    I was devastated when I first heard about this and to be honest I never knew about the existence of the tree! Watching this wonderful film and seeing those people carrying away those branches, I felt such a loss, as if they were carrying away the body of someone I closely knew. I don't consider myself religeous, neither a believer or disbeliever, but for some reason I have been touched and moved by this event and by what I saw in the film.

    Simple, moving and very effective. In some strange way, the twisted person responsible for this desecration did us all a favour in waking us up again to the significance of this tree. For those who are not aware of its history, legend has it that Joseph of Arimathea came to Glastonbury and thrust his walking stick into the ground, where it sprouted and blossomed. This tree is not the same one, but originated from it. It is of a species found only in the middle East, which adds credence.

    • @daragildea7434
      @daragildea7434 4 года назад

      Whoever told you that doesn't know what he/she is talking about. There is no "species (of hawthorn) only found in the middle east". Hawthorns are only native to Europe, in point of botanical fact.

    • @yuiopoli9601
      @yuiopoli9601 2 года назад

      Can you prove your "only in the middle east" comment? That would be truly helpful!

    • @vixendoe6943
      @vixendoe6943 Год назад

      @@yuiopoli9601 no the legend cannot be authenticated. The original blackthorn was destroyed during the Reformation. Because the tree blooms twice a year it is thought to come from the type of blackthorn found around the Mediterranean and Levant. Unfortunately the only way to propagate the blackthorn is by grafting it into other trees like the hawthorn, the common type native to the area around Glastonbury and as far afield as Ireland. So the "holy thorn" has become more common hawthorn then the original blackthorn tree the legend of Joseph of Arimathea was born from.

    I remember this. I'm in Wiltshire, and htv news did a few days on this.
    I was a protestant until my mid teens. Am no longer religious.
    I felt devastated when this was done though.
    My gripe with all of this, is, you can take semi ripe cuttings and root cuttings (as was probably done in the past), yet you get new age folk tying crap to it instead of trying to take cuttings............
    Although I am atheist I believe anyone who has beliefs of any sort should be respected.
    I am a f/t gardener by trade and this tree could have lived on if folk didn't p!ss about whining and doing nothing.
    First thing I would have done was take some branches to take cuttings and some for grafting.
    Btw, even cut branches can live for weeks even after cutting, so there was no excuse.

      Phaedra, my wife and I have been visting Glastonbury for many , many, years, not an easy journey at our age , from Holland, weve always had a wonderful time even introducing our daughter to it, but on our last vist this summer, we felt a whole different vibe, instead of being energised we both felt tired and down, and there was an aggression, an angry feeling, we thought it was us, then others started to mention it, so????

      @ mentaltfladdrig. The story I was told came from the book Drama of the Lost Disciples. When Jesus had died the Sanhedrin are supposed to push a boat with no supplies out to sea with Mary, mother of Jesus and followers. They drifted to Marseilles France (each year in a small village they have a procession of a small boat representing the holy family/disciples through the streets.). From there this small group went to Cornwall. The Glastonbury Chapel was supposedly where these holy ones were Buried here and many came to be buried here, kings royalty. The Glastonbury thorn was supposedly planted at this place, from the crown of thorns from Jesus’ crucifix.. the thorn sprouted white roses.. in the winter. A stamp commemorates it 💁‍♀️✝️💕🌹
