Woke up with this beautiful tune running through my mind and, a few hours later, it still is playing in my mind and making my day so happy. Thank you John and the Jaybirds for this lovely, uplifting piece of music!!
This song has been going through my mind for WEEKS. First heard it on the Navajo Rug CD, then chased down the original, Master John R. That led to this. Thanks a MILLION!!!!
This is my favorite rendition of a wonderful Tune. All the Musicians are fantastic ! The Scenery is delightful It makes you want to leave home, and, go to Saltspring for good The Shrillbillie
I CAN’T get enough of this! I listen umptynine times a day, every day The Shrillbillie I’m an Advances beginner fiddler, and, am hoping to some day play, ( after much mite hard work), lots of Music , as good as this guy, and other very skilled fiddlers . The Shrillbillie
I was watching the way that Jim is holding his pick while flatpicking the guitar. I tried it. Immediately I got better tone. Thanks for the lesson Jim.
Outstanding! Just came across this one. Couldn't stop smiling, especially when I saw a grin creep across the face of the usually stoic Nick Hornbuckle. Video work was great on this as well, wonderful setting and great camera work.
If the world were on fire, I would run in to save the .mp3 of this melody. Pefection, true and utter perfection. The muscianship, the music, the enviroment and the editing. Go to between 3:05 and 3:06 for just one example of genius muscianship and editing combined. Those two notes from the fiddle right there are just exquisit! Love from Devon, UK
Love this song! Some sweet mando picking on that second solo. Cameraman and editing are driving me nuts. Sure is nice to see what that guitar player is picking when we are looking at his face. :P
It sure is easy on the ears and blends well with the band. Nick sells tab for three finger picking of old time fiddle tunes, for banjo, in various tunings (CD included). It's refreshing material that's being embraced by bluegrass jammers.
I also play 2 finger banjo. I've always had a pick on the 3rd finger and once n awhile it picks a string but slows me down trying to work that 3rd finger in the picking. Its nice to hear a 2 finger picker sound so good!
Why is the Gibson logo taped over on that RB-1? It's not covered on the mandolin. And you can tell the banjo's a Gibson because of the Mastertone block.
Does anyone play this AA B A? I am troubled by the tune ending on what might be termed the bridge and the last chord being the dominant. Or what the hey, it's the 21st century, time to toss all that tonality and form stuff out the window?
Two finger banjo is actually a precursor to the modern and more widely used three finger or Scruggs style of banjo. Obviously with a traditional folk instrument many of the older styles are still in active use if you know where to look.
It's not a capo (that's on the 2nd fret), it is black tape, and I've no idea why it's there! Maybe the inlay is falling out? It's a lovely well played in neck
It's pretty common for musicians to cover up the brand on the head stock. Bill Monroe scratched out his Gibson logo after a dispute, and I know several others blacked out their logos because they didn't want free advertising or had conflicts. Some players do it because they don't want to advertise for free when they deserve to be compensated...
I'm not so sure it's all that common, but the Monroe thing is true. However, from what I recall, it had to do with a falling out Monroe had about the way Gibson handled one of his set-ups. I may be wrong, but I think that after they painstakingly put back together his smashed mandolin he was so thankful that he had them repair the Gibson logo as well. Is it possible the banjo player is sponsored by a particular banjo brand but was using something else for this video and decided to tape over it in order to avoid the conflict-of-interest?
Banjo player making that sound with 2 fingers blows my mind
The banjo player is Nick Hornbuckle.
One of the most beautiful bluegrass songs ever written! Thanks John. Hope to see you at the Grass Valley music camp next year.
I have nothing witty or knowledgeable to add - just that this is pure magic.
Never, Never tire of the great sounds from the Jaybirds.....thank you John.....GREAT mandolin playing...
Woke up with this beautiful tune running through my mind and, a few hours later, it still is playing in my mind and making my day so happy. Thank you John and the Jaybirds for this lovely, uplifting piece of music!!
I could easily live inside this video. Heaven on earth.

Have always loved your music one of your biggest fans always in your corner David Anderson
So goooood ! I love this two-finger banjo picking ! 😍
This is the all time great recording.
Awesome tune - I will learn this myself. Also innovative 2 finger style of the banjo too which I have never come across.
This is my favorite rendition of a wonderful Tune. All the Musicians are fantastic !
The Scenery is delightful
It makes you want to leave home, and, go to Saltspring for good
The Shrillbillie
Great playing! And it's nice to see a two-finger banjo picker.
Thanks for sharing.

So beautiful. This video gives me chills just seeing the joy music brings to you all (but especially the bass player lol)
Wow this song is beautiful! I'm going to have my daughter learn it now!
I love this tune -- so beautiful. I am listening to it over and over. :)
Video and camera work is exemplary. Band is tight. Music so clean. Gotta love it.
Great musicians and it's wonderful to see someone wearing a vintage Hamilton watch… A Parker I believe.
Wonderful composition and performance. I miss your group!
One of my favorite tunes!
Most beautiful tune. Love the filming. Finesse. Class. ❤️It. Greetings from Norway.
Gosh, this is an education. And a beautifully shot vid. So actually it's two educations. Thank you so much Birdies.
Wow. This came on automatically after I listened to a Noam Pikelny song. totally blown away. Looking for more of these folks, this is awesome.
Great tune! can't stop listening to it! Nice job Jaybirds. This video should win some sort of award!
Glorious!
Really nice stuff. I'm very impressed.
This is incredible!
So beautiful and clear. One of my favourites!
Beautiful picking! Thumb and index finger banjo player…. An awesome different sound than thumb two finger picking!👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
What a delight! This is why I love to play bluegrass!
Magnificent.
LOVE that guitar player, Jim Nunnally ! The picking is so clean ...
He does seem to have the hang of it😁
I was watching the way that Jim is holding his pick while flatpicking the guitar.
Never heard this one before. Sure is a good one.
And the waves gently breaking on the shore at the end really top it off.
Omg totally fantastic
Beautiful
Beautiful tune - heard it for the first time today - loving that double bass in there.
Love this tune! Well played, excellent photography, too.....
Amazing great stuff!
so glad you guys put out this video. great song. one of my favorites
John, Thanks for teaching this at Swannanoa. Great tune. Hammer on, buddy. JR
John Ritchhart Howdy from Asheville. These guys were teaching here??
Does better with two fingers than I can with three by far! This is a definite keeper! From the Mo. Mule Rider

Its funny I go. Play and thay look at me crazy its a great song thank you
Great mix, particularly the guitar. They so often get lost in there. It's good to hear it out front.
I like how they come together in this one, a sound-meld, sort of. Sweet music.
Nice! Makes me want to move to Saltspring Island.
Great sound and a well made video. Looking forward to seeing them tonight in Lincoln City, Oregon!
Love this song! Some sweet mando picking on that second solo. Cameraman and editing are driving me nuts. Sure is nice to see what that guitar player is picking when we are looking at his face. :P
yes and it sounds good
I love the slides that Nick Hornbuckle starts playing at 3:15!
My first Jaybirds experience. Nice!
Very Pretty Mandolin
adding this to our list for spring festys 18' . great vid and playing!
this song I heard so much this summer. defiantly went on the list
Two finger banjo the likes of which I have never seen. Impressively musical.
Certainly the best way to learn this tune, from the source...
ben bernanke plays a great mandolin
Seth Wiggins haha
John's technique makes you want to hear more and more of this simple tune.
Great tune, beautifully played. So glad to have heard it.
FOR THE LOVE OF THE BANJO gODS, WHY IS THEIR FIRST CD WITH THIS SONG ON IT NO LONGER AVAILABLE!!!??!!!
I love these guys
Will see them in Edinburgh in May. :-)
Saw them last night. They were absolutely awesome. All without exception amazing musicians! Great harmony singers too. :-)
Nicely done, all around. 😁
This f***** RULES!!!
That was a nice break Jim.
Notice the banjo player is playing a two finger style.

Yeah. Noticed as well!
One finger, surely :O)
Why did he cover up the name on the headstock?
Bill Monroe used a two finger player after Scruggs at some point. I find it fascinating actually. Would you have noticed if not seen?
Good stuff
is there a mandolin tab for us who would love to do this with our friends? thank you john reischman for a great tune.
I'm guessing that's Salt Spring Island they are on? Great song, lovely island!
Very nice, beautiful, solid ... that banjo picker's getting a whole lot out of those two fingers!
Awesome Video I love that you have a 2 finger banjo player in your Band. I play in a 2 finger style
have never seen 2 finger banjo playing before. is it used in bluegrass
not really its mainly with old time music, but this seems to work with 2 finger banjo in bluegrass wonderful
I also play 2 finger banjo. I've always had a pick on the 3rd finger and once n awhile it picks a string but slows me down trying to work that 3rd finger in the picking. Its nice to hear a 2 finger picker sound so good!
Tasty 🎉❤😅
We all make weird faces when we play this kind of stuff
Why is the Gibson logo taped over on that RB-1? It's not covered on the mandolin. And you can tell the banjo's a Gibson because of the Mastertone block.
I was wondering the same thing. Maybe I'll ask the next time I see these guys.
Nashvolk5 Yeah there's gotta be a story there. Even if it's a small story lol.
I saw them last night at a concert. Got chatting with Nick about that afterwards, but I’d sooner let him tell you the tale of the black tape.....
To the one person that gave a thumbs down, can you explain why?
Such a great tune, enjoying working this out on clawhammer.
I llLLllLllOooOooOovvvVVVvVe this!!
what banjo playing- and with only thumb and first finger!
Does anyone play this AA B A? I am troubled by the tune ending on what might be termed the bridge and the last chord being the dominant. Or what the hey, it's the 21st century, time to toss all that tonality and form stuff out the window?
Saw someone play bluegrass banjo with one fingerpick, but it's usually played with more than one.
Zeke Smukler I know him and he lost the use of his middle finger so he compensates by playing 2 finger instead of three and he kicks butt.
Two finger banjo is actually a precursor to the modern and more widely used three finger or Scruggs style of banjo. Obviously with a traditional folk instrument many of the older styles are still in active use if you know where to look.
Does anyone know why the banjo player covered this headstock with tape?
Is there a place where I can buy a recording of this song?
Love this song, and the band. Does anyone know why the banjo player appears to have black tape over the Gibson logo on his banjo?
It's not black tape. It's a capo.
It's not a capo (that's on the 2nd fret), it is black tape, and I've no idea why it's there! Maybe the inlay is falling out? It's a lovely well played in neck

it's black tape and he removed the truss rod cover with Gibson on it too. Funny John's Mandolin says Gibson and it's not covered.
I didn't know George Lucas was in a band
+MARMOTEER1423 May the IVth be with you
what is that crazy interval the fiddler plays at 1:10?
Its a perfect 5th
specifically a C# on the bottom and G# on top!
D-18?
Who is the banjo player?
what kind of pickup on that guitar?
One viewer gave it a thumbs down...whaaaat?
I’ve never seen a banjo player only use 2 fingers on their right hand. Weird
One guy TD'd by mistake.
glorious!
