    Our Gen 4 CRV 2012 almost 130,000 kms already replaced the annoying actuator. Noticed some cracks on the rubber holding the windshield. Bought and put some silicon on it asa remedy.
    I also have a Gen 1 CRV aka RD1. Still using it for 24 yrs. Almost 230,000 kms on the odometer. A keeper since there a lot of available parts (surplus) here in Manila Philippines.

    Fairly well covered
    Bought a 2012 CRV with intermittent rattle from VVT when cold, around 120,000km
    Ended getting a timing chain kit & actuator for around $750
    Still very slight 2 sec rattle 1 out of 10 cold starts so will live with it
    Have changed auto fluid (5 speed) once when we got it but will try your flush recommendation as it does occasionally hard shift
    Starter hasn’t missed a beat
    Lovely car

    This is an issue that we have had with our 2014. At 130,000 we replaced the VVTA for the 2nd time, and I had a new tensioner put in two. I am not happy that they can't find a part that works permanently, but I would never buy a 2017 CR-V, or newer. I despise Turbo Charged engines, so I would rather deal with this ever 4-5 years. Only replaced an CV shaft, and that is it. If some company that makes OEM racing parts would come up with a VVTA that permanently solved the problem, I would be thrilled. Keep your ticking time bomb Turbo-4, Honda.

    • @caseyalexander2244
      @caseyalexander2244 Год назад

      You only need to replace a spring inside the VTC actuator, it's not a 'VVTA'. The spring is the first and easiest thing to start with, but doesn't always solve the problem. The VTC actuator, timing chain tensioner, and the timing chain itself can cause the rattle on cold start in any combination of the three separately or together.

      Hi Scott. At the moment I'm considering a purchase of CR-V (between some other brands, cherry picked models), but, since we are in Europe, we get either a 1.5 turbo engine, or NA 2.0 i-VTEC. Now I liket o keep things simple, so I'm aiming for front-wheel drive, 2.0 engine, and hope that it will serve me well. Grateful if you have any thoughts to share. Cheers.

  • @ExtremeRecluse
    @ExtremeRecluse Год назад +3

    The VTC actuator starts with low oil levels. The burning oil will cause rapid reduction in oil levels which cause lack of lubrication of the timing chain. This will cause the timing chain to stretch. The oil burning is tthe issue. All Honda owners should check their engine oil level every week to prevent these problems. Honda is about to screw 1000s of loyal customers just like Toyota had done with the frame rot issue.

      This engines need oil change at 6k miles to work long and properly. All chain driven engines needs such oil service interval. It's not the actuator it's the end user which have no idea about cars and engines and then they cry what went wrong.

    • @johnfrakes4746
      @johnfrakes4746 Год назад +2

      @@thaothao8324 Per Robert H- There have not been any recalls on the VTC actuator in the 2014 Honda CR-V. The actuator is known to be defective, but Honda has refused to fix or recall the issue. A bad actuator will cause the engine to rattle loudly for about 2 seconds when starting up, especially during colder outside temperatures. You can diagnose this by letting the car sit for about 6 hours to allow the oil in the VTC system drain, listen to the engine right after starting it for a loud rattle. If it is rattling, the VTC actuator needs to be replaced. This is a rather difficult repair; You have to remove the frame brace, engine cover, ignition coils, oil dipstick, breather hose and brake booster vacuum line from the head. Then the timing chain and camshaft has to be removed. The VTC actuator is located on the end of the camshaft.
      Rattle is understatement! Mine, one could hear a block away.

    You should never do a transmission FLUSH (not to be confused with service, which you just drain old fluid and replace it) on a car that's used and never had a transmission service. You will dislodge metal shavings and they will settle in the nooks and crannies and will clog them. You WILL have transmission problems. Matter of fact, it might stop working altogether.

    • @AutoMotivate
      @AutoMotivate  Год назад +1

      My 1999 Astro van with 200k miles says otherwise. The trans oil probably has never been replaced. If it is a CVT then doing a couple flushes back to back will prevent the system from clogging. For a standard Transmission, it is a must to replace the filter as well. Furthermore, there is record of owner after owner doing the flushed and getting good results. I have yet to see or hear the ladder.

    • @worldpeace5853
      @worldpeace5853 Год назад +1

      I sometimes feel this is one way of making money by forcing customers to change transmission fluid when it actually isn’t required. My 2012 ML350’s recommendations is 70K miles but I doubt how many will actually follow the routine. As long as you don’t abuse the transmission I think it should be good but then euro manufacturers have to upkeep the costs for their unnecessary hifi things that they install when they themselves don’t know what it takes to keep the vehicle good to last for a while. Bottom line….recommend changes to make more money for no reason!!!!

    • @AutoMotivate
      @AutoMotivate  Год назад +3

      @@worldpeace5853 CVTs should for sure be replaced. Same with auto. Oil wears down over time, it’s a fact. When that happens, components go bad. The sentiment “you should never replace you oil” is flawed and is said by folks who don’t replace their oil filter as well.
