I’m currently going to school for my welding certificate, and I have found that your videos are by far one of the most helpful things on learning how to get high quality welds! Thank you!!
I've been a welder since 1972. I began as a helper and practiced during breaks and lunch. Got my 1st opportunity to make two 3g uphill welds because the welder couldn't fit through the porthole. My welds were UT'd as passing. I'm currently certified AWS D1.1/5.20 Unlimited thickness positions; flat, horizontal, vertical, overhead. As a boiler maker welding heat exchangers, I was ASME certified 30 years ago.
I've been welding for 20 years l learn something new every day and I got a long way to go. I think I can get better. I thought I was a pretty good welder to be self-taught then watch guy's like you. I've got to work harder to get better. I will never think that l've got to the point that can't get better. Thanks all the welders on RUclips!
practicing overhead in school, this is a great video. I have been using your channel to learn along the way and it has helped me immensely! Thanks for providing such good quality education for free, I am very grateful for this channel.
I LOVE YOUR TIG FINGER!!!!!!!!! My aluminum weldment got so hot yesterday..... I reached over and got out the TIG FINGER you sell and wrapped the aluminum tubing with it and finished the weld without burning my torch hand.
Watched another of your videos years back with the "hot enough to hold tight arc; then hold a tight arc", had trouble with a welding school test.. needed your advice, ended up running ~135amps, ran it tight, bead layed in there perfectly. Got enough arc force to really flatten the bead. Your advice is legit Jody.
This guy Jody is a living legend, Jody thank you for everything that you did for us, your videos helped me become welder. You are the absolute master of welding. In Europe we do not have legends like you
Something that my instructor showed me was when I'm running my bead I have the rod pushed up to where I can feel the hard rod dragging on the plate. If my travel speed is too slow, I am depositing too much metal in one area which results in it dripping down too. So even if you are welding a little cold and have a correct feed rate , it should be ok. Definitely a tight ark is key. Great video. I'm learning every day!
Love your videos so much Jodi! I'm a beginning welder just about to do my AWS cert. your videos have helped me immensely. Your energy and ability to explain what's going on is really unique.
i attended welding school back in Chicago when I was 18 or 19 for about six months. I passed my vertical up and my overhead on the first try (8013 Root and 7018 hot and covers) but it seems back then that I just went through the motions on auto pilot... I actually have learned MORE here with Jody doing Stick & Tig welding than I ever did then. Most of our training went to Oxy-acetylene Radiograph cutting and stick welding. The Heliarc machine for Tig only went to the students that paid the extra fee out of their pockets which wasn't covered by the student loan ($2,200 extra) Boy... we could hardly afford our $3.00 lunches back then so Tig was out of our league. It was done with pure helium with those Arco welders (2 tons welders!) and all I got was a crappy job at a metal furniture factory where the only process was done with Mig for $5.00 an hour! So I had to learn on the job and on the go and never got to work with Stick welding again for years, Crap! I wasted all that money on school and didn't pursued welding until I was over 50 and your channel is about the best school I ever attended. Now I have my own welding business and if it wasn't for Jody, I would still be working for some factory Korean slaver bleeding me out! Thanks for all your Love of the trade Master Jody. I love doing Tig and Mig but for some enamored reason, Stick is and will always be my first Love!
That little 1/4" movement right as you're finishing the bead is something I haven't been doing. Seems it leaves a much nicer finish. Gonna have to try that. Also, I find it fascinating how someone who's been doing this probably longer than I've been on this Earth says "I need some practice" .. I feel that's a huge point to take away from this video. Great stuff 🙌🏻

I have just started trying to learn to stick weld and your video's have helped immensely. Thank you very much for taking the time and effort to put together a set shows which are entertaining and informative.
Thinking what folks may not have noticed was how you spent the time on the top plate,if I spend most of my time on the top plate it eliminates undercut and is actually easier than flat, looks better too!

Do you think maybe 6011 root and then 7018 cover? Any suggests on amperage? It's some vertical and overhead. Thanks for all your great vids!
Hey Jody, thanks for the video. Quick question though, as your quite the experienced welder (with many certification tests done), when taking a certification shouldn't the tester provide cooked rod whether it's new or old?
7018 electrodes are a low hydrogen rod and in a test situation, or actual code work, the rods would either be fresh out of the oven, portable rod oven, or used within a certain time after being in a rod oven or freshly opened.
Thanks for another excellent video, Jody. Change of subject.......I got that book you've recommended from the Lincoln Foundation; METALS AND HOW TO WELD THEM. Fantastic book. Thanks for that tip. I think it is worth mentioning Lincoln electric has a couple different 7018 rods commonly available the classic LH-70 and excaliber. The excaliber has a thinner flux and works a bit easier for out of position welding because it runs better at lower amps and less flux makes less slag not to mention it fits into the joint better helping to control arc length and travel angle. Some companies 7018 rod really have fat flux making them great for flat but a bit more difficult out of position. For youngster remember to control bead size on every bead. If your bottom bead is the biggest bead you can carry you are setting up to fail. When you run stringer over stringer the second bead will have to be slightly larger than the first and the third slightly larger than the second and so on. When the beads get to large and start to sag it makes holding the tight arc hard. I hope this helps someone. Great video Jody thanks for sharing and helping.
