Thanks for clicking on the video and watching everyone! Remember, these Gravity Falls uploads will be happening twice a week, Tuesday and Friday, and also please try to not spoil future episodes in the comments. I would like to experience this show as blind as possible and these reactions are more fun when I have no idea what is going to happen. I appreciate it and thank you!

I've noticed that as soon as reactors seem to hit s2 just about all the comments flood with spoilers (or 'haha the whoever's reacting won't GET what I'm talking about so wink wink nudge nudge I can say anything) and it's like.... just let them experience this - we're getting to share the experience because they're taking the time to actually sit and share it with us. Stop trying to rush ahead or hint at stuff because it makes it stressful for everyone.

You think it was cruel for bill to treat Dipper’s body that way? Well in the real life copy of journal 3, Mabel finds a note that bill left in the car on the way to the show about how after the show was over, he was gonna throw dippers body off the water tower to make people think that he “lost his mind” and to leave dipper stranded in the mindscape forever since he would no longer be able to enter his now dead body. As if that wasn’t creepy enough, at the end of the note bill writes “want to join him shooting star?” Which basically implies that he wants Mabel to jump off the tower as well. …..How is this a kids show?

As many others, I was waiting for this episode. It's one of my favorites. I very much enjoy Bill as a villain. He's funny, but also disturbing, creepy and dangerous. Additionally, the implications of someone who capable of possessing people and finds inflicting pain funny is horrifying. Not to mention Dipper being trapped in the mindscape, desperately calling for help while no one can hear him? That would be terrifying as an adult, let alone a twelve year old kid.
Side note, a kind of small fun fact: The yellow eyes and slit pupils are actually visible in-universe (as confirmed by the real life Journal 3 edition) and not just a cue for the audience. However, they are very hard to see (one has to get close to Bipper and check his eyes in order to notice them). I just really liked this detail because in many shows where possession or something along those lines is a thing, the character in question is often shown with strange eyes and no one notices for... no reason. The Journal actually provides us with a believable explanation.
03:03 Also, can I just say that I love this little scene with Bill's shadow? It instantly ramps up the episode's relevance and seriousness in just a few seconds.
3:19 The wiki states Mabel's older by five minutes.
Finally, as others have mentioned in the comments, Journal 3 also shows that, after the episode, Mabel sort of came down from her Gabe-high and felt really bad for not taking the situation seriously enough (ESPECIALLY after she found Bill's note).

    • @MikeyVenture

Fun fact whenever Dipper rubbed his eyes before Bill appeared, that was him actually falling asleep, which is why the laptop only started the data erase countdown right before Bill appeared. Why would the laptop only say there were too many failed entries after hundreds of attempts? Most laptops allow 5 or 10 attempts, why hundreds? Because there was never actually a limit in the first place.
He fell asleep in that moment, Bill made it look like there was a timelimit in the dream to create pressure, and then tricked him into taking his body by using the situation with Mabel to make wordplay about "puppets" when he really wanted to possess him.
Also, Bill's deal said that he had to give a hint in return for a puppet, so what did he do to hold up his end? 🤔

It always bugged me that they used Time Traveler's Pig and the Deep End as examples of Dipper sacrificing something because TTP was him using time travel to prevent Robbie from asking Wendy out when we know he'd just try again later and he's not letting Wendy make her own choice. Alex Hirsh even had to directly state that Dipper was in the wrong in that scenario. And in the Deep End, Mabel was sincerely trying to help Mermando get home which is way more important than Dipper getting to spend a bit more time hanging out with Wendy and he was immediately told he lost nothing anyway since Wendy was fired right after.

    • @iLiketoLaugh123
      @iLiketoLaugh123 2 года назад +36

Counterpoint, it's BILL who is using those as an example. It doesn't have to be right, he's just reminding Dipper of somewhat difficult decisions he's had to do because of Mabel and, even though Dipper never shows that he's unhappy with them, they were associated with emotions of regret in the moment. Bill shows him those moments, calls them a sacrifice and uses the emotional vulnerability created to pressure him further into the deal.
(As we can see, it worked on a large part of the fandom as well)

Bill is terrifying. Him abusing Dipper's body is very uncomfortable to watch. You can tell he has zero regards for anyone which is to be expected but it's another thing to see it, especially involving children 😅
Also, yes Mabel was going to give him the book. He's a master manipulator, making them second guess themselves and use their wants to do so. They are kids and are more easily manipulated into doing things even if they know it's wrong. Dipper knows how Bill is but he was desperate and Bill knew he was so he made a deal. Mabel was desperate for her play to go well and Bill tried threatening it knowing how important it was to her. The scene of Mabel running around while Bill chased her in Dipper's body is hilarious tho!

Bill Cipher is not just the villain for season 2, he's the main villain for the whole series; and I’m so proud of saying this, Bill Cipher is my favorite villain of all time. I’m glad that you don’t know what to call him because no one knows for sure what he is. Fun Fact: Bill Cipher was created specifically because creator Alex Hirsch didn’t think Gideon was evil enough and he thought Bill could really be more evil. Also, he created Bill after the Eye of Providence which can be seen on the back of the one dollar bill and he would be named Bill after the dollar.
CIPHER UPDATE: You have already been given a lot of the ciphers in this episode, but there were some that you missed. The key word, CIPHER, can be seen in the mirror’s reflection when Bill is slapping himself. Also, at 3:14, the list of possible passwords Dipper has have ciphers on them. One says, “KFIV VMVITB, MLG HPRM ZMW YLMV IRHRMT ORPV GSV HSVKZIW GLMV” and it decodes to “PURE ENERGY, NOT SKIN AND BONE RISING LIKE THE SHEPARD TONE”, and there’s a second one that says, “ZLGGOH VKLIWHU ZKDWHYV EHDUR” and it decodes to, “WIDDLE SHIFTER WHATEVS BEARO”.
Fun Fact: this is the first episode with the government agents hidden in the background. You can find them somewhere in the audience at the puppet show, but you would have to rewatch this episode and watch real closely.
NOTE TO SELF: if you’ve already seen episode 5 for season 2, don’t get too excited for episode 6 because that’s actually one of the worst episodes in the series.

The thing with Dipper and Mabel when they argue is that they both think they’re doing what is right. The difference comes in with what they think is right.
Dipper looks at things from a logical perspective, so even in instances where he goes overboard and gets a little greedy, he’s usually not wrong. The main exceptions with this involve Wendy because she’s his crush.
But then when you look at what Mabel thinks is right, it’s almost always what is best for her, not necessarily the people around her, and she often causes people around her to suffer because of it.
That being said, I still love Mabel, and I think that the things she does are very understandable for a 12 year old.

Hi Mike! I just wanted to say that I’ve been making my way through your Gravity Falls videos this week and they are some of the most enjoyable reactions I’ve seen! It’s always really fun to see people still discovering what an amazing series Gravity Falls was (and still is!) even when the fandom has dwindled over the past few years.
You seem to have such a fun time watching the show and just genuinely enjoying it, as well as noticing the bits and pieces of the overarching plot threads.
I especially enjoyed how you picked up on a lot of the show’s central themes very early on in the first episodes of season one! And I appreciated that you noted how both Dipper and Mabel have selfish tendencies even if they express them differently. Mabel tends to get some weirdly vehement hate beyond just character analysis from portions of the fandom (which seems more prevalent on RUclips than other platforms). I find it sad that with all of the awesome Gravity Falls fandom trends that have faded into obscurity, the disproportionate Mabel hate is something that has persisted. Mabel’s chaos, enthusiasm, flaws, heart and mistakes have always intrigued me and are super interesting to explore both within the context of the show and in extra-canon fan content (I mayyyyy do a bit of this). Personally, she became one of my favorite characters because of her complex traits, not in spite of them.
To me, Gravity Falls is a show that uses absurdist humor to tell a complex and engaging story of very flawed characters making questionable choices and dealing with the consequences, some of which are much more far-reaching than others.
I look forward to catching up on your reactions and watching more as you post them, especially as the heavy season 2 lore starts to ramp up!

I appreciate the kind words! And I find Mabel incredibly compelling and I love how much she embraces who she is. She does make mistakes, like all of us do, but I also don’t understand some of the negativity she receives by many. I honestly love all of the main characters of the show

@@MikeyVenture Thank you for your reply! I love pretty much all of the characters as well! They are all just so much fun and various levels of unhinged! There’s a lot more that can be discussed but that will have to wait until further episodes, so as not to get into spoilery territory. What I will say is that most everything in Gravity Falls is very deliberately crafted and it’s honestly as much fun to rewatch because you get to watch the story unfold with a new perspective!

What I've never really seen brought up for Sock Opera is the fact that it's a mirror of Time Traveller's Pig. In both scenarios, one sibling has extremely unrealistic goals to woo their crush, to the point that they consider letting their other half suffer so they can obtain something (or more specifically someone) that they really have no business with. Hell, Dipper breaks Time Law and gets Blendin arrested because of his jealousy!
I think people get disproportionally mad at Mabel because her goals aren't relevant to the main plot or characters. We excuse Dipper's selfishness and putting the people around him in danger (Summerween Trickster, the Bunker, time travel) because it's WENDY, a consistent and engaging character of her own. But at this point in the series, the plot's stakes are unknown to the kids. Dipper feels compelled to find the author for personal fulfillment, he doesn't know about what's in the basement. There's always been weirdness in Gravity Falls, him finding the answer isn't going to solve an impending problem (to his knowledge). But since the series is tied to unlocking the mysteries these kids are being put through, we feel compelled to side with him and dismiss Mabel. If this series were titled "Mabel's Quest for Summer Romance," then Dipper would be cast as the idiot brother who goes looking for trouble and puts everyone in danger to satisfy his inane curiosity.
TL;DR: They're both kids, and kids are selfish screw ups. That's how they learn.

Look can everyone stop crapping on Mabel for being selfish?
They both make mistakes in this area. Sure this is a more serious situation but Mabel didn’t know exactly what was going on because Dipper hadn’t been informing her of the seriousness of it.
(And was Mabel just supposed to automatically know? There’s been so many times where Dipper has prioritised Wendy over Mabel, only to realise later. This is Mabel’s episode of doing the same.)
Of course this was more important but really Dipper was getting just as obsessed I mean there was no time limit on the password he didn’t need to figure it out right away, at the same time I totally understand his excitement, but still. I dunno I mean in the time travelers pig Dipper was in the wrong anyway and the pool episode saving mermando was way more important than Dipper keeping his job that he only got to spend time with a girl... kind of familiar hey? Mabel asked if they could do it after the show because she can’t read Dippers mind so she didn’t realise how much danger they were in. Once he clarified she went and risked her life to help him.
They are just siblings who make mistakes and annoy each other and can be selfish and obsessed but at the bottom of it they just love each other and will do anything they can for one another.
We’re biased toward Dipper in this scenario because we too want the mysteries to be solved but we can’t just assume Mabel knows things that Dipper never told her. They are both equally messy and beautiful characters and I don’t get why people drag Mabel through way more crap than Dipper!

    • @souhiyori8032
      @souhiyori8032 2 года назад +6

Idk but Mabel was more in the wrong here tho. Isnt Dipper being not in his own body already such a big problem? And they both know how crazy dangerous it is to make a deal with Bill so she should be aware of the severity of the situation when Dipper came to her as a puppet, telling her he was tricked.
While she did try to help, she didnt take it too seriously. She also ALMOST gave the journal to Bill, that even she probably knows she shouldnt. Why she would know? Because she already encountered Bill of course. Giving that journal wouldve sealed Dipper's fate (death of his body and being trapped in the mindscape forever)
Note that im talking about only this episode. Im not saying Mabel is worse. They both are selfish in their own accords. Dipper had his moments too.

The Gabe part of this episode is hard for me to watch. I'm actually *seriously* against the whole random crush thing. I hate the trope where a character sees someone and instantly thinks they're "in love" just because they like their appearance. It bothers me even more when that character is willing to lie and/or change who they are just to impress this person they don't even know, as if it's worth loving someone who doesn't think you're already good enough as you are. I know Mabel is 12, but I was 12 before and I always felt this way. I was never interested in anything less than true love, a deep spiritual bond, something that lasts forever. Actually that's why I hate all teen shows where the characters are getting in random relationships with people just because of their looks, or some other shallow reason like their accent, or because they have a car, or play guitar, etc. It especially bothers me when the character is eager to kiss people, and kisses more than one person throughout the show, even knowing they're just another temporary crush and they'll probably be with someone else next week. I never understood why anybody is like that...

    1. there’s a sort of trivia/behind the scenes special called “between the pines” that’s a good watch later down the line. it was released right before the final episode aired, so you could either react to it before the finale or after you’ve finished the entire series.
    2. once you’ve finished the entire series i 100% recommend rewatching it at some point on your own time. it’s amazing to rewatch once you have all the clues put into place. no spoilers for what those answers are but it’s definitely a series you can rewatch and find new things!

The main issue with this show is that the sentence "You just gotta roll with Mabels craziness, its what makes life worth living" isnt just the opinion of Wendy, its more or less the creators statements to the fans. Mabel does a lot of terrible stuff and is generally an irritating character in a lot of situations. And other than Dipper, Wendy or even Stan, she doesnt learn anything throughout this show.
The ending of this episode feels more like a concession, more like "fine, now Mabel gave something up" coming from the creators rather than any meaningful change. And I can explain what I mean with that when you finished the show.
