Hey everyone! Join me as I continue my journey in Gravity Falls today! We learn that Stan has a brother?!!? And that is who he has been doing all of his shady stuff for??
Twins Dipper and Mabel Pines are sent to spend the summer with their great-uncle, Grunkle Stan, in the mysterious town of Gravity Falls, Ore. Grunkle Stan has the kids help him run The Mystery Shack, the tourist trap that he owns. The twins try to adapt to the weird surroundings but sense there is something strange about Gravity Falls and begin to unlock its secrets. When Dipper uncovers a cryptic journal that offers insight into the town's mysteries, he and Mabel use it and their enthusiastic desire to vanquish evil to battle the imminent mysteries that surround them.

Knowing Stan’s backstory, it makes sense why he was looking sadly at the glasses he found in the secret room from the episode “Carpet Diem”, and why he got so scared by (and eventually got so attached to) the wax Stan that Mabel made, he thought he had seen his brother at first glance
The show was full of foreshadowing to his backstory from the beginning, another example is how Stan knew that Gideon wasn’t a real psychic when he called him “Stanford”, and how Stan’s car’s license had “STNLYMBL”, meaning “STANLEYMOBILE”
We also learn why he’s so obsessed with money because his dad kicked him out until he made a lot of money
“Why’s the intro shorter?!” This tends to happen when something big is about to happen in certain shows and most likely, audiences would skip the intro to get into the plot.
I think it's also to fit more time in for the episode.
It also allows them to fit up to 30 sec to 1 min more into the episode. That doesn't seem like a lot of time, but it can be valuable if they use it wisely!
And by God, DuckTales has like three the original, the shortened one, and the extremely short one
It was for more time to animate (because of commercials they had limited time and it's too short to make it double length of 44 minutes). If it had only released on Disney+ (which didn't exist yet) we would have gotten the better longer one every time lol
I love the detail that Stan said “please” when begging Mabel. This puts some insight on why Mabel trusted Stan because she knows from the Boss Mabel episode that Stan has trouble saying “please”

Gotta love how this explains so much without showing everything; stanley's obsessive greed, the creation of the blind-eye society, the multiple hidden rooms in the shack, how the townsfolk had changed, and why the journals have half their notes in invisible ink.

Yes I guess, but I'm referring to our ability to deduce what's been happening in full, as these are the final prices we needed to realize the implications, because not everything is revealed later and some of it makes more sense when you rewatch the series.
For a nonspoilery example lets consider stanley's obsessive greed, we see him all summer being a cheapskate regarding his business, and even when the story isn't focused on him we see him trying to use his cunning charisma to gain wealth. In these two episodes we find out stanley was blacklisted from his family entirely, one of those events that'll scar you for life, but why was he exiled? For denying his parents potential millions, and not to return until he could financially make up for ruining his brother's future. What had he been doing before arriving in gravity falls? Roaming the world often scamming people for his own get rich quick schemes on failed psychical products. However after arriving in gravity falls he found he was surrounded by the metaphysical and supernatural, a perfect backdrop to market things that he could make up without harming anybody else. In sock opera we see stanley compulsively trying to make money, by filming mable & dipper brawling on stage knowing he can sell it, as we've also seen prior there's a tv station that airs children fighting. There's a better example in a future episode but I won't spoil that one lol.
That's what I'm getting at, we already have seen enough important moments to put together the big picture, how the events and people are connected. But if you're still wondering about why I mentioned the invisible ink notes, consider how stanford is portrayed through these two episodes, and remember what horrific events we've already seen the kids deal with.

Short intros is a very common thing in most TV shows. If the episode is too long to include the intro in their time slot on live tv, they’ll just cut or remove the intro to make enough room.
When I witness Stan’s brother for the first time, I was shocked and frozen in my chair once he appeared. 😶 my roommate had to smack me back to life to make me move.

23:25 I don't think Stan communicated with his brother at all. There's no indication of it. Ford just fell through the portal and that was that, they didn't see or hear from each other in 30 years. For all Stan knew, Ford might have been dead (might be the reason he got so emotional during Wax Stan's funeral).
Yeah, I hope Cody reads this, because there won't be further info on this in the rest of the show. The show expects you to conclude that Ford was missing through the Portal for 30 years, and Stan had no idea. (Stan does even say during his narration "I didn't know if he was dead, or alive in some distant galaxy.")

Yeah that's why Stan needed the journals. If he could communicate with Ford, he could just tell him how to operate the machine (though he might choose not to given his reaction to Stan reactivating it at all, I think he thought being saved was too great a risk because of Bill)

I’ve seen ideas that Stanford was being an interdimensional bounty hunter/vigilante, fighting for survival across the multiverse. I kinda prefer this interpretation, as it would explain his gear
The answers are all in the real version of the journal 3, and yes, one of the things that are confirmed is that he travelled within dimensions
The Deluxe Physical version of Journal 3 explains some of it, one major thing is that Ford was actually seconds away from killing Bill with his Quantum Destabilizer before Stanley activated the portal. It’s the reason he immediately punched him and was so pissed off.

There’s a few interesting things. You normally get so sucked in by Stanford’s appearance you assume that things fell on Stanley’s fault for the events. But when you really pay attention, almost all of it truly was on Stanford.
His science project was so unstable it all shorted out from an indirect table smack. And as the builder, he would likely know how hard it was to keep it stable. And it’s not Stanley’s style to go covert sabotage, he’d more likely punch it or throw it and break it completely. And Stanley even put everything he saw messed up back in place and TRIED to make sure the project was fine. And his reaction got Stanley DISOWNED.
Stanley didn’t have ANYTHING when he was kicked out, hence why he resorted to all his gambling and grifting. THAT was on Stanley he chose that path, but to actually have enough to LIVE, you can see why.
What happens when he’s called to Stanford? He’s told remember our treasure hunting dream? Split it up, I refuse to tell you why, and go to the edge of the world. By YOURSELF. Then when Stanley decides to burn it (which fair considering Stanford didn’t let him know in a way he understood and it was technically a solution) and instead Stanford burns HIM (on accident) and the retaliation leads to the portal incident.
And Stanley was smart enough to ACTUALLY get him out, and spent 30 years of never giving up to get him out. And the 1st thing he does when he sees Stanford is try to hug him. Only to be punched in the face and be told “You should’ve known better than to save me”
Stanley might be a lowlife, but he cares FAR greater than he shows with the lengths he is willing to go to back up his brother.
Well to be it not really all entirely Stanford's fault he worked really hard to go that college and from his perspective Stanley was trying to hold him back. The fact when confronted about the broken machine Stanley makes a joke instead of really apologizing. I feel sorry for both the Pines brothers because both had to live hard lives Stanford being called a six fingered freak while Stanley being mocked for not being as smart as his brother.
@@skylerloggins4902 I won’t deny how things looked from Stanford’s perspective, but based on all the context of their life, Stanley would never actually get in the way. Pride is a big theme of this show that leads to most of the conflict. And I definitely feel it’s Stanford’s pride that is the bigger catalyst here.

Let me tell you,when I first saw the ending of ep 11 I was ✨SHOOK✨
He may be a sleazy, cunning, underhanded grifter, but you gotta give Stanley credit. He's shown that he actually is brilliant and resourceful when he actually tries. He concocted ingenious plots and scams, albeit for what little he could swindle out of people just to survive. He tricked everybody into thinking he was a different person for decades WHILE keeping an underground bunker in the shack a secret. He figured out how Gideon was able to deceive the entire town. He was smart enough to reactivate the portal. He stalled for just enough time to use the gravity anomalies to his advantage to escape the precinct AND throw the government off his trail. In his own way, he really is (arguably) just as much of a mastermind as his brother.

i still remember the days when the hype of stans brother reveal was so amazing and popular, now you kinda were confused which makes sense considering this is so many years later lol
No insult intended to Cody, but it also depends on how much you're trying to "solve" the mystery as you go along, rather than watching and waiting for the answer. I think that when you're watching the show so quickly (2 eps a week, or more?, as Cody is doing), the info comes at you pretty fast, and you don't spend as much time as the fandom did poring over all of the little clues and trying to come up with theories. It's still a huge twist and a very exciting moment -- the writing and entire production of NWHS is incredible -- but it's not the same as finally providing an answer to a fandom that has been theorizing about who the Author is for like 3 years.

i told you bro this episode was quite emotional, glad you finally reacted to it and just man some lines drove me close to tear especially during the final countdown and how they were all in a confrontation between trusting or not believing stan which was so heartbreaking

Fiddleford actually created the memory gun long before what he saw at the other side of the portal. during a specific trip through the forest, Stanford and Fiddleford came across a Gremloblin and when it looked into Fiddleford's eyes he saw his greatest fear. Fiddleford became so traumatized that he invented a machine that could erase his memories. He hired construction workers to help him create the portal then erased their minds to keep the job hushed up and then erased Stanford's so he wouldn't scold him for it.
I so glad the author is revealed to be Stan's brother! He has six fingers just the hand on the journal!

I can’t remember the name of it but u can search up on RUclips gravity falls and Rick and morty crossover and fords talking to Rick it’s the episode where aliens go into ricks mind and it shows a Rick that’s not selfish and Beth and his wife died so he got the portal gun somehow I can’t remember how and he becomes the Rick we know today drunk and careless and in one scene you can see Rick talking to ford in the background as they ordered intergalactic another dimension McDonald’s rip off
I think that while both brothers had a part to play in things going wrong I feel like Stanford's pride is really why he ended up at Backupsmore. Sure Stan might be the reason he couldn't go to his dream school but I also feel like there are options between West Coast Tech and Backupsmore.
Stanford is supposed to be really smart he could probably get into another good school so the fact that he ended up at Backupsmore gives me the impression that he didn't apply to any other good schools cus he thought he would get in for sure. Then when it goes wrong the application deadlines might have been over or even that he was self sabotaging by thinking if he couldn't go to his dream school he might as well just go to a crappy (maybe cheap?) school instead.

Hey, you're lucky you could watch these two episodes together! When episode 11 premiered, they made us wait MONTHS before A Tale Of Two Stans came out!
I recommend rewatching some of the Gravity Falls scenes where the characters sound like they’re speaking gibberish, like when Gideon summoned Bill, but watch it in reverse… when you see that scene… you’ll understand why I recommend doing this 😊😊😊

I find Dipper's mistrust to be stupid, Stan's clearly an antihero, not villain. But then again, it's probably because Dipper has some "twin resentment" against Mabel & Stan is clearly the Mabel of his twin.
