- For this episode of Rhythm Roulette, Mass Appeal linked up with Jake One.
Very few artists can traverse the constantly shifting borders between the underground and the mainstream like Jake One. The Seattle producer is respected, and rightfully so, in both worlds for his work with 50 Cent and G-Unit, De La Soul, E-40, DOOM, and more. He's also worked on complete projects with Freeway and Brother Ali. Then with Mayer Hawthorne, he put out a feel good album under the Tuxedo moniker. Basically, his production credits weigh a ton.
From Spin Cycle to his studio in Washington, Jake lucks out with The Best of Herbie Hancock, The Manhattans' Forever By Your Side, and a Reverend E. Stanley Branch record. Jake One's sampling methods kick in immediately as he skips around the records, finding a "Yeah!" from Rev. Branch and some drums from The Manhattans. He hears something worth taking from the choir on Rev. Branch's record then drums from Herbie. The Manhattans also helped provide a snare. As the beat comes together all on his keyboard, he goes back to the choir to find some shouting to fill out the beat. Jake tinkers around with a bass line and before you know it, he's sequenced a beat fit for the church and the club.

It’s so impressive how comfortable he is with the hardware, what he did on that ASR is considered a felony in over 49 states
And countries!
Pro Tools over there looking real lonely :)
Moral of the story, master one tool, then add a other, and a other...

Guys, I'm so sorry, what's ASR?
This is what the 10,000 hours concept looks like in practice.
EXACTLY!!! Especially as it pertains to the ASR-10
I wish I could thumb this comment up twice.
what is the 10,000 hours concept? genuine question 😂
i think it's that you need to spent 10.000 hours of doing something to be an expert at it.
it's from a book by malcom gladwell. if you practice something for 10,000 hours you master it.
i like how he actually used drums sampled from the records themselves!! usually the producers on here just sample a melody and add their own drums and other instruments
Exactly! This is how it should have to be done! Only sounds from the three records. I don’t like when they do that with drums they already had loaded or breaks hey have already!!! 👍😁🙏🏻✌️🍿
That is what I always did. All records, and NEVER sampled another beatmaker's drums. That's straight violation.
Jake One moves faster on the ASR than most do in FL Studio
drum machines are faster than daws to make a beat
Shots fired 😂
Draggin loops isnt making music
@@johnbosack6772 say that to madlib then
@@lee_drifting That's not what Madlib or 9th Wonder did though.
Wow... This is my first impression of Jake One. I give him 100% respect after watching this . Literally watching him inspired me to push myself and better my craft. Respect.
Love how he integrated all three records. and sampled choir as well as drums. Jake One has set the new standard.
it's crazy how he almost completely removes the visual component. You don't see him staring at a screen (apart from his little lcd display). is it all ears? wild.
mikeXpapa bruh, this is what producing really looks like... the great one do it by ear.
Lol is it the rule ?
And the fact why he removes the visual part is because he cotnrolls his daw trough a master keyboard. Just sayin
There's a laptop to his right
He does it all on the keyboard then tracks it into protools
I have been making beats for years over 20 easy and Jake performed a clinic. I learned some cool shit just watching him work. He has been using the ASR for years so his speed and ear are sharp as hell. So to all you upcoming and new producers Jake is Neo (after he knew he was the one) There will come a time where you will have your Matrix moment and it will all click. Jake One you are easily one of my top producers and I try to watch every video I can find because I always learn something or I am reminded of a technique that I have neglected to use in awhile. Easily one of the TOP 5 RR's so far!!!!!
Very few producers can emulate Jakes sound. He is the real deal. His mixture of new and old hip hop is amazing.
dbcooprrr What is he doing that you never heard before ?
It is not so much that he is doing something we have never heard he just does it extremely well and has great technique. If you watch football what Quarterback is doing something you never seen before? He throws and hands off the ball and command the offense. The great ones are acknowledged by their technique and skill level.
OverlorBeats lol yeah jakeone is the truth but church samples were a staple on the gravediggaz album prince paul did that before most.
OverlorBeats p
"Yeas are always good.- Jake One 2016
You caught that too
Jewels
Been on A dry streak for like a week. Watched this. Went and found a gospel sample and made the best beat of my life. I love u Jake one
FINALLY THIS DUDE IS ON HERE!!!!!!! THATS LIKE HAVING KANYE (the old version) on here. mass appeal yall get 1000+ cool points for that
This just ruined my whole night. I got to go put in some work after watching that man get busy. Truly an inspiration. His old school workflow brings back memories.
"You gotta wait for the evil chords" Exaaaaaaactly! lol
As soon as I saw Jake One I knew this was gonna be one of my favs.....Jake did not let me down
That ASR10 is like an extension of him.
"this is too hopeful we need the evil chord" haha
Hems port then moves on to record the hopeful part lol
was lol when he did that
for ear reference, your evil chord at @2:25
He is referring the the "Ah" in the "Amen" cadence. It's actually quite common in gospel. Also a lot of black music makes uses of tritone substitutions, which are also "evil" chords.
I cried a little when I saw that notification. About Time Jake Uno!
Deadass me too
me too..
I'm still tripping off that Acid Rain beat he did for Chance.
I thought I was the only one
he delivered exactly what i expected! nice guy, fast on the sampling side and a super dope beatmaker tho!
Real Talk
This is one of my favorite episodes. Not my favorite beat, but the vibe of this episode is inspiring. Dude is in his groove, and you don't see the ASR-10 in the wild too often
I've been waiting so long for this! My fav producer!
Yondo!🙏
Love your beats too man!
love you yondo
bruh youre a goat
I really enjoyed this. I liked his quick sampling - if he like it, he sampled it. Everything got thrown in including chopped up drum samples too. Good job!
A quick Google search shows that Rev Elridge Stanley Branch is no longer with us (1906 - 1993).
He been on that ASR for so long he run through it like butter.
I love the way you saw he realized what those 3 chords will do together.
"This might be kinda hard actually"
I think he was talking about getting the chop right
Alchemist next.
ASAP
Can't believe he hasn't been on this yet
Facts
YES
lol
Just checking this one after few years. Yup, still kills it.
WOW! Jake had me bopping my head the whole time! People don't know he made 3 kings off an old gospel record too. This dude gets a gospel record and turns it into FIRE! His submission and 9th wonder's are tied for the best. Black milk is number 2! I fucking love this series!
That drumbreak he did for the end is crazy
holy fucking shit, that was so dope. Jake one is the most complete producer in the game no doubt.
I couldn't tell you how many times I've watched this video. So DOPE! Jake is a beast!
3:00 finds one of the craziest samples I've heard, flips it perfectly: "That's kinda hard actually". Kinda.
one of the few producers these days whos not making trap beats this guy is dope af.
He so dope, he gave away a lot of production gems on this one! I always dig all his videos.
you're a god to Seattle producers man
God to producers in general
Yeah but growing up 15 min away from where he grew up, it really makes him bigger to me haha I wouldnt be producing if it wasnt for him.
okay yeah that's even cooler
Jake One , what a sick beat..I know I'm here in 2020, just when I thought I'd viewed all of these Rhythm Roulette I'm still finding ones I missed somehow.
Love the series and would find it hard to pick a Top 3.
the way he works his way around the record looking for sounds is inspiring. dude made it all from sounds from the recordssss yoooo
NO FUCKING WAAYY I DIDNT EVEN WATCH THIS SHIT YET AND IM ALREADY BOUTTA CRY IVE BEEN WAITING ON THIS FOR SO LONG
i cried
ajaya jones evrytiem
KINGSAWVY R its really not that serious smh
jizz jizzums just like your existence
KINGSAWVY R yet your crying just for someone who makes more money then you hahaha loser
THANK YOU MASS APPEAL! Jake one is on my top 5 for sure.
Dude using that sampler like he's Tom Cruise in Minority Report. Anyone know about that sampler keyboard he's using? Makes it look so easy
ensoniq asr-10 , ive never used one but if he makes it look easy its because hes put mad hours into it.
He'd probably be ten times as fast with Ableton if he'd spent fifteen years making beats like that. The ASR-10 has a special sound though, it dirties everything up nicely.
bwahah..minority report.
ASR!
asr
i wish i could navigate through my life like jake one navigates through his keyboard!! absolute prodigy this guy! bless up
Hearing Freddie Gibbs go in on this beat wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.
and add a little Freeway feature for that extra spice
Roc Marci or Conway.
He’s made an album with madlib and the alchemist but if he and Jake one made an album... bro I can’t even imagine
I live around the corner from Jake in the Seattle area. I don't usually comment on vids, but it's funny to know how many successful records are being made in our neighborhood.
Might be one the best RR I've ever heard. Hats off to you, sir!
Rhythm roulette the guy actually utilized anything outside of his comfort zone and go to box.. are the drums snare Jordan smackin? No but the process shows the minimal you can use and create a record off sheer creativity and limitation.. the same
Limitation we have in our minds is the same powerful tool we fail to make the best of. Jakes work speaks for himself dope to see him tackle the roulette the right way.
i like to watch all this episodes to have a perspective of different workflows. thank you for this Mass Appeal, always reppin' the real heads music game.
I just love how Hip-Hop is all about those skills. Big props to Jake One
we need to get the funky DJ Quik on here
might have to change the name to funk appeal after he kills it
jkolaWOLE DOG YOU DONT EVEN KNOW HOW MUCH I HOPE THIS CAN HAPPEN!!!!
Yaaaass
i love this video - must have watched it 50 times NO LIE !!!
The Essence is mad real. Sounds like a Beat some Wu members would flow on.
I gotta come back and watch this every few months
Master of his craft and his tools. Incredible
Love that guy, it's beyond music, so positive energy in him.
extremely underrated producer
Meanwhile many producers can’t do anything without a DAW.
This guy is brilliant and master of his craft .
He always kills it
I have been waiting for this and you killed it. One of your biggest fans. Thank you
Jake & Just had the dopest beats I heard so far in the series.
This was bittersweet watching this made me think "ok it's possible for mass appeal to get anyone!"........but Dilla.....sorry there's something in my eye right now....
Hands down...........
Jake 1 might have the best Rythym Roulette yet!
wonderful. Can't wait for Madlib.
I had to come back to this. Jake is amazing
that beat needs to be on the next wu joint ghost and rae will body that
Best comment! That would be fire!
Styles p all day my dude
My favorite producer in action.
They finally brought the man! 🙌🏽
Jake one never disappoints ..EVER
Jake is from that special breed of great producers
i really want alchemist on this
I have no idea where I recognize his name from but that should be testament to his craft. I was unfamiliar, yet subconsciously excited to see it. Not only did he make a killer beat but the way he handled the keys and knobs made it seem like he can whip you up a classic in 20 minutes. Great job.
Wow @jakeuno that was so refreshing.... one of the Best Rhythm Roulettes out!
I've never clicked on a video so fast in my life
It's about time Jake One got on this!
I have waited a long time for this video
no one can use the ASR quite like jake one. been waiting for this for a minute
Do DJ Quik!!
Or DJ Battlecat
bro i was literally abt to post that
quik doesn't sample that much
umm yeah he does most of the beats he makes are sampled based. what are you talking about?
the earlier part of his catalog used a lot of sampling, but over the years his music took a turn and was more original composition. not saying he doesn't use samples, but I think he even said it himself in an interview that he doesn't like sampling other people's music much anymore.
I waited so much for this one!!!!!!
Dope Work!
This is what I like. Sampling from every record. 🔥
"it's kinda hard, actually" :D
i love watchin producers work on asr and mpc the button clickin is hypnotic lol
I pressed like before I even seen the video, One of My Favorite Producer's Jake Uno
He is one of the best doing it right now. This guy is good. VERY good.
Liked it before watching also it's Jake one
Much love from Mozambique 🇲🇿 Africa
Jake one Is no doubt one of the GOATs man. This was 2 fire. Awesome workflow.
Is so much inspiration in this video from the plaques on the wall to the out dated hardware this is a true testament of its the man behind the machine not to mention jake one top 5
This honestly made me so fucking happy! Bless MassAppeal!!!
I want to see Alchemist do one!
Most underrated.. Jake One is one of my favorites.
