Restraining Order Suspect Leads LAPD Cops on Foot Chase Before Taser Takes Him Down

Los Angeles, California - On March 24, 2024, around 11:05 a.m., 77th Street Division officers responded to a radio call of a Domestic Violence Restraining Order Violation in the 1700 block of West 59th Street. As the officers arrived, they saw the suspect, later identified as Brian Garay, in front of the residence. Garay immediately ran from the officers who pursued him on foot. A TASER was used, and probes struck Garay in the chest and stomach.
Garay fell to the ground and was taken into custody.Los Angeles Fire Department personnel responded and transported Garay to a local hospital. During the transportation, Garay began to show signs of medical distress. Garay was admitted to the hospital in critical condition, but since admittance has been updated to stable condition. No officers or community members were injured during the incident.

You're right, tasers are notoriously finicky and random. Sometimes the suspect is incapacitated even through multiple layers of clothes. Other times they're shirtless and the probes still don't make good contact. The effective distance is all over the place too. Sometimes the perp is 5 feet away and it doesn't work, other times they're 15+ feet away and the officer nails them. It obviously can be an effective tool when it works, but a lot of times it gets the officer into more trouble than if they didn't have that.

@@DetectiveTrupo203 especially with the older versions with only two probes. You have to get good contact with the skin with both probes in order for it to work. The newer models have four, and any two making contact will work. They're supposedly much more reliable
Apparently one major thing is that the higher dart needs to be on the top part of the body, the lower one attached to the lower body and if that doesn't happen it doesn't work reliably. Something to do with how nerves work. Weird.

We jad a member in our squad that was 13yrs old. While patrolling he ended up catching a few rounds. After everything was done someone had noticed that he was shot three times and he had no clue pretty much from the adrenaline. Him, his younger brother and his mom were killed by rivals about 4 months later

On another occasion, at a scout camp in central Texas in the summer, the Explorer scouts had the benefit of pitching their tents on wooden platforms that had electricity. That was a new Taser 10, which allows the user to fire as many as 10 probes in a row, one at a time. Higher voltage and longer range, too. Notice that the cop actually got 3 or 4 probes in him. Pretty sick.
