  • On September 2nd, 1945, Japan officially surrendered to the US and the Allied Forces. The Second World War brought with it poverty and hardships for the population of Japan, which also included the Yakuza. The Japanese Mafia was on the brink of extinction, when they found a new lifeline, with the emergence of Black Markets all across Japan. This, combined with a little bit of help from certain people inside the occupation government, led by General MacArthur, ensured the rebirth of Japan’s infamous crime groups.

From what I've seen, even in the last 20-30 years or so. It's like I'm looking at a completely different people. Especially seeing all this about gangs, war and so on makes it feel surreal, even though I had knowledge about it.

Belonging to a criminal org is not illegal in Japan, so it is interesting how accessible and public Yakuza have become. I remember walking in Shinjuku and seeing them everywhere, along with their Nigerian co workers. Completely different vibe than here in North America.

It would be more accurate to say the occupation forces didn't want any form of communism even if elected and would accept an end to democracy in preference to communist electoral success.

Oh yeah this video was before i started putting my sources in the description haha apologies for that. My first few videos were almost completely based on a book called "Yakuza: Japan's Criminal Underworld" by David E. Kaplan. It's pretty much the ultimate source for Yakuza history with info being so incredibly rare online. Hope that helps!

some interesting books relating to your period, in no particular order: Japan Diary - Mark Gayn. Confessions of a Yakuza - Saga Jun'ichi. Tōkyō Underworld - Robert Whiting. Yakuza - David E Kaplan & lec Dubro. The Tattooed Men - Florence Rome. Inventing Japan - Ian Buruma. some of these are 'about' the Yakuza, others about the era, the socio-cultura background and like that......

The reason why Japan still has yakuza and ultra-nationalists to this day is because the US spared and leveraged it. It's basically the same as the US did in the Middle East. Most people don't care about this fact, and it bugs me often. It is a delight to have a rare outlet here to spread the less-known dark side of history.

The meaning of 三国人(Sangokujin) is incorrect. 三国人 originates from the English word "third nationals", which the GHQ used to describe, the citizens that not Japanese nor of an allied country. It was used to describe people of former Japanese colonies who lived in Japan, the 朝鮮人(Chosenjin/Koreans), and the 台湾人(Taiwanjin/Taiwanese). Because they were from former Japanese colonies they weren't legally considered as foreigner, but because Japanese colonies got independent they were no longer considered as Japanese, so they were considered as "the third people".

Would you consider doing a video on biker gangs and the new yakuza (they have a different name, but they dress in like normal clothes and no tattoos) basically it’s like the yakuza meets a biker gang (cause they get specifically targeted now just by how they look, so new age gangster apparently dress as normal as possible to not make them stand out in the eyes of the law but do as much fighting as the yakuza and biker gangs

Absolutely! For some criminals, there's a reason for why they chose that path. The Sangokujin really had a tough time during and after the war so their frustrations are relatable in a way, it's unfortunate that it has to result in violence in many cases though
