Great video!! All anybody noticed in the comments was Andrew's hood.... nobody noticed how perfect his weld looks while not using a prop for his welding arm! Free arming 5/32 uphill and knocking it outta the park!! You're my hero, Andrew!
I'm a chef of 2 decades. I'm 39, & just got into shipfitting. I can't express my gratitude enough. My vertical 7018's were garbage. They are getting better. Thank you so much for these instructional videos.
Not too many years ago I learned more from this mans FREE online videos than I did from my welding instructor in college. Which later landed me a job that pays for my house and a new car to this very day. Support this guy.
If you're doing a plate test, taking the time to let the plate cool between passes can really be beneficial in preventing undercut and sag. Great video as always, just wanted to add my 2 cents.
Sign of a welder worth his money though is one that approaches the test like they would a weld on a job site, and on a job site where time is money...you can't cool your parts down and constantly be changing your amperage. Want to be a welder that's worth his money...learn to make amazing welds quickly and without constantly changing your amperage. This can be achieved by learning different techniques of rod manipulation for different situations
Man I've been watching your videos since I was a first year apprentice when I started ironwork in 2017.as good as the training was in the apprenticeship I'm positive you are the reason I've become as competent as I have at welding. I don't want to say I'm the best welder, not by a Longshot but using your techniques have helped me become a solid welder whenever I weld.
Lol. You run 5/32 7018 the same way I did on ships. That technique is the best to let the puddle cool down enough to not drip down lol. Great video man. You are a great teacher.
These videos are so helpful. To help my (mainly) hobby welding, I took a beginner's class at the local tech college 25 years ago and was taught a "whip" manipulation for this kind of weld, with 1/8" 7018 (I also have a textbook which recommends a similar method). I had a tough time getting that right and never did perfect the method, partly because I can usually set the position of the work to avoid difficult positions, which has the negative side-effect of eliminating practice time! It is SO good to see not only a completely different method for doing vertical-up fillet welds, but also a functional explanation of why that particular weave works well. This looks easier to "get right" than the method I've always used in the past, and I'm making a note to try this myself.
I thought the same went to votec ,a year and a half , just getting ready to start on tig, but went out , went a long time making it without tig, but come to find out I didn't realize how important and in demand it is in , so I had to pick it up , wish I'd stayed a little longer in votec and got on some tig, instead of almost 10 years later , most pipe is done now with a tig bead and stick the rest of the way out , and alloys are always mainly done with tig, I know guys that straight tig in the field and can barely weld with anything else making good $$$ , I've relized I best get with the program and get on that tig
hi jody hello adrian greetings from colombia, all welding classes have helped me a lot, help us clarify doubts or any concerns you have, thank you very much for your lessons.
Always learning something about the process. I never knew this type of angle and uphill was even possible. When starting out you learn that the angle behind in a pull helps push the slag however it's clearly not necessary with rod type and technique.
You’re going faster than that? He’s already going pretty quick for a weave pattern. Unless you’re burning pretty hot like he was up around 140 then you’re probably getting like no penetration.
@@dazdavis7896 I was using 1/8 but i believe i was just running too hot. Think ive bumped it down to 110-115 for uphill. I think my problem was too hot which was causing the metal to drop and bulge up in places and i was moving faster to compensate as opposed to dropping the amps. Think i was at 125 initially but that was 1/8 7018.
@@DXT61 I was just about to ask if you were runnin a 5/32 7018 instead of a 1/8 that woulda made more sense them telling you run it that low…. My Gpa, who got me into welding before I went to school, welded on the railroad for 35 years. Heavy duty 6010, 6011, 6013, 7018 welding on the train cars and what not, he always told me it’s better to burn too hot than too cold.
I am gojng to try some of these techniques tonight I am learning level 2 stick welding and need to do a fillet uphill, my tutor said to do a Christmas tree weave pattern I will ask him if I can do the Z pattern and upside down V instead plenty of things to try just from this video alone
This video is so awesome its so good on welding thats why welding is so nice to be a job more challenges on different position stick welding is one of the hardest on types of welding
If anyone here at this channel reads this: 1. Thank you for your excellent tips. 2. What camera/ lens/ equipment are you folks using to get such excellent visuals of your welds?
Interesting video and demonstration. Always learn something watching your channel. Thanks for sharing. PS Jim Bollinger from DoRight Fabrication gave you a great shout out at the Summer Bash. He said that yours is about the only welding channel on RUclips that is spot on all the time. Kudos...
That much heat and metal on a coupon that small is impressive! 5/32” is no joke to run vertical on big pieces, it’s super tricky on a small piece that saturates quickly with heat!
I realize this may be a specific video request...but can you do one for 8” 13# I-beam welded at 90 degrees to each other and at head hieght? Maybe some tips or tricks for coping one to meet the other would be nice too. I’m still trying to finish a frame to go under a shipping container and I need to weld it together in place since I don’t have any equipment strong enough to lift it where it needs to go.
My hardest issue welding is just finding the right rod for the metal i am welding. I am self taught so sometimes i have to experiment to find the right rod. One of the hardest but most successful welds i ever made was a case hardened steel collar welded to a cast flange on a gas compressor. It ran for years with 150 psi and the vibration of a two stage compressor. Never ever leaked not to bad for self taught in the field. But wish i had more knowledge of the different grades of steel and aluminum it would make choosing rods easier.
Andrew pushes the weld up at an upward angle. It works and he does a nice job but that seems to spit more BBs than Jodie's "closer to level" approach. It's good to see that there is some forgiveness in rod angle. I think when younger welders first start, they think that they have to help the weld by pushing it uphill. It become a habit that they sometimes never break.
I have 45lb of Lincoln 5/32 7018 in my truck that I almost never run because of I'm scared of blowing holes and such.. This man is hitting a vert on 3/8 steel and he's just erased all my fears. Gonna show off in the near future lol, I like to be able to get a lot more weld in 1 rod too..
With 7018 if you don't use the whole rod, taking a file to the end of the rod will help you get started again, ( the flux tends to cover the tip making a restrike harder).
When you run stringers you can get a flatter bead stack by watching where the arc light shines off the ridge top of the previous bead and washing your metal up to but not past that line.

Jody can you please make a video testing arc force and hot start features on the esab rebel 205 ac/dc. I see the 285 can handle the 5/32 rods. Debating whether to buy 205 but kind of skeptical if it can run a 5/32 6010...once again thank you for sharing your fountain of knowledge!
I recently just bought an esab rebel 285ic, what are your impressions about it's weld quality and how it compares to the other machines you've got or usec
I was taught by a 65 year old man over 25 years ago how to weld. I've never been to school for welding. I use an old style Jackson welding hood. It's not arch flash. It's a typical old school welding hood. I weld Exxon gasoline tankers daily. And milk tankers a lot. The welder I use is a Miller from like 1980. My point is. Why do you need all these fancy welders with all these settings I don't even understand how to work. I'm thinking it's all unnecessary. Oh yeah, I use an old Ideal welder cracker box for welding 7018's. It has no setting at all really just an old dial for heat up and down. I pass welding tests every time they make me do them. With the machines I use everyday. It is what it is I guess.
I am self taught and prefer the old school welders. Both of my Mig's were made in the 1990's, I have a 1984 oil Oxford 180amp cooled AC stick welder and a 2002 Oerlikon Presto 140 G inverter welder which I use a lot in my videos and on farm repairs. Old stuff is perfectly good, no need to spend thousands of $$$$ or ££££ on welders, it is the man or woman working the arc the makes the weld not the machine!
Have you tried running AC for 5/32" uphill. I had a teacher tell me about it and it really works. I don't think a lot of places will allow the use of AC but definitely a trick to keep in your back pocket

Thinking 6013 root and cap, 7016/18 single pass, 7016/18 root and cap and then a typical 6010/11 root and 7016/18 cap! Would also love to know how a vertical down 6010/11 root with a 7016/18 vertical up would go! And have you ever found rod thickness/flux affects root penetration on a fillet weld or is it really only a concern on 3G with fitting in the groove? Just in my mind for example a 2.5mm 7016 is much smaller so sit tight in the V while a 5mm 7018 would be harder to keep tight in there! Thanks, Harvey
