Just ordered one! You videos convinced me it was worth the upgrade. I like these kind of videos as well. They are good honest and straightforward reviews and are much appreciated.
Thank you sir, and congrats on your new Device. I really like the upgrade myself, even if it is a little bit on the pricy side. Thank you for telling me, I think it is hard to make reviews like this, so great to hear people like them. Cheers
Happy to hear your comments. Just have the XT2 today !. Payed 519€, that is already a big difference with the price you anounced in your video. Keep up the good work. Grts from Belgium
I thought the same as you, but a year ago I had to use a tablet for an event where the roadbook is digital, and after that there is no way to go back to GPS. It is much more comfortable, it opens up a world of possibilities, there are tablets for all tastes and budgets, some very resistant with more brightness than any GPS and resistant to water and shocks. From Garmin I only use their watches and download the maps.
We all have our different needs, and I still have yet to find a app on a phone/tablet that works as good as Garmin when it comes to routing and showing directions in a easy and visual way. I still go the Garmin way until something that is better comes on the market. Still there is just no real competition for me at least. Cheers
@@tshansen You're right. I have the Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 4 Pro, and for me, being able to use it with gloves, and most importantly, that it allows me to customize the buttons so that with one click I can switch between the Roadbook and the normal map makes a big difference on the routes more techniques. Regarding the applications, there are many, the one I use the most is Rally Navigator but because it allows me to create routes very easily.
Thanks for your honest review, Thomas. I tested the XT a couple of years ago for my scooter magazine and found it very good. Especially the bright screen. No problems at all during a test period of 8 weeks in all weather conditions. On asphalt the TomTom 550 might be a tiny bit better (also some apps like Calimoto or Kurviger), but the XT in adventurous mode is pretty good. Good knowledge of Basecamp is paramount for longtime happiness. As long as my Garmin 390s work I will use them, but would swap immediately to an XT once they're gone. Due to experience with Garmin I would give the XT2 a year of refinement. My experience: Never buy a brand new Garmin device ;-) Günter/Nürnberg
Thank you Günter. I have tried the tomtom my self, and did not like it that much. Maybe it has to do with not routing or showing many of the great gravel roads in Norway or should I say few 😂 Hahaha, you are not wrong. They normally use a year or to to update it to a working unit. But this time, it looks like a polished unit. But I will keep you all updated if I find anything. Cheers mate
@@mimimmimmimim Well, we all know Garmin ;-) I would never buy a new system from them due to experience. All the best with your XT2 (which I do like, also the XT), Günter/Nürnberg
Excellent review, specifically that you sorted out the difference compared with Zumo XT. Sure it is pricey, but definitely on my list now compared to before when I mostly saw a slightly bigger screen and Tread-app.
Thank you mate, glad you liked it. I always struggle a little bit whit this kind of reviews, and I don't want to make them like I'm reading from a spec sheet. Cheers
Thanks for this useful and honest review Thomas 👍 They added nice features to the XT 2 and I think the XT series are pretty good devices, very intuitive and easy to use. As a Garmin XT 1 owner myself (coming from a Zumo 500 😱), I am happy with the device capabilities, it suits my needs and it holds well in every weather conditions, onroad and offroad. So far I have never had any issue. BaseCamp is my friend now but it took a while to get used to it 😁
Thank you mate... Yeah, I think the XT series has been a great addition in the right direction for Garmin. I love the ease of adding tracks, sections of tracks in combination with waypoints/POI on the map in the xt2 and how easy you can move it around in collections on the fly to make a great plan for what ever country you are visiting. Basecamp took some time to get used to, but when you understand it, it is a powerful tool.
Brilliant review! Especially the explanation of the Explore and Tread apps. I've been trying to get an understanding of how they work together. I plan on retiring soon, and will be purchasing the XT2 for my Super Tenere. Lot's of trips to take!
Great review and explanation on the device, I have a Zumo XT 1 and after having all the problems with this one I might not upgrade I dont think its worth the hassle. But thank you Thomas once again great ADVICE video
Sorry to hear that Tristain, tell me about the problems you had, I had no problem with mine unit, but I read online that some have encounter some issues. Glad you enjoyed the video. Appreciate that. 👏🏻
The Zumo XT Freezes, while on route and wont turn off, the music used to turn off my SENA, the routes would not give the correct information and the correct roads you are riding, the maps freeze at random times while riding, the maps give routes where there is no roads, when i was updating my vehicle log it randomly got stuck on spacebar and the keyboard M, while i was selecting a route when i was traveling to MOROCCO it was stuck on the where to and View map ICONS ..... the list goes on and when i tried to return it to the company they refused to refund and then i tried garmin and they just said i need to return it to the company I bought it from... Basically either HELPED so I am stuck with a device thats faulty even after several RESETS.
@@AdvenTrisMoto Yeah, stories like this are something every business should address no matter what. It would be so easy to take it in, check it and even give back a refurbish unit so the customer would be happy. I understand your frustration.
yes I agree, but they refused sadly, I even asked GARMIN if I could send it to them direct and they said sadly no because I bought it from MEDIAMARKT in Austria. I will use try to use it and Have Google as a back up, then when I have the money I will buy a New GPS like CARPE Iter. I have been told they are Excellent
I have just upgraded from the XT to the XT2 for the ability to use the Tread App for routing. I have found that the Tread app very sporadic in calculating the fastest route whils avoiding motorways, Sometimes it has superimposed a section of the route where their are no roads, or fails to select the fastest route. Route planning on the device works well.
I have not found that to be an issue where in Norway yet, but I normally don't use the app to create my routes, I plan my routes on a web app or software. But I will look more into this and see if this is the case for me as well. Thank you for letting me know
Another issue I had was with enviromental zones on, it sometimes made the route uneccessarily long.I turn it off now.I went to Norway in June , We rode around the Bergen area and did 6200km in 10 days.It was fantastic! @@tshansen
I am on the fence upgrading to the XT2. I have been using Rever and Scenic app to create routes on my iPad, export GPX as a track then convert to trip on the XT1. While this is not perfect, at least I don’t have to bring my laptop on the trip to run Basecamp. It only works as intended if you disable recalculate though. I may wait a bit to see how Tread matures. My XT1 is fine for now.
Like everyone else. Im considering the xt2. The issues freak me out for the cost. ARE YOU HAVING ANY SOFTWARE ISSUES RECENTLY? thank you for the content. I found it very helpful
I understand you mate, and no! I have not had any issues with my unit. I was out riding for 4 hours the other day, just after the last update and no issues what so ever.
Thank you for this informative presentation. It's pretty amazing what this can do. This is my first GPS so I haven't figured out how to work it, and this helps. I took this unit on a road trip recently, and my first observation is that it cannot find my home address, nor my sister's address where I was headed on my trip. No super useful in that regard. Once on the trip, the navigation aids were nice, and it did help me plan my fuel stops with confidence.
Could not find your adress? That is the first one i ever heard of 😂👏🏻 where do you live? Are you sure you have the correct Maps for your region? I find it to be really good in this regard here in Norway? But that could offcourse differ in other countries! Glad you liked the video, appreciate that
@@tshansen yup. Neither my home address, not my sister’s, was in the system. I have a three year old home, and hers is about the same. I bought the unit straight from Garmin at the suggestion of a good friend who works for them. Hilarious!
Well Thomas, you nailed this review. I have exhausted myself looking for a balanced take on this unit, especially in light of other reviews which put me on point re the spontaneous shut down issue. You answered all my questions! Maybe you answered this question as well, but if so I apologize for not recognizing it….doubtless due to the newness of this tech together with its language to me. But the last piece of the puzzle for me is to understanding if there exists both the detailed maps and apps, etc. that are compatible with the XT2, for off road backcountry routes? I am not looking for any detailed explanation of how they may work if they exist at all……just want to know that they are in fact available. Thank you very much indeed for a most helpful review. Greetings from BC, Canada!
Really glad you found this review helpful mate. Let me see if I understand your question correctly, you are looking for a detailed map and an app that is compatible with the xt2. All route planers that makes GPX files are compatible with the XT2, you just need to transfer the routes or trails from your phone to the unit. If I did not understand your question, please tell me more about it so I can try to help you. Cheers ☕️
I was really happy with the upgrade from XT1 to XT2 for numerous reasons (route planning, unit speed, better adventurous route planning, ...) but suffered a on-resettable touchscreen freeze, a problem that is quite common apparently. Unit to be replaced under warranty.
My Zumo XT2 had the complete freeze problem with 2 units. First After 500km, warranty changing. Second one after 700 km out of order. Got my money back.
Thx..this was video helped me to make an order of XT2. I have cheap Oukitel phone and Kurviger and I was thinking to use them for this summer navigation...but now I'm not..:D. I will use Kurviger for planning routes (I hate basecamp) but from your video I saw how easy is transfer routes via phone to XT2.
Glad to hear that mate. It is really simple and easy to use a route planer of likning and just transfer to the unit trough your phone. And I love how bright and good the screen is. Cheers
Nice review/tutorial 👍 The unit looks very polished, but I have to agree when it comes to the price. I bought a second hand dust/waterproof tablet for nok2000/eur200 (two years old, but almost unused). The price diff is quite big 😮
Thank you Hestad 🙌🏻 Well, in this case, yes it is expensive but I think you get a little bit what you pay for. I use this unit so much I really can't "afford" the hassle with a dim screen, or something that does not charge or need to be updated every 2 days... Now I'm ranting 😂 Well, it is like we say here in Norway. What is best? Pest eller kolera 😇
Thanks for the very informative review. My TomTom Rider still does a great job (also in Norway) but the screen is outdated (TomTom have not been upgrading the Rider for years now). The XT2 seems to be a nice upgrade. I would only use part of the functionality since I always make my routes on a PC/Laptop with MRA - My Route App. I understand the XT2 works well with GPX routes imported from third party applications like MRA. The lowest price is now EURO 499,00 so it becomes a bit more affordable by now.
Thank you Sir. Appreciate that, and really glad it was helpful. Yeah, TomTom has been off for years, and I don't see it as a valid option anymore. I really like the xt2 this far, and had no issues with it. I use Stegra.io and Myroute-app for all mye route planing myself. So this will work perfectly for your trips.
Just got the xt2 and love it, I’m not computer savvy and I’ve managed to sort out my up coming tour in France without too much problem via the tread and Bluetooth, if I can do it anyone can Thanks for the vid
Thank you sir, this is really golden information, seams like Garmin made it easier for the general user to operate and plan with this devices, compared to the old basecamp
Great to see Garmin make moving gpx files easier than it was on the legacy units! Might consider buying this unit in 6” to use with both my bikes. Phones are nice but they have their limitations.. especially during winter phone gps is not happy about the cold. Wonder how this would work in -15’C…
Hello my friend 🤩👏🏻 yes, it is much easier and so much better to navigate with this unit compared to older versions! I really want to test out the 8 inch tread unit! I think this would be the perfect do it all unit! Not sure how it works in really low temps? I know the Montana 600 series works really well in low temp, we used this in our rescue service earlier
Great review. I’m having some recurring issues with my XT2 - I have had screen freezing (totally unresponsive touchscreen) on 3 units now, Garmin have been very responsive but I’m now awaiting delivery on a 4th warranty replacement. I love the features and the unit as a whole - just hoping for a unit that lasts more than a couple of months between failures.
@@user-xk4yj8qr2u Any update for us? Has the problem been resolved? 3 Units is either very unlucky or some other issue? Firmware or some component of the unit?
So… I am sending unit number 4 back with the same screen freeze. Hopefully unit number 5 will be the lucky one. I have heard that there has been a hardware revision to address this problem. I’ll keep a note of the hardware version and see if it has indeed updated.
@@user-xk4yj8qr2u Mmmm OK, well thanks for replying. I'll google around and see how big an issue it is/was. Yes please regardsing the Version update please. Thanks very much!
Really great review, anewering questions and You also show the great part of connectivity. Do i also see the houses of two Tjommi's? 👀😂. I really like the quality of Your videos, the studio development and all visual effects. Tip top Tjommi! ...some grey hair in the beard ...or just sun bleached as my mother said about mine showing up 😂🙌
Thank you so much Tjommi 👏🏻 Hahaha, you have a great eye. It may be the location of two partners in crime you see on the map there 😂👏🏻 Great to hear this, my studio has become quite nice to work from, so it makes it easier to make videos like this in front of my computer with my script etc. Haha, I did not have a single gray hair before I met an old FYYFF in the woods in Sweden. After that my hear is getting whiter every day 😂🥃 Cheers
Thanks for this good review. Unfortunately water got into my zumoZT and fried it so I am looking at options. I decided against a tablet and DrivemodeDashboard, I'm not a fan of Android and I don't need all the functionality. Thanks for confirming it works with the xt wiring, I wasn't looking forward to rewiring my 2 bikes! I agree with the price being too high, I feel like I have no choice but to pay a premium since I use my Garmin every day. If it wasn't fried I wouldn't think of upgrading to the xt2, it kind of sucks, but the upgrade seems worth it at least.
I'm not a fan of android either... the Drivemode dash is going places and can be a really good option down the line. The one thing that surprise me how slow and old fashion the new tech from Garmin is. compared to other tech stuff we got on the market. For now, for me, Garmin is the winner. But it bugs me that you need to be a Garmin expert to operate it with ease 😂 For me the XT2 is a really good upgrade and I'm glad I did it, but I'm also glad I got at a discounted price. It is way to expensive
@@tshansen As archaic as some of the tech is (720p, really?), it starts up in seconds and is bright enough to use in the sun, unlike my iPhone. The next iteration of DMD may get me, I like the idea of an alternative but would rather have a FOSS solution, though I think the price of DMD is absolutely worth it.
My unit had some issues with the screen freezing up. Garmin replaced the unit without hassle. De readability in clear sunlight is unsurpassed. Thanks for posting.
Glad to hear the customer support works out. You hear so many stories online, but I have never had any issues my self. Thank you for letting me know. Cheers
Nice review. I have the original, XT. The drive app can sync GPX files, but cannot do anything dynamic. The ability to change things while out on a ride it’s nice.
Thank you Jason. I have both and I still wish their software side was better on both units. It is better on the xt2 but you are still reliant on other route planners
Spot on very nice review. ❤ Got my self the old version, but after updates it almost as good as the new one. I have to agree on it all, even thq i only have the old version. Regards PMO FZ6 S2
Thank you sir. Glad you enjoyed it. So they did updates to the old versions as well? That is good to hear. I really enjoy how well the XT2 has become now.
Great informations, I am considering to possible buy one so your video is very helpfully for me. I am on the same page with you, for these days with all the others options out there the price is way too high. Thank you and ride safe !!
Thank you mate... Yes, it is a great unit, but they should really dear to sell this at a much lower price. They would probably sell so much more units. Because there is just too many cheaper options. Yes you could argue if they are better or worse, but at half the price, people would accept that is not as good.
Great video, thank you. I’m the classic type of person to buy this, but even though the price I can’t afford, I have three motor banks, Ducati de Bal, V4, a BMW S 1000 R and a BMW R1250 RT, but it’s difficult to justify the price, all the more when I see what a confusing and aggro software, phone app, not really sure, then I think sticking with a phone using Apple maps or Google Maps, which are both downloadable is hard to justify the move away. At 400 maybe. I suppose what I’m clumsy trying to say is that it should be a no brainer purchase for somebody like me.
Glad you liked the video. I know it is a bit cheaper today, then when I released this video, but there is so many things to consider. But most important, what do you use the navi for? Can a phone app be good enough? or do you need more?
Your right it is expensive. But the graphics look good and screen seems responsive. I’ve had it with TT 550. I was near Gardermoen two weeks ago I wanted to go to the pier at for photo op and TT couldn’t locate City Hall (Rådhuset) I knew there was tunnels and turn off I was pressed for time so I couldn’t afford to get lost. I know the mapping is poor but this was beyond useless. I ended up using GoogleMaps I will plan a solo next year and will be taking in the ARB festival too. So I’ll be taking a Garmen. It will probably take me the year to save 😂. Once again great video excellent as usual. Tussen takk.
I had the TomTom 550 for a brief time just after it was released. But I quickly found out it could not be used with offroad tracks so I delivered back to the store who promised me something completely different. I have been using gamins ever since, and have been really happy with them for what it is. The only thing I miss is the option to read RoadBooks
You and me both mate.... I really hope to get out on the road again soon. But so much is happening at the moment, and all plans seams to get crashed by stuff that I can't prevent. But there will be more sooner or later 🙌🏻
The main reason I'm considering upgrading from an XT to the XT2 is the XT2 is supposed to support tracks with 100,000 waypoints where the XT will only do 10,000 waypoints. It seems that the last year or so more and more of the adventure riding tracks I download have too many waypoints to be displayed on my XT.
Just would like to inform you that I have experienced some issues with mine lately. The tread app and the unit does not sync, so I can't get gpx files (tracks) to load on the unit. It's driving me crazy
Thanks for the review master Thomas! I am about to order one but still searching if there are better/cheaper solutions like those Chinese gadgets from chigee/carpuride/innovv that use android auto. Now that you got rid of it, are you using DMD2? How is your experience so far?
@@desertovercrowded2290 i’m still on my garmin, been using Stegra iPhone app lately, and i will Get myself a DMD2 setup now in august so i can give a proper go at that as well!
Excellent video, very useful. I bought the Garmin last year for a trip to Europe. It’s a great piece of kit, and clearly has more functions than I know how to use. Keep up the excellent videos. Ride safe. 👍
Excellent review-you answered the question, “are you thinking what I am thinking, particularly around the apps”. One question, for off road, do you trust the heavier unit in its cradle?
thank you mate. I have tried it for some serious off road riding in Latvia this weekend, and it did not come loose, nor did the zumo xt1 so I’m confident in the cradle
Thomas, this is very off subject. I was scanning the TV channels and found an old movie from 1943 with Errol Flynn and Ann Sheridan. This great movie was about a village called Trollnes, Norway and it’s resistant during WW II. It’s very pro Norwegian. Just a thought. Ride safe and have fun. 🇺🇸
You are probably referring to the old video, based on the book with the same name... Edge of Darkness? Here in Norway I think the title was Like før Daggry?
@@tshansen, you’re correct. Edge of Darkness and I’m not sure why I didn’t include the title. I thought in was an interesting film. I had never seen it before. Ride safe and have fun. 🇺🇸
great review. I just returned a Zumo 396 because the screen was so unresponsive. It responded, but slowly and erratically. Is the screen of the XT1 as responsive as the XT2 and is the guidance feature as informative and precise, as your comments about city navigation indicate? I have a chance to get an XT first edition for a good price. Thanks... t
The XT and XT2 are pretty similar in response yes. The XT2 is slightly better in my opinion. You coming from a 396 will see a huge upgrade. Yes, this city guidance is the same on both unit as far as I remember. I think this comes more down to the map navi they use, and that is similar for both units. Cheers
You can export your log to avoid route registration. All the travels you are making when the znmo is on are registrated in the log. Nice video anyway! 😊
Yes, this is true! You can choose to turn it off, but if you keep it on, all travels on the unit is recorded and separated by date and stopping time (I think) But if you use the tracking feature, you can choose to store only certain parts, that you know you want to keep. Not having to go back and find the section in a larger file that contains much more tracking. I use this feature all the time when scouting routes and gravel roads
I'm close to smashing my XT2 with a hammer :) I was hoping you were going to show creating a route in the Tread app natively. I have tried a few times but it ends with a mess. I have also found imported route trip routes freakout at the beginning so i have to go down the road and start them from there. Really wish Garmin would make route planning easier to do, I sold my XT and bought this because I thought they had
Hahaha, feels like the same when I first started using Garmin Basecamp to plan routes. It is quite easy (I think) to make routes in the app natively. I may do this in a separate video. Just to show how it is done. But if you want to make your life easy, get a route planner like Myrouteapp, Kurvier, GPX-studio etc. These are all much easier to use both on computer and smartphones. And just import it to the unit.
@@tshansen About 30 mins after I wrote that I found a video that showed how to plan a route in Tread and it's quite easy. My issue was having a start and end point and trying to shape the route in between. You can do it in Tread but it's cumbersome like most Garmin software. Easiest way is plotting the route with new destination end points. Still does a few weird things when you try to make the end point the same as the start point i.e. round trip. Tomtom's MyDrive system is far easier to use, it's a shame they havent updated their hardware in such a long time and no topo maps. I have used MyRouteApp in the past with good success but they are quite expensive now
@@tshansen The killer feature that I would like to see addressed is fully offline phone/tablet garmin gpx transfer and management. For instance there are many locations here in the western US with poor or non-existent mobile signal (UT, WY, ID, MT). Have history with Montana 6xx and 7xx series. Being able to create a gpx file on my phone/tablet using for instance OsmAnd+, save to phone file folder then transfer to XT, or record track on XT, transfer to phone/tablet, manipulate gpx file in OsmAnd+ (cut/paste sections, waypoints, etc.) then move back to XT. This would address a lot of evening ride planning or enroute rerouting due to weather, fires, geographic, trail conditions (eg. deadfall) or ability issues. For instance you get a gpx or text update on trail conditions for a planned route while on a mountain top, lose data enroute back in the bush, next break you are able to manipulate the gpx on your phone/tablet and send to unit. Sometimes the next gas is 50 or more miles away and off intended direction. Granted this is a unique situation but offline gpx transfer would be a great feature.
The last 12 years I've always owned/used TOMTOM Navi for biking. But meanwhile I'm seriously more and more unsatisfied with my TOMTOM 550, because of unexpected breakdowns, missing the possibility to export data for showing them on a map with altitudes ... In my opinion the ZUMO XT2 would be the only logical alternative device . But ... I've saved about approx. 200+ Waypoints in my TOMTOM; so ... is there a good and practicable possibility to transfer these waypoints to GARMIN ZUMO XT2? This woud be really crucial. Thanks for this perfect video! regards, Alexander
@@alexanderkolonja7006 well, I have had my share of bad luck with the newest updates on the zumo xt2. You could export all waypoints in a gpx file to the garmin explorer web page! But there is no guarantee that it will sync with your device! I have jumped over to a android device from Thork Racing and never going back to garmin again
Thanks for the review. I really like your content. I have bought myself also a XT2 and I'm unfortunatelly not too happy with it. The biggest issue I have encountered so far is that due tu the fact that there is only a motorcycle profile available it's impossible to calculate a route on small gravel roads like "UPPER SALT ROAD". Might be that I'm to stupid to do it, but I'm struggling. That's one of the reasons why I'm going to sell it again. Did you experiance something similar?
Thank you sir, glad you like my content. Well, I don't use the unit for calculating routes on minor roads etc. Because I know that the Garmin maps can struggle a lot with that. I always plan those kind of trips on my phone or computer, and then export it as a track I put visible on the map. I only use route calculating when it's getting late, I need the fastes route to a hotel, campsite or back home.
F.F.S Thomas...my brain is hurting!!😂😂 . I want to get a dedicated sat nav, as i use my smartphone for photos but this is a bit too expensive and complicated i think, although the graphics look good. Cheers Steve
I too am on same bond with XT2. Annoyed as it sometimes feels like bit untested beta product but trusting and waiting for new firmwares to fix that. Wife inherited my XT and is happy with it.
For a cross country adventure rides with some amazing view would u recommend montana 700 or XT2. Because XT2 doesnt has profiles like montana and specific for motorcycle but i have heard sometime it miss some amazing roads that can be covered on motorbike
Well, to be honest I have a love and hate relationship with Garmin. It does something incredible well, and on the other hand it completely fails. That's why I don't use Garmin Devices anymore. With resent updates it is really hard to upload routes and tracks to the unit and that is a feature I really need on my nav units. I would save some money and go for a rugged smartphone or tablet instead. But if you really want a Garmin unit I would choose the XT2 or the Garmin Tread.
I sold my original XT because of Basecamp- if I wanted to upload something mid trip, it’s a pain in the arse, as I’m not taking my laptop with me. Devising a route in the XT was also a pain. It appears the XT2 has overcome both of these issues with the Tread app.
Yes, it is a huge step in the right direction, but I’m not used to the tread app yet, i think it can be a little bit hard to use the phone for this sometimes, but yes the option is there. Finaly.
Excellent review and very helpful. Thank you! One question. Do you know if it is possible for other riders who do not have the zumo xt2, to track your position from another location using the Thread app on their own phone?
From what I understand, you can't use the tread app that way on your phone without a zumo xt unit or a Tread unit. But this is something I'm not quite sure on. I need to take a better look at it. Cheers
Good video thank you. Can you use the EXPLORE app on a desktop PC to plan and make detailed routes - like you could in Basecamp? Basecamp does not connect to my XT2, is this the same for you?
Yes, this is same for everyone! Zumo xt2 does not Connect! But you can make routes/tracks in basecamp, download them to your computer, send it to your phone and open it on thw unit. Planing detail trips in explore i’m not sure of! That is for hiking, and i think it does not have nuvi map, like tread
Please tell me why you chose a Garmin XT2 when you could get a Tomtom 500 at half the price? I got the 500 with a used bike I bought. It's fantastic. I don't upload routes or way points anymore. It's much easier to do it on the unit itself.
Question: are there any hard buttons that you can map to a function? ie. on my 680 I mapped the power button to automatically create a waypoint while riding and following the map. The unit would generate a waypoint without changing the current map use. This is a valuable feature as I could waypoint a location for future exploration (eg. offshoot trail, treefall, potential reroute, etc.) Edit: no hard button mapping on XT2/Tread unfortunately.
I don’t think there is a option for this 🤔 need to check it out! But one touch on the screen icon and you can add a waypoint that way! So i really can’t see the use for it
You are welcome sir. Well, I have tried most of the Montanas except the latest 700 series. I know that it has some quirks and are not that intuitive to use. What makes you consider the Montana series?
Hi Thomas! What kind of mount do you use for the XT2 (or the XT) on the T7 going on offroad tracks like the TET? Are there different options and at what cost? Thans in advance!
I use this from Perun Moto ➡️ www.perunmoto.com/collections/yamaha-tenere-700/products/r12-bar-clamp-amps and I have made a own bracket (3D printed) to secure the rod that holds my gps to prevent the GPS from shaking too much. You can find information about that in this video ruclips.net/video/_PhXSj0qFqs/видео.html
I have the XT. I’ve had a few previous motorcycle Garmins before that. One thing I hate is the audio quality on turn by turn. It clunks in. Especially when playing music. It’s horrible and the quality of the instructions is bad. I was ready to sell mine in favour of motorcycle Sat nav apps on my phone. But what I found is my phone (iPhone 11 pro max) often loses GPS signal rendering the Sat nav app useless. The Garmin works flawlessly. So my question is, have they improved the audio quality of the turn by turn instructions? I’m guessing not? Thanks for your video.
Sorry I can not help you with this question, because i have never used the turn by turn navigation voice on any of my devices. I always put them to mute because i only find it distracting. Sorry 👏🏻
Excellent review thx! I have the Zumo XT2 but I find that it likes to change the routes that I’ve created with the Tread app when I sync which is very frustrating.
I have not used the tread app all that much, but do you have the same avoidance settings on both unit and app? or some recalculating on auto on the unit?
Yes, that was my first thought so I unchecked all the avoidances on both units. Alas the problem remains. Almost every route that I create in Tread gets changed by Zumo upon sync’ing.
I had an online chat session with a Garmin tech y’day. Completely useless. Seemed like they weren’t completely competent with the unit as they suggested features that both didn’t exist or had nothing to do with the problem. They also suggested adding more shaping points to the routes I create which, because you’re adding complexity to the route, predicatably causes Zumo to alter the route even more when sync’d. I would add this too, even if there was some avoidance or setting that was different between the systems, would you not expect the system to warn you when you sync and ask you to confirm your preference instead of just unilaterally altering a route you took precious time to create?
@@sbrooks5683 This is a story we all have heard so many times before. It looks like some people at Garmin don't really know their products like we do. I need to investigate this more on my own unit to give a good reply for you. (no, I have nothing to do with Garmin my self)
Hello sir! Great review! Thank you. Just so I can be clear. I have the XT. Want to go to XT will I have to change the wiring on the mount? I know the mount works but do I need to change the wire. I just spent a ton of time rerouting my wire for the XT and don't want to mess w/ it again if I don't have to. Thank you!
No, you don’t need to do anything with the wire or the mount! It works and fit’s perfectly with the zumo xt2. I had the same issue as you and really did not want to reroute the wire! There is no need 👏🏻
Nice explanation! I'm thinking of buying the XT2. I'd like to use the OEM cradle of BMW GS1250... Do you know any adapter to fit it similar to the 3D AM? 🤝
Thank you for this well made video, but even though I spent many hours trying to get my new XT2 to work by watching a dozen tutorials (Garmin, Touratech, etc.), I'm ready to bring this thing back to the store. I followed your example, but at 5:40, you show your GPX file as the "2 feet" icon (sorry for my ignorance) when mine shows the 26 waypoints. When I touch "Routes" my route is now a straight line instead of the route that I planned. Then I go to the XT2, click on Explore, Routes, Yes to "Recalculate the route to work with this device" and my route is on the highway instead of being the route I planned... Do you think my XT2 is malfunctioning? Or am I doing something wrong? Thank you.
Well. There is some issues with the tread app and the device when it comes to routes! I always use Tracks, this makes a visable Line on the map, but i don’t Get turn by turn navigation! So i prefer it like that, plan out my rutes on my computer and then import it on my device as a track with attatched POI 🤔
Thank you for the nice and informative video! I’ve been thinking of buying the MRA package and using it both for route planning and navigation. I like the idea of using my phone for navigation and I really like what MRA is offering. I know you’ve been using MRA for planning but I am wondering what you think of their navigation now that they’ve updated it? Is it something you could recommend?
Thank you Oliver, glad you liked it. Yes I have been using MRA since they first launched and have been using them on and off all the time. But never their app, because of obvious reasons. But I got a tip a couple of weeks back about their new update, so I'm planing to test this out and see if it is a valuable package (in my opinion and use case) Sorry I can't say anything about the app it self, but their route planer is absolutely amazing.
thanks for the interesting video. I still use the tomtom rider 400. It's a bit older and maybe I should get a new navigation system. When is your next travel documentation coming out?
That is a tiny bit older yes, for sure. I never liked the TomTom units. I'm currently packing my bags for my bike, so I will try to do as much riding as possible in the time forward. But it has been a crazy spring/summer, with so much stuff going on with the family life. So I have not have time to ride as much as I wanted. But there will be more. much more 😇
Hi, I have a question I am based in the UK and I should get the new unit or is the last gen is enough if I am not planning to go off-road. Regards Greg
It would be good to see how it compares to the Montana 700 as they are a similar price. The XT2 seems to have greater connectivity regards headsets for navigation whilst riding
If I'm not wrong you asked me about this on the picture I put up? I could not get my hands on a Montana 700, so I could not do a fair comparison. Maybe in the future if I get it I can make a video just about this.
Montana 7xx has a well documented shutdown/ tracking issue for the past 2 years and no solution published yet (search Garmin forums), very frustrating even after RMA. M6xx series has less features but is dependable. Looking forward to trying out the XT2.
Hi great content as usual I hope u don't mind me asking more questions as they pop up in are preparations for a Norwegian trip next June from N.Ireland but one of them is do we need to carry the bike tax book (title) while travelling in Norway
Feel free to ask anything, I will try to help you the best I can. That is actually a good question, as a Norwegian you only need the vehicle registration card and I have not heard about this from anyone before. But I will take a quick search and come back to you if it is needed.
I am looking for a reliable dedicated motorbike navigation solution and I'd be happy with "just" a navigation device as Garmin XT2, BUT: I do need the possibility to plan long and complicated routes with plenty of waypoints on a computer - I can't do that on a mobile phone only or having to use 2-3 apps to import/export/transfer... Since Garmin decided not to support a decent solution to plan on a computer it's sadly a no go for me.
Have you never used Garmin Basecamp? Yes, you can't plug in the xt2 and read the device in the software, but you can export the track or route and then upload it to your sat nav trough your computer or phone.
Hi, thank you for the great review, i have two questions, as on the XT it was not working well. The voice for navigation was interrupting music and came in 80s phone quality to my cardo, it switched from hifi to phone bluetooth. Which made me crazy, cause every cheap android can do this better (by just overlaying voice over music). And the second, do raindrops still messing up the display ? Did they fix it in XT2 ? THX
I don’t use voice navigation on my unit, so i could not tell if that is better or worse than the xt. I don’t use the music player or any of the other “features” on the device. When it comes to the screen…. Trust me, here in Norway it rains…. I have not had any issues with the xt nor the xt2 so far. Still early to tell about the xt2 because it is so new. But so far so good.
I have the bmw navigator 6, which is basically a garmin unit. the whole UI is so sluggish its a pain to use so I thought about getting the zumo xt 2 instead but I see it's still as laggy I dont understand how you can say the UI is responsive, it's horrible compared to google maps or any gps app on a phone.
thank you . i have zumo 595 but needs repair, so thinking of xt2. looking for answer on radio unit. can you update to the radio after purchasing regular xt2. thank you again
@@lesterxxx7642 You are thinking about the group ride feature that is included? I’m not sure if that is radio? More like you can see a dot on your map where your buddy is. I have not tried this properly myself yet. I’m the only one of my friends who got the xt2 yet
How do you upload your route and track on the device with my route app? I rather bypass the tread app and copy the gpx file in the gpx folder on the unit, it looks like it is the only right way to get it right , what’s your opinion about this?
I just download the route to my phone and upload It to my unit trough the tread app. As far as I know, not testet it on my XT2, but did it on my XT. was to copy files directly to the folder on the unit's memory card as you say. There are different ways to do this, but you find a workflow that works for you. I would recommend you to turn off all avoidance in the unit, so the unit itself does not recalculate the route when you show it on the unit, then it can become different from what you made in Myroute app.
Do they offer a trade in program to upgrade from the XT to the XT2. In the US it’s $599.99 USD. Not a big increase but yes expensive nonetheless. Ride safe and have fun. 🇺🇸
Hello. I am really confused with how so many people say this device is responsive when in reality it stutters more than my 5 year old phone and the map refresh rate is well... slow. Am i missing something here?
You know it is allowed to have different opinions right? with that said, I do think most people think it is responsive compared to other or older Garmin devices. And we need to loose the opinion that a smartphone can do it all. It comes down to personal preference.
Hi, I was using Garmin Montana T680 and the Basecamp app was terrible, the unit it self was quite good in terrain but on road there were problems all the time. I moved to TomTom 410 and was much better on road but worse in offroad but to plan trips like through few countries this device worked fine. Now I consider to try Zumo Xt2 and have some doubts. How does the Zumo Xt works with TET tracks is the coverage accuracy? All way points are able to go through them or device calculates some other roads and change track on it's own?
It works really well with Tracks, but it works as an overlay on the map. If you choose to turn the track into a route you should know what you are doing and will most likely (in some countries) meet some problems because some of the TET track is on roads that is not shown as roads on the Nuvimap. But if you upload it to the unit as a track and make it visible on the map as a track (just a line) you will have it 100% correct as it was recorded from the guys who uploaded it. I think the Zumo xt2 does a much better job with this and the waypoints connected to it, then the zumo xt1
Thank you sir. And congrats on your new Zumo. Was it on sale? The price new, was quite ridiculous 🤌🏻
Sir. is ok, but I prefer Christian;...... LOL. @@tshansen

One of the best reviews and tutorials I’ve seen , had the xt for a few years and just upgraded to xt 2 and on a learning curve
Thank you Ian. Appreciate you telling me, and glad you found it helpful 👏🏻
17:36 Truly SPLENDID info and know how👍Thanx man🙏
Thank you so much mate, appreciate the nice comment 🔥
Cheers mate
@@tshansen Garmin changing their ways??? Hope your XT2 keeps working perfectly, Thomas.
@@enduromotorradtouren hahahaha, it is allowed to have hopes 😂👏🏻
There's no reason it shouldn't. It has the same hardware and operating system as the XT as far as we know... We've been testing for them for years...
Cheers
Thanks for this useful and honest review Thomas 👍
They added nice features to the XT 2 and I think the XT series are pretty good devices, very intuitive and easy to use.
Thank you sir, glad you found it useful 🙌🏻 So many days to spend enjoying the best bits of life. I have high hopes of retiring early myself. Cheers
Thanks for this upfront and honest review! I am just entering the world of Garmin and got myself an XT2, your information was just want I needed.

I understand you mate, and no! I have not had any issues with my unit. I was out riding for 4 hours the other day, just after the last update and no issues what so ever.
@@tshansen thank you. I'll give it a shot. Take care🤘
Hilarious!

Good job TS. Understand it more now. Willhave to get one someday soon. Strange lands with unknown roads to travel. Thanks
Than you Sir. I'm quite impressed with this unit (for my needs) I hope Garmin continue to perfect this path they are on now.
Ai ai, that is not good. I have not experienced anything like that on mine, but great to hear you get a new one on warranty 👏🏻
@@tshansen you mean, what is best: Pepsi or Cola? It's Pepsi of course 😁

Thank you for all the detailed and practical information, that motivated me to purchase.

Hello my friend 🤩👏🏻 yes, it is much easier and so much better to navigate with this unit compared to older versions! I really want to test out the 8 inch tread unit!
Yes you could argue if they are better or worse, but at half the price, people would accept that is not as good.
Useful and interesting. Well done!
Glad it was helpful! 👏🏻
I was near Gardermoen two weeks ago I wanted to go to the pier at for photo op and TT couldn’t locate City Hall (Rådhuset)
I knew there was tunnels and turn off I was pressed for time so I couldn’t afford to get lost.
I know the mapping is poor but this was beyond useless. I ended up using GoogleMaps
I will plan a solo next year and will be taking in the ARB festival too.
Waiting for your new adventure ✌️
Very nice video, really like it my friend, thanks a lot and take care.
Thank you so much, appreciate that 🙌🏻 Have a great day 👌🏻
Thanks for the review master Thomas!
Nice informative video. Thanks for sharing Bro. ❤
You are welcome mate. Glad you liked it 🙌🏻
Kjempegod gjennomgang.
Excellent video, very useful. I bought the Garmin last year for a trip to Europe. It’s a great piece of kit, and clearly has more functions than I know how to use. Keep up the excellent videos. Ride safe. 👍
Thank you Mate. Appreciate it 🙌🏻 Much more to come 😇

Great review, thanks!
You are welcome Daniel 🙌🏻
Cheers
Great informative video.
Thank you!
@@tshansen Thank you for your answer. My problem is that, I find out often afterwards 😉
This is why I use "Track of the day" perfect software from a german guy
Good video; will be between Zumo XT2 and a DMD T865 tab
Thank you, hope this did not make the choice harder for you 😂🙈 The only thing I miss on the zumo xt2 is the options to have roadbook reader
@@tshansen stemmer! Digital roadbook to replace my 23 years old Touratech and getting SatNav as a bonus 😂
But ... I've saved about approx. 200+ Waypoints in my TOMTOM;
so ... is there a good and practicable possibility to transfer these waypoints to GARMIN ZUMO XT2?
This woud be really crucial.
Thanks for this perfect video!
regards, Alexander
@@alexanderkolonja7006 well, I have had my share of bad luck with the newest updates on the zumo xt2.
You could export all waypoints in a gpx file to the garmin explorer web page! But there is no guarantee that it will sync with your device! I have jumped over to a android device from Thork Racing and never going back to garmin again
Excellent review.
Thank you, really glad you found it useful 🙌🏻
Sorry 🤣👏🏻 I can't help it. Trust me, it is not that complicated, it is just me doing a poor job explaining the easy stuff 😂👏🏻 Cheers
I too am on same bond with XT2. Annoyed as it sometimes feels like bit untested beta product but trusting and waiting for new firmwares to fix that. Wife inherited my XT and is happy with it.
The two latest updates from garmin has worked really well for me! No issues so far 🔥👏🏻
@@tshansen you’ve managed to live without ghost touches on screen during driving? Only yesterday happened several times.
@@motopilgrimfi this has not been a issue with none of my units! But it is still early to tell with the xt2
@@tshansen Thanks for sharing and repying to my question.
@@BeyondtheBends Np problem mate. Hope it was helpful
@@tshansen it is, thanks
Cheers
Thanks man👍
You are welcome 🙌🏻
Good video thank you. Can you use the EXPLORE app on a desktop PC to plan and make detailed routes - like you could in Basecamp?
Basecamp does not connect to my XT2, is this the same for you?
Yes, this is same for everyone! Zumo xt2 does not Connect! But you can make routes/tracks in basecamp, download them to your computer, send it to your phone and open it on thw unit.
Planing detail trips in explore i’m not sure of! That is for hiking, and i think it does not have nuvi map, like tread
I like your all videos 📷😍
Thank you 🙌🏻
Thank you. Got it!
Perfect 🙌🏻
Please tell me why you chose a Garmin XT2 when you could get a Tomtom 500 at half the price? I got the 500 with a used bike I bought. It's fantastic. I don't upload routes or way points anymore. It's much easier to do it on the unit itself.
try going offroad or on gravel roads with that TomTom, or download a track and make it visible on the map to follow ☺
Question: are there any hard buttons that you can map to a function? ie. on my 680 I mapped the power button to automatically create a waypoint while riding and following the map. The unit would generate a waypoint without changing the current map use. This is a valuable feature as I could waypoint a location for future exploration (eg. offshoot trail, treefall, potential reroute, etc.)
Edit: no hard button mapping on XT2/Tread unfortunately.
I don’t think there is a option for this 🤔 need to check it out! But one touch on the screen icon and you can add a waypoint that way! So i really can’t see the use for it
,,,👍
Thanks for the video
Have you had a chance to try the Garmin Montana? What do you think about it?
You are welcome sir. Well, I have tried most of the Montanas except the latest 700 series. I know that it has some quirks and are not that intuitive to use. What makes you consider the Montana series?
@@tshansen
I had struggled with the Montana 700i, it seems to me to be one of the most versatile devices
Sorry 👏🏻
@@tshansenThanks for reply. You are not missing much. All Garmins suffer from poor audio instructions. Not a spot on Waze or Google Maps.
Awesome 💯
Great review.
@@sbrooks5683 Hmm... this sounds strange and something we should contact Garmin about
I had an online chat session with a Garmin tech y’day.
Thank you!

I'm thinking of buying the XT2.
I'd like to use the OEM cradle of BMW GS1250... Do you know any adapter to fit it similar to the 3D AM?
🤝
...👍
This i don’t know anything about, sorry! I don’t have a bmw to test it with either.
Thank you TS.
Great video!

thanks for the interesting video.
But there will be more. much more 😇

Go for the xt1 👏🏻🔥 you can Get that for a really good price some places

Ok this is off topic but like the looks of your backpack. What brand is it?
Eric
Haha, thank you mate. It is the Kriega Trail 18. Great backpack and I use it every day!
Do you have problems in the rain with your screen changing do to rian drops on the XT? If so like I do, does the XT2 also have this problem?
No? I did not have this issue with either the xt or the xt2 🤔
is there any Bluetooth remote that can allow this to be controlled from the handlebars? even just for phone calls and music.
I have no idea... never thought about checking that. 🤔
I have the bmw navigator 6, which is basically a garmin unit.
the whole UI is so sluggish its a pain to use so I thought about getting the zumo xt 2 instead but I see it's still as laggy

I have no idea.... there is nothing like this here in Norway that I have heard of. I will try to send Garmin a message and ask them. Cheers
