Greyson Nekrutman Plays "Caravan" (Massive Drum Solo)

- Опубликовано: 17 фев 2022
- Greyson Nekrutman is a teen drumming phenom who has so much passion and energy, he’s impossible to ignore. He admires the great drumming legends and he’s covered a ton of classic jazz and big band tunes over the past few years.
“That’s cool and all, but can you play ‘Caravan’?”
The movie Whiplash came out in 2014, and it reminded the rest of the world how awesome drumming is. It featured the song “Caravan” (Juan Tizol/Duke Ellington), which became a recurring piece for the protagonist.
Of course, whenever a song enters pop culture, people start requesting that song. And as a drummer - especially as a jazz drummer - you bet Greyson has been asked to play it. It’s like asking a metal guitarist to shred the solo from Dragonforce’s “Through The Fire And Flames“.
In the video above, Greyson nails the song and goes into an extended drum solo with killer technique and dynamics, blazing fast hands, and confidence.
(P.S. Have you seen Greyson’s tips for nailing Buddy Rich licks? Check them out here: • Breaking Down 5 Imposs... )

one of the coolest things to me about this solo is that at 4:42 he accidentally clicks his sticks together. You can see him kind of stop and think about it for a moment and then he decides to work the stick clicks into the solo. That kind of fast thinking can't be taught!

We got our Buddy Rich here
Oh yeah? Buddy had his own band and his own gigs? Where's Greyson's band and said projects that he's leading like Buddy?
You anoint a person before they've done anything meaningful. If Buddy were around to hear that a kid who won't ever get closer to where he was when he was around, is be compared to him... boooyyy he would let us hear it. It's irresponsible to compare anyone to Buddy Rich let alone an internet drummer who blew up on Instagram and doesn't have a meaningful gig other than Drumeo's videos.

Incredible performance. The difference between this Caravan and the movie is that Greyson is playing with passion and freedom of expression. Neiman was playing with blind determination and fury.

I like the fact that Greyson changes grips, from matched to trad and vice versa. His technical and improvisational ability is just mind-blowing. He's the new Buddy Rich, no doubt about it. He's brought big band drumming back to life, and it sounds better than ever. He's already a legend, at the age of 19. Wow.
he appears to draw influence from buddy rich, the signs behind him with his initials GN are the same design that buddy rich BR had printed on the front of his bass drum
There’s also a Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa playing nod in this. 😉

Grayson, as a retired independent Audio Mastering Engineer, and working with the likes of Mike Portnoy, Danny Carey, Larnell Lewis, Steve Gadd, and Dave Weckl to drop a few names; I found your 'Caravan' video self-written chops to be well-done, and on par with some of the best in the industry. You appear to have a very mathematical mind, yet you're able to keep your mechanics fluid and totally smooth without sounding too 'clinical'. BRAVO. I am ALSO a classically trained pianist (since I was 5 years old). About thirteen years ago at a Portnoy /Petrucci drum/guitar clinic (when I was 55), Mike told me in private after the clinic as were were jamming for a bit on their tunes that I would have no problem keeping up with Jordan Rudess. I took that as an TREMENDOUS compliment. John happened to overhear the conversation, and agreed with him.
I told him that I had toured in a progressive rock band around the globe for three years as their musical director with exclusive bookings from Ted Charles Productions out of Chicago. Mike said he was aware of him, and asked me why I wasn't still out on the road performing. Told him about family, a preference to work as a mastering engineer, graduate of MIT with a double masters in engineering, etc.
He liked what I'd done and told me if their production manager would ever let them choose their mastering engineer, they'd send a tune to me for vetting.
Anyway, keep on advancing as I know that you will, Greyson. If I'm right, they will be talking about you for years to come.
As a drummer I sometimes get remarks about weird mouth movements while playing, but this proves to me that it is not weird at all! (Epic performance, by the way!!)
My first time to photograph a band (jazz), I went to fellow photogs for advice. They all said the same thing; don't shoot the drummer as he plays. No one will notice the rest of the band due to the drummer's weird faces.
Same here. Seems universal.
Bill Bruford does it as well! All the vids from old to new shows him doing it. It's a counting thing, I do it here and there.
When our very essence becomes one with the groove, we all make funky faces.
