I've welded for years and always did things the same way. It's great to see another welders perspective. I pick up a lot tricks watching your videos. Your videos are good for all welders and a God send to the new welders. A lot of us older guys had to figure it out ourselves and we picked up a lot of bad habits and misconceptions along the way. Keep up the good work. I hope you get a lot of followers and make LOTS of video $$$$. Ps My friend always wanted to learn to weld. I'm now retired and live in a condo so I set up his garage with all my welding equipment. My new fav. pastime is now teaching my buddy and doing a few small projects. All we need now is a beer fridge.
In all my years , I have never seen a person use a torch like you, little or no slag and straight as an arrow , and your welding skills are awesome , a true professional , great videos , keep them coming , Frank T
...I never got past how clean and dead nuts straight the cutting was... I've seen less smother cuts from a band saw. And free hand?!?! Such a small exact flame. _Just_ what was needed.
"Hesitate at on top then come down to the bottom" I have seen other videos on overhead and saw them do it but it's nice when you actually explain it. Thanks for taking the time for the videos.
God works in crazy ways. Went from a corporate desk job suddenly falling into a MIG welding gig. My welding sucks so here I am watching your channel. Thanks for the tips sir.
There is so much to learn from this man about welding and general working skills its not even funny,...........Thank You,Sir..........................Fort Worth,Tx
It's really nice to see someone who is experienced and is actually out in the field showing realistic, hands-on tips and demonstration on how to weld. I've only got a couple hours under my belt at home, and this really helps to listen and watch. I'm not trying to make perfection since I'm not working as a welder, but I am just interested in doing the best I can with what I've got. Thanks again!
I wish I could cut like that. You need to do a video on just making a perfect cut like you do. How you set up your oxygen and acetylene amounts, pre-heating, starting and stopping mid-cut, etc. Awesome skill you have.
Thumbs up man…I roll like you. I’m full timer in a heavy , hard and nasty high volume sanitation company. I make good use of 6010 and usually always pre 7018 .👍
I'm glad you make your video cuz I just now starting to weld self-learning lol and I'm glad that you make videos cuz it helped me a lot on learning how
Just looking at This video I realise that I don’t know nothing about real welding. But what is important is that I’m willing to learn. This is a true craftsman at work.
Great tips, great video. I'm a new welder. Just now welding my first red iron shop and had to do a lot of horizontal and vertical welding. I burned the hard way and figure out almost every tip u shared after burning the hell outta myself! Slag down shirt, in ear, EVERYWHERE. DEF BUTTON all the way up! Hat over ear is great. Your position means everything!
Nice tips! I don't have 6010 rods for a root pass but I find if you pre heat to 150° 7018 will lay like magnetic butter! Also is you want the bottom weld to look like the top.. just mess the top up also so it looks consistent
Hi Chris! Good to see you, my friend. I understand exactly what you’re accomplishing by running the 6010 root. Me personally, I’ve never done that and, like you, I’ve never heard of having to grind the mill scale off. Heck, I can’t even tell you how many times that I’ve been questioned about why I’m waisting time grinding the paint off! Me, I always put my root in with 7018 if that’s what the detail calls for but I also manipulate the puddle with a sort of weave and back step pattern that I didn’t even realize I was doing until I was trying to show someone else how to run overhead one day. Bottom line, there’s more than one way to skin a cat and as long as you’re comfortable with it and you’re passing inspection, it’s not wrong. Be blessed.
I always wanted my bottom welds to look as good as my top. So I started making the top look crappy too! Haha Sure you have heard that one but I had to say it! Great advice as always.
Hey bud can you do a video on 6g downhill , like 6 inch schedule 80 preferably. That’s what I’m working on in school I’m advancing with pipe I got a job lined up for air and gas welding . If u could break down the lower quarter of the pipe and how u position ur body for it , especially, that would be awesome, thanks. Really getting a lot out of your channel .
Pretty cool, In welding lab we'd just get a good fit up and weld. Passed 3/8 open root bend tests without grinding the mill scale. Liked the info on using 6010 on the fillet overhead.
I wish you were my instructor at my school. Almost one year since I quit that shit show. 51 when I started school, made the deans list. Yay. I learned so much on youtube and brought that knowledge to school, went for SMAW ,skipped GMAW and had a lot of fun with GTAW. They didn't teach overhead SMAW,dorks, did it myself.
When I first bought a set of rods I wanted some 1mm rods (theyre like matchsticks) and the shop didnt want to sell me them, he decided I would have so much trouble with them I wouldnt use them......... I really like using them to be honest Something I picked up fast, because I learnt by welding up car chassis' was that you have to run atleast two beads,Do one and clean it ... the first one burns all the junk off then run the second one and that one will come out nice and neat because I already got rid of everything the grinder wouldnt touch with heat..I also learnt not to be under that stuff cause things fall off and set your butt on fire...I'm a blacksmith so being on fire doesnt panic me but being under a car with a hot bead down my back..not funny These videos are great btw really enjoying following and learning
hey Chris.....when I went to the a D1:1 f4 test on 1/2" plate, [2001] they would not allow me to run a 6010 1st bead, telling me I would always have to run a 6010 1st bead....so I just went with 7018.....I pretty much run a 6010 bead on any structural that I can get away with, cause grindin' and wire brushin' paint ain't my thing...... great video here my friend.....Old man Paul in Florida
Excellent video and just what I was needing! I've struggled with 7018 overhead in the past, but the tips you provided are perfect! Subscribed & keep them coming. Thanks!
Hey man how's it going, so watch your videos alot to learn all some of the different ways of welding an approaching problems, an I was wondering if theres any way for me to still get my hands on one of those 400amp stubby stingers
I am amazed! I didn't know you could cut so clean with a torch. I thought you had to use a plasma cutter to cut so clean. Blown away. How thick of steel can you cut with a torch?
@@TaylorWelding for just getting my feet wet in welding and fab I thought I needed a plasma cutter but I can see clearly that a torch and grinder can get me started way cheaper. Trying to do more with less, the first welder I could get my hands on was a 225 Lincoln ac/dc so I'm outfitting it with a 50ft power chord and 25ft leads, 300 amp stinger and ground clamp. It's not fancy but nothing is going to make me better faster than getting started and doing the things.
Always love your content Chris. An old dumbass crane operator learning "tons" watching your vids. Thank you so much about the White Out tip, Saw that in an earlyer vid you posted and tried it. Ill never use chalk again.
I thought I was a good welder coming out of the local welding trade school....then I joined the Ironworkers Union. I found out I wasn't as good as I thought. That was until I had to 3g and 4g in a tiny cramped spot hanging upside down by my pecker. I think I'm decent now. Never forget, there's always more to learn and even tiny, tiny tips, tricks, or adjustments can make you a better welder. Never think you know everything.
Outstanding Content my Friend. I've been Mig and Tig welding the past 4 years and just bought a motor driven lincoln. Trying to learn stick and I spend more time filling holes that I blow out (Sucks) but occasionally I lay one down that meets with my rather high standards. Recently I was rebuilding an old smoker 3/16 sheet steel and try as I might I just couldn't do the overhead stuff, had to get the mig out to get it done for thanksgiving. I don't do much with stuff thicker than 1/8 and 3/16 but plan to do some pipe fence and a metal building on my property. Any tips on the thin stuff? Keep up the great videos. Thanks Bud!
awesome video :) could you please do a 7018 verticle up. I can do verticle down, i the rod in and it looks nice. but my up falls apart and looks like crap! I love your vids and awesome tricks thank you for sharing
Get down low. You're funny. I work in hydropower. That is to say: you go where it is. Generally in the wet, stretched, leaning, on the nastiest metal on earth. Thanks for all the other tips though! Excellent cuts and welds there.
Hay chris I liked the way you cut the metal free hand I can not do that but I ran my gas on 3 and 30 I don't think that helped O won't to tell you I love the rod saver hop you got your money Thanks jack

High-pressure pipe is usually stick welded in the field. That’s been the majority of my career, but most of the prefab stuff is mig welded
The first pass 6010 is really nice for j bevels. 7018 hates those
