Tuxedo: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- Bobby Carter | July 17, 2017 - The pairing of Tuxedo is a natural feel in person, but highly unlikely on paper. Seattle-based producer Jake One has a who's-who client list, from Rick Ross to 21 Savage - while DJ, singer-songwriter and producer Mayer Hawthorne is a renaissance soul man from Ann Arbor, Michigan. They stealthily debuted three tracks on SoundCloud in 2013 with only a black square stamped "Tuxedo" as the cover art, leaving fans wondering where this new funk was coming from. A few months later they unveiled their identities along with a debut self-titled LP, resurrecting a sound popularized by greats like The Gap Band, The Fatback Band and Roger Troutman.
When Tuxedo arrived at NPR and Mayer Hawthorne spied a small 'Ho!' button sitting on Bob Boilen's desk, he immediately beamed. "We use a big 'Ho!' button on tour," he said. They didn't bring a drummer, opting for a boombox - yes, a real boombox playing a real cassette tape, kids - and it was nostalgic delight from the start of the cassette's hiss. The band was tight as ever, while their ace in the hole, Gavin Turek provided dance moves and the sweetest harmonies. Tuxedo set things off with a fan favorite from their first album, along with two from their latest, before closing it out with a red light special. It's one thing to go against the grain for the sake of it - and another completely make it good. In this Tiny Desk concert, Tuxedo accomplished both.

@Lord Cregan Stark EEEEEEH. They only use one mic for the colors sessions and backing tracks and it lacks range in genres. Tiny desk has their work vastly more cut out for them in a unconventional place with the range in music which can please just about anyone.
The only thing was the Mike´s mic in the last song.

Whenever I see Mayer perform I truly don't understand why the UK has got its head up its butt and ignores him. We like a pop tune, we like happiness, we love 80's 90's style so what's not to love? Odd. The mans a huge talent.

So many great late 70's and early 80's R&B influences in Tuxedo's music. Their guitar picking reminds me of Nile Rodgers (Chic) and the synth bass on the second track reminds me of S.O.S. band.

Love that 1970's - 1980's feel to this band. That "bass line" and the girl's backup in the last song reminded me of Rick James 1980's song "MaryJane" lol

Christian Wunderlich was in Mayer Hawthorne's touring band "The County," and his solos on live versions of "Reach Out Richard" from MH's cruelly underrated "Where Does this Door Go" are understated perfection. The best one of all was a live promotional performance for the Grammys, and it's vanished from RUclips 😢.
