My original theater build was not AT. I had my center underneath it. Changing the room over to AT is absolutely one of the best things I’ve done with the room. Highly recommended. Wish I had started that way. Rocking a 163” Seymour scope screen now.

It should not go without saying that you made a LOT of good decisions in real time when this beautiful home theater was being built. Good decisions were made back then and then quality improvements were made when new equipment became available.

Reason: studio monitors are affordable and sound great. While home theatre speakers are expensive, look great but not sure about quality.
Technically yes but you would need power to each speaker and an RCA from each preout on your AavR to each speakers. I don’t see the benefit of doing that.
Isn’t it an acousticALLY transparent screen? (Not a native speaker but seems more logical to me).
Following your channel I really see the benefits of such a screen. Would like to do a blind test one day to hear how it affects the sound from the speaker. In a setup such as yours it would be easy.

I have a very similar setup, same size screen, same fabric, similar seating distance. My l/c/r are Arendal 1723 monitors. When I have the l/r behind the screen, I find I have a collapsed soundstage like you describe, with diminished clarity, presence and impact. Still really good, but when I move those speakers out to the side and a little forward, they really open up, coming to life with sparkle and panache. Especially with stereo music content.
Which is a pity, because I, like you, appreciate the clean look of the hidden speakers.
It could be due to the design of your speakers. Not sure.
@@Youthman I did some more experimentation today inspired by your video and found that with speakers behind the screen but with less toe in, the do sound better. I also set up some front wides and using dts neutal:x up mixer in my av8805, I now have a vary close approximation in terms of sound stage to the 'ideal' l/r placement.
Hey Youthman, great intro to ATP screens! My current fabric is Stewart StudioTek 130 G4, 135” diag, 2.35:1, 1.3 gain, non-ATP. I will be doing a new room soon where I have the option to switch to ATP fabric, and I have been recommended to keep my current frame and use the same Stewart ST130 G4 fabric but with microperf. I believe your screen is woven, but still I’d like to ask you a few questions if I may.
1. I love that you have a 150” screen and you enjoy sitting so close. My MLP has been 10’ from my 135” non-ATP screen, but I’ve been recommended to go to at least 11’ and preferably at least 12’ with the microperf fabric to avoid seeing the holes, which would be a bit of a bummer for me since I too enjoy a closer more immersive MLP. Since you sit so close to your 150”, what has your experience been with noticing the weave?
2. Did you previously pair your JVC projector with a solid non-ATP screen before changing to your ATP screen, and if so, would you say you had a noticeable drop in image brightness/clarity with the ATP? I see mixed experiences online about this subject. I have a JVC RS2100 projector that has been professionally calibrated, and I watch everything on the Mid power setting except for 3D movies, and although I am pretty well satisfied with my current image, I don’t think I would be very happy with any noticeable dip in image brightness after switching to the microperf.
3. Any reason you would recommend I go with the woven screen instead of the microperf? Speaker distance limitations behind the screen will not be a factor for me - btw, I’m also running JTR LCR and subs in part due to your positive coverage of them!
4. After answering these questions, would you still say hands down 100% zero regrets that ATP is the way to go?

I know the was a year ago so who knows which direction you went but I'm in the similar position screen shopping. Perforated screens like the micro perf will require you to have the screen 8-12" away from your speakers to reduce comb filtering and damping. Also, being closer than ~11ft you might see the perforations on the screen. Woven doesn't have these issues although there are some woven that do need to be further away to limit seeing the weave.
I have the 3 X JTR 212 RT speakers with the SI AT screen. I attached the blackening AT mesh that is to keep speaker and cabinet reflection from coming through the screen. I can tell that the high vocals are cut a bit when the screen is in front, you can walk behind the screen wall and hear some of the missing highs.
A large impactor is my pb-16's running open port with the air hitting my screen making is noticeable during a movie. I had to turn my sub 90 degrees due to this.
AT screens are the bomb, but for high end music, you will find that you don't want that screen in front of any speaker. MY forte is movies, so I understand what I am giving up.
For music, I simply lift my screen and turn on my LED lights.
@tkcdac Your SI screen is also probably a perforated screen which also limits the sound pass through a bit compared to the woven fabric material of the Seymour screen. The woven material will always be the better option for a better sound.

It’s actually a downside. I had my equipment neatly stacked behind the screen for a while and found that the glowing LEDs and various info panels were quite visible. Yes, you can do your best to turn off any that have that facility, and cover others up with tape and whatnot, but I never quite got rid of it all. And if everything is not completely Matt black, you can sometimes get little reflections off the shiny surfaces that distract quite a bit. I’ve since moved my gear off to the side of the room and solved the problem
Yeah I would not advise putting anything equipment behind an AT screen.
wow man! That's huge! I'm looking to get a screen from Seymour as well and I just got my NZ8! Question, my room is also 13.5' wide, 17 ft deep. What is your throw distance with the NZ8? Also, when playing 16:9 content, does it bleed into the velvet or do you need to hit a different lens memory to adjust? thanks!

I do not recall ever seeing a curved screen in person so I’m not sure I can provide much insight on them
Hey Michael, Today is a good day for me. I’m finally leaving my media room days behind me. And now I’m starting my first Dedicated Home theater. My Epson 5050UB pro projector arrived today. I’m changing the grey paint color to a darker grey, I already have DIY acoustic treatment for the room. The Monoprice fiber optic HDMI 2.O 4k and a long length of 12v. Trigger cable. Any suggestion’s for cable type and brand? Thanks in advance.

Off-topic. Whatever happened to DTS in consumer electronics space? Why isn't there as much Dolby Atmos equivalent (DTS:X) movies in blu-ray or in movie theaters? Is DTS a dying company now?
Dolby has the vast majority of market share. DTS, AURO-3D and IMAX Enhanced are not nearly as popular but they are still around.

What is the distance from the bottom of the screen frame to the floor? Working on a dedicated home theater room in my unfinished basement. The area I want to utilize is almost identical in room dimensions though I'm limited to 8ft ceilings? Also is a 12 inch riser plenty for rear seats?

Youthman - Happy Father’s Day! Thank you for this excellent video. I just received samples from Seymour of the Center Point XD and UF fabric weaves. Seymour apparently says you should sit about 11ft from XD in order to not see the weave. I’m sitting about 10ft from the screen and the weave doesn’t seem that noticeable. Seymour says if the XD weave bothers you then use the UF fabric, which is an inferior fabric weave. How’s the weave for the XD for you sitting at 9 ft?
I do not have 20/20 vision but I have never noticed the weave myself.

That was the original plan but after seeing how many hours my friend put into the custom cabinet, there is no possible way I could hide the craftsmanship.

No your system is awesome, I been watching you change and delete for some time now. Once I get out of this rental and into my own house out of FL and into GA, I plan on having a dedicated HT. One step at a time, I especially like how you can raise and lower your screen. In the future you should get some actuators and hook to your hydraulic lifters and add your Alexa to it, so you can just say Alexa open screen. As far as the IMAX theater goes both ways just wondering which speakers were which it would s hard to tell whech ones are center the way they are incorporated. Take care and keep up the good work.
That photo is likely the left and center speaker. The right speaker is not shown. That’s why it might have been confusing. Most cinemas use identical speakers for their LCR.
I have considered the actuators for my screen but the ones I’ve seen are slow, loud and the other issue is I often have other speakers or lighting that are set in front of the screen and if I’m not careful, it could hit them. It would be a cool effect but manually lifting works fine for me

No audio benefit. I simply do not have the floor space in my smallish Home Theater.
I'm a little late to the table, but I didn't see anyone ask about loss of image brightness with an AT screen. Have you done any testing to compare image brightness with 1.0 gain AT vs 1.0 non-AT screen?
Unfortunately, I do not have the tools or an extra screen to be able to measure the differences. I can say that I will gladly accept a slight reduction in brightness for the benefits outlined in this video that an AT screen provides.
At this point what would it take to Perma replace your speakers rn if you where in the position to upgrade?
I literally cannot think of anything that I would want to replace my LCR and subs. It’s my end game.

however, where my screen would go, there is another room on the opposite side. any suggestions to still put the speakers behind screen and sound proof so that other room does not hear would be greatly appreciated.
It’s difficult to completely soundproof a room, especially if you have large subwoofers. My entire house hears my system

It doesn’t matter where you place the subwoofer, base waves are extremely long especially low frequencies and they will travel through most walls

@@Youthman That's interesting. Even Seymour would recommend UF at 9'. I think they say 12' minimum on the XD. But it doesn't show all that much unless it's a larger white or light area in the picture.
Keep in mind, Seymour does this for a living. The VAST majority of people that visit my theater are not videophiles. If you have great vision AND you are looking to see if you can see the weave during a movie, you might be able to see it.
Seymour customers are DIY Home Theater Enthusiasts, many of which could be videophiles. The last thing they want to have are returns because a customer isn’t satisfied.
It’s best to err on the side of caution and make sure you are within their recommended distance.

You may have mentioned this elsewhere, but what is the distance of your projector from your screen? I'd love to use a larger screen (I have the space) but I only have 12ft from my back wall to my screen. Anything that can be added to an existing projector to get a larger image without needing to purchase a different projector?
Unfortunately every projector has its own rated throw distance range. I had to place mine outside of my room it’s around 16 1/2 feet which barely allows me to achieve 150 inch. You can go to projectorcentral.com and use their Projector calculator to see the range that your projector will allow for
@@Youthman I was wondering how you achieved the 150" in your room and now I know how! Sadly I can't place the projector outside of my room/space, so I'll have to make due for now. I wish more higher end projectors would support mid range throw distances, or offer an alt SKU with slightly different optics, but I know my needs are niche within an already niche hobby. I would sand and paint the cabinets black. Some parts matte and some parts velvelt..
The original plan was to stain it ebony but once I saw how much detail was in the cabinet, there’s no way I would conceal it with paint or dark stain.

Most of what comes from the left and right speakers is sound that is off screen, both effects and ambiance.
Much more than that. Music score, dialogue from other characters on screen that are off to the side.
@@Youthman Yep, which is why I keep my L/R speakers outside the screen. I realize your room and screen size doesn't allow that option for you.
Somewhat off topic, I’d love to see a comparison between the Cap 4000s and the RS2s.
Should measure the same but with more output. I can assure you I absolutely do not need any more output in my room. I’ve measured 115dB at 8Hz and I’m now flat down to 5Hz.

What is your throw distance? I’m considering the same Seymour XD at 140in scope. I read on AVS that the actual gain on that screen is 0.8 and not 1.1. Based on audio advices calculator my Sony vplwx6000es won’t be bright enough with that gain at 19 feet. What do you think?

Did you ever think about having a curved screen instead of the flat one?
No real need to a curved screen in my setup.
I always thought a curved screen was to deal with the image distortion from using an anamorphic lens. I could be wrong but I think that's the reason they were once around but rare now there's lens memory and zoom.
Possibly so. I personally never considered using one and do not have an anamorphic lens

I’ve seen and am extremely irritated with the Moire Effect at first rate cinemas and on high dollar AT screens in Best Buy’s Magnolia Rooms. It completely turned me off of considering an AT screen for my home theater, but now Michael has provided us with the solution. Thanks!

Perf has less light bleed through producing a brighter image, but if you get too close, you will see the perf in the screen.

I’ll ask for the headphone option next time I got to the cinema, so.
I prefer watching Apple TV stuff with AirPods 3.Gen. for Dolby Atmos on a huge screen even with several speakers behind it. Try it yourself. It’s an option than you don’t want install a big sound system or someone want to sleep in the house. Apple TV supports more than one pair of AirPods. You don’t need a receiver. Just hook it on a Beamer.
I could not even imagine watching a movie with AirPods. Definitely not a good experience for me but if it works for you, go for it.
Fun fact: there is actually no such thing as a truly acoustic transparent screen
Acoustic transparent just means it is designed to allow sound to travel through it. There is a slight attenuation with the top end but room correction easily fixes that.
I have watched your build videos and all the work shows. Especially the hand made woodwork on the cabinet. I wanted to do a screen lift similars to yours to hide a OLED tv with the idea of saving bulb life. But just couldn’t make it work to my liken. Thanks for all your help with your videos.
I was considering upgrading to micro perf or weave, but was worried about seeing the screen texture. You sit about the same distance as I do, is that an issue?
Never an issue for me, but I also do not have 20/20 vision.
I have a very similar setup to Michael, with the same fabric etc. and it’s not a problem. Yes, you can see texture when the lights are on but once the movie stars it’s a non issue. Indeed, I even had a couple of ripples in my screen due to less than optimal tensioning, and these also melted away when the projector powered up, to such an extent that it took me months to work up the motivation to fix the screen, such was the negotiable impact.
That’s good to know others have had the same experience.

I sit usually 6-7 feet from my 135" screen and it's never been a problem. I even get in a little closer sometimes with 4K's. I don't see it being a problem unless you've got a low resolution source or are real sensitive to motion sickness.

Complete overkill on the substage for this tiny room. I will never understand why all of you Home Theater RUclipsrs go hog wild with the gear. Nobody needs 4 - 18" subs for this size of theater.
Nice video. I always enjoy your content. I never knew that movie theaters put speakers behind their screens although, it should have been obvious. Do you know of any projector that can display the same size quality image like at the movie theaters? I know it’s crazy but I I’d love to have as much of a true movie theater experience as possible.
Dolby Cinema uses (2) Christie projectors. If I had to guess, each projector is over a $100,000.
Very nice That's what I was going to ask about the the left center and right being too close to each other but the screen is so large that I didn't realize how far they are from each other awesome system, space is a bit of a problem for me
Yes if you don’t have the width for a massive screen, it’s best to place those speakers outside of the screen
my front seats are at 10.5 feet will i see texture or grain at my seating position (planning center stage xd 16:9 159")
The problem with a 150" diag screen scope is that a good projector calibrated will struggle to give decent FL at that size on a low gain AT screens as most of them are if it's a weave one.
The max angle recommended normally for scope is 50° so you are way higher than that but to each it's own .
I would never go with an AT screen until a top of the line projector like JVC can deliver enough Calibrated light to not take the hit in brightness, contrast etc depending on the screen selected.
A great center like the revel c208 can project sound beautifully as to fool you into hearing the sound coming from the screen.

Great video, I have been debating building out my front wall for an AT screen. It would jump my screen size from 106" to 135". It will eliminate my front of three rows, my MLP is currently in the middle row. But that would make the front row still on a riser and would be 9.5' from the screen.
It will be a lot of work to do it and I would have to move my projector back and it has in ceiling wiring and a power outlet right there so not sure how I would handle that.
You may have convinced me to take on the change as a winter project.
It’s not for every room but definitely I would consider it if I were you.
@@Youthman I have been thinking about it for a couple months now. It's just such a big job based on the existing room, I plan to take the next step and actually draw up plans as if I am going to do it and see exactly how much work needs to be done.
I can't put my subs behind the screen as they are too deep and my entrance is in the front corner so I can only pull the wall out 23" or it will interfere with the entrance door and my subs are 24" deep, so I need to build the subs mostly into the wall and have the platform for the speakers for above them. I should have room for 3" of Rockboard insulation behind all the speakers to help with sound.
The question is.....is 17" of extra screen worth all the work and expense??
That’s a question that only you can decide if it’s worth it.
Make sure you test samples of the AT screens before you commit. Make sure to test them with black backing because your screen will be dimmer and if you increase the current size, even more so you want to make sure you got enough light to provide an adequate image brightness. AT screens are not a panacea. They have their own share of cons not only pros
No screen is perfect, regardless of whether it’s AT or non-AT. There will always be trade offs. You have to determine what is most important to you.
Hey Michael! I was wondering how your projector handles scenes where the aspect ratios change, like in the obvious films such as the dark knight with its imax scenes. Since your screen is 2.35:1, does it switch ratios? Or does it just stay in that format. Thanks brother! 🤙
It switches but I mask above and below the screen. There are so few movies that switch aspect ratios, there is no reason for me to try and optimize my setup for mixed aspect ratios.

Interesting... I was looking at that same Seymour material myself a while ago while thinking about upgrading my room to a DIY AT screen. One question though... did you or do you notice any sound change at all when the screen is down compared to screen up - since it is easy for you to do this. Might be an interesting idea for a video for your channel - I wonder could you use some accurate audio mic to show the spectrum 20-20kHz when down and up to see any drop-off in any frequencies. I know you could just use yours ears, but probably not very accurate. I know slight drops can be compensated for by AVR built-in tech like Odyssey, Dirac etc
I have not done that type of measurements. Would be interesting but it’s common knowledge there is a slight attenuation at the top end when using an AT screen, but like you said, room correction can easily correct that few dB dip in the top end. All I can say is it sounds incredible to me having my LCR anchored directly behind the screen. I will never be able to have it any other way.

Absolutely end game for me. Currently still have Klipsch surrounds and Atmos. Eventually would like to move towards all JTR but Jessica took a 6 month leave of absence from teaching so no funds for the theater room lol

7:34 If you have a platform behind the screen and want to use floor towers you could (if they are flat on top) place them upside down on their head with risers to get the tweeter at the optimal height, or hang them upside down from the ceiling. Lucky for me, I have a low enough platform behind my screen that my 3 monoprice monolith T6 speakers can be placed on it and still have the tweeters at perfect ear level.

Well done , this will be my next upgrade. Clean area like actual theatre . Just one question: it's hard to believe that the screen is not moving at all with these huge 18" speakers? I know this is a transparent screen but we are talking of massive air moving from these subwoofers. So honestly, is the fabric moving? What's the distance between woofers and fabric? Thank you
I love that clean look you have there. If our small theater could be set up with an ats i would so do it, but with our small 12x12 space i don't think that could be done.

Is there a reason why you did not do a black backing on your seymour screen? - or is it because there is already a black background? I am discussing the purchase of a frame and screen from Seymour in the Fall 2024.
Originally, I was told I did not need it, as long as you’re background is dark you shouldn’t have any issues with reflections
But I would talk to Seymour. They’ll let you know what they recommend for your set up.
@@Youthman Many thanks for the clarification! Much appreciated. (My current screen has a black backing. Upgrading from 110 inches to 120 inches which is the largest I can go given my room’s unique structural features.) SeymourAV sent me several samples and I have attached them to my current screen, and as it happens, movie “faces” appear on those samples and in panning shots the differences in the faces really jump out at you. As it is, I am considering the differences between the Centre Stage XD material and Seymour’s Centre Stage UF2 material. (They sent me NEO too but it is twice the cost.) My movie fanatic daughter, husband and her 3 young children will likely make the decision. I find it heartwarming that all I have to do is whisper “movie” and everybody shows up within a couple days! Like bees to honey . . . every time. Heartwarming. Wifey goes into popcorn production mode . . . out comes the pop and liquorice, etc. All the kids toys stored outside the room suddenly appear inside including exercise balls that the kids bounce around on etc. Very cute to watch it all happen.

@@Youthman Thank you , one last question, if your screen is 140 in wide , how far in did you start your L and R speakers. from the edge of the screen , I'm asking because the calculation I am reading, the screen isn't wide enough to covers the speakers. Maybe in a prefect world the calculation is true. My room is 19 feet wide. but the depth is only 20 ft. but i want the 150 in screen .
My speakers are toed in towards the main listening position and are just inside the edge of my screen.

Image quality is amazing. I have guests that visit that didn’t realize a projector could look that nice. My screen is a weave so there are no perforations. I cannot see the weave at all when watching any content.

100%. The main reason for me is I just don’t have a big enough room to have subwoofers on the floor. There’s no inherent benefit to putting them behind the screen if you have the room.

Hi, i have a doubt. see, most of the movies and series in OTT channels are in 1.65:1 aspect ratio (if i am correct, or 1.85), rather than 2.35:1 aspect ratio. so, when we play the same in 1.65:1 aspect ratio screen, it will be showing in full screen. but when we play a movie in 2.35:1 ratio, we can see that with black bars above and below. we never have to change the focus of the projector. And how will be the projection in this 2.35:1 aspect ratio screen? ok, if we play a cinema-scope movie, we can see in full screen. and what if we play a 1.65:1 aspect ratio video here? will we see black bars on the left and right?

@@Youthman I bet. Like I mentioned we use the Pioneer Elite Andrew Jones 5.2.4 and it’s loud and clear but the compression is not there like what you have. I’d love to have an experience like that at home. Don’t get me wrong the SVS PB1000s pressurize the room but the mid bass is probably nothing compared to what you get. My time alignment is pretty spot on and the RTA shows a pretty flat curve but I am missing the volume you get at an actual theater. Just means I need to really sit down and decide what we want in the future.

19’ length includes the 4’ cabinet. So I essentially have 13’x15’ of floor space in front of my screen.

Lesson? Is an option not a lesson..a lesson would imply this is the best option when is not. It has its own compromises so it is up to each person to decide which option works best for our particular needs. I have an AT screen in a smaller room because it works for that room but for my main room, there is no way the AT screen will deliver because of low gain making me sacrifice the screen size or affecting the brightness levels. Different options for different situations.

Not everyone has the ability to do that, particularly in living room setups.
LOTS of reasons. First, AT screens will be dimmer than other screens which can limit how big you can go while keeping a good amount of brightness. Even the best projectors when CALIBRATED, will have issues lighting a 150" diag screen (16:9), for example to good levels. You can try high gain ones but then you have hotspots, shimmering, etc.
Some AT screens have issues like low contrast, low gain, perforation visibilities etc. I have tested all of the top ones so far (consumer level top ones) so they are far from the "PERFECT" solution some people like to claim they are.
I’m not looking for perfect, I’m completely content having a system that makes me grin from ear to ear every time I fire it up.
