  • Greg - Your Car Angel- talks about the problems in each generation of the Honda CRV. Air Conditioner failure (A/C problems) in the 2nd generation which ran between 2002-2006. Suspension issues in the 3rd generation which ran between 2007-2011, including sway bar links and weak struts. The 4th generation which ran between 2012-2016 had issues with vibration in the drivers seat and steering wheel and the finally the 5th generation with oil dilution issues on the 1.5 liter turbo engine in the Honda EX and EXL models.

    Got a 1998 CR-V with 417,000 miles. Still running perfectly. These cars are so well built.

    We bought a very low mileage 2008 in 2010 to pull behind our motorhome. The motorhome is history. The Honda is still going strong as our daily (only) driver. It’s the best car I’ve ever owned. Regular oil and filter changes and one set of tires have been the only maintenance needed. It’s still under 100K miles. Since I’m 76, it’s looking like the CR-V will outlast me.

    I love my 2011 CRV and it's still going strong. Keeping it for as long as humanly possible. I think we CRV owners are a pretty loyal bunch!

      @@makeyourmindbleed It's been a great one but just like any other car you get what you put into it. I would insist on seeing the service records for it. If they can't produce them I would keep looking.

      @@makeyourmindbleed I've only had my 2011 for ~8 months so far but I've been very happy with my purchase so far. Runs well with ~140k miles. It's a little rough on bumps as SUVs tend to be but very comfortable overall.
      And the rubber trim comment on the video is very accurate. The trim is coming up on the edges on several windows.

      This is why I’m walking away from Honda. They don’t honor their warranty anymore. I bought a brand new hr-v that gave me too many issues, some of which they wouldn’t fix properly.
      They still make good products but the company has become too greedy. And it shows in their customer service.

      We have a 99 with 120k and a 5 speed. Unfortunately hail got it today! Still runs great though.

      I have a '99 also with 338,000 on it. Still my daily driver. The only major issue was I needed a valve job. The owner's manual states to adjust the valve lash at 100,000 miles. the interval is actually about 30,000 miles. Only the U.S. manual says 100,000 miles, the rest say 30,000. Honda would not fix it, but they did issue a TSB sometime in the 2000's. Too late for me. The symptoms usually begin as a check engine light that reveals misfires in one or more cylinders, along with a rough idle. I ended up with 2 burned exhaust valves. The root cause (I found out later) was soft valve seats which allowed the lash to diminish gradually over time. My engine is the 2.0L 4-cyl. non-vtec B20Z. Other than that, it's been a good vehicle.

      I also have a 1999 crv it has 121,000 on it. Running strong, although I feel I'm pressing my luck since I haven't had the Timing belt replaced.

    Still driving my 1997 CR-V, haven't even had to change a single light bulb. The car has been nothing short of amazing.

      @@slugo915I just bought an 08 crv with 120m on it. I have owned it about 4 months.
      I have the sticking locks that are loud when then lock and unlock. I also had to replace a slow leaking power steering hose. I was told by a lot of people that these are really reliable cars. I hope that’s true because I want this car to last for a good long while.

      From my research it looks like the 2005-2006 are the best reliable years for the CRVs. I owned a 2001 years ago and it was a great reliable car.
      I’m hoping this car is the same 🤞

      My 2011 CRV which has over 300,000 miles on it, has strut and trim issues as well. The back tires wear on the inside leading to cupping. I've tried to have it fixed but there is still a bit of an angle on them. Other than that, it's been an almost perfect car other than the driver window just stopped working. The engine sounds like it could reach 500,000 or much more.

    209,000 miles on my 3rd generation 2009 LX and going strong. Basically trouble free. Engine and transmission are rock solid smooth and amazing. Never had the valves adjusted. As others have noted, it just keeps going. At 200,000 I replaced all the shocks/struts with new Honda OEM parts. The ride had gotten a bit floaty and the new struts brought back the old taut but comfortable feel and tight handling. I am expecting it will hit 300,000 easy. It is just been an amazing vehicle.

      My 2010 CRV just passed 320,000 miles. Changed plugs once, changed alternator once, replaced ac blower motor once, replaced 4 struts and shocks, and I've faithfully changed the oil every 9,000 miles. The ac compressor was permanently removed about 6 months ago. Now takes 56" serpentine belt. Numerous tires replaced and I take it w/dog to the park every day and we go fishing at least once a week. I think the danged car will outlive me tbh.

      @@lionheart93 218,908 miles. Still rock solid, trouble free, smooth and quiet engine. Same with the transmission. It really likes the hot weather we are having in the North East right now. I was going to baby it and just use it around town but I've changed my mind. I have a light weight aluminium motorcycle trailer and a light weight 400lb motorcycle. I'm planning on trailering the bike down to North Carolina for some nice riding sometime this summer.

    Thank you for this video! My uncle is graciously giving me his 2014 LX AWD next month! It has 80,000 miles on it and he takes such meticulous care of his cars. I know I will get longevity out of it and I’m thrilled. I’ve always driven beaters that are 15+ years old. This will be the newest car I’ve ever owned.

    I work at a mechanic workshop in Australia. Every single RD/RE CRV we service has developed oil leaks from the VVT spool valve. You can replace the seal but it will start leaking again eventually. Replace the whole valve assembly to start with is my advice and while you’re at it, do the valve cover gasket and oil filter housing seal.

    I own a 2005 SE and have been quite happy with it. Getting close to 160,000 miles and still runs and looks great! I never knew about the a/c issue though.

      @PC Gaming Championship Group apparently you have never owned a Honda, most of their cars are super reliable, I currently drive a Acura TL 2004 model with 273k miles and drives like a new car.. I had other Honda's with north of 300k miles also In the past.

    Have a 2002 CRV. A/C did implode resulting in a 1500.00 repair bill. Other than that and a leaky valve cover gasket, it has been a GREAT vehicle. Currently has 163k miles and is running STRONG!

    Thank you so so much. There are great mechanics and there are bad mechanics and no one likes to hear the words "we cannot find anything wrong" or " we cannot duplicate the problem". No one likes to take a car to the shop that is not making a noise until after it returns from the shop. I would like to get a newer Honda CRV and your video is very valuable. A friend has a 2000 CRV 2WD with 180,000 miles. One mechanic will say it needs these, another will say something else. I thought it needed shocks/struts but the mechanic said those were ok but it needed motor mounts. The car did not have a severely bad ride and tire wear was normal. My friend replaced all three mounts and now the car sways and nose dives like a boat and it was not doing that before the mount repair. We got wheel alignment 2 wheels only (?) and tie rod ends and it is better but still 90% boat sway especially when hitting bumps. They now say it needs ball joints and upper control arms and the repair list will go on and on for deep pockets. Now they want to do the struts and shocks but I am not sure that will help. It drives like the frame has completely shifted on the car. Help! Help! Every mechanic says something different.

    2010 with 165000 miles and drives like the day I drove it off the lot new. I replaced struts at 120,000 miles. Rubber window seals not a problem and we live in the desert. Yes, the locking mechanism is a problem. I had to replace door actuator. Great video. Really good reliable car.

    THANK YOU! You ARE AN ANGEL. Purchased a USED 2008 CRV in Oct. 2017. You nailed the Door Auto- Lock - Actuator Psycho Locking problem-Locked myself out 2x (bought a dummy key from locksmith $5.). Luckily when I searched online, a Class-Action Suit FORCED Honda to fix this-Value $300-400-did this March 2018-Thank God!!! Also you nailed the Strut EARLY wear out - Front replaced in March 2019, rear is leaking and will do in 2020 April lw. Had a Rt. Front axle wear out, replaced in 2018 and again same one in 2019 (now beginning to HATE HONDA- formerly had a 1989 Civic 113K miles great car). You nailed the window black weather stripping deteriorating. Wiper water pump went out 2019! Mileage now 146,650 LOUD ROAD NOISE!!!! I pray my next car is a TOYOTA!

    We had a 2006 CRV and absolutely loved it. However, around 100k, we did have the AC go out like he mentioned. Then around 119k, we had a major electrical issue that no one, including the Honda dealership, could figure out and fix. We needed a minivan at that point anyway and ended up trading it in. I still love the CRV...just wish it hadn't had those problems.

    You nailed the issues on the third generation CRV. I have a 2010. The door locks go click click, click click. I've spent $720 fixing them...and they still do it. I'm the original owner and the problem showed up at about 90,000. I replaced the struts - thanks for the tip on the other suspension issue. I'll have a look at that. Despite all this, this is the best car I have owned as far as quality goes. It has 150,000 miles on it and it has no squeaks, no rattles, everything still works and it rides as smooth as the day I took it off the lot. One more thing. You are right about being tall and owning this car. I am 6'3" and even on long drives the car is comfortable. Thanks for the video.

      @@kimbrewsaugh6216 You can turn off the auto-locking feature. it's detailed in the owner's manual. If they are already broken, you'll need to get them replaced, but you can reduce further damage by turning the auto-lock feature off. Sorry, I know I'm late to the party.

    Definitely agree with struts and suspension issues, actuators, and the weatherization rubber. I had a used 2008. I owned it for 5 years.

    I bought my 2006 CR-V EX-L new, currently has 259K miles. The A/C issue you described happened to me at approximately 85K miles, yes, I had the dealer replace the entire A/C system at an approximate cost of $1,900.00. Dealer told me the issue was a lack of oil in the compressor and recommended having an oil charge added to A/C system every 100K miles, I never added a charge and haven’t suffered any new A/C system failures. Since I’ve reached 250K miles, I have to replace the alternator and water pump. This car has been the most trouble free and cost effective vehicle I’ve owned in the past 38 years.

      Just bought one top of the line a Touring fully loaded. Not sure why they are so scarce. Can’t find them in the dealerships it’s like looking for a pin in a haystack. Car drives fine, it’s safe and secure. No need to use the key to open and even lock to prevent breaking in. So far so good.

    I bought a used 2003 Honda CRV a couple of years ago. I loved that vehicle but spent A LOT of money on it in repairs in the 6 years I owned it. All of the repairs were in the $1,000+ range, including a new a/c system! it had 139,000 miles on it when I bought it. I just traded it in for a 2011 Honda CRV. I wish they still had the sportier design, but I still love it. I will keep an eye on everything you mentioned. I had my mechanic check it out before I purchased it and the struts were leaking and the dealer fixed them. Thank you!

    We have 6 Hondas on our driveway. Among them we have a 2007 CRV and a 2014 CRV. Both have been reliable with regular maintenance and the odd problem easily repaired. These two generations are solid choices. However in 2015, things changed, and in my opinion not for the good. The introduction of the CVT transmission in 2015 was done to decrease the cost of manufacture, however the long term reliability of them is still in question. The other problem is with the direct injection introduced in 2015. This is a not problem initially, however over time, the intact valves become dirty and coated with carbon, causing the combustion process to get affected, resulting in decreased gas mileage, idling issues, reduced efficiency. The cost to clean the intake valves is expensive and complicated, and the emphasis is on complicated. Mechanics are not prefect, and when ever you require a complicated service, you open the door to mistakes being made (costly ones!). If Honda reverts back to port injection, this problem is solved. In Honda's newer turbo models, the issues of direct injection is amplified. If Honda did like Toyota and designed both port and direct injection on the same engine, lots of these issues would be resolved. It's a matter of cost and design. Till they fix this, I cannot recommend a Honda that has only a direct injection (turbo is not the problem) and I'm concerned with the CVT transmissions being not a good choice as well.

      ​@jshepard152 Almost all newer cars have cvt. Unless you have great credit, its hard to get a newer car without one for leas than 40-50k new

    I have a 2007 crv ex 120k miles, bought it new, LOVE IT. I did have a problem with rear passenger door actuator. Struts just got replaced also tie bar replaced. Runs great very peppy and tight steering. Not loud. Thanks for a great video

      Our 2003 has 110K kms (65K miles?) and the AC is weak. I had it refilled and was much better. Too much work and expense to make it like new again. Otherwise nothing at all had to be repaired.

    Great video! My 2014 CRV, now at 92,900 km / 57,700 miles, is all right, but compared to the Toyotas I have driven, not great either. It needed brake work after less than 3 years. The remote lock/unlock failed on one of the keys (not a battery issue). There is a leaking axle. The air conditioning failed a few months ago. Headlights burn out frequently. The rear wiper arm doesn't work anymore. I am hoping that after the latest round of repairs and replacements, things will settle down.

    Thanks Greg. Just test drove a 2009 EX and the locking mechanism kept locking and locking it was so annoying. The dealer tried to tell me that a new battery would fix it. Glad I watched your video!

      They can be reprogrammed to not lock while driving. There are instructionals online that explain how to do it.

    2004 CR-V here... no issues with the AC whatsoever. 15 years later the heat and air still work perfectly... along with everything else lol. 151k miles and rolling!

    One issue I didn't see brought up is the frequency of oil changes that the car needs to have. Been informed by lead Honda tech not to let it drop below 30% on oil percentage to keep a screen in the engine clean to avoid future issues with service life.

    Good video Greg. Thank you. I have a 2007 CRV and as you mention, the door locks are a big problem (is there a way to just make the door locks manual? - perhaps taking out the door lock fuse?). Removing and re-installing a starter is also pretty challenging.

    My parents bought a new 2006 CRV EX-L in October of 2005 days before I was born we still have it to this day we have replaced the whole ac system so it’s great! It’s over 210,000 miles! Great car!

    Have wanted to purchase a 2013-2014 LE-X and this has been extremely helpful. Just wish we could have channels like yours in our region - Southern Africa. Previously owned a 2005 X Trail 2.2L diesel that I bought second hand. Worked well for a year then had to replace parts which cost more than the car itself.

    Great explanation overall but I’d like to expand on the 3rd generation door lock issues. I had an 08 LX and around 110k miles, the rear passenger door lock actuator failed, leaving it stuck between lock/unlock and couldn’t be adjusted manually. That triggered an auto-lock for all 5 doors, and left it either unresponsive to the remote or would unlock and immediately re-lock. Key entry was difficult because 1) only the driver door was equipped and 2) the auto-lock was always engaged making it difficult to turn the key to unlock, and often didn’t work at all. Plus, the remote key fob isn’t designed for that and would easily break. I had two babies in car seats making this situation incredibly dangerous. I had to roll all the windows down before exiting just to make sure I could get my kids out. My choices were to get it fixed ($2000+) or disable the locks by removing the door panel and unplugging the locks, making it impossible to secure my vehicle which is what I did. The rear lift gate wouldn’t unlock at all. Honda was no help at all, probably because it was a widespread problem and should have been subject to a recall. I even contacted CPSC about it. It was 10k past the warranty window. So... if you’re test driving a 3rd generation CR-V, make sure to put those locks to work or be handy enough to know how to replace them.

    Bought my daughter a 2003 with 95k in 2009 for college,she always had the defrost on and of course smoked the a/c after 4yrs but never had an issue and now I drive it 2020 with 170k (still no a/c) as my haul stuff get to work vehicle and love it!

    Greg - We just bought a 2016 CR-V EX-L with only 27,000 miles on it today. We got a reasonable price and a 60mo/100,000 mi warranty from a reputable national dealer. Thanks for making such thorough information available. We had three options, a 2015, the 2016 we bought, and a 2017 with the turbo. Based on this video, we didn’t even have to seriously consider the other two cars. You really are our car angel!

      Just repair it... I pay $200/ month for my subaru payment plus another almost 200 for insurance. So in 5 month I spend 2 grand on just driving the car, not to mention what I'll need in repairs later. Bottom line just fix it. My husband has a honda and it's very reliable.

    Greg, Always a pleasure to listen to your advice! I own 2009 Honda Accord, 2009 civic and 2017 odyssey. My sway bar went at 100,000 but no big deal. The 2.4 in the accord and the 1.8 in the Civic have been bullet proof! Could you move up the ladder and rate newer Accords?
