  • The story of Nick Zappetti is a story about the Japanese black markets, a short stint in pro wrestling, fake banks, stolen gems, imprisonment, Japan’s first pizza restaurant, countless lawsuits, some of the country’s most powerful Yakuza members and a divorce gone really, really bad.
Today, we take a look at how Zappetti managed to make it from a poor neighborhood in East Harlem, New York to becoming the richest foreigner in all of Japan.
This is the story of Nick Zappetti, the “King of Roppongi”!

Fun (?) fact: Nick's ancestral home, Calabria, has just as rich a history of crime as Sicily. The Calabrian Mafia, called 'Ndrangheta, is hundreds of years old and has a reminiscent but different structure to the Sicilian Cosa Nostra. Built strictly on blood ties, the infiltration and study of the organization have proven difficult. Furthermore, unlike the Cosa Nostra, they've made maximum effort to stay out of the limelight and avoid public conflict with the law. As a result, they've displaced the Cosa Nostra as Italy's strongest criminal organization despite remaining largely unknown outside of Calabria. Estimates show that the organization accounts for at least 3% of Italy's ENTIRE GDP.

That IS interesting, I am fascinated by the Italian mafia as well. If it wasn't too far outside of my niche, I'd probably be making videos about them as well

Funnily enough, there was actually a movie about Zappetti in the works about 15 years ago, directed by Martin Scorsese! Seems like they never made it past the planning stages but I really hope we will get to see that movie eventually 🥲
Thanks for watching and commenting my friend, much appreciated 😁

His story is pretty cool! He was featured as a sports hero in an old anime Karate Baka Ichidai. Mas Oyama (founder of Kyokushinkai Karate) is a Korean transplant like Rikidozen that became Japanese. There has been some controversy of Oyama's Yakuza connection too. The Korean connection in the Yakuza. Hmmmm.......

Interesting video on Nicola Pizza and Mr. Zappetti. Speaking of which in terms of entertainment aspect is concern, for ANIKI, as an old school pro wrestling fan, you should do a video of Japan's Founding Fathers of Pro Wrestling such as Rikidouzan and among other Japanese pro wrestling pioneers. Best wishes from Southern California!!

I find it strange how a lot of the people you talk about don't even have a Wikipedia page written about them. Despite being so powerful, these people are obscure figures outside of Japan. Some are probably even obscure in Japan these days as their names have been forgotten over the years.

Great story but by foreign you seem to mean exclusively American. Because there are even richer and more successful Zainichi Koreans (在日韓国), who are foreign citizens residing in Japan. For example, Masayoshi Son a billionaire technology entrepreneur and third-generation Zainichi Korean, who naturalized as a Japanese citizen in 1990.

The main picture you use to show of Nick Zapetti doesn’t go well with the depiction of him as a gangster. He looks like an old dude in a bathrobe 😂
You also use footage from many movies that have nothing to do with the narration (such as The Naked Director, available on Netflix) and make me question your facts and sources since you don’t seem to mind if your visuals don’t match the content of the narration. You should try to stick to visuals that actually support what you’re saying. If you can’t find a good visual, then don’t use one.
