so the reason she didn't say anything before she sang is because she is the 1st v-tuber to be showed here so she was nervous thinking people would not like her just for the fact she ain't showing her real face but everyone there and her manager said just said no need for pre-amble just knock them out with you voice. and so she did just that. suisei had some issues at first because she tried using a high pitch voice all the time but she had health issues with that and was forced to rest she slowly became more sure of her natural deeper voice and we all love her for that.
The silence after the first note to pay attention was great lol

Live Chat was fun to watch when this first streamed. There was a lot of doubters and "this is prerecorded" jokes even bordering on toxic...until Sui-chan belted that first note.
Suisei belongs to a group called Hololive, which has a lot of very talented singers. They work with a lot of well-known producers in Japan, some of whose work you've already listened to. It's crazy the amount of vocal talent there is in the vtuber world, can't wait for you guys to discover more.
The amount of talent only in hololive itself is mind-blowing, to think that many of these artists we would have never found otherwise.

8:37 No, they did not "draw over" her, but using motion capture technology, where her movements are recorded with a number of cameras, with the data fed to a computer system that turns it into a stick figure, and then her "skin", or the character model, is wrapped over it, all done in real time. This can be done simply with just one camera with a 2D character model, like the standard way vtubers stream, and mainly from home. But it can be a major production on a sound stage with more than twenty talents performing in 3D in a computer-generated stage. Hololive's parent company, Cover Corp, started as a tech company developing virtual reality and augmented reality systems, which explains a lot.
Hoshimachi Suisei, literally "Startown Comet" (that explains her star and comet motifs) is a most accomplished singers who just happened to be self-taught. In the video, the man on guitar is Taku Inoue, a very successful composer and producer who worked with Suisei on a few songs, and then they started a band called "Midnight Grand Orchestra", all worth a listen!
One big reason why I love VTubers is, that they can 100% focus on their content!
Too many, especially female streamer/musicians, do not get the attention they deserve because of their looks, which is a sad truth.
VTubers can disconnect themselves from that, heck, my favorites could sit next to be in the train and I wouldn't know. Their privacy is safe!
Similar to how Ado does it, we do not care what she looks like because her music slaps!
As others have said, I'm excited to see you guys reacting to Suisei, but this is also pretty much the Unplugged (TM) version of the song, arranged for The First Take. The guy on the guitar is the composer of the song, Inoue Taku (AKA Inotaku), and him and Suisei also have a music project together as a duo called Midnight Grand Orchestra.
But even if you guys don't do it on the channel, you should check out the clips of her singing and playing Tetris at the same time.
10:30 in Japan "Vtubers" have been around enough that just saying V evokes the entire umbrella of creators whether they're singers, illustrators, or other kinds of content creators. Whether or not their platform is social media, video sites, streaming sites, or subscription based memberships. Also, a lot of countries have their own region-based equivalents of all of those platforms, but the term "vtuber, virtual youtuber" was coined by Kizuna Ai around 2016 or so, and she was doing mocap stuff in a studio for short skit variety videos on RUclips before more accessible tech was available for the masses to do simple 2D model livestreams with. 11:30 Well said. 11:40 WELL. Btw, there are for sure vtuber reaction channels... I watch weekly anime with Japanese vtubers just because I can lmao.

First take version of Stellar Stellar is great but very vocal focused and simple. Considering their backgrounds I think Teji and Co might find the more produced songs have more for them to chew on and might be more interesting for them. Maybe Suisei's originals (like Ghost or Kakero?) or Houshou Marine (whose songs like Unison often play around with creative studio effects). Towa would also be a great choice to follow up with among others. Great vid and hope yall do more vtuber stuff in the future!! :D

The craziest thing about Suisei is the fact that she had throat surgery like a month or two right before performing this. Absolutely crazy.
I remember how scared she was, for some time she was afraid she might lose her voice, is so good that she came back even stronger, not for nothing she is the diamond in the making, what with all that pressure.
Just a tip but If you turn captions on most of the First Take videos have english captions so you can understand the lyrics
Also from what I saw online, she wore a motion capture suit and did it live. And they transposed her character over her in post. Since they're pretty serious about the live one take thing.
Since no one answered this question you guys had I will, yes it is MOCAP. I'm assuming that they had a space where they filmed the MOCAP footage of the microphone and then added the model. So technically the original singer is there we just can't see her. There are other Vtuber groups/artist (it is a very HUGE community) there is a Kpop group called PLAVE where they are all MOCAP "Vtubers" Kpop artists, but you guys don't react to Kpop so I'm not going to get into them right now lol.
There was a whole blog post from the Hololive producer that went into how they were able to perform this at First Take studio. It's on note? Either way, fun read.

I don't think The First Take made an exception here. She was there live during the performance. Just that there's an extra layer of motion capture. Suisei often makes music with a famous Japanese producer, TAKU INOUE (the pianist in the video). On the music side, Hololive is as big and real as it gets for VTubers. Another talent from the same company even signed with EMI Records and Universal Music in Japan.
I kinda wish you also reacted to the MV/original version. It's a completely different instrumentation. Another song from her I'd recommend is Ghost.
He was on the guitar, actually. This was live, in front of a real mic and, as you said, just with the extra mocap animated avatar layer. The tech to do this was Cover Corp.'s reason for starting Hololive to begin with: presenting live, animated performances on stage in front of an audience.
Curious side-note: the Sony headset asset the avatar is wearing was a gift to Suisei from SonyJP for this performance.
Not only was she there live, the Hololive crew were there too - the motion capture and character rendering was all done *live* in the first take studio.

Loved your entire discussion, but I think my favorite part was how you were all laughing and joking in the beginning (not like disrespectfully) and as soon as she started singing dead silence and game faces. Really appreciate the props and respect you guys gave this. The Hololive rabbit hole (let alone Vtuber) is vast and saturated with talent, but Suisei is definitely a giant among them. There are some vtubers who have really good voices. I mean, in some way its not new, remember Gorilaz? Vtubers tend to have a culture around them, especially in Japan but you don't need to know too much to just enjoy their music. I'd reccomend more of Suisei, but also there is Nerissa Ravencroft, Ironmouse, Calliope Mori, Irys, Hakos Baelz and Ayunda Risu. I could name another 10 at least tbh, there is just a lot of talent out there - which you could say with youtube in general

Yall should watch the actual music video of the song with all the instruments and the full production, just in your own time if not for a reaction. And turn on subtitles so you can understand the lyrics. The song is about her story of how she fought to climb out of obscurity to the top of the mountain where she is now.
Hololive has many, many super talented girls... but Suisei is the one who stands above them all.
You guys should do a reaction to one of their live 3D concert. it'll give more glimpse of what this techs could do. fun fact : Vtubers, especially Hololive (the group suisei belongs to), are freaking massive in japan. They are easily the most popular youtuber/streamer group in japan. at least 6 out of the top 10 most watched female streamer worldwide belonged to Hololive and that included top 1 for the last 3years.

As a VTuber fan I can say that there one for everyone’s need of a streamer in the VTuber part of the platforms….like do you want a shitposting memer? you want a fps beast? you want vocal beast? you want a high energy zoomer or low energy millennial? Pretty much anything you want in a irl streamer and there’s a VTuber that does it. If ya’ll want more music suggestions from VTuber I can suggest “Excuse my rudeness, but could you please R.I.P?” from Calliope Mori, Amane Kanata singing “Unravel” during her 3D concert, Ironmouse singing “When I look at you” in her Opera Voice and for my last one I’ll suggest Gawr Gura covering the Sabaton song called “Last Stand” she done that twice in unarchived karaoke streams so someone edited them together so it looks like she done a duet with herself (that one is a lil bit harder to find so if you want the best version I’ll post the link in a comment below).
I didn’t see this mentioned, so I will. She also wrote this song as well. So not even just a good singer, but also a great songwriter…and also cracked at Tetris.
If you decide to listen to more VTubers, there is a plethora of amazing music to choose from. From someone like Ironmouse who does incredible operatic music, to Mori Caliope who raps (and sings).
And yes, there are all of those types of VTubers you mentioned and more lol. I know of one that her content is mostly watching space rocket launches and landings.

The timing of you guys starting to get into the rabbit hole is almost perfect. because hololive just had a whole new year count down concert. probably too long for a video since it's a whole concert. But you could do it in parts or do the ones that are recommended most. Some advice though don't do the shuffle medley no matter how recommended it is. it's great only for people who are shoulders in the rabbit hole and can appreciate the references and what's going on if anything it might scare you off

one FIRST TAKE i really recommend is Gero. He's been around for a veeery long time and his take is really wild, fun, his vocals are powerful, and lemme tell you, probably the first to actually eat while live singing 😂 really immerses into it

The company that manages Hololive, the talent agency of which Suisei is a member, actually put out an article a while back detailing some of the work that went into this specific production. They worked with the staff behind The First Take to almost completely renovate the normal set used for the show to allow for full motion capture. So, what you see there is actually her on the actual regular set of The First Take where she would be in a motion capture suit and, in post-production, the Hololive technical staff would then super-impose her 3D model over her. They use this same sort of technology to put on really big live 3D shows in which Suisei and other Hololive members will do full concerts in a live venue with a small sound stage setup just off stage so that the talents can freely interact with the crowd (and the paid livestream viewers) as if they were really standing on the stage.
The concept and technology has made for some incredible performances, including the annual HoloFes concert event, a multi-day concert event featuring nearly all of the 63 Hololive members (which doesn't include the 23 male members of Holostars, which they have their own concert events) across multiple 3 hour concerts. The next HoloFes is coming up in March and I highly recommend checking it out, as it is always a great time (if you do the paid livestream option, you can watch the VODs for up to a month afterward if you're not up for being awake at 1am to watch a concert happening at noon Japan time, lol).

Nice reaction. Suisei is a pretty incredible talent. Her music is all pretty great.
People do tend to associate vtubers with streaming these days, but they are indeed not just streamers. When vtubers first became a thing (which you might be surprised to know was like seven years ago now) in fact they mostly just did short vlog type videos. There are in fact vtuber reaction channels and just about everything else. That said, Suisei is a streamer (on RUclips) and doesn’t just do music. Her gaming skill is sometimes actually even more impressive than her voice.
And she is just one of many in her agency, Hololive. There are a bunch of companies producing vtubers, but Hololive is pretty special not just as one of the biggest (and by some standards the biggest), but because all their talents do music at least to some extent in addition to streams. Some more than others, of course, but they’ve all released songs and most of them are pretty crazy talented. Hololive is also probably the most globally popular Vtuber group. Most of the talents are Japanese like Suisei, but Hololive also has many Indonesian talents as a part of their Hololive ID branch and English speaking talents under the Hololive EN branch.

Alright let me explain. VTubers are played by a real person, not AI etc. For this First Take, the person behind the character Suisei, is actually in the studio singing her heart out, wearing a mocap suit with facial mocap etc. So yes, the headphones and mics are real.

I would love to see you guys react to Yuuri and his song Shutter. It's on The First Take and really steals your attention. Yuuri is one of the biggest artists in Japan to my knowledge, to the point that most know his songs even if they don't know him. He has also been a frequent street performer until recently and is one of those artists that draws you in with his amazing voice and expressive body motions and facial expressions. Being the first vtuber to appear on The First Take, Suisei thought her audience would be confused or resent her appearance and asked if she should do warm-ups or introduce herself. Her manager told her to not worry about introductions and just shut everyone up with her singing. Judging by everyone's reaction, that seemed to do the trick.
