- Jake One and Mayer Hawthorne form like Voltron to become production duo Tuxedo, the latest contestants on MASS APPEAL's Rhythm Roulette. The pair stopped by Good Records-the shop, not the label-on East 5th Street in NYC, tied bandanas over their eyes, and grabbed up three random records to sample.
Although the soundtrack to Blue Thunder had them somewhat perplexed, they also came up with a 12-inch single by Logg, and the Gamble & Huff sure shot, MFSB's Love is the Message.
You already know Jake One's steez: from Chance the Rapper to 50 Cent, Drake, and Fun, the versatile Seattle beat smith gets it in wherever he feels. Hawthorne's light-hearted brand of blue-eyed soul has won him fans since his 2009 Stones Throw debut. Tuxedo's danceable tracks have an undeniable pop sensibility, they also show a heavy G-Funk and 80s electro influence, which shines through on the beat they built for us.
"We got the disco kick offa Log, the rest of the drums from MFSB, and kind of a dramatic sound offa the Blue Thunder soundtrack," said Hawthorne, who also added his soulful crooning to the sonic stew. "And that's how you craft a whompin'-ass banger, Tuxedo style."
Watch them work up top.

4:35 That smile you share with a friend when you about to create some fire 🔥
Anthony Contreras looks like not using the sample they're pointing out
So true :).
their chemistry and combined skill is unbelievable
Tuxedo is keepin' the funk alive!
jaded incorporated too!
I love how hilariously easy it is for them to build a beat from scratch using minimal samples... crazy
jake and mayer just styled all over 85% of all past RR's.
100%
3:03 lol
Jake "who was dancing to this?"
Mayer "Tweakers"
Can't say I was expecting this, but I was definitely the most excited about this episode when I saw the title.
God Bless Mass Appeal. May Mass Appeal Live on.
to bad busy cant sample
"busy works" is trash. a true bum when it comes to beats and youtube
ghost _ no one asked for ur opinion
fuck yourself a little bit
happy late birthday busy works! thanks to your tutorial ive been impressing my colleagues at the studio!
sold my juno yesterday and now i found out about that bass trick. God has a wicked sense of humor sometimes. smh
He is simply telling you to and go buy your Juno back.
lol, mine is even crazier. My dad named me JUNO in 1979, came to america working at pathmark when i was 16 as a cashier this lady noticed my name tag and started telling me about this Roland keyboard name Juno. a few weeks later My dad went to a garage sales and bought me a JUNO-106 which was my first keyboard. I sold it a couple years later to guitar center, biggest mistake I've ever made.
Ten Slider mines crazier I was also named Juno, I was given up for adoption as my mom was so inpirspired by the movie Juno, my step dad was a real muso, mainly guitars but had a Roland Juno-106 he took from the studio while working for Juno records in the UK, Im pissed to find out about this bass trick as ive just finished my gender reassignment surgery and have changed me name to Nord. FML
Lol, so you're with Korg now.
Ten Slider Nord
JESUS!!!...Pinch me. Two of my favorite artists about to kill a beat. Folks forever sleeping on Mayer Hawthorne. Dude not only sings but produces and djs.
True story! All the way back from when he was "DJ Haircut" with Athletic Mic League ;)
is this real? pinch my dick. I don't believe it.
This is just unfair lol
Mayer Hawthorne's "Where Does this Door Go" album is godly 🔥🔥🔥
Busy Works Beats .TV fire

Absolutely! Dope album from start to finish..
Ay ur my hero
Mayer Hawthorne is so incredibly talented, it makes me sad more people don't appreciate/know about his music. Proud to be a fan from the first album.
Hands down one of the dopest rhythm roulette episodes! 💯
this and the 9th wonder Rhythm Roulettes are my favorites. now we need a Boonie Mayfield one!
You are the man to know about Boonie!

honestly one of the best Rhythm Roulette so far
i love their chemistry. that's what dreams are made of
The best notification u can get on your phone is when there's a new RR video. 🏌
nothing on this planet more satisfying than when a beat starts to cook up like at 5:27
I love the amount of head nodding in agreement
I have waited for this my entire life *cries tears of joy*.
Another dope episode. The chemistry between Jake & Mayer is undeniable.
Somewhere in California, snoop is C walking in dickie suit listening to this
Their chemistry together is insane I loved this, probably my second favorite episode next to 9th
an appreciation for gamble and huff and leroy burgess. nice! most rhythm roulette producers don't even know who they are. that logg record is boogie gold. a paradise garage classic.
have a feeling this is gonna be my favorite rhythm roulette
that feeling was spot on
The modern day Hall & Oates #fuxwiththetux
Tremaine Triplett hahahahahaha you ain't wrong
That look they gave each other at 4:35 says it all
wow this was better than I could have imagined! Never seen so much care gone into a RL video and loved to see their production process.
Damn, saw "Jake One" and clicked instantly. His Snare Jordan beat making videos are incredible.
Still got an autographed Mayer Hawthorne vinyl from just before he was popping! Nice to see him taking his craft up to production with a solid guy like Jake One. Keep it up!
No drum kits needed. Take notes young Jedi's it's the process
It's creativity
Sampling a loop is the same thing he just created his own kit with it.. im not sure that you know what a drum kit is. Or are you talking about drum loops that come in sample kits?
Killuminati Maccabee not really. It is, but it’s being traditional for the sake of being traditional. It really isn’t any better or worse if you do it. Just more time consuming. But back when you had SPs you had no choice but to get everything out of the record
Prototype 81 I think he was talking about how jake one sampled himself beat boxing
@@zachvitatoe7163 I think it means, find the sounds yourself
This beat made my Friday THAT much better!!!!
One of my favorites, it sounds like a band, nice job guys
I love to see Jake One still using the ASR. A lot to be said about mastering a piece of gear and sticking with it. Dug this one.
Johnny Spectra As does Alchemist and some others
I wasn’t sure what to expect since I was under the impression Mayer hawthorne didn’t use like samples, but this one completely blew me away. He took the drums, aesthetics, and any smaller sound bites that matched pitch (which he found by ear) and blended them all together for a funky result. What a trip.
Super funky. I feel the west coast vibes! One of the best Rhythm Roulettes for sure
Never thought I'd see Tuxedo on here and fuck did they kill it. 🔥
incredible workflow, really great seeing these guys in the studio. also a funky-ass beat!
chemistry is crazy with these two
Best rhythm roulette yet. these two are a power duo fo sho
My god they make everything look so easy :OOOO
Smoothsteps it is easy if you know your shit
Imagine if Nate Dogg was still physically here.
Nino Brown I wouldn't get a lil sad when I hear "number 1" "ain't no fun" or "regulate". He had a unique feel to his music.
Nino Brown Damn him snoop and Anderson park on this would be dope
Damn I miss Nate..

That was fun to watch
Sick. Reminds me of the good old days of hard work in the studio with my homies.
You know you're good at what you do when you make something this good and make it look fucking easy. This was a fun watch; not only for the track, which was dope, but to see how easily you two worked in the lab stitching all the disparate parts together into a single, funky ass, cohesive whole.
