Spears are rapidly becoming one of my favorite weapon types (the pike is my favorite right now. I'm definitely not compensating for anything haha). Nice fight!

The Pike is a great weapon, even moreso since DS2 when guard breaks became a mechanic. I heard some folks say that it's not really useful since the R2 hits upwards above but that didn't make sense to me when almost every enemy or boss is larger than the player character. The R2s give it more verticality and uses in a wider variety of scenarios.

Thought Vyke's spear wasn't much good outside of PvP since PvE enemies don't suffer madness but maybe I'll take another look.

As a status, Madness doesn't do anything in PvE, however, the Frenzy Flame is still fire damage and it's still a Great Spear. So fire damage, high stance damage and range makes for a good weapon overall.

Very cool fight. Since you are liking great spears so much, I'd suggest you take a look at the guardian's swordspear. Very cool weapon.

I really like the design of the Swordspear and it's the only halberd that swings fast while one-handed. I've tried practicing with it several times in the past but I couldn't click with it likely because of depth perception. Unlike other vertical-swinging weapons, the GSS does it in an unusual curve that messes up how I gauge spacing. The only time I could use it properly was relying solely on the running pokes and the weapon skill I had on it. So unless there's a way for me to cope with that issue, I currently holding off on it.

I definitely agree just enjoying a boss fight without trying to no hit it is the most fun way to play, everyone is too obsessed with no hit runs, which is stupid to me since 90% of the player base don't do no hit runs
And Can you explain in more detail the "they feel like weapons from the early days of souls games" cause I've heard things like that before but I've never understood that point of view, what aspect of ER weapons make them seem less commitle? I'm really curious, great fight btw

Fighting like this is more entertaining for me because I'm naturally a risk-taker and being reckless provides so much thrill for me. I don't personally find hitless fights to be interesting but I tried to make it a habit early in my channel's history to force myself to improve.
In regards to what I mentioned, it's the decision-making that comes up when you have to commit to an action. The entire Souls experience has always been about "risk-vs-reward" and this system was far more strict in the older games (e.g., Demon's Souls, Dark Souls 1, Dark Souls 2 slightly) because you stayed in place when performing any action, as well as, the lack of an omnidirectional movement system. The combat is actually a 3D turn-based combat system disguised as real-time action combat; which adds to that risk-vs-reward.
If you wanted to heal in combat, you had to strategise when was the best time to do so while avoiding hits. It was the same with attacks, if you performed a move, you were locked into that animation and couldn't move until it finished. Every action you took required strategy and awareness of your surroundings, the enemy(s) attacks, as well as your own. If you did the right thing at the wrong time, you got punished. If you did the wrong thing at the wrong time, you died.
That's not to say the later games weren't the same way, but From Software were more lenient with the risks you have to take as these games got more popular in order to make it more accessible to a wider audience. The casual audience prefers fast action combat like Bloodborne, DMC, etc, so FS leaned on that. The risk of poor decision-making became less strict when you have omnidirectional movement while healing and active frames in attack animations end sooner so you could roll out of a poorly-timed attack earlier. You are able to make more mistakes and receive less punishment for poor decisions. Colossals are the slowest weapons in the game but they still recover from their animations faster than a Great Spear. That's why I said it felt like the old days because you _have_ to commit to the animations of a Great Spear's attacks and if you made the wrong move or overextended at the wrong time, you're locked into it and how badly you're punished depends on what the enemy was doing.
Currently, Great Spears are the only weapon class that feels the most like the old system to me.

Gotta say, I don’t love the text on the vid. Would rather have it in caption or voice over.

Thanks for the feedback! May I ask why exactly? Is it because it distracts from the footage? If it does, would making the text smaller be more convenient, or would it be better to limit the text before and after the fights instead? I'm personally not sure how I want to handle the texts because they're mostly for me and I prefer hardtexts over softtexts for easy reference in the future. I don't mind putting in subtitles directly through RUclips but I'll have to consider it.

@@magnolia549 Hey, sorry I missed this reply. The way you did it on the most recent vid is much better! Much less distracting and didn't take as much away from the actual fight and I can still follow along with the commentary just fine.
