I really enjoyed your CLAMS acronym. I am a teacher and have always used DASH as mine (Distance Angle Speed Heat). I love that you added that into your video because it is a great tool for people especially if they are learning to weld.
hey Jody another great video. When i started welding, one of the difficulties was when watching an advancing arc puddle and understanding how the bead was being formed through the chaos. It took a while for me to distinguish what great deposition looked like, and felt like for that matter. I like how you allow ample viewing time for the student to study and learn "the care and feeding" of the all important puddle, and propper bead formation. Great stuff.
Got my 7018 3g down about to take the test soon for my ironworker union then start 4g stick not gonna like you’re videos made me able to weld a lot better appreciate your free knowledge you provide not a lot of old timers that take their time to teach
I was at the orientation today just for this field of work. This program in New Jersey is free and boy do I need it. I love art of welding. It truly is a skill that I know I would be great at. Only problem is 105 people showed up and they are only taking 15! No surprise there. The knowledge I have gained from watching videos like yours on youtube is priceless. If I don't make the cut and that is a probability. I will keep learning from your channel and others. Thank you so much for this.
I really like this one, he does an excellent job with the 7018 between the various passes. Makes the overhead and vertical up look identical to each other, very well done.
You truly are a talented educator Jody but you've got plenty of folk telling you that. But good on ya I've learnt loads. I'm no professional welder but get by when I need to. The other day I had to site weld ( stick) 2.5mm wall rails to 3.5mm posts. That gave me overheads on the lower rail at 400mm off the ground. It was the same weld as the top rail but lying on my side made all the difference and really upped the degree of difficulty. Would love to see a vid on difficult out of position in stupid places stick welding. Thanks for all your great work
I DIG your VIDEO'S, ADMIRE your TALENT & PASSION towards WELDING - AS a BOILERMAKER, I have come to rely on your techniques, MUCH APPRECIATED! I WOULD LOVE TO SEE SOME MORE 'TUBE' WELDING VIDEOS, ESPECIALLY ON SMALLER DIAMETER PIPE; 6G TUBE WELDING IS OUR MOST COMMONLY USED INDUSTRY TEST. THANKS a MILLION "WELD-MONGER" - YOUR FRIEND GEORGE aka 'G3' - PITTSBURGH BOILERMAKERS
weldingtipsandtricks which is better to be a welder,\ pipefitter the ua unions , shipyard s or oil field, which field would you recommend for a young welder and which training would you prefer, welding school, ua union or shipyard.
Wow cutting that tube with a plasma Arc.. in the shop..?? IDK maybe it's just me but you know us guys need these RUclips videos to explain everything.. my number one choice would have been a bandsaw??
Noticed the fine movements to the sides and up/down always shifting the arc around ever so slightly ensuring penetration is maintained. The difficultly I have is making large blobs of molten metal fall only on vertical and upside down. I will try it next time thanks for the insight.
Hi Jody, love watching your videos, im a fitter welder working in Mt Isa Mines Queensland Australia, alot of the time we are using a gen/welder Wire feeder and flux cored for our structual work. Would it be possible for you to do a video on how to set it up properly, say using a LN wire feeder and power source. Cheers, hope to hear from you soon
Well, get out there and do some! Don't waste your time and Jodie's. If I was in Jodie's position I would want everyone watching my vids to make something of it. Inspired action anyone? I went out and started practicing welding at work after hours (not a fabricator by trade)
Hey Jody, any chance you could explain or show that transition/overlap halfway up the pipe/tube on pass 2 and 3. I'm a learner and have a hard time figuring out the smoothest way to transition with proper rod angles and make the weld look good for the next passes. Anyways love your videos, they help me a lot when I'm struggling to get a good weld. /Jonathan
Hi Jody, I was taught before inverter welding was about and relay have no idea what im doing with this new fandangle. I have a job welding cast iron to steel and my welder is set to 95 ampere, while welding any at any higher amps the puddle spatters and i have no control with 3.6mm E7018's, even at 90 amp there is bugger all penetration. so i figure the sweet spot is 95 amp. Then i watched this video and lo and behold your set at 120 amp, this is a very wide range separation in comparison in my mind. Am i in the park?
Great videos! I've most often used a lighter 10' whip line connected to the main heavy cable with a Bernard twist lock electrode holder for a more solid and manipulative way of bending the rod for challenging positions and much more comfort than trying to hold up a heavy cable over my shoulder. Yes a little slower in changing rods, but once you get used to it it's fast. Like to know your thoughts and opinion since I have never heard you talk about it or seen you use one in your videos. I see you are wearing ear protection, which I also believe it would be good to mention using any time your welding, burning or air arcing, especially overhead. Thank you, Ed K. Cleve. Oh.
At the shop I'm at in job corps I have a lincoln electric precision tig 275 and it a bit finicky. Some thing in the tig area is broken and the center wont fix or replace it. And it burns really hot, even at a low setting. For some reason, it has a constant voltage of 68.2 and it cant be adjusted.
weldingtipsandtricks I'm new to welding and I'm actually going to school this fall for it. I'm thinking of buying a Chicago electric 225 stick welder to have on hand and practice when I'm not in school. What Is a good electrode to run on this welder. It's ac only.. thanks for the videos, they are are lot of help
Love you guy! You are using the machine I bought and I'm having trouble on how to set it right. I will pay you 10 mil to show me how to set the damn thing properly. Problem is. I don't have 10 mil to squander like that. Oh well, I will just keep watching your videos.
Jody, I haven't started welding yet (not enough $). I've learned much from your videos. I also learned the 1 am per 1/1000th inch rule from you. This sample tubing is unexpectedly set to 125 amps when the steel is around 3/4 inch thick. Why does the thickness of this steel go beyond the need of the general rule? Is it because of the depth of penetration is expected to be around 125/1000inch? Does this rule breakdown for some other reason? Thank you for your videos!
I’m building a 6x2” 1/4” thick base square tubing base for an outboard engine stand. I did bevel it and two passes of 7018 did the job. Would a flush fit work with a single pass at that thickness? I was thinking with 6010 as it would dig deeper than 7018.
Jamie, on your overhead, 2nd pass, why did you put your first multi pass on top of the weld instead of the bottom. Dont you always want to stack up when doing a multi pass overhead weld?
Jody, Great video. My question is; What is your trick for seeing the puddle in the verticle up position? I can really see and monitor my puddle in the 1 , 2 , and 4 positions and my beads are really nice. I have trouble picking out the puddle for verticle up. I end up with inconsistancy in my beads as I start relying on what I see happening in the front of the rod coupled with regulating my percieved travel speed. Thanks and keep the knowledge coming.
John T I guess the trick is just line of sight. gotta be able to see the leading edge of the puddle, where you are going, as well as the entire puddle. So gotta position your head in such a way to see all of that if possible. I also think some very slight manipulation of the electrode like making very small circles or upside down V can give you an increment of travel that helps.
Love your videos. Do you use any special filter lens when video recording? I recently did a flux core video with NR232 .068 and amps around 300. Couldn't see the puddle thru all the smoke, bright orange and static interference. Any tips?
is downhill a valid tehnique with 7018 on a thinner steel, 1/8" or 3/16" maybe even 1/4" if theres a gap to fill? is the slag running quicker than the puddle an issue or will it float to the surface as you keep moving forward
Could you make a Video of a 3g vertical up pipe test with 7018? Im having a real struggle with building strings from 6 o'clock to 4 and 8 I'd appreciate it alot! :)
I’ve been running a 7018 @ 120 Amps Vertical, but I keep creating big bulgy beads. I feel comfortable and my hand is steady, but my beads come out terrible on vertical.
Try weaving instead of going straight. I honestly dont know how anyone runs beads straight up in vertical, I'm terrible at it. Always something to improve on.
I love my LaSquare that I bought from your store years ago! I find it to be one of my most valuable tools that I own.
I suspect these videos are more appreciated than you realize. Thanks for doing all of these.
I really enjoyed your CLAMS acronym. I am a teacher and have always used DASH as mine (Distance Angle Speed Heat). I love that you added that into your video because it is a great tool for people especially if they are learning to weld.

Beautiful job Jody. You are the man. Thank you.
The closeups really help me understand the technique involved. Great vid, thx
Weldingtipsandtricks my favorite channel!! ;)
i like how you switched directions to prevent arc blow

hi jody im a pipe welder from south africa love your vids😀
I switched from 6011 to 7018 with my everlast welder and whoa was welding different. Just shows that practicing is so important.
Just started my journey at TWS, these videos are very helpful, thank you!
Good video Jody. This type of welding is sometimes in and around the machine shop also. Thanks for sharing your tips and tricks.
Adam
Abom79 Thanks for the post Adam. I see both you and Keith Fenner breaking out the stick welder all the time.
I love stick welding man. For a lot of what I do building these hydraulics, it's my go to method.

That is an impressive welding machine. Good video
Awesome! I need to do some overhead and am out of practice. I have been doing TIG only for a while and needed a reminder. Thanks!
That’s why I am here I haven’t done over head in a while so I came here for a quick recap before I weld overhead tommorow
Thanks Jody. As always I learn a lot.

Good video Jodi, you have very educational videos.
Your videos are great, you have helped me do a better job with all types of welding.
thanks for the videos and all your hard work.
Perfect timing for me. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you sir very helpful Have a great day Tim
Thanks Jody awesome video as always
Ironworkers may not be the only ones who do structural welding but were the best at it
William Lucero You might be right...its my policy to not argue with an ironworker.
Very nice job👍👍👍👍👍
you are an artist
Thank you for the great video Jody
Another good video, Thanks Jodie
Sir,
Well done. Great tips.
I am very grateful for your videos, thank you.
thanks for all your help
Smooth arc. And i Love it

Damn I thought you were Kurt Russell for a moment! Great Vid!
Great video
great video, thank you. you're an awesome welder.
To get more use of your material, weld on the inside of the tube also. Plus some good practice in hard to reach and see situations.
Very good video
Hey Jody I'm a newbie welder just starting out stick welding with my everlast welder. I'm totally in awe on your welding skills.
Honestly, we all are.
Just wait till you try and TIG stainless. I'm this close 👉👈 to selling all my equipment and solar flux
Thanks for the video.
Well done.
Pretty good my bro that's right
Im learning a lot with those tips
Very, very good info right here. You made it look easy, I guess when done right it is lol.
Your videos are great. Man can learn a lot watching you. Bravo
Great video very informative.

DH I'm in Welding school as we speak :). so heck. I watch this channel alot.... I need all the training I can get...
I would love one of those wide base squares. It's just the postage and handling to Australia that kills it for me. Great videos though!
Good job!!!

Good info as always. 3g with 7018 has to be the hardest IMHO. I can't seem to ever get a nice looking bead always really ropey and crowned .
Probably need to tighten up your arc length.
+Bill De La Vega sounds like you're running too cold and/or too fast. those upside down V's Jody mentioned are my favorite method for a solid 3G/3F
good job
It would be rad if you could give us some tips on down hill pipe E6010 R+H 7011F+C
can you make a video on 7018 open root overhead
Lol. Noooo
Hey Jody can you do a video on welding repair of rusty metal?
Thanks great videos
Would like to know more about that square, I couldn't find it on weldmonger.
Thanks and keep up the videos.

Is there a video of vertical padding? Line after line vertically on a 6×6" plate...I'm doing it in class and I'm getting sloppy beads with drip.
Maybe try to tighten up your arc?
So in your opinion should you do the second pass in over head on the bottom first or on the top first?
Bien explicado, excelente información.
Cool vids
Hasselhoff is welding! =D
+Vitaliy Yavorskiy ha ha! I never thought of that!
Hi let me tell you are muy bueno welder. Good explenation y gracias
Please.....talk about arc force on settings. Im using a ESAB REBEL 215
I'd like to hear your tips for 7018 overhead.
Thanks for the metric reference!

Im having a real struggle with building strings from 6 o'clock to 4 and 8
I'd appreciate it alot! :)
Can you do more on vertical it's because that's what I really struggle with angle of rod vertical 7018 and 6010 vertical
maybe not the angle maybe to hot so it melts?
From the video look like 7018 run good by jamming the rod in 90 degree no push or pull

The 2nd pass on vertical should the temp be turned down for less drip and build up ?
thank you
