Thank you I was wondering did anyone had a bad experience with this, before I start. I'm sticking to my comb. Thank you so much before I mess my hair up.
So finger detangling wasn't the problem then? The problem was being impatient with the process and not doing it right. BUT I get it. That shut takes forever and is time consuming as hell
lgfuad4lyf Finger detangling was the problem along with the other things I’ve mentioned. For my hair type it was always impossible to get every single knot and tangle (mainly at the roots 🙄) which over time would cause more knots even matting in small areas. Wasn’t worth it to me.
Use common sense baby. I know you want to have long hair, but please use common sense. There are plesnty of people with type 4 bleached hair that detangle with a brush and get long hair. If you let your hair mat up by not brushing it then you will be ripping thru it and it will break off.
I think wide tooth combs are great when detangling for a proctective style like braids, weave, etc because of the accumulation of hair over weeks at an time. But finger detaingling is great for low manipulation styles or washing your hair. But, this way works for me personally when it comes to my hair I use both techniques and less is more sometimes .
Im almost 5 years into my natural hair journey. And my hair thrived with finger detangling. I believe a good amount of my hair length is due to hair retention. I "use" to barely loose any hair with detangling and styling my hair. Now my hair gets soooo tangled especially at the roots. I dont know whats going on. And so much hair is shedding.
I love finger detangling ..it’s works for me ..do it on a day when u have time ..ya hand feel knots that combs can’t ..long as u got oil and time ..it works
I never understood finger detangling. But it seems my hair only like finger detangling my ends, but at mid length my hands would start to get stuck, so I just follow up with my brush. TLDR: Clear the ends first with finger and then follow up with comb :D Of course, it ain't worth it if it rips out your hair.
Finger detangling solely can indeed be damaging when your hair gets to a certain length. It took me getting massive crown breakage to realize that was my problem. Finger detangling does not do a thorough job especially at the roots and so when I would try to pick my hair for volume, I would hit snags and cause breakage. Tbh, it was really all over my head but the crown was the worst affected. But i kept doing it because the damage wasn't obvious yet and so I didnt realize the cumulative effect of all that. It sure took me way too long to realize that I needed to be detangling properly with a brush. Now i use the wet brush once a week. Possibly twice if needed. I tried about 5 different brushes (felicia Leatherwood, wet brush, denman, Michel mercier, paddle brush, new tangle teezer with handle) before settling with that as the best one for me. But yeah, once that hair dries and the roots shrink and you have tangles in there, it's a wrap
Amy Lozy I feel like we lived through the same experience. My crown gets THEE driest and needs a bit more TLC than the rest of my hair. That means I need to detangle thoroughly and keep it moisturized because it easily breaks off with ANY type of improper care. I went through a few brushes as well and my hair was looking at me like “yeah, ok 😒.” My detangling brush now is my best friend and I have 0 interest to do any type of finger detangling. Thanks for sharing, love! 💕
I know this is an old comment, but at what length does finger detangling get bad for your hair? I’m genuinely asking because my hair is past my waist and I’m not trying to ruin all the hard work I did to get to this length. I finger detangle my hair and then braid it up and my hair has been fine so far and I lose very little hair each time I do it so please let me know whenever you have time!
Finger detangling is bad and wide tooth comb is worst because the sh:t was cutting my hair for 2years I was wondering why until I started using detangling brush and no more excessive shedding.
Ezekiel Somani Right! The only thing I have to remember is to change out my detangling brush every 3-6 months (even up to a year) because the teeth starts to get wonky, that’s nothing compared to the benefits though ❤️
Yaaaaassss this is so true!!!!! Just took down crochet braids and tried finger detangling and it was Awful!!! Especially if your in a hurry... I made it worse got fairy knots :(.. Thank God He kept me through the process:)... I needed all these tips thanks for this video....
Finger detangling is not just "picking" or "pulling" your hair apart (the harp method). You actually COMB your hair with your hands first and only pick apart the knots that you come across. Always do this with wet hair and conditioner and take your time going from the bottom up. If you're in a hurry, you shouldn't be doing your hair, period. I grown my hair to hip length with only finger combing...DevaCurl ruined my hair, but I have stuck to finger combing and I retain a lot more than when using a comb or brush.
@@DeJhaJoy I agree that ppl should do what works for them, but I just wanted to clarify that finger detangling isn't just picking/pulling the hair apart...there's a little more to it.
I'm a male know finger detangling doesn't work for everybody that's what i heard but it does work for some people because everyone hair is difference it works for me i just take my time when i'm detangle my hair with my hands i'm patient about it i done it before i am starting to get back to doing finger detangling because everytime i used a comb pick and brush first some of my hair end up breaking off that's why i rather now detangle my hair first before i used wooden comb pick my hair or wooden brush it i know comb and brush don't work for everyone either most hair end up breaking off but it does work for some people that most of there hair don't break off
oh yeah i forgot to say that i actually do put water on my hair and i put some moisturize on my hair this time before i do detangle my hair with my hands fighters, comb or brush that's all i want to say
Finger detangling exclusively does not work for me. I do light finger detangling when I apply my coconut oil prepoo and light finger detangle the next morning to try to get as much of the shed hair out as possible, but when I get to detangling for real for real after I shampoo my hair, it’s Hi Felicia (Leatherwood Detangling Brush), so good to see you again!
Honestly once your hair reaches a certain length the finger detangeling does not work anymore bc you can't detangle all the strands so your hair loss. That happened to my hair
I've grown my hair to hip length with finger detangling and it did not take forever at all. Brushes/Combs do not agree with my hair at all. Simply start from the bottom up and "comb" your hair.
I'm only finger detangling now because I'm waiting for my brush to ship. I still have to use a comb at the roots because my hair will matt and it ain't even that long. Fine strands, high density pls take caution. Do not strictly finger detangling and leave it for up to two weeks in a protective style. You need to do it really often. One thing I've noticed is the hair left in will start to fall especially when you shampoo and condition and can tangle and knot your ends. My brush cannot come fast enough
Water and shea butter helps with finger detangling, once your hair gets used to it you'll see a difference, don't give up and please take your time so you won't rip the strands of your hair.
I agree with this, I have a detangling brush off of amazon it’s similar to the Felicia leatherwood detangling brush. It’s absolutely amazing, never going to solely finger de tangle ever again. I don’t want to spend more than 30mins styling and a detangling brush just works better for me.
SUPPERRRRRR LATE but for me, only finger detangling on washday does not work well. But, it does benefit my hair when I do it as a precursor to using my wide tooth comb. The folks who only finger tangle and their thrives, all the power to them 👍🏾
I really agree with u when I was finger detangling I was able to detangle my hair very well but the roots was the struggle and my hair was breaking off more than usual and the shedding was very bad
I’ ve been finger detangling for a couple years. Now that I’m mid back length, I’m starting to think I should start using my wide tooth comb again because my roots do seem to be more tangled. I’m going to start detangling in very small sections to see if that helps. I do notice if I let my hair dry in braids or twist, use oil to take them down and detangle during the take down, i get my roots better.
Yaas, finally someone who agrees with me. I use to finger detangle and it didnt work, just cause shedding and breaking. So I use a regular comb non wide tooth, and comb Every Single, Strand, until I see no hair coming out.
I want to throw in some tips in addition to yours. 1. I find detangling with gloves makes it SO MUCH EASIER!!! 2. Have a spray bottle and oil near by. Because I’m super cheap and I’m about to wash it out anyways, I use canola oil or vegetable. I’m not getting it on my scalp anyways. 3. Keeping ur hair stretch helps too 4. It helps do this before shampooing. Me being cheap again, I condition and detangle outside the shower or before putting in head in the sink. I guess I kinda double it as a pre-poo
I always use a Tangle Teezer on my wash day now. I had to stop finger detangling too. I had no clue that it was really messing up my hair until I found out. I stopped using silicone products & only use silicone free now.
I use a wide tooth comb IT'S A MUST youwon't be pulling your hair out if you handle correctly HELL look how our elders handled their hair YOUR HAIR STILL LOOKS GORGEOUS
@@DeJhaJoy YES that's fine I was saying I agree that dinner detangling is not for me I just use that comb lololol thanks and your hair will be back before you know it
The poppppping!😂 I struggle with ripping through and popping my strands no matter what I use. Fingers, combs, detangling brushes. 😩 I just haven't mastered detangling my fine, kinky, low-medium density hair. I'm hoping to get better by 2020-2021 latest. I need patience.
Dominique Sweeney 2020-20201??! 😂 No, let’s try to save those strands now. I noticed that I had to use hot water with leave in conditioner in it and I also wasn’t using enough products while detangling. You also may need to do a small dust just to fight off some of those knots. Hopefully this helps 😩
@@DeJhaJoy I needed to trim and find a leave in that worked for me. I went through two leave ins that left my hair feeling horrible because I didn't wanna waste it🙈 I won't do that again. But I did trim and found a great leave in for me. Only thing left is patience and the right detangling brush. And the water, I'm a little lazy on the spray bottle😅
Dominique Sweeney Well, you’re on the right track. You’ll have it down by the Summer 😂 Also, I went ahead and linked the detangling brushes I use in the description box.
I have fine kinky strands too and i just used to pop my hair off by just sectioning it off 😩. I started working in smaller sections and using thick creams to give me more slip. Layering products helps me as well, but patience is key. I use the tangle teezer wet brush (The one with the handle) but I finger detangle before. I get way less shedding and breakage
I just use a denman brush and make sure to section my hair in at least 8 sections. Also it’s really just about taking my time & going slowly from my ends to my roots. I used to be so impatient and would just be ripping the hair out of head lol & of course a ton of conditioner! Mielle has some great natural conditioners that I love. Expensive yes but so worth it. This seems to be working great for me & I’ve noticed a lot less hair loss after detangling.
Finger detangling is not for people who don't have patience. I have enough patience to carefully brush out or comb my hair out which take a few seconds in the shower. But finger detangling in the shower takes time so I can imagine outside of the shower. I tried finger detangling twice and I was super aggravated and it made me hate my hair. Now having slip and detangling tool makes me love my hair. You actually get rid of the shedded hair. When the spaces are too wide, you skip over a lot of hair which stays tangled. You can be thorough with detangling but that can take hrs 🙄 Even wide teeth combs don't thoroughly detangle. Thicker hair detangles faster and easier with a tool. I got too much hair to be finger detangling. I tried using a comb and finger detangling last night and broke a few hairs off and I usually don't see small pieces of hair. Never again!
CurlyNella1011 You spoke nothing, but the truth!! Thick and long hair + having to be the most thorough (still won’t be enough) + needing to have an infinite amount of patience = Me never doing it again. All I need is a gang of slip and my tangle teezer, so I can detangle and be done in less than 30 minutes.
Ot might have been the light color that taken the hair out..I dont use a comb ..I'm 56 yr old I have less breakage and more growth..no comb just finger picking my hair..I'm a 4c
Why do people love stress like this? There's enough comb and brushes in the market which will save you a lot of time with slippery detanglers! God knows I spend 45 min doing my cleansing/ conditioning. My styling takes 1-2½ hours and I'm done. I have two children, school studies and other businesses to cater to. My hair shouldn't take 5 hours of my time.
(Sigh) Now I don’t know what to believe. I started finger detangling my hair a couple months ago cause I was so convinced it would make my hair grow more. It made sense how I was really ripping my hair out with combs. I haven’t seen any noticeable results yet but now I see this video there’s a chance it might not even work
Good video but I still don’t get what finger detangling did to your hair exactly. Was it cause you couldn’t get all the shed hair out? Did it cause more knots? Did it cause your styles to become tangled?
Finger detangling is when you separate your hair strands by hand instead of using a detangling tool. It caused my hair to tangle more plus my hair was dry from previous bleach/dye.
@@DeJhaJoy So was it the finger detangling that caused the set back, or was it finger detangling along with dry bleached hair? I'm asking because I am considering finger detangling. I have noticed a lot of breakage when I use a comb or denman brush.
LaMesha Hale It was a combo. One thing to note is that you really need patience and enough slip. But no amount of slip helped me to get all the knots. Do what works best for you. 💕
I have 4a4b hair and finger detangling was a nightmare for me too. My roots stayed tangled and matted. It was painful to separate. Now I just use my fingers to separate most of the tangles, but I wide tooth comb with a lot of conditioner and oil or my detangling brush.
So what you recommend to stop excessive breakage then? Cause whenever I comb my hair a whole lot a hair comes out and because of that its stuck at shoulder length for years now.
I noticed tons of frizz and single strange knots from finger detangling, I'm honestly pissed right now bc I just cut damage from my hair only for this mess to start. I have low porosity, medium density, 4A hair if that helps smh
#heycousin This was my same Experience! I am trying to find the best detangler for my hair so far I really love the wet tangle teezer detamgler + the denman tangle tamer! My hair dont even like wide tooth combs either. I had to cut so much length when i tried finger detangling and using a wtc. You live and learn!💜💜
This sound so backwards. Idk. Use a prepoo (african pride has a bomb one) and comb THROUGH your hair with your fingers not just pull it apart pull it apart should be only when your finger catches a knot. I’ve never hear someone having damage from using your own fingers unless your literally ripping your hair apart. Be gentle that’s all.
It probably was the dye that broke your hair off!!! And how can a comb or brush be better!!! It’s clearly something you where doing wrong!! How often where you finger detangling if it was every two months you’re hair probably matted!! Because how it sounds your hair was in a bad state from not touching it and you where tryna detangle that I honestly don’t think it was finger detangling!!!
Eh Bandz I’ve already explained the events leading up to my hair breaking which was a combo of my hair being bleached, dry and finger detangling. I gave those tips because that’s what I needed at the time and learned over time. Also, I wasn’t getting all of the tangles (which my detangling brush does). No where did I say I went 2 months between sessions.
Herica Alexandre My hair had already been bleached for 2-3 years, so only my ends had bleach on them. The catastrophe happened from the root to the ends, because of everything I’ve listed in the vid. However, dryness from the bleached ends did play a part.
Some of yall want to have long hair so bad that you are not using common sense! I used to be so impatient and would just be ripping the hair out of head lol & of course a ton of conditioner! Mielle has some great natural conditioners that I love. Expensive yes but so worth it. This seems to be working great for me & I’ve noticed a lot less hair loss after detangling.
Sounds like a great routine. That impatience is no joke lol.. 💕
I love scarves and the way you are rocking yours is fresh! Love the look on you❣
Thank you! 💕
Leave In conditioner..
So finger detangling wasn't the problem.
@Janiya Gowdy my point was that she was the reason her hair broke off. Reread that
(Sigh) Now I don’t know what to believe. I started finger detangling my hair a couple months ago cause I was so convinced it would make my hair grow more. It made sense how I was really ripping my hair out with combs. I haven’t seen any noticeable results yet but now I see this video there’s a chance it might not even work
Lol I’m finger detangling rt now
Thanks to finger detangling, I have far fewer hairs that fall or break, and my brush or comb always contained a lot of hair
That head scarf is fire!!! Girl idk I be popping my strands whether I use my fingers or a brush, I think I need a trim :(
Rei An Sandiford Thank you! Yes, a trim may be what you need. Also, make sure you’re applying enough slippery products when detangling 😘💕
Seamless combs are the best
@@DeJhaJoy Okay I understand. Thank you for replying back :-)
I have 4a4b hair and finger detangling was a nightmare for me too. My roots stayed tangled and matted. It was painful to separate. Now I just use my fingers to separate most of the tangles, but I wide tooth comb with a lot of conditioner and oil or my detangling brush.
Love the flower background! So cute😍💐💐🌹💮🌹💐💐
Dominique Sweeney Thank you 🥰
@@DeJhaJoy You're welcome!😊
So what you recommend to stop excessive breakage then? Cause whenever I comb my hair a whole lot a hair comes out and because of that its stuck at shoulder length for years now.
Lmao 😂 😭 Finger detangling is okay good to an extent. After protective styles you have to use tools or the hair will start to dread
I finger detange because it's faster than finding a comb
I noticed tons of frizz and single strange knots from finger detangling, I'm honestly pissed right now bc I just cut damage from my hair only for this mess to start. I have low porosity, medium density, 4A hair if that helps smh
#heycousin This was my same Experience! I am trying to find the best detangler for my hair so far I really love the wet tangle teezer detamgler + the denman tangle tamer! My hair dont even like wide tooth combs either. I had to cut so much length when i tried finger detangling and using a wtc. You live and learn!💜💜
ISHUKE #HeyCousin You definitely live and learn. Sometimes the result of a lesson means cutting off your hair tsk tsk. 😘💕
@@DeJhaJoy That exactly what I had to ✂️✂️snip snip!! went from mid back to neck length
What I like doing is using a wide tooth comb first then going in with my tangle teezer brush.🤗
You should NEVER finger detangle when you are tired!
Your hair still look beautiful to me
Carmen Fields Thank you. That happened in 2015; I cut all of that damage off ❤️
This sound so backwards.
Thank you for this video, I will not make the same decision. I will stay with my combs. I was going to take the challenge, but no no .Thank you
Tasha James You’re welcome 💕
My natural hair is like this...too kinky!! And i just CAN'T see myself finger combing this head of hair!!
i only finger detangle when i'm rinsing the conditioner on wash day
It probably was the dye that broke your hair off!!!
Finger Detangling should be the first step in Detangling. It shouldn’t be the only method
Finger detangling matted my hair up so yeah it’s a no for me
Dry hair bleach hair being lazy and not
bring patience is what broke your hair off 🤦🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️
Angel Herron ...basically, what I explained in the video..
Could You Please let me know what song that was at the beginning of your video?🤔
What!!! And am always finger detangling maybe i should stop n compare results
Shirlette Huddha Girl, I had to ditch the do-do. It was more of a hassle in my personal experience. 💕
It Works For Me 😂
Bleach, dye, dry 4c, while doing hair while tired... but we blaming finger detangling? Bet😂
I LOVE that intro song!!
Timetrae Thank you!
You don't think bleaching your hair had something to do with it?
Herica Alexandre My hair had already been bleached for 2-3 years, so only my ends had bleach on them. The catastrophe happened from the root to the ends, because of everything I’ve listed in the vid. However, dryness from the bleached ends did play a part.
@@DeJhaJoy ohh ok. I understand.
Thank you for the tips!! New subscriber, love your channel!!
Jasmine Clark Thank you and welcome, family!!
Love your glasses! Where could I get a pair like that??
Thank you! Sears.
Ive tried 3 different detangling brushes and so much hair is coming out still.
Sylvia BL Oh no! Have you tried a wide tooth comb?
Yes I have but I dont know if it was wide enough. Any particular comb you would suggest?
Love the hair and scarf 😍
Latoya_the_ Natural Thank you! ❤️
Yup I sure do remember that video 😂 I’m a day 1...
Bre Evans You lit!! 😍
New subscriber here.I enjoy watching your videos.Very chill personality.
JADE P Thank you and welcome to the family! 😘
You are so pretty!
Thank you!
Some of yall want to have long hair so bad that you are not using common sense! Yes you may be retaining length by finger detangling because your hair is basically one big dread loc, or if you section it, a few big or tiny dread locks. Hair is supposed to shed and how tf do you think your hair is shedding if you are not brushing through it? Come on yall please use some common sense. I know we want long hair, but use the innovations that the good god gave us.
Girl soooooooo many people told me to finger detangle and the fcked my hair up so bad! I remember pressing my hair one day and I was perplexed at why it was so difficult to do! It was that fcking finger detangling! Never again! There ain't nothing wrong with them detangling brushes and they were made for a reason!
You kinda look like Aisha abdul
🤣🤣🤣sure 🙄
I don’t finger detangle because it doesn’t take out all the tangles and matts
