    Welcome to 4K Motoring!
    Today we talk about our Garmin Zumo XT2, a dedicated motorcycle GPS unit. The Ducati Multistrada V4S in-built Sygic screen-mirroring navigation solution is, for lack of a more polite phrase, complete garbage. After quickly realizing this a while back, we turned to the reliable option of the phone on the handlebars with Google Maps. This has been both convenient and successful, using the RAM X-Grip Wireless Charging mount. That said, any more advanced route planning was still a pain. Enter, the Zumo XT2, the latest offering from Garmin for motorcycles. After about two months using it (Along with the Evotech Mount for the Multistrada V4), this has quickly become our go-to navigation solution, solving nearly all our previous complaints. Paired with the Cardo Edge helmet communicator, we now have a fantastic integrated riding experience.

    Thank you for the video. Great job.
    I guess I’ll have to look at some more videos on Cardo and figure out how to pair the phone to the Cardo and then the GPS to the Cardo so I don’t have to take my hands off the bar to call somebody .
    I’m really not a fan of the Ducati connect so I just dumped it and leave it blank on the bike not using .
    Thanks

    Great review...I have an XT2 on order. Off topic question. I see you have ASV levers. When I swapped mine, my quickshifter stopped working. When I went back to OEM lever, it works fine. Do you have a newer lever where they solved for that issue?

    • @4KMotoring
      @4KMotoring  2 месяца назад

      If you search my videos, I made one about that. There's a modification you need to make to the clutch lever. The Multi V4 clutch has two sensors, one that detects the clutch is in and one when the clutch it out. A small piece of plastic has to be glued to the lever to activate the "clutch out" sensor.

      The manual says the Zumo XT2 will shutdown if it receives less than 11v, so kind of? I would really suggest wiring it to an ignition power source as this is how it's intended to be used

    I had a Zumo 660 that I was happy with but 15 years old and now I have an XT2. I'm not satisfied with that. All the routes made in BaseCamp (or elsewhere) are recalculated during the import, the guidance is random, the automatic recalculation always wants to make you return to the route recalculated by the GPS up to a few hundred meters from the finish rather than offering you an alternative route. During recalculation, shapping points are removed. It's total nonsense 😆

    • @4KMotoring
      @4KMotoring  Месяц назад

      So far I have not done much in the way of route planning or GPX file creation so I'll have to test this out myself. I use it for its automatic route calculation pretty much exclusively. Good information though, I'll see what I can figure out.

    I use an XT2. I like the screen, but this generation of GPS from Garmin seems to have been rushed out. They seem prone to QC issues as well as a host of firmware issues. There are blocking calls in the software that essentially lock up the device until that call completes it's task. In some cases, that might be necessary. However, in most cases, the call should be non-blocking. If I save a pref, complete the save in the background and let me navigate the UI, etc. There are a lot of situations where the UI essentially locks up for up to 2 minutes or so. This is not good. Garmin needs to fix that.
    Also, their hardware is flaky. My first until locked up the UI for hours. Hard power resets would not clear it. If the unit was on a route, it would go back to it, but you could not interact with the UI in any manner via the touch screen. I sent it in for a replacement. The new unit restarts frequently. Sometimes after only being on for 2 minutes. Even if you haven't loaded a route, it does this. Sometimes it'll stay up for an hour and not restart. Sometimes it will remember after the quick reboot what route was loaded, so it's a less severe issue in those cases. Sometimes it forgets, though, and it can be a pain to navigate the menus to find your route for the day again. Some aspects of the UI can be customized, but collections are always at the bottom. I wound up deleting everything in Tread but the routes for my trip to make this easier on a recent 2 week ride.
    I'm in the process of returning this unit for one that won't reboot frequently. Hopefully the third time's a charm. I've used Garmin units since 2006. My two previous units did not have this problem. My most recent would get confused and say it couldn't route to the next waypoint and bail on my route, sometimes fairly often, but reload it and it would work for a while. It's screen was hard to read in direct sunlight. Bluetooth audio from the GPS while streaming music from my phone on the XT2 is WAY better than on my older Zumo 665. It's good, clear audio for both. Although, right after you boot stuff up, it might sound grainy for a minute or two.
    If Garmin can resolve the QC and firmware issues to make this a much more stable and reliable unit, it will be great. Their UI is really easy to use and the new screen is very visible in direct sunlight. It even works reasonably well in the rain. Being such a long time customer, I won't give up easy on this. I do NOT want to use my phone. I want that in my pocket so in any emergency, it's available.

      Well said.
      I had a difficult time getting my unit set up as it seemed to be stuck in a boot-loop. I took it off the bike mount and plugged it into a wall charger, it seemed to work fine after that. It has taken some getting used to, but now after using it for several months on several road trips, I really like it. I haven't personally experienced any of the glitches you seem to have. Fingers crossed my experience wont change. The only hiccup I really have is how my Cardo Edge handles switching between the GPS input and the bluetooth audio from the motorcycle. I don't rely on the GPS to handle any of the music streaming since my Multistrada already does that. The overall screen brightness, night dimming, and overall touch screen is fantastic. I really like the automatic updates with the Tread app connection.

      Gotcha. The Garmin is about 1100 Nits brightness as opposed to the Tripltek's 1200 advertised Nits. My phone runs up to 2400 Nits already.
      Typically my experience has been that the overall brightness has not been at all a problem, it is the dimming of the screen at night that seems to be more relevant, some of the devices I've tried don't get dim enough to not destroy your night vision.
      There is definitely some benefit to using whatever program you want, but I like having the Garmin system work the way it does. I have tested several Android tablets on motorcycles and have yet to find one I really like.

      Depends on scenarios, but with my handlebar placement, my phone can maintain greater brightness indefinitely as long as there is some airflow.
      But again, even on the brightest days in the Texas sun over the last month, 1100 nits was absolutely fine in the Garmin.
      I will reach out to see if I can get one to test. I've had a bunch of similar Chinese tablets lately that are pretty cool

    • @4KMotoring
      @4KMotoring  5 месяцев назад

      Need is such a strong word. Obviously with the Ducati we're already spending money on more that what we need. At a certain point, there's a convenience and ease of use factor that begin to justify the price (okay, not completely).

      @@4KMotoring My perception is we are being ripped off for a product that is not worth the money - just because we have a Ducati, which is a work of automotive art, does not mean we are daft enough to buy a re-badged bit of overpriced Chinesium - if you get my drift .

    • @4KMotoring

      I definitely get what you mean and in part I can definitely see your point. After using this thing I can see the r&d that went into it and I would imagine the programming time and development time cost money, which is passed on to consumers. I have several pieces of chinesium navigation devices that I've received as the operator of this channel, and I definitely think the Garmin is better than those... Is it worth its full asking price? That's a different discussion lol
