      fun fact, in some episodes there are hints about Stan's childhood.
      in the episode where they went into his mind to stop Bill, we can see 2 swing sets. 1 of them being broken.
      and there is an episode where they watched Ducktective, and it had been revealed that Ducktective had a twin brother. (everyone already saw that coming though. lol)

    This has been pointed out a lot in the fandom. But part of the reason I and many others believe Mabel trusted Stan is because he said “please” and as we and Mabel learned in S1E13(boss Mabel) stan has trouble saying please

    Fun fact: many fans. Myself included. Already had the "Stan has a twin" theory in our cork boards. So when you find the fake IDs. We were all freaking out because we thought that maybe we were wrong and that Stan wasn't their uncle. Which made the final reveal and confrontation that much more emotional. And validating for all us Stan is a twin theorists who got laughed at. 😅

    • @jeffbrehove2614
      @jeffbrehove2614 2 года назад +62

      At the same time, Dipper and Mabel are twins. So not hard to think the twinning mutation runs in the Pines Family so the theory is not out there.
      But what's more interesting was the possible parallels between Stan-Ford and Dipper-Mabel. Broken families make great drama.

    • @willpina
      @willpina 2 года назад +44

      The part where Stan says that it's unnatural for siblings to get along as good as Mabel and Dipper do, is the part where I put together that Stan had a twin or at least a brother, who was the author. But I had never thought of that being the case before. Mostly because you'd think the kids' mom would have mentioned it or had pictures of both her brothers.

    • @gummysnacksandknives9229
      @gummysnacksandknives9229 2 года назад +14

      So when this episode first came out I was watching all of those videos and I was thinking oh maybe but probably not but I thought it was a very good possibility but I wasn't really incorporating the theories into me watching the show but the first thought I had when I saw that they were twins was "oh my gosh they were right this is amazing"

      @@willpina Spoilers!
      Just some corrections that might help it make more sense: Stan and Ford are the brothers of Dipper and Mabel's paternal grandfather, Sherman Pines, so they would be the uncles of Dipper and Mabel's father not the brothers of their mother. There's no official confirmation of whether Sherman is older or younger than Stan and Ford (the show seems to imply younger but that creates some weird timing) but either way he didn't seem to interact with Stan and Ford very much so I think it seems pretty plausible that he and subsequently his son didn't talk about them very much or have any photos of them.

  • @Neck41
    @Neck41 2 года назад +287

    Fun fact: This episode went through many cut/deleted content. One of the biggest changes left out an important item that many fans wondered about. Originally Dipper and Mabel was supposed to be detained in an old abandon school, where they are waiting for CPS to pick them up. They see Stan's arrest on TV and that's how they think about the security tapes at the Mystery Shack, and knows they need to escape. It's then Dipper uses the President's Key he got from the episode "Irrational Treasure" to unlock the door out of the room they were being held in. But due to episode length they had to scrap that scene, and change it to Manly Dan ramming the car off the road.

    • @Neck41
      @Neck41 2 года назад +64

      @@MikeyVenture Believe me many fans wanted to know how it was used, but it never did. If the episode was an hour long special I believe they would have. There are many different cut content that was thought up of but never used throughout the series.
      Like for example, did you know there was an original ending for the episode "Blendin's Game"? Originally the time wish was going to be used to give Soos a glimpse of the future. It shows him as a father and shows montages of all the different things he does with his own son, even showing Soos at his son's birthday. Showing he really didn't become like his own father and will be there for his own child.

    I absolutely LOVE this episode. The visuals, the music, the story of how everything comes together... One of the best episodes of this show, hands down.
    There was quite a bit of foreshadowing for Stan having a twin brother too. Like the glasses he found in the secret room in Carpet Diem (which he then proceeded to gloomily stare at) or how he had a broken swing set (the same one we see in the end credits scene) in his mindscape during Dreamscapers. We've also seen his brother before, twice. Once during Time Traveler's pig (he was the one looking out the door of the old Mystery Shack, not Stan) and he was also hidden in the background of one of Stan's childhood memories (the boxing one) with his face covered by a book.
    Another thing to note: Remember Wax Stan? And how Stan's first reaction upon seeing him was to completely freak out? And how wax figures are known to be very lifelike? Yeah.
    Cipher from the endcard of this episode: Thirty years and now he's back, the mystery in the Mystery Shack.

    The thing is though, even if Stan *was* telling the truth, the machine still could have destroyed the universe. Just because Stan had good intentions doesn't mean the side effects couldn't have been catastrophic. He could have destroyed the entire universe just to try to bring his brother back. Whether you trust him or not, that's a bit too much of a risk to take. It's not just one planet and everyone on it, but the universe itself. You can believe Stan is a good person but still think the universe is too much of a risk.

But even if the wisest man on Earth invented a time machine and promised us he would use it to bring about a golden age for humanity, but there was a 20% risk that he could create a paradox that would destroy the universe... I still think I would be advising against it, whether I trust that man or not. The thing is too, that warning was written by the man who built the machine in the first place, someone who clearly knows more than Stan. Stan just thought the risk was worth it, but that doesn't mean he knew the world/universe would be safe. So to me, this is about more than trusting Stan.

    CIPHER UPDATE: There is a cipher on one of the pages on the journal before the theme song. It decodes to, “MY COMPASS GOES HAYWIRE THE CLOSER I GET TO THEM. DOES THIS MEAN WHAT I THINK IT DOES? THE ANSWER MAY BE UNDERGROUND”. That same cipher also appears in the next episode. The key word, “STNLYMBL” can be seen on a picture of Stan’s license plate, but it can only be seen on the evidence board right after they get Stan’s fingerprints. There used to be another cipher in the interrogation room, but only Stan can see it and we learn it by listening to his thoughts. You can know what I’m talking about by typing in this link and watching what it leads to. ruclips.net/video/sAFpmbngWPU/видео.html. Another cipher appears on the agents’ license plates and it decodes to “GUVAMENT”. The end credits cipher decodes to, “THE ORIGINAL MYSTERY TWINS” and the cipher on the end picture decodes to, “THIRTY YEARS AND NOW HE’S BACK. THE MYSTERY IN THE MYSTERY SHACK.”.
    Fun Facts: The key on Mabel’s sweater means that she is the key to unlocking the portal. The whole thing with Manly Dan and Several Times was not in the original script. The original idea was that Dipper and Mabel would be locked in a schoolhouse and they escaped by using Quentin Trembely’s President’s Key, but that was cut for time concerns. It was very important that they noticed the invisible ink because if you remember correctly, Grunkle Stan didn’t know about the invisible ink and that’s why he had no idea why the portal was dangerous. You can’t blame Soos for fainting at the end. He’s just like all of us: a true fan of Gravity Falls. We all extremely enjoyed this. This is my favorite episode of Gravity Falls, a favorite for almost EVERYONE, and I sure hope it’s your favorite. Or at least in your top 5.

    Some fun facts (more can be found on the GF wiki page for this episode):
    The scene in which the author was revealed was animated in the US rather than Korea, specifically by Dana Terrace, with the keyframes done by Matt Braly. Animating key scenes in the US rather than in Korea is common for the series.
    The authors identity had been planned since the initial pitch to Disney.
    Stan telling Mabel please is a callback to what he learned in Boss Mabel.

    Funfact: everyone already knew of the possibikity of a twin brother which started in S1E9 where they time travelled to the mystery shack in winter where we see who we assumed as Grunkle Stan, in S1E16, we see stan swipe a pair of glasses when they entered the secret room and later on in the episode we see him look longingly to the pair of glasses when everyone was busy switching bodies in the secret room and even at S1E2 with the plate number in stans car makes sense now with that possibility. And now S1E3 with Wax stan finally makes sense where it seemed like he overreacted to it but no it seems like its genuine.
    This all leads to what you mightve already heard about how Alex "leaked" a bait post about mcgucket being the author to throw nostly everyone off the scent and the last scene in S2E7 became a slap in the face to everyone and he later posted a tweet that showed the steps he made to make the fake post from long ago and it was amazing.

    The original title of this episode was "the Return of Stan"... which obviously got changed for being a pretty big spoiler for the ending. The current title was a little nod to fan theorists who were likely aware of the "Stan is not what he seems" cipher in every episode
    There were a bunch of deleted scenes, especially with the kids getting stuck in an ol' timey schoolhouse and them using the president's key to escape. Stan's scene of him going "I'm guiltoccent! Innoguilty!" was pretty different with him acting way more cocky towards the agent before he desperately tries to get to the radio the moment he's left alone.
    With the twin reveal, this was probably the most popular theory in the fandom with a bunch of clues throughout the series; Stan's license plate, the appearance of the Stan in TTP being noticeably different from the Stan shown in Boyz Crazy and TTP!Stan having the glasses from Carpet Diem, the identical boy in Dreamscaper's boxing flashback... People picked up on the hidden number of fingers and cleft chin and hung onto the theory tight even after the fake leak
    There's other things like Stan's reactions to Wax Stan/his funeral/Carpet Diem's hidden room and also the many times Stan is shown with a reflection

    1 The wax episode- It make sense on the way Stan interact with his wax double and why he was moaning for its "death".
    2 Time Travelling Pig- Was that Stan that appear out of the Shack when the two were travelling throught different time?
    3 The Freaky Friday capert episode- Stan took a glasses that was mystery room which he said he never been into before. Not only that but later on the episode, he was in his couch starting at it while holding it.

    Dude, this was SO satisfying to watch! You're a great reactor to watch, and your excitement and investment really comes through. I can't tell you how many times I've rewatched this episode, especially those last 5 minutes. And yet, watching it along with you now, I could honestly FEEL that same excitement and euphoria. You're completely right, everything about this ep fires on all cylinders. I'm sure you noticed even more when editing this together, how gorgeous it is -- like Scary-oke, they really pushed the limits of dramatic lighting, but even more-so. And the music of course is killer. The stakes are SO HIGH, and yeah, by bringing it down to a conflict within the family, the TENSION in that last scene is just incredible. And then, what a pay-off!
    But this is Gravity Falls, and as you said, it's only the middle of the season. The show chose to do this reveal NOW, because the story still has places to go. And I'm not gonna say more than that, but given how great the show has been up to this, you have to KNOW that what's to come is gonna be awesome. :)
    (Good for you for staying unspoiled, and good for your friend for vetting comments for you! I have to tell you, though -- I binged the series right after the finale, and I was actually spoiled for this and pretty much everything big in season 2. And yet, these eps were still super exciting to watch, and hit me hard! I think that's another testament to this show's writing. Even when you know what's coming, the WAY it's done is extremely gripping. I'm just saying this to compliment how good the show is -- I do think that if you can experience it the way you are, unspoiled, that's the best way to do it.)

    This episode is a collective fandom favorite for very good reason. The crew really went above and beyond in crafting something amazing. I’ve seen it multiple times and I’m still blown away by it. The use of lighting, colors and music gets me every time.
    Gravity Falls is a show that really does buildup and payoff right. As you mentioned, there are a lot of shows that don’t stick the landing. At the time I sat down and actually watched Gravity Falls all the way through(around the time the finale aired) I was floored because I’d become pretty disillusioned about TV series storytelling. In this single episode, I was given everything I needed to understand the bond between the Pines family, the mysteries of the town, the stakes of these events, and it blew me away.
