Just received my SmallRig L-B. I ordered it through my local camera shop, and it is the same price as if I would order it through Amazon (Can $70.00). I plan to use my neck strap on the top left of the L-B and on the metal silver bar on the bottom of the L-B. Would you trust the silver bar to be strong enough to hold a neck strap? Note: I use a dime to tighten the screws and it stores in the magnetic slots of the bracket.
Hi Stan, Delighted to hear you could get it off a local store that's even better, we should all be supporting them as much as possible. I am not a lover of Amazon at all but they are needed sometimes. I have no issue using the metal bar at all. I put a lot of tension on that the first time I tried it and it didn't budge. I have one strap connected to that and the other to the loop in the top of the side bracket just as you have mentioned. Works well for me so far. That's a smart move with the dime... I must remember that one.
@@kieranhayesphotography I am lucky to have the camera shop in our city. They take care of all my needs (they will send in my camera for the lug, and mount fix), so I don't have to do a thing. I know, and the staff knows me (some are good friends, and I have gone out shooting with them). Two of the staff have a Z9 or the Z8, so I am able to pick their brains, if I have any questions. Anything I purchase there, they will guarantee the lowest price, as they will match prices.
@stanmah1588 I would honestly love to be able to send more people to stores like that. I ha e a very good local store here too that I send a lot of clients too. I would much prefer to give them the business. It's not easy running a camera store these days from what I hear. Tbh it sounds like you have the perfect arrangement there and also made a few friends along the way, that's what it's all about. A lot of RUclipsrs tell me I should list all my gear and put Amazon links to it to make a few Bob, but I would prefer if people bought locally and keep communities alive.

You can screw the beetle clip quick release plate into the base of the L Bracket or you can also try it directly in the clip as this L Bracket has an Arca Swiss mount on the base. Not certain if that works though as I haven't tried it myself. myself. I hope that helps.
That's a bit complicated 😀 I am a SmallRig partner and I wanted to buy it but couldn't find it anywhere so I emailed them to ask how I could get one and they sent one out to me for free with no conditions attached. @@kieranhayesphotography I thought as much. Good to know it will be available soon. I have one for a Z6ii/Z7 body and have found it to be very useful, though it was great to pick up a few tips on how to use it. Thanks!
Hello, im in the US, but was able to purchase this from Amazon UK site. Took a tad bit longer to get here, but I got it, and works perfectly. So, you may want to go that route
@@kieranhayesphotography It's great for offsetting my flash for macro, using a smallrig magic arm attached to the side part, it can be positioned perfectly.
Another great video Kieran! You know, I was about to return my Smallrig bracket due to the battery latch not being able to fully open, until I saw your video and just noticed the level mechanism to swing out and allow for easy removal of battery. So, it is a great bracket, especially for the money, and allows for other adapters to fit in there. However, I also bought the Photoclam bracket for the Z8, and it is a bit pricier (List $195). I was able to pick up a refurbished one on B&H for $119 though. I am actually leaning more towards this one, and here is why. The Photoclam comes with a allen wrench style adaption, instead of standard screw head. If I want to add on any adaptor such as peak design strap, etc, the same allen wrench that puts on the plate, also attaches the PD strap. And there is a magnetic hold for the allen wrench which stows away quite nicely. It is a small thing, yes, but something that gives me 1 tool to use, vs the 2 different ones I would use if going with smallrig. But the small rig supports more types of adapters, and costs less. lol, it's a toss up, but my leaning is towards the photoclam ever so slightly. Thanks again Kieran!
Hi Rob, thanks a lot for the feedback and the Photocalm bracket does look like a nice bit of kit alright. I also completely understand about the allen key or as I always say less is more in photography :-) I love gear but hate carrying all of it around so the lighter the better. I always love getting feedback on how people not only see gear differently but also how they use it as well, so thanks again for the input.
Thanks Kieran, and who knows, i might favor the smallrig and just make sure I carry the small allen key with me. Not a big deal. Just thought you and others would like to know other ones out there to try as well. lol, and I followed your advice....got the Z8 and will use Z7ii for travel and hiking (light weight). Keep those vids coming 🙂@@kieranhayesphotography
Do you get any fore/aft flex between the Z8 and the SmallRig L-bracket? It seems that the rubber on the L-bracket is slightly too thick, so no matter how much I tighten the mounting screw for the L-bracket, I get some fore/aft flex when I mount it on a tripod. It doesn't seem to impact IQ, especially since the Z8 is electronic shutter only, but it is a bit worrisome.
Hi Gilbert, in all honesty I have never noticed it. I have used this L bracket a lot and it has been flawless for me. I just picked up the camera there now and tried to flex it and there is a very slight bit of movement once a sufficient amount of pressure is applied to it. I couldn't see how that would impact image quality though. I tried a three legged thing L bracket there now on my D810 and there is also some flex on that. The L Bracket on my Z7ii also has a slight bit of flex. The secondary locking pin is certainly killing any serious moment on this bracket, so I am dead happy with it.
Hi Alan, I haven't seen what the RRS bracket looks like as of yet. Didn't know there were images out there of it already. How do they solve the door issue? Is there a gap in the grip then? I will say that lever on the Smallrig will not break anytime soon. You can very comfortable swing the camera around while just holding it. Yes, I just tried it 🤣 Interested to see what RRS do with their design. If there is just a gap there or it cuts short I certainly won't be buying it.
@@kieranhayesphotography Mine is shipping as I only use the bottom bracket. For short lenses I just swivel the ball head and for long lenses the have their own mount. I find it's less bulky and a lot easier to use. I have it on my Z9 and really like it.
@agrnbrg Once you like it and it works for you that's all that really matters Alan. Some great gear for cameras available today thankfully. I personally don't think I could go back to not using an L Bracket again. For the added protection, the side handle option and more importantly for me panoramic shots. That's just me personally though and one of the things I love about photography is how we all see shots differently and also use our equipment differently. Have a great week 👍
Hi Gerald, Yes, there is a camera strap bar on the base of the L Bracket and you can of course still use the camera Eyelets to attach your strap. Apologies for the late reply also.
@@kieranhayesphotography , thanks very much, Kieran. I'm looking at SmallRig photos and wondering where, exactly, the eyelet would attach to the bracket. It appears to be by the battery compartment. That looks like the weakest point. If so, do you feel that is strong enough to support the weight of the camera as it's jostled while, say, walking?
@geraldseligman Hi Gerald, sorry, I possibly should have been clearer in my reply. I still use the original Nikon camera strap Eyelets in their original position on the camera. So the Peak Design Sling wouldn't need to be connected to the L Bracket at all. Which to be fair is handy as if you want to travel light you might let the L bracket behind the odd time.
Received my SmallRig bracket a few days ago. There are several differences from the one you were sent by the company: 1: there is no sliding extension of side bracket 2) you have to remove the camera strap lug on the left side and reattach it to the bracket itself 3) the hinged battery door flap is not present at all, there is just a gap in the cage 4) the magnetic key is a little different design, incorporates a small hex key . The last is no big deal, but the first three are huge differences which in my opinion make this L bracket less useful or less sturdy than what you've described. I wonder if you have any contacts at SmallRig who might comment on why the design changes were made?
Hi, I am more than shocked by that. What is the model number of the bracket you got? I know several other people that have exactly the same model as me. I am wondering if there was a mistake somewhere. The model I have is the 3942 bracket, I haven't seen one like what you have just described. If you give me the model number I will chase it up for you as that doesn't sound right at all.
Sorry, I am just thinking there now it's not the 3940 camera cage you have by any chance is it? I have one of them and it sounds exactly like the cage. As that's the way it's designed
@martinhorn1131 Hi Martin, the 3942 is still available. The 3940 is more for video use and camera rigs. Did you order the 3942 or 3940? You might be able to return it. Apologies for the delayed reply I was sick yesterday and today.
@@kieranhayesphotography Yep, the problem is that I don't know a cage from an L bracket 🙄. It appears that model 3942, L bracket for the Z8 is not widely available here, yet.
Hi Kieran, Got mine last week, brilliant and very well made, just like the one for my Z7II. On a completely and rather annoying subject the Z8 recall! My body is in the recall numbers, to be honest it seems like everyone is. I have had no problem at all mounting all my lenses including the F to Z adapter, in fact I find it smoother than my Z7II, why if the potential problem is with the mount is everyone having to send the bodies back for a check. The mount is Stainless steel and surely if all your lenses fit and click into place smoothly that is not going to change. I take it your camera is also included in the recall.
Hi Douglas, yes it's a beautiful bit of kit alright. Tbh I was going to post about the Z8 recall, but I am getting very mixed messages on it. It seems if what I am told is right to be an issue with the latching mechanism. Now, has it affected every Z8? Right now, everyone I have spoken to has had theirs recalled and only two people actually had an issue. So it seems there is a defect, and they are possibly just checking and confirming all is well with each one. That is going to cost Nikon a nice bit of money sorting all that out. I am going to delay sending mine in for a few weeks until the process is streamlined. I worked in a Panasonic service centre for a few years and the first week of an issue was always the worst. After that, the processes were perfected, and it all ran smoothly then. I have trued loads of lenses and never had an issue. It always seemed to be very positive and as you say nearly better than the Z7ii. So it would seem we are ok but better to get it checked at some stage anyway. The two people I talked too that had problems all got the lens on but it was a bit tricky by all accounts. Releasing the lens was fine though I am told. Out of curiosity did you know what a QD mount was, I am wondering if its just me that didn't know this 😀
@@kieranhayesphotography Hi Kieran, No, never heard of it, I did start proceedings through the Nikon website but it will probably be some time before I get word to send it. Annoyingly, Nikon seem to have done away with a UK repair centre, it says the bodies will be going to Europe for checking. It must be the spring loaded locking pin that has the potential problem, I cant see a CNC Stainless steel lens mount giving trouble if it is already working fine.
@douglasritchie2836 ya, the mount even if if it's tolerance is slightly out you would think would either work or not work and also offer a lot more resistance when fitting the lens. It nearly has to be in the locking mechanism like I am hearing. Only other option is the contact points for the lens connection being out slightly or maybe even a failure there. Might explain why the mechanism jams. Seems odd though that that would happen and the latching mechanism would surely be the first thing you would look at. I suppose we will find out soon enough.
Thanks a lot Carey and hey the more you watch them the more normal I sound 😉 You thinking about buying an L bracket? They are fantastic additions to any camera in my mind.
@@kieranhayesphotography I am thinking about buying one you make some really good points! I am just worried about adding bulk to the Z8. I am good with your accent much better than listening to the stupid shit that comes out of some peoples mouths! 😂
@CareyP I have had an L Bracket on my last 3 cameras and ya the extra weight is slight issue but when I want to travel light I just pop it off. Like now for example I am in Germany and I wanted to travel light so I left the L Bracket at home. The rest of the time I leave it on the camera though. For the Z6ii and Z7ii I liked the extra height and weight tbh. I felt it helped to balance the camera a bit more with longer lenses. In saying that there were days I hiked up a mountain and thought to myself why is my camera bag weighing 12kgs 🤣🤣🤣
@@kieranhayesphotography It isn’t the weight of them more the feeling bulky but my only experience is with the cage on my Z6ii ! I am going to try the L bracket ! Thanks!
@CareyP I have a cage for my Z6ii and it does make it feel bulky but it I think that's down to the added metal on the grip side of the camera. It makes it feel less natural to hold and just that bit wider. The L Bracket doesn't have that thankfully. The cage is great for video work though and being able to pop on a proper side handle or follow focus unit or monitor. You can just keep buying gear and never stop, that's the problem🤣🤣🤣

@tnitni0002 true, although there are still no images of the RRS out yet. Will be great to get a good few quality companies competing on this and giving us a few decent options.
Funnily enough I lost mine two days ago while out on a beach shoot, but there was a model messing with the camera so I am guessing that's when it happened. Either a 1 or 2 cent (Euro) coin works perfectly and they are also held in place by the magnets. Hope that helps.

I am lucky to have the camera shop in our city.
I've never had one of those before and really didn't know what they were for. But it seems like I've been missing out.
You really are missing out 😉 Go grab one and enjoy.
I have one for my dslr, love it, makes switching between horizontal and vertical easy, my on sticks out on the side making it a sturdy grip when walking, provides protection for bumps and such. I will have one on every one if my cameras going forward.
I can’t seem to find this anywhere
I am not sure whats going on with L brackets for the Z8 but a lot of companies seem to have stopped making them right now. Neewer also had a nice one but that doesn't seem to be in stock on their website now either.
@@kieranhayesphotography ok thanks bummer I had that same one for my z7II.
@@5waldens me too and the Z8 one is really nice also. You could check their eBay store as they might have one there.
The Neewer one might be on Amazon also.
How can you attach the L-Bracket to a Bettle clip or similar?
You can screw the beetle clip quick release plate into the base of the L Bracket or you can also try it directly in the clip as this L Bracket has an Arca Swiss mount on the base. Not certain if that works though as I haven't tried it myself. myself. I hope that helps.
Where did you pick up your SmallRig L Bracket? In the US, both Adorama and BH Photo still list it as being on backorder.
That's a bit complicated 😀 I am a SmallRig partner and I wanted to buy it but couldn't find it anywhere so I emailed them to ask how I could get one and they sent one out to me for free with no conditions attached. I bought the cage for the Z8 though and I have a load of their products. It's to come into stock very soon though I am told. Really nice bit of kit and amazing value for money.
@@kieranhayesphotography
I thought as much. Good to know it will be available soon. I have one for a Z6ii/Z7 body and have found it to be very useful, though it was great to pick up a few tips on how to use it. Thanks!
@martinhorn1131 thanks for watching Martin and fingers crossed it arrives in the next week or two for you.
Hello, im in the US, but was able to purchase this from Amazon UK site. Took a tad bit longer to get here, but I got it, and works perfectly. So, you may want to go that route
I got mine a few weeks, I needed it for my big hands.
It's a great bit of kit isn't it. Makes the camera just the right size in my mind.
@@kieranhayesphotography It's great for offsetting my flash for macro, using a smallrig magic arm attached to the side part, it can be positioned perfectly.
@@wilteduk007 I love those magic arms. I have about 6 of them around the place here. Couldn't live without them now.
@@robroyig-robroyphotography9225 Hi Rob, awesome how are you liking the Z8/Z7ii combo? I think they work really well together.
@@kieranhayesphotography Thanks for your response!
That door for the battery is just something to break. I prefer the RRS bracket
Yes, I just tried it 🤣
Interested to see what RRS do with their design.
Brilliant review 👍👍
Thanks a million and enjoy the Z8 :-)
Aside from the QD clip, is there another way to attach a Peak Design sling? The QD makes me a bit nervous regarding possible accidental release.
It’s model 3940 alright. Really disappointing. I hope you can find out what happened to the original design
@@kieranhayesphotography Yea, I suppose we have no option, far to expensive to take a chance, thanks, Kieran, keep up the good work.👍👍
@douglasritchie2836 thanks Douglas. Fingers crossed it all goes smoothly now.
Kieran another great video! thanks for sharing!
Thanks a lot Carey and hey the more you watch them the more normal I sound 😉
You thinking about buying an L bracket? They are fantastic additions to any camera in my mind.
@@kieranhayesphotography I am thinking about buying one you make some really good points! I am just worried about adding bulk to the Z8. I bought a cage for my Z6ll and their well made but makes the camera feel a little bulky. Hey but for 50 US not really a big hit to give one a try.
SmallRig have given me discount code: SmallRig3942 for Amazon Uk where you can save money on this awesome L Bracket from the 29th of August 2023 till the 11th of September 2023, thanks SmallRig. One redemption per customer.
Will l bracket be handy with peak design alligned on bracket? I want it more for protection than for gimbal. I heard 2 z8 that had a fall because of anchor fail
Hi John, there is a solid metal bar anchor point on the base of the bracket for camera slings to be attached to.
Like you, I have heard of those two events, reassuringly no more have surfaced as of yet. Let's hope it stays that way, too. Enjoy the Z8 👍

Coming into stock soon though I am told. Deliveries to land in stores before the end of July, I think it was the third week of July they mentioned to me, depends on what part of the world you are in though.
Good presentation but your close-ups are too wide and too fast, we don't have time to see properly!

I will wait for Kirk or Really Right Stuff
Hi Peter, interested to hear which one you go for and how you get on with it 👍 Have a great weekend.
Kirk is not modular. RRS is modular like smallrig but 4x price.
@tnitni0002 true, although there are still no images of the RRS out yet. Will be great to get a good few quality companies competing on this and giving us a few decent options.
@@kieranhayesphotography you're right there are no pictures of the RRS product. But their website gives you options with the modular setup.
@tnitni0002 I have always been of the frame of mind that until I see it, it doesn't exist 🤣 I know I am mad 😀
That magnetic key fell off on my first day out and I can't find a replacement.
Funnily enough I lost mine two days ago while out on a beach shoot, but there was a model messing with the camera so I am guessing that's when it happened. Either a 1 or 2 cent (Euro) coin works perfectly and they are also held in place by the magnets. Hope that helps.
