It is an audio tour. The headphones are telling people where to walk, what to look at and telling stories about the cell block. Different recordings will take you on a different route.

Becky's Balcony was closed as it was too rotted out from sea water on the concrete to be secure. It would had to been rebuilt inside and rebuild to the standard of the day. Today it wouldn’t fly as the electric and water needs. It generated its own power and still does, very expensive. The 2 miles of wire it would need to run would be really expensive plus you need a sewage system and water. They shipped in drinking water and flushed with sea water that’s not adequate for EPA standard. The waste and water today would likely need updating. It’s all prohibitively expensive.

The old power building wouldn’t fly and today it’s powered by solar and diesel backup generator but that’s merely enough for lights, and gift shop not enough to run kitchen and laundry and such.

When it was a prison they released raw sewage into the bay, today the bathroom there has a holding tank they pump (like a big porta potty) they pump that and ship it back and wouldn’t be enough for 30 min of prison use with hundreds people. No room for septic system for a facility that size.

Here’s an interesting part of information not on the travel brochure Lol: Alcatraz Cruises, the company that brings tourists to the island, has a service agreement to bring fresh water, fuel and supplies to the island and dispose of trash and wastewater. Using a specially equipped Mechanized Landing Craft (LCM 8), Alcatraz Cruises pumps sewage and wastewater from the on-island storage tank to a built-in container on the LCM 8. The LCM 8 is also used to carry water, fuel and supplies from the mainland to Alcatraz.

@@Phantom-darkness According to satellite pictures, there are solar panels all over the roof of the cell house.
