    Battle of Bennington fun fact: in 1777, Vermont wasn't part of the 13 colonies. When American independence was declared, Vermont declared itself an independent, sovereign republic.
    Eventually, in 1791, the Republic of Vermont joined the Union as the 14th state. 🍁

      As a decendant of green mountain boy moses dow and a born and rasied bennington vermont native. I agree that is true. Another fun fact is we outlawed slavery many years before the battle. Also, we almost succeeded the nation and rejoined the British through our sister city montreal . We still have an independent vermont Republic movement and still fly the green mountain boys flag in our military units

    Incredible how an engagement *won by militia* tipped the scales in what would become one of the most significant battles of the war at Saratoga!
