravoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, Jocko !....
🙂
From Brussels, with love...
Jocko is da man
We call it gut, hey some 😂😂 I like this guy
I've been looking for material on working out when I get ready to do that.
The face.. the way he speaks..... The tone he voices.... Cool ???
Makes sense, doing the basics correctly usually yields the best results. No need for fancy/trendy bs
Thank you 😊🍻👍
Okay so its basically a Push-Pull-Leg Workout with some additional High intensity Cardio type workout-plan… nothing to crazy. I guess it just sounds fancier when a former Navy-Seal talks explains… 😂
Just goes to show that the basics work
I'm going to *PULL* one day, I'm going to *PUSH* one day, I'm going to *LIFT* one day, and I'm going to *SQUAT* one day
*I take no regrets*
Get some. I felt that.
This dude looks like he wakes up the alarm clock
Probably the most badass American I've seen in a while
I knew this would be good once i saw jocco, his podcast is bad ass and always awesome on the joe rogan pod cast.
Good evening Echo
So six things:
-push
-pull
-lift
-squat
-metabolic conditioning
-core
yeah, but he did not add bjj and mental prep, which I am sure he is still doing
Yass
No not abs ..gut
@@annawilson3824 GUT!!!
It's gut!
It’s always been a gut bc when u stop working out it comes to haunt
Nice tie
"Former Navy Seal" in the video title... Me automatically "is it Jocko?" Yup, it's Jocko 😂
So push day, pull day, heavy day, squat day, interval training and don't forget core. Seems like consistency it the secret.
GUT!!!
Hello Jocko, I have been preaching this very same doctrine, the problem is when you encounter "Ego's" that just have to prove to thier companions that they are hard cases. I have disciplined myself into ignoring all verbal attacks and walking or running too. I was being chased by a large group od younger Men ,approx 20 in number. I got tired of running and stopped, turned on my heels and at the top of my lungs screamed " F¥@€ off"..and they actually stopped , prompted by thier group leader they turned and walked back into the woods. That was after they had done a bit of damage though. Maybe because I was solo it looked cowardly 20 V 1?
Ma che cosa cazzo ho appena letto? :'D
Good evening Echo.
Jon R this made me laugh because I read it in his voice 😂😂😂😂😂
I m gonna do these 4 every day
All of these *Navy SEAL* videos are great recruiting videos to help increase the *UNDEZ* population in the Navy.... 😂
How the hell did you not mention deadlifts Jocko?!? We all know you can deadlift over 8 THOUSAND POUNDS with a cup of that Jocko white tea! GET SOME!
Gadnuk Breaker of Worlds he said lift
PAY ATTENTION
Tu Papi He didn’t specifically mention DEADLIFTS and he mentions them on his podcast all the time, dipshit. I think you’re the one who needs to pay attention.
Gadnuk Breaker of Worlds thats why he said BROAD/GENERAL, & he said lift. What do you do when you deadlift? LIFT stfu witcho ugly ass
The Doom Marine actually, dude, he said lift things off the ground and overhead. Sounds like a deadlift into an ovh press kinda thing. Maybe pay some attention next time.
Yeah, a deadlift into an overhead press isn't a thing, dude. You're describing a clean and press. Maybe try going to a gym sometime. You might learn a thing or two.
Never would have guessed this guy was into working out.
Standing by to GET SOME....
